Each month, we tap experts from the equipment industry to answer your most commonly asked questions. In this installment, Josh Talge, VP of Marketing at Titleist, explains how to choose irons based not only on your current game but on the improved golfer you want to be.
Q. Should I choose an iron based on what I want to play when I get better, or just go with the model that works best now?
When we fit players, we focus on performance first. That said, we also ask questions to find out if the player likes the club regardless of the ball-flight numbers.
Most are very honest about their preferences, and the majority are perfectly happy sticking with irons that deliver the best results. Others are willing to sacrifice some performance in order to carry clubs that represent their overall taste.
My advice is to get fitted so that you have the opportunity to determine objectively how well a club really performs for you, whether it’s a game-improvement iron like our 718 AP1, a player’s distance iron like the AP3, or a Tour model such as the AP2. Only then can you begin the process of balancing the look with performance.
Make no mistake: Going with a model that works better tends to make the game more fun than choosing one that you hope will work if and when you get better.
