Clark’s endorsement deal with Titleist ended at the end of 2025, and all season he has embraced his newfound equipment freedom. No changes have been more prevalent than the ones made to his driver and putter.

The 2023 U.S. Open champion began the season by using four different drivers in his first five events, but eventually settled on the TaylorMade Qi4D. He actually made a change to the driver this week, tweaking the lie angle and switching to a new, unreleased Project X Titan Yellow shaft.

Clark initially settled on the Qi4D, then with the Titan Black shaft, thanks to increased spin consistency, specifically not over-spinning and causing a right miss. However, Clark wanted to dial in his driver to favor a touch more accuracy this week, even if it meant sacrificing a bit of distance.

TaylorMade found an answer with the new Titan Yellow and slightly more upright setting.

“It was probably spinning 100-200 RPM more than he would want but with the consistency of the Qi4D head at that lie angle creates more accuracy which is what he was looking for,” TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld said. “I was happy with him playing that because he’s long enough at his ball speed and if he can get more fairways he doesn’t need the distance.”

He gained more than four strokes off the tee at TPC Craig Ranch, good for 6th in the field. It’s the first non-contract win for the Qi4D driver.

Clark also plays a Qi4D Tour 3-wood, which he added to his bag at the Masters, that is built to match the original spec of his driver.

Once he settled on the top end of the bag, Clark cycled through a few different putters before landing on Ping’s Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset. Clark switched to the Ally Blue at the Houston Open after showing up at the Players Championship with a putter he bought in the pro shop of his home club.

But he loved the five degrees of toe hang on the Ally Blue Onset, which helped counteract his left miss with low torque putters. He switched to a counterbalanced version at the RBC Heritage and was positive in Stokes Gained: Putting in his first two events with it.

He led the field this week by picking up more than 12.5 strokes on the greens.

Designed and engineered in our R&D Lab in San Diego, CA, Titan Black is built to meet the demands of today’s faster, more aggressive swingers. A more elastic handle section progressively firms through the mid and tip, delivering a smooth feel with added stability where it matters most. Synex Technology utilizes multi-axial carbon fibers to reinforce the shaft’s outer structure, increasing hoop stiffness from the handle through the mid-section for efficient energy transfer and enhanced control. By blending feel and stability, Titan Black gives players the confidence to swing faster without sacrificing dispersion or consistency.

Advanced Multi-Material Construction combines the most effective engineering techniques with the finest materials to create one of our longest moveable weight fairways.
The Titanium Qi4D Tour fairway is designed for golfers who seek the ultimate weapon to conquer long par 5s and to thread the needle of the narrowest of tee shots.

ADJUSTABLE PERFORMANCE

Utilizing three Trajectory Adjustment System weights (15g x 1 / 4g x 2) provides the golfer the most mass efficient way to adjust shot shape and spin.
4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimized flight.

CG OPTIMIZATION

Engineers were able to improve launch without adding spin due to the use of an ultralightweight titanium body and advanced CAD model simulations. This result is a fairway that is easy to launch with incredible distance from any lie.
A large 60g tungsten mass pad moves the center of gravity extremely low and forward, creating a hot trajectory for more distance.

At least for one round, Brooks Koepka finally took advantage of his PGA Tour-leading ball striking, firing an opening 63 at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.

Koepka was once again dialed in on approach, where he leads the Tour in Strokes Gained for the season, but he seems to have found something with a new flatstick, too. Koepka’s +2.56 Strokes Gained: Putting in Round 1 was not only 10th in the field, but also the five-time major champion’s second-best day on the greens this season.

The new putter in question — a Scotty Cameron Fastback 1.5 mid-mallet — is Koepka’s fourth different putter this season after spending most of his career using Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Teryllium blade models. Koepka used the Fastback 1.5 model at last year’s Irish Open when his putting started to slip.

Koepka started the year with his Newport 2 before making a change at the WM Phoenix Open, his second event after rejoining the PGA Tour from LIV Golf. He used a TaylorMade Spider Tour X L-neck putter until last week’s PGA Championship, when he tried a prototype Spider Tour V.

That lasted just one week, as Koepka was 63rd in putting at Aronimink. He showed up in Texas this week saying he wanted a putter with a bit more natural release.

