WATCH: Gary Woodland surprises Amy Bockerstette with U.S. Open trophy on ‘Today’ show

June 18, 2019

One of the most heart-warming stories in golf just keeps getting better.

Amy Bockerstette, who co-started with Gary Woodland in a viral video earlier this year and remains a huge fan, was on the “Today” show with her father on Tuesday morning when she received a special surprise.

Out walked Woodland with the U.S. Open trophy in tow. Woodland is in New York City right now for a post-U.S. Open media tour, and part of the blitz included a visit to the “Today” show. The moment was a tear-jerker.

Woodland and Bockerstette’s friendship goes back to earlier this year at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, where the two played the par-3 16th hole together during a practice round at TPC Scottsdale. It turned into a beautiful moment that went viral.

During the final round of the U.S. Open on Sunday, Bockerstette tweeted out her support for Woodland, then the 54-hole leader, to hold on and win at Pebble Beach.

With Amy in his corner, Woodland did just that as he won his first major title. When the final birdie putt dropped, Amy and her family celebrated Woodland’s career-defining moment.

After his press conference on Sunday, Woodland FaceTimed Bockerstette to include her in the moment.

This certainly isn’t the last of these two together. They make a great team.
