WATCH: Max Homa shanks wedge into TV tower at Bay Hill

March 9, 2020

Hey, @maxhoma23, evaluate Max Homa.

During Sunday’s final round at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Max Homa tried to hit a flop shot with his fourth on the par-5 6th hole at Bay Hill — and instead it just flopped. The ball zipped past a greenside camera before hitting a camera tower and landing in the rocks that sit in front of the water behind the green. Homa was able to play a shot, knocked it within 18 inches after hitting the pin and escaped with a bogey.

“I had a horrendous lie. Didn’t even know if I pitched it left if I could keep it in a decent spot,” Homa told GolfChannel.com. “I figured if it came out bad, it would go in the bunker. Never really thought it was going to grab my club and make me shank it. Hadn’t done that in a while.”

The sequence might have given a few social media golfers a bit of schadenfreude.

“Hey, @maxhoma23,” hundreds of golfers have tweeted over the last year, “please evaluate my swing,” attaching video. And does he evaluate. “U have a wife and 5 kids so it makes sense that ur too busy to fix ur backswing, downswing, or follow through,” Homa recently tweeted at NFL quarterback Matt Schaub, for example.

Now, Homa was getting what was coming to him. Homa, it appears, can give it. He’ll take it. And he’ll give it right back.

“If they want to give me heat, they can come play this golf course and they won’t break 130,” Homa told GolfChannel.com. “The last two days, I played awesome to shoot whatever it was, 2-over. So I challenge anybody to give me heat on just about anything with this golf course.”

Homa, who shot a final-round 76 to tie for 24th, later called up Twitter on his phone and dialed it back. Sort of.

“Holy cow guys it was a joke. I know u can break 130,” he tweeted.