“It’s something that just feels good in my hands,” Koepka said of the Fastback on Wednesday, before the tournament. “I feel like I’ve struggled with the toe release a little bit, kind of fighting that, kind of holding it off, and this putter seems to have a little bit more toe hang, to get kind of scientific with it or more in depth on it.

“It’s got a bit more toe hang than what I have been using all year, kind of similar to the blade. I know the CG’s up closer to the front of the face, which is kind of what I’m looking for.”

A more forward CG makes a mallet putter feel more like a blade through the stroke. That presumably was the same concept behind Koepka’s Spider Tour V he used last week. While we don’t know the technical details for certain, the previous generation Spider Tour V had the most forward CG in the TaylorMade lineup.

STUDIO CARBON STEEL (SCS) FACE INSERT
Designed to deliver the unmistakably soft sound and feel of carbon, the new precision milled Studio Carbon Steel (SCS) insert is treated with an electroless nickel plating for enhanced durability in a re-engineered concept that includes the line’s new chain-link face milling technology and aerospace-inspired vibration damping for tuned sound, feel and performance.
CHAIN-LINK FACE MILLING TECHNOLOGY
New chain-link face milling technology reduces the putter face insert’s touch points at impact with the ball using a texture that softens the sound and provides improved roll characteristics while preserving feel and feedback off the putter face.

FULL CONTACT SLIM GRIP

With a comfortable chain-link texture to match the new putter face milling pattern, the custom crafted Full Contact Slim paddle-style grip was designed to complement the stroke and performance of blade and mid-mallet putters. Its uniquely contoured profile and flat top provide superior comfort and contact between the hands and the putter, and enhanced body alignment.
MULTI-MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION
The Studio Style Fastback 1.5 extends Scotty Cameron’s proven design methodology of incorporating complementary materials to achieve desired performance characteristics. The Fastback 1.5 has a precision milled 6061 aircraft grade aluminum sole plate expertly designed into the 303 stainless steel putter head, as well as an aluminum heel-toe inlay anodized black, which allows for designed weight distribution, balance and feel.

“Something I feel like released on its own, something I’ve been trying to — been fighting a little bit, and I feel like it definitely releases a little bit,” Koepka said of the putter.

Koepka said he had been doing a lot of putting work in a home “little warehouse” with a putting studio, trying to hone his fundamentals like grip and alignment.

Interestingly, he also mentioned on Wednesday that being back on the PGA Tour this season has given him some new thoughts to explore with his bag, especially now that he is a gear-free agent after splitting from Cleveland/Srixon three weeks ago. Koepka said he had never explored use of a mini driver until seeing their usage on the PGA Tour.

“Maybe during the off-season, start doing a little bit of testing just because all of these options now are out there,” Koepka said. “Like the mini driver, I haven’t even — I don’t want to say, but it’s kind of like — it feels like a PGA Tour club because I never saw it until maybe the end of last year. I watched guys hit it. It’s only out here. I haven’t seen many other guys use it.

“Yeah, looking at that, it’s funny, I was talking to Shane Lowry at Zurich about it, and Augusta kind of suits it to the ground. Like you look at 1, it might be a perfect hole for that mini driver, 2, 5, 7, 9 is kind of perfect for it, 10. You can go down the list. Just little things like that, I guess, broadens your capabilities of options.”

Might we see a full Brooks Koepka bag makeover coming soon? Only time will tell.

Taylor Moore speeds up

Koepka was clipped by one shot Thursday for the overnight lead by Taylor Moore, who has a new driver and putter this week.

The driver may not look like a huge change on its face, as it’s still a Ping G440 K driver, but he’s gone to a head with a half-degree lower loft and more weight forward via hot melt. He’s also gone back to the Mitsubishi Diamana GT 60 TX shaft he used last season.

Why the sudden change for one of the 25 best drivers of the ball on the PGA Tour? Because Moore has gotten faster over the course of the season.

When Moore fit into the new 440 K last offseason, Ping Tour Rep Kenton Oates said his speed was down, in the mid-to-high 170s, which led them out of the GT and into a softer Diamana Whiteboard 63 X, not the TX flex he previously used. Oates said that’s not all that uncommon.

Moore went to the softer flex because he needed a little more spin and flight, but now he’s swinging about 4 mph faster, allowing them to go back to his old shaft and bring the loft back down.

