Golf-oriented celebrations have almost become commonplace on the football field. Whether it’s a Tiger fist-pump or a simulated short game shot, it’s clear that many football players have a stake in the game of golf as well. Unfortunately, that got Tony Romo a little too excited.
Romo was on the call for the Seattle Seahawks game against the Los Angeles Rams Sunday, alongside his broadcast partner Jim Nantz. Together, they make up perhaps the golfiest broadcast duo in the NFL. When Seahawks punter Michael Dickson tossed a punt inside the 5-yard line, and proceeded to coax the ball backward, Romo jumped to make the golf connection.

As if the punter’s hand motions weren’t enough, Romo saw a “PGA” patch on Dickson’s chest. It was too good to be true! In fact, yes, it was too good to be true, because PGA stood for Paul G. Allen, longtime owner of the Seahawks who passed away in October.
Romo seemed eager to make the connection between the “PGA” patch and the Professional Golf Association, but thankfully caught himself just quick enough to let Nantz jump in with the true, somber meaning of the patch.
Allen was 65 when he passed on October 15 and had owned the Seahawks in part since 1996. He made much of his fortune as a co-founder of Microsoft alongside Bill Gates. Allen was a big sports fan in the Pacific Northwest, also owning the Portland Trailblazers and the Seattle Sounders FC through his company.
