Jason Day withdraws from Presidents Cup, Ernie Els picks Byeong Hun An as replacement

November 29, 2019

Jason Day won’t be competing in front of a home crowd after all. The 32-year-old Australian withdrew from the Presidents Cup with a back injury and International team captain Ernie Els has selected Korean Byeong Hun An as Day’s replacement. Day was one of Els’ four captain’s picks earlier this month.

In a release, Day said he’d been practicing in Palm Springs when he hurt his back, which has caused him problems before. He and his medical team decided it was best to withdraw from next week’s Australian Open and the following week’s Presidents Cup. Day was one of four Australians on the team that would be playing in front of home fans.

“I’m quite disappointed I won’t be coming home to play in either the Australian Open in Sydney or the Presidents Cup the following week in Melbourne,” Day said. “I was quite looking forward to both events.”

This is An’s first Presidents Cup appearance. The 28-year-old has had a strong start to the 2019-20 season, with three top 10s in seven starts. He’s finished no worse than T14 in his last three events.

The Presidents Cup is Dec. 13-15 at Royal Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia. Tiger Woods captains the U.S. team.
