The PGA Tour is south of the border this week for the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Last year, Patton Kizzire edged Rickie Fowler by a single stroke to claim his first career Tour win. Both players are back in the field for another go this week.
Here’s what you missed from Round 1 at El Camaleon Golf Club.
Matt Kuchar shares the lead
It’s been over four years since Kuchar’s last win at the 2014 RBC Heritage, but you wouldn’t know it by the way the 40-year-old veteran played on Thursday.
A blemish-free scorecard — highlighted by seven birdies — propelled Kuchar to the top of the leaderboard. Adding even more intrigue was the fact that he did it without regular looper John Wood by his side.
Kuchar shares a one-shot lead with Kramer Hickok and Dominic Bozzelli.
Sybi Kuchar saved the day
Matt Kuchar’s wife, Sybi, pulled double-duty on Thursday. Not only was she on hand to support her husband, Matt, she also saved the day for Zach Johnson when his regular caddie, Damon Green, had to call it quits after nine holes.
Johnson fired an even-par round of 71 and is currently T91.
Zach Johnson needed an emergency caddie on the back nine and turned to… Matt Kuchar’s wife, Sybi.

Defending champ Patton Kizzire went four under par in two holes
Yep, you read that right. Kizzire had back-to-back eagles on Nos. 4 and 5 — and those holes were sandwiched by birdies! So yeah, make that six under par in four holes. No big deal!
“Oh boy … Oh boy.”
EAGLE for @PKizzire.

Kizzire fired a solid-round 65 today, six under total, which was good enough for T4.
