PGA Championship 2019: What you need to know for Friday at Bethpage Black

May 17, 2019

The PGA Championship is officially underway at Long Island’s Bethpage Black. Brooks Koepka lit it up with a course-record setting 63 on Thursday, but New Zealand’s Danny Lee is only one shot behind him. A host of pros are also within shouting distance: Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth — the list goes on! Tiger Woods is nine shots back. Can he rally after an opening 72? Here’s what you need to know for Friday’s second round.

1. The best PGA Championship groupings

Yeah, they’re the same groups as Thursday, but here are the five most intriguing, along with their Friday tee times (ET).

1. Brooks Koepka, Francesco Molinari, Tiger Woods (1:49 p.m., Tee No. 1)
2. Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Jason Day (8:13 a.m., Tee No. 10)
3. Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, Justin Rose (1:27 p.m., Tee No. 1)
4. Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth (7:51 a.m., Tee No. 10)
5. Sergio Garcia, Kelly Kraft, Adam Scott (1:05 p.m., Tee No. 1)

Jordan Spieth needs to win a PGA Championship to complete the career grand slam. He's six shots behind Kopeka after Round 1.

2. Cut line watch

After the second round, golfers with the low 70 scores, plus ties, advance to play the final two rounds. In the last three years, the cut has been made at one or two over par at the PGA Championship. But first-round scoring at Bethpage indicates that this year that number will be higher. There are are currently only 16 players under par, and 73 players at two over or better.

3. How to watch the PGA Championship Friday

Streaming options will be available on PGA.com beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET, where you can watch featured groups from both the morning and afternoon waves. Featured hole coverage begins at 1 p.m. ET. The TV broadcast is on TNT from 1-7:00 p.m. ET.

4. PGA Championship weather

Temperatures will be in the low 50s when the first group tees off at 6:45 a.m. ET, and it is expected to be a cloudy day, with a 30 percent chance of showers between 3 and 5 p.m. The temperature will reach a high of 69 degrees while winds will register around 10 mph.

5. Tiger Woods PGA Championship Watch

Tiger Woods had an up-and-down day on Thursday, with three birdies, an eagle, three bogeys and two doubles. He’s nine shots from the lead after finishing with a two-over-par 72, and while he’s not out of the championship, he has some work to do to get himself back in the mix.

6. The PGA Championship Round 2 best storyline will be…

Koepka made a serious statement on Thursday. Can he keep the momentum going? Will he stretch his lead or come back to the field? Can Tiger claw himself back into contention? And can any of the 20 club pros in the field survive the cut? There are way too many interesting players and storylines to choose just one. That makes Friday worth tuning in for.