“I would think he would stay in this for a really long time because he’s had success with it in the past and now it’s working in the head that he likes,” Oates said.

The putter change was something Moore has been working on with Ping Tour Rep Jeff Brown, who originally brought Moore in to Ping as a junior. Brown believed an Anser-style hosel would work best for Moore than the slant neck he was currently using.

The Ally Blue H, which has been finding a few bags of late, won out thanks to its square shape, which fits Moore’s visual preferences for alignment. It also has a flat milled face, as Moore likes to see the ball come off the face hot.

In his opening-round 62, he was 8th in SG: Putting and 27th in SG: OTT, so needless to say, both changes paid dividends quickly.

Usually when we do a golf-ball test or sit down to pull apart new gear for Fully Equipped, it’s just Jake Morrow and I nerding out and acting as the guinea pigs. We spend our time traveling to OEM facilities across the country, testing the latest gear ourselves and then talking about the deep technical details on the podcast or analyzing data for our Fully Fit series. We track spin axis, efficiency metrics and landing angles until our eyes go blurry. It’s a pure gearhead echo chamber.

But for this session, we wanted to get away from all that. We wanted to see how a real ball-fitting actually impacts guys who play the game for fun —the everyday player.

So we headed out to the practice tee on a crisp Tuesday morning at Lake Merced Golf Club in California, set up a launch monitor and brought along four normal golfers. These guys represent a true cross-section of amateur golf. They play a ton, sure, but they don’t spend their late nights reading up on core compressions, mantle layers or cover formulations.

To help us make sense of it all, we had Tony, an expert from Titleist’s ball-fitting team — this dude is amazing, by the way — help us walk the guys through the mobile fitting app to show us exactly how to optimize a player’s flight windows by tracking real shots.

The philosophy of the fitting

But before watching the guys hit a single shot, we need to talk about the core philosophy here. It’s a concept I preach until I’m blue in the face: you must build your golf bag around your golf ball, not the other way around. Think about it. The ball is the single piece of equipment you use on literally every single stroke during a round. Putters get benched, drivers are used sparingly, but the ball is always there. Yet, most amateurs treat it like an afterthought. They’ll dig out whatever random, scuffed-up sleeve is sitting at the bottom of their bag, or they’ll buy a dozen based entirely on a commercial they saw during a major championship.

Tony started our guys on a hitting progression that looks exactly like what pros do on the PGA Tour. Instead of letting them rip drivers to chase big ball speed numbers and long-drive bragging rights, the Titleist system forces you to work backwards.

We started small. Half-wedge pitch shots from about 50 yards. Then we moved to full pitching wedges, transitioned into mid-irons and finally let them hit the big stick. Throughout the whole process, Tony was looking closely at three specific things: peak height, total spin rate, and descent angle. The goal isn’t about finding an extra 5 yards on that one perfect, flushed strike you hit every three rounds. Good fittings are about damage control. They’re about raising your floor. If we can fix your mediocre swings and slight mishits so they still carry the bunker and hold the green, your scores will drop instantly.

Meet the testers

CJ McDonald (11 handicap)

CJ is your classic mid-handicap amateur. He showed up already playing the standard Pro V1, a choice he made simply because he likes a soft feel around the greens. He’s got a pretty reliable swing, but when his timing gets a little sloppy, his typical miss is a weak block that leaks out to the right. During the testing, CJ’s baseline numbers were actually incredibly efficient. He showed great height control across the board, and the app confirmed something rare: he was already playing the right ball for his swing.

Matt Hegerty (2 handicap)

Matt is a serious player. He relies entirely on natural feel and still plays fairways, irons and wedges that are easily 10 years old. He flushes it, but he naturally hits a very low, piercing line drive. His main goal for the session was finding a way to get his iron shots higher in the air without having to change his actual swing mechanics. His data put him right on a razor’s edge between two completely different models, showing just how much ball construction can alter a player’s landing conditions. He is someone I can’t wait to get to TPI for a full bag fitting (his whole life will change).

Chris Mullin (15 handicap)

The basketball Hall of Famer joined us on the tee, playing to a 15 handicap. Chris openly admitted that his historical method for picking a golf ball was just making sure it didn’t have mud on it before he teed it up. He’s incredibly athletic and creates a ton of speed, but his delivery can be erratic, which leads to wildly different launch windows. Watching his ball flight change on the monitor was a massive wake-up call for him regarding how much the right ball can salvage a mishit.

