Tiger Woods misses cut at PGA Championship after disappointing second round

Tiger Woods had high hopes for this week at the 2019 PGA Championship, but his quest for major No. 16 will have to wait. Woods, who has been battling a cold this week, shot a three-over 73 in Friday’s second round to miss the cut at Bethpage Black.

After opening the tournament with a two-over 72, Woods needed to make something happen on Friday to get into contention, but he never kicked his game into gear. He got off to a rough start on the relatively easy opening stretch on the Black’s front nine. He saved par with a clutch putt at the 1st, but made an ugly bogey at 2 to drop to three over for the tournament.

After trading a birdie and bogey at 6 and 7, Woods looked like he was about to gain momentum when a long birdie dropped at 9 to move him back to two under.

But three-straight bogeys followed at the brutal stretch of 10-12, dropping Woods to five over and threatening his chances to make the cut. He added a birdie at 13, but immediately gave that shot back at the par-3 14th hole.

At that point, the cut had moved to four over, so Woods just needed one birdie coming in to survive and play the weekend at Bethpage Black. But he was unable to do so, finishing with four pars to end up at five over for the tournament.

It was Woods first missed cut in a major since last year’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. As he did that week, Woods will be flying home early as his yacht makes its way back to Florida.
