Here’s what you missed from Round 1 of the Charles Schwab Challenge

May 24, 2019

The final leg of the PGA Tour’s Texas swing is now — pardon the pun— in swing. Loads of big names have descended upon historic Colonial Country Club for the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Here’s everything you missed from Thursday’s action in Fort Worth.

Tony Finau lit it up

Tony Finau posted the low round of the day in Dallas, with a seven-birdie-one-bogey round of 64, which was six under par on the par-70 Colonial Country Club.

Though he only has one Tour win on his resume, Finau has 28 career top 10s, including two this season: a T5 at the Masters and a runner-up finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions.

Tony Finau is chasing his second career victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Jordan Spieth's good form continued

Hot off his best finish of the season (a T3 at the PGA Championship), Jordan Spieth is back in the mix again, carding eight birdies, a bogey and a double en-route to a first round of five-under-par 65.

It’s a hometown event for the 25-year-old, who was born and raised in Dallas. Spieth is seeking his 12th Tour victory, and first win since the 2017 Open Championship. While there’s still plenty of golf to play, one thing’s for sure: If Spieth continues his stellar putting run, he could be adding another victory soon.

Rickie Fowler struggled

It was a tough day for fan-favorite Rickie Fowler, who carded four bogeys but failed to make a single birdie in the first round on Thursday. He’s currently T95 at four over par.

Fowler has five top-10 finishes this season, but will need to rally mightily on Friday in order to make the cut.

How'd the other headliners play?

The first round was difficult for several of the tournament’s big names. Francesco Molinari shot one-over 71, Bryson DeChambeau shot two-over 72, Justin Rose shot four-over 74, Jon Rahm shot five-over 75, and Xander Schauffele shot a six-under 76.

For reference, the highest round of the day was 78, and 37 players shot rounds under par.
