Like the new metalwoods with the same name, the new M5 ($999 steel, $1,199 graphite) and M6 ($899 steel, $999 graphite) irons from TaylorMade represent not just an incremental improvement over the previous M3 and M4 but a major jump forward in design and performance. The M5 irons are aimed at mid-handicappers and some better players that prefer a more traditional profile while the M6 is made for mid- and high-handicappers that want maximum forgiveness and distance.

TaylorMade M5 irons
Designed to provide a combination of ample workability and outstanding forgiveness and distance, the new M5 irons present a more compact, traditional profile with less offset than the somewhat larger M6. The biggest advances that make the M5 superior to the prior M3 is a thru-slot Speed Pocket in the sole of the club that’s the most flexible ever made by TaylorMade and a new Speed Bridge design that connects the topline of the clubhead to the back bar. This arrangement stiffens the upper area of the clubhead, not only reducing vibration for improved sound and feel but also deflecting impact vibration to the lower area of the clubface, where most players strike the ball.
At impact the larger thru-slot Speed Pocket is activated to an even greater degree, creating more flex, ball speed and distance. The Speed Bridge and Speed Pocket combine with an extremely thin clubface and patented Inverted Cone Technology in the 4-7 irons to make them not only longer but also more forgiving across a larger area of the face.
Other features of the new M5 irons include a HYBRAR compression damping system with multi-material badges for a softer overall feel, 360 undercuts with stiffening topline ribs for more face flex, and a new fluted hosel for a lower and deeper CG and better launch. The new M5 is available in 4-SW with a choice of True Temper’s XP100 steel shafts or Mitsubishi’s Tensei Orange graphite shafts.
TaylorMade M6 irons
Aimed at mid and high-handicappers, the M6 irons are TaylorMade’s most high-performance game improvement irons yet. Built with the same technologies as the M5, but with a larger clubhead and more offset, the M6 irons feature the aforementioned thru-slot Speed Pocket in the 4-7 irons for enhanced ball speed, distance and forgiveness on shots struck low on the face. The Speed Bridge, extremely thin clubface, Inverted Cone Technology, HYBRAR vibration damping and all the other goodies featured in the M5 are also in the M6, which also comes with new set wedges designed to be more friendly to mid and high-handicappers around the greens.
The new M6 irons come in 4-AW with a choice of KBS Max 85 steel shafts or Fujikura’s ATMOS Orange graphite shafts.
Both the M5 and M6 irons will be available for preorder on Jan. 18 and at retail on Feb. 1.
