Though he has two wins on the season, Rory McIlroy has been stuck just outside where he wants to be for much of the year. In his ongoing quest for a fifth major title, McIlroy finished T7 at the PGA, 2nd at the U.S. Open and T6 at the Open Championship.
And despite holding the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking briefly early in the season, he’s spent most of the year in his current position: No. 2. That happens to be the same position he held to start the FedEx Cup Playoffs, a position he maintains after another near-miss at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he finished T3, one shot out of the playoff between Lucas Glover and Patrick Cantlay.
But if McIlroy were to pull off a victory at this week’s BMW, he’d finally be in pole position heading into the finale at the Tour Championship.
