LISTEN: How to determine if you should be playing a hybrid or driving iron
With the Open Championship in full swing, GOLF’s Fully Equipped podcast hosts Jonathan Wall and Tim Briand dig into the notable equipment changes being made at the Open Championship, including Tiger Woods’ recent putter testing and Jordan Spieth’s new Titleist’s T100 irons.
Given the multitude of driving irons being used at Royal Portrush, we discuss if the average golfer is better off using a driving iron or a hybrid. We break down the benefits of both clubs and the selection criteria players should be looking at when it comes to testing and potentially putting one in the bag.
“If I don’t have a traditional 2- or 3-iron in the bag, what should I have in there?” said Briand. “In the fitting environment, we see there are a lot of players that are misinformed and uneducated when making this decision.”
The episode concludes with the second part of an interview with PGA Tour winner Charles Howell III, who tells the story of the one-off Ping driver he played in college that was ahead of its time.