Carl Bergstrom (6.5 handicap)

Carl is a strong single-digit handicap who naturally creates powerful, dynamic impact conditions. He came out looking for a way to tighten his dispersion and find a more predictable carry distance, especially with his long irons and woods. A higher spinner of the golf ball, he can easily cause a ball to balloon and stall in the wind. Carl’s data was a perfect example of using equipment to cut down excessive spin without losing short-game control.

The performance wins of the day

Truth be told, the knowledge gained by all these guys was the biggie. Most golfers don’t pay that much attention to the ball. Whether these testers went from the wrong ball to the right one or were already in a good spot or anything in between, they all now have a deep understanding of who they are on the golf course and where they could go by playing the right ball. If anyone really gained substantial performance in terms of numbers, in was Matt Hegerty, who is already a 1-2 handicap. He hits nothing but knee-highs fastballs with the longer clubs, and swapping into the Pro V1x or Pro V1x Left Dash, he immediately found the peak height he so desperately needed. He’s now created new opportunities for himself on the golf course. Bunkers he stayed away from he can now carry, and back pins he was scared of can now be attacked.

To understand why these flights change so drastically, you have to ignore the marketing fluff and look strictly at how these balls are built. The standard Titleist Pro V1 is a three-piece ball engineered for a mid-launching trajectory and mid-spin across the bag. It has the softest feel of the three options. It’s built for the player who wants a penetrating flight that cuts cleanly through crosswinds while keeping that classic, responsive click around the putting surface.

The Titleist Pro V1x is a four-piece construction with a specialized dual core. This ball is explicitly designed to fly higher and spin more than the standard Pro V1 on full shots. It’s the perfect answer for players who need physical help getting the ball up into the air, or guys who need extra spin to stop their irons on firm, fast greens.

Then you have the Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash. This one is a bit of a unicorn. It uses the same four-piece dual-core structure as the standard X, but the performance profile is completely flipped. Left Dash is built to fly high but spin remarkably low in the long game, and it feels noticeably firmer off the face. It’s a specialized tool for high-speed players or heavy spinners who want a towering launch window but need to keep their spin from ballooning out of control.

At the end of the day, our morning at Lake Merced proved ball fittings aren’t just for guys playing on TV. When you find the specific model that optimizes your launch windows and descent angles, you gain total control over your flight. And elite golf, no matter your handicap, is all about ball control.

My conclusions

The golf ball is king. It’s just that simple. I don’t care how good your clubs are, if the ball is wrong your game will never be great. I can make a bad set good with the right ball, but I can’t make a bad ball good with the right set.

Titleist does ball fitting right, and the app process is worth your time if you want to get better. Our testing proved that.

Aaron Rai broke through for his second PGA Tour victory and first major title at the PGA Championship Sunday, and it brings to light perhaps the most eclectic gear setup to win a major in several years.

It starts at the top with Rai’s seven-year-old TaylorMade M6 driver. Rai, a gear free agent, has used other drivers over the last couple of years for stretches, but he always kept returning to the TaylorMade high-forgiveness model from 2019. There’s very clearly an emotional attachment with the club, and he showed why this week.

While Rai was 66th in the field in driving distance, he was 4th in accuracy, hitting 67 percent of his fairways, including seven of the last eight on Sunday.

We're potentially five holes away from a 2019 TaylorMade M6 driver winning a major in 2026.

Brandt Snedeker won with a 2017 M2 last week. pic.twitter.com/dGVu1212V6
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 17, 2026

Rai’s victory marks the fifth driver win for TaylorMade in the last five major championships. Those wins came with either the newer Qi10 (2024) or Qi4D (2026) by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

But perhaps most notable about his bag are the covers on his TaylorMade P7TW irons. Rai has used iron covers for the entirety of his career and he explained in a 2021 interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour radio that he still uses them to remind himself of where he came from.

“I grew up in very much a working-class family, and golf has always been a very expensive game,” Rai said. “I started from the age of 4 years old, and my dad used to pay for the equipment, pay for my memberships, my entry fees. And it wasn’t money that we really had, to be honest, but he’d always buy me the best clubs.

