Master craftsman Scotty Cameron is constantly thinking of ways to innovate. But that doesn’t mean he’s against embracing the past. The latest B3 Triple Black Design limited putters deftly toe the line between the past and present by combining classic head shapes with modern twists.
Golfers familiar with Cameron’s creations will immediately notice several head shapes returning to the arena: Santa Fe, Catalina and Newport 2 Long Neck. If you grew up around the game in the late 1990s and early 2000s, these names elicit a serious whiff of nostalgia.
While the names are familiar, Cameron and Austie Rollinson, senior director of putter R&D, integrated subtle shaping from the existing Super Select profiles and formats to bring them into the present.
“With the B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters, we’re giving players new designs based on our established Super Select profiles and formats,” Rollinson said. “The Newport 2 is always the most popular model, and with the Santa Fe, Newport 2 Long Neck and Catalina models, we’re presenting playable options not available in the current line. Golfers have an opportunity to game a longstanding design concept, refined and made with our modern milling and manufacturing processes.”
For example, the Newport 2 is “modeled after the crisp, mechanical shape of the Super Select Newport 2,” while the Long Neck features an I-beam style neck currently found on several Super Select putters. Even the Catalina received a makeover in the form of a slightly wider shape that more closely resembles the Super Select Newport Plus.
Staying true to the Triple Black name, each 303 stainless steel head receives a dark PVD treatment that’s designed to reduce glare. The topline is manually misted and the face and sole are hand buffed before application. The chrome shaft also comes in the same Tour Black finish to round out the all-black build.
Each face undergoes a dual-milling process, inspired by Tour, that combines the softness of deep-milled putters with the consistency and feedback found in mid-milled offerings.
“Our Triple Black putters have always been a popular option on Tour with players who not only like a stealthy, cool-looking design, but also want an extra solution for reducing sun glare,” Cameron said. “We created the B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters to give dedicated golfers that tour-quality experience in four classic configurations.”
The loft on each model is 3.5 degrees with a lie angle of 70 degrees. Adjustable heel-toe weights can be found in the sole as well. The Catalina utilizes stainless steel weights made in 10-gram, 15-gram and 20-gram increments, while the other models employ heavier tungsten in 30-gram, 35-gram and 40-gram denominations matched the putter lengths (33-inches, 34-inches and 35-inches).
Available July 26, Scotty Cameron’s B3 Triple Black retails for $750 and comes standard with a black Pistolini Plus grip and custom-designed B3 headcover.
B3 Triple Black Designs
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Newport 2: The flagship model of the B3 Triple Black LTD line, the Newport 2 is modeled after the crisp, mechanical shape of the Super Select Newport 2. The B3 Triple Black LTD Newport 2 is offered in both right-hand and left-hand models.
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Newport 2 Long Neck: An I-beam style long neck is added to the familiar Super Select Newport 2 head shape, promoting a more straight-back-straight-through putting stroke through a near-face balanced setup.
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Santa Fe: Inspired by the popular model from Scotty’s early career, the Santa Fe features an I-beam style flare 1.5 neck and a shape based on the softer, rounded features of the Super Select Newport. The configuration of a flare 1.5 neck and a Newport-style head is currently only available on Tour.
B3 Triple Black Design LTD Catalina: The Catalina, inspired by the Classic X, features a shape slightly wider than a standard Newport and more closely related to the Super Select Newport Plus. Instead of matching the Classic X’s double bend shaft, the updated setup features a shaft-over-spud design and a modern single bend shaft, giving the player near-face balanced performance.
