WATCH: U.S. Open champ Gary Woodland tears it up on the basketball court in college

June 19, 2019

The golf world is getting to know a little more about Gary Woodland this week. Stories of Woodland’s athletic ability, especially on the basketball court, have been flying around the internet since his U.S. Open win. Now, we have video proof of Woodland’s basketball skills.

Woodland began his collegiate sports career at Washburn University, where he played basketball on a scholarship. According to Woodland, it was a game against DI University of Kansas, and specifically playing against future NBA pro Kirk Hinrich, that caused him to give up basketball.

But if you check out the video below, you can see that Woodland has more game than he gives himself credit for.

Clearly, Woodland had some serious talent on the court. But thankfully for golf fans, once Hinrich inspired Woodland to hang up his basketball shoes, he decided to focus his energy on golf. He transferred to Kansas on a golf scholarship, and the rest is history.
