Jon Rahm defending his title at Spanish Open after Saturday 63

October 5, 2019

Three Spaniards are atop the Spanish Open leaderboard, but the race for first really isn’t close. Jon Rahm, the no. 5 player in the world, has a five-shot lead with just 18 holes to play.

Rahm, who won his home country event last year, made eight (!) birdies and an eagle 2 on Saturday for a 63. The 24-year-old was six-under throughout the five-hole stretch of 12 thru 16, carding a 28 on his back nine to stretch away from the field.

His hole-out on the 16th was simply icing on the cake.

Rahm’s fellow countrymen Rafa Cabrera Bello and Samuel Del Val have each performed well back home, but at 12 under, they’ll need a magical Sunday, and some help from Rahm, to be victorious.

Rahm has won seven times worldwide in his young career to this point, three times on the PGA Tour and four times on the European Tour. He turns 25 years old on November 10.
