6 things I noticed while inspecting Matthew Wolff’s equipment

February 20, 2020

Matthew Wolff is one of the most exciting young players in the game, and we recently had a chance to go through his entire equipment setup. Upon turning professional last year, Wolff signed an equipment deal with TaylorMade; there wasn’t much of a transition, however, since he was using the company’s equipment throughout his junior and amateur playing days.

While photographing Wolff’s golf clubs ahead of the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open, I noticed six interesting things about his setup. Here’s what I found:

1. He doesn’t have the standard settings on his driver

Andrew Tursky

Long-hitting Wolff has the adjustable weight in his new TaylorMade SIM driver in a slightly draw-biased position. Additionally, he has the loft setting in the 9-degree driver in a slightly lower-lofted setting. The combination of a draw-bias weight positioning and more open face should work to neutralize his ball flight overall.

His SIM head is equipped with a Graphite Design AD-TP 7TX shaft, which is a shaft that he used in previous TaylorMade drivers before even turning professional.

2. An all-new shaft in his three-wood

With his switch into a TaylorMade SIM 15-degree fairway wood, Wolff also changed into a brand new Graphite Design Tour AD-XC 8TX shaft. The Tour AD-XC (“XC” stands for Xtra Carry) profile is new for 2020, and it’s designed for a low-mid launch angle and low spin. The multi-material carbon fiber shaft has a soft butt section with a stiff center and stiff tip.

To protect his new fairway wood setup and represent for his former university, Wolff has an Oklahoma State Cowboys headcover.

3. A mixed set of TaylorMade irons

Wolff plays a set of TaylorMade P-750 Tour Proto irons (4-PW), which have thin toplines, less offset, narrow soles and sharp leading edges. He was early on the P-750 train — using the irons before turning pro — and he hasn’t gotten off since. His current setup is equipped with Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 130X shafts.

At the top end of his iron set, Wolff also carries TaylorMade P-790 UDI 2- and 3-irons, each of which are equipped with Project X HZRDUS 105-gram 6.5-Flex shafts.

4. Custom TaylorMade wedges

Wolff has made the switch into TaylorMade’s new MG2 wedges (52, 56 and 60 degrees), but they have a slightly different look than retail versions. His 56-degree wedge is actually bent to 55 degrees, and it’s stamped with his initials in Oklahoma State orange. His 60-degree wedge has a unique grind that has a fair amount of heel relief to help with open-faced shots.

His wedges are equipped with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Onyx X100 shafts.

5. Old and new putters

Before the Waste Management Phoenix Open began, Wolff was carrying two different putters: an older TaylorMade Spider X, stamped with “Wolffie” on the sole, and a new TaylorMade Truss TM1 putter. During the event, Wolff actually used both putters; while he put the Truss in play during the first round, he was spotted using the Spider X in the second round. We’ll keep an eye on which putter becomes the trusted gamer as the season progresses.

6. He has the coolest putter cover on Tour

This TaylorMade “Wolffie” putter cover was, obviously, made custom for Wolff with its wolf-stitched logo in Oklahoma State colors and paw prints on the top side. The cover was designed by Cameron Bosson and the design team at TaylorMade; they did a great job, and it’s certainly among the coolest custom covers on the PGA Tour.