“When I was about 7 or 8 years old, [my dad] bought me a set of Titleist 690 MBs, and they were like 800-1,000 pounds back then, just for a set of clubs for a kid. I cherished them. When we used to go out and practice, he used to clean every single groove afterward with a pin and with baby oil.”

Not long after, Rai’s father went out and purchased the iron covers to protect the investment.

“To protect the golf clubs, he thought it would be good to put iron covers on it,” Rai said. “I’ve pretty much had iron covers on all of my sets ever since just to appreciate the value of what I have, and it all started with that first set.

“Although on the PGA Tour, we get given equipment, and we get given everything that we need, it’s more out of principle. The value of not losing perspective of what I have and where I am.

“The covers are going to stay, I’m sorry.”

In using a TaylorMade Spider Tour V, Aaron Rai is going to become the fifth major winner in the last six to use a Spider putter in the last six.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy won the other four with the Spider Tour X.

The Spider Tour V is TaylorMade's most forward CG… pic.twitter.com/t0xu8GtbDe
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 17, 2026

Rai also keeps up a tremendous run of TaylorMade Spider putters, with the family now taking five of the last six major winners. Rai uses a Spider Tour V, TaylorMade’s most forward CG mallet, which gives the putter a blade-like feeling, with a flow neck for added face rotation.

The putter is a fairly new addition to the bag, first appearing last fall at the BMW PGA Championship.

He also plays both a TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood and 5-wood, and the fairway wood model has been in the bag for each of the last six major champions.

When you find a club that you hit well, best not to question it. What’s that they say about never looking a gift horse in the mouth?

But there’s always something that makes us gear nerds want to overanalyze everything.

And so brings us to the dilemma of GOLF’s Jake Morrow, who, until very recently, was going through some major struggles with the driver. That all changed when he received his new Titleist GTS3 that he was fit for at Titleist’s TPI facility.

It’s a new GTS3 with the Graphite Design Tour AD-FI shaft, which Morrow didn’t really expect to fit into, but it’s turned into a weapon.

“I have an Arccos statement that says that I am now a perfect driver of the golf ball and other things are my problem,” Morrow told his fellow GOLF’s Fully Equipped co-host Johnny Wunder on this week’s episode. “I hit some absolute nukes. There was a couple of references to Walmarts being in between me and my coach on some of those shots.”

There’s just one issue. When Morrow put his new driver on the swingweight scale, it checked in at a hefty D8.

As a gear nerd, Morrow naturally reached out to his fitter, TPI’s Hunter Brown, and wondered if it was still the best driver for him.

“I said, ‘Hey, man, my only issue is it on my scale at home. It came out at D8 and that’s a little aggressive,'” he said. “Now, the conversation and after playing four rounds, if everybody told me not to mess with it, I would leave it how it is and I would be happy. But you can tell that the head’s heavy. The shaft is a little soft, but not like in a bad way. My only gripe was for the first two rounds, everything was a left-to-right ball flight.”

Morrow wanted to take the 5-yard fade he was hitting and make it a 5-yard draw by getting the driver down to D6.

But if he was hitting the driver so well, why even bother with it? That was Wunder’s response.

“You’re chasing perfection. And when you said that you had it at D8, my first instinct was like, so what?” he said. “Like, that’s a number that you care about. It’s not a number that matters to the performance of the driver.”

Morrow was going to ask Brown for a weight kit, but Wunder said he would tell him not to send one. The driver works now, don’t mess with a good thing.

“If he sends me the weights to fix it, then I’ll try it,” Morrow said. “If he doesn’t or they get lost in the mail, then I have what I have and I’ll continue to play it.”

Perhaps this is one of those situations where it would have just been better to simply leave well enough alone.

I walked into the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside with a driver I absolutely love. I didn’t want or need anything from the session, which put the pressure squarely on Titleist Master Fitter and dear friend Lucas Bro to find more meat on the bone when I was already completely dialed. My goal wasn’t just chasing raw ball speed; it was about finding pure on-course comfort, stability and a window that allows me to stand on the tee box and just send it with total freedom.

What I walked in with has been well documented. I am playing a TaylorMade Qi4D (9@8.5) that is draw biased, has one miss and provides incredible launch numbers (162 mph, 12 launch, 2400RPM spin). I’ve used it in tournaments, drove it better than I have in years and most importantly, I TRUST IT.

