For anyone wondering whether persimmon equipment would make a huge difference for a long bomber like World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, the verdict is in: He still crushes it.
While practicing at the exclusive Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla., DJ was asked by Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player to hit a couple of Nicklaus’s old persimmon clubs: the driver and 1-iron.
The result? DJ still pounded them, hitting the driver 290 yards and the 1-iron 232 yards — a big drop from DJ’s current driving distance average of 314 yards (ranked 6th on Tour), but impressive nonetheless.
You can watch DJ’s sweet persimmon swings in the video below.
Cool experience today at Bears Club. @jacknicklaus and @garyplayer wanted to see @DJohnsonPGA hit Jack’s old 1 iron and Persimmon driver. pic.twitter.com/eX0joF4AgQ

Nicklaus was impressed with the numbers, too.
Those were pretty good hits @DJohnsonPGA for seeing the persimmon driver and 1-iron for the first time. I don’t imagine the 1-iron was that much different for you, because it’s like a driving iron. But 290 with a wood driver is pretty impressive….. for a “modern-day” player. ? https://t.co/2dVl9eKYQx
