A grip is more than just a grip
When it comes to golf equipment, the grip is quite possibly the single most overlooked part of a golf club — but it shouldn’t be.
The grip is the only connection you have between you and your clubs, and having the right one can make a massive difference to performance, whether it be based on size, texture, or alignment. Although performance is key and studies have proven that having the right grip can add extra distance through your bag, we can’t forget comfort either.
With the right grip, you can confidently grip the golf club the same way every time you step over a shot, and if you happen to be using a grip with any sort of reminder ridge, like the Golf Pride Align, you can ensure that you are placing your hands in the same spot.
You have to be safe
Even though it is a relatively simple process, any type of work that involves solvents and sharp knives requires safety, and when it comes to re-gripping golf clubs the most important thing you can do is make sure to cut away from yourself. Also, just like when cutting veggies, a sharp knife not only makes the job easier but it prevents you from having to use extra force to cut all the way through which could lead to breaking a blade and causing injury.
Last but certainly not least, it is always best practice to cut away from yourself. Placing a golf club in a clamp and cutting towards yourself can lead to serious injury and the best way to prevent that is to hold the club against your body and use a hook knife to cut under the grip. This method ensures that even if you happen to have a blade break, the knife will travel away from you rather than slip toward your body or your arm.
So with a few tools and a little practice, you can quickly, easily, and safely re-grip your own clubs to get maximum performance on the course.
