3 five-second fixes to cure your shanks, putting strike and driving accuracy

February 19, 2019

Need a couple quick fixes? Don’t worry, we got you covered. Here’s three of them to help you play better golf, right now…

TIP #1: Struggling to hit fairways?

Forget teeing it high and letting it fly. When you’re halfway through a round and can’t hit a fairway, tee your ball down a little lower and put more weight on your front foot, says GOLF Top 100 Teacher Tony Ruggiero. It will increase the amount of backspin on your drives. More backspin equals less sidespin—and more fairways.

TIP #2: Find the putter’s sweetspot

Tiger Woods’s favorite putting drill is simple enough to do yourself — it can move off-center contact back to the sweet spot in seconds flat. Peg a couple of tees just outside the heel and toe, as shown. These form a gate that forces you to make a straighter stroke through the ball. It’s genius: Miss the tees and you’ll hit the sweet spot.

TIP #3: A bandaid for your shanks

Shanks are often the result of a golfer “casting” the club on the downswing, says GOLF Top 100 Teacher Mark Blackburn. If that’s you, the next time the shanks come, set up with more of a closed stance and swing toward where your toeline is pointing, to the right of your target. Works every time.
