One of the most challenging holes at Augusta National just got much harder.
The media guide for the Masters was released on Tuesday, and the par-4 5th is listed at 495 yards, 40 yards longer than it was the year before. This lengthening was rumored to be in the works after last year’s tournament.
The 5th is now tied with the 10th hole as the second-longest par-4 on the course (and just 15 yards shorter than the par-5 13th, which has long been brought up in hole-lengthening discussions). The 505-yard par-4 11th remains the Masters’ longest par-4.
Augusta’s 5th is the fifth-hardest hole in Masters history (based on stats from 1942 to 2018) with a scoring average of 4.26. Last year it was the tournament’s sixth-hardest hole with a scoring average of 4.16. Twenty-six birdies were made compared to 64 bogeys and four double bogeys.
The 5th is a dogleg left with bunkers guarding the left side of the fairway from the tee. The green slopes back to front. According to the Masters media guide, the carry over the fairway bunkers is 313 yards.
The Masters is April 11-14 in Augusta, Ga.