At this point in th game, that word “trust” is HUGE.

The Fitting

Lucas started by breaking down the serious engineering behind the new GTS line. He showed me the thermoformed body, which is essentially split-mass technology that puts all the weight on the extreme fringes of the head. It gives you six independent center of gravity locations per loft to play with, allowing you to manipulate spin by up to 1,000 RPM.

We started with the GTS4 head with the weight slammed forward to look at the low-spin option. I immediately gravitated toward the look at address, and the ball flight was a piercing, heavy bullet. But when Lucas flipped me into GTS2 with the weight all the way to show me the variance, it actually slowed me down. My clubhead speed dropped because I could feel the head trying to square itself up, forcing me to fight my natural release pattern. It’s the perfect example of why getting fit matters.

From there, we migrated over to the GTS3, and the numbers started getting staggering. I was seeing ball speeds jump up to 163 and 164 mph, which at 49 and in the morning climate in Oceanside, Calif., ain’t too shabby. Although I saw some higher ball speeds with the GTS3, my center face contact (i.e. hitting it out of the optimized part of the face) wasn’t there as much as I’d like, and that aspect these days is enough to spin me off. Honestly from a numbers standpoint GTS3 was a tick better than GTS4, and what really blew my hair back was the forgiveness on off-center hits. I caught a couple of toe-bangers that usually lose three to five miles an hour and tumble into the abyss — but the GTS face technology held its own. I actually gained ball speed on a high-toe mishit, clocking 162.5 mph because of how they structured the face topology.

There was just something about GTS4

Over the course of the fitting, my feels and most importantly my eye, kept drifting back to the GTS4, and in the end it was the best setup for me. There is something to be said for optics and how they can impact how you react to a club. The GTS4 sits extremely square to my eye and I feel comfortable drawing it, while the GTS3, although faster overall, has a slightly open look to it in a neutral setting, which for me means I have to work a bit harder to turn it over and keep it from going out to the right. The right miss is the bane of my existence.

To lock in the final build, we played with the SureFit hosel, ultimately taking an 8-degree head and kicking it up to the D3 setting to get 8.75 degrees of loft and an upright lie angle. We also threw a heavier weight into the head because I have a lot of moving parts in my swing and need to feel the club throughout the transition. Getting it to a D4 swing weight only helped to ensure my path consistency which ultimately won the day vs my gamer.

In the end, this fitting wasn’t about a magical distance explosion; it was a victory of subtleties. The GTS gave me a remarkably consistent peak height and a tighter standard deviation, but more importantly, it lowered the physical tax of my swing. This setup requires far less manual manipulation from me to find the fairway.

On the golf course, that means a bad swing turns into a playable miss instead of a scorecard-killing double bogey. I’ll take it. 10/10 Titleist, no further notes.

When Keegan Bradley arrived in Philadelphia for this week’s PGA Championship, something felt more at home.

“I even went out on my deck today when I was at my house and I could smell, like, the northeast,” Bradley said on Monday.

Now, this Philadelphia-native writer challenges the notion that a New England sports fan should ever feel truly comfortable in Philadelphia, but there is some truth to his statement.

What Bradley is smelling is the bent grass of the Northeast. That’s something PGA Tour pros have yet to see in the fairways at any other host site this season.

As the PGA Tour begins on the West Coast and then makes its way to the south, pros often see primarily bermuda grases and overseeded rye grass in the fairways with the occasional appearence of kikuyu and paspalum. Augusta National regressed its greens with bentgrass years ago, but the fairways are still overseeded rye grass.

The PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club is the first chance this season Tour pros have seen a setup of entirely cool season grasses. Add to the fact the cool temperatures and a touch of moisture from overnight rain on Wednesday, and the turf conditions are dramatically different than what players have seen all year.

That means players were making lots of decisions around their wedge setup to optimize for those unique turf conditions, and the man guiding most of the field through that change was Vokey Tour rep Aaron Dill.

“That opens up some unique challenges in wedge selection because now we have some opportunities to change a couple things if we feel like conditions warrant it,” Dill told GOLF.

What players are seeing at Aronimink

Bent grass naturally grows straight up and is cut tight. So it feels like there’s a small cushion underneath before you hit firm ground. Dill said that can make it very satisfying to pitch and chip the ball around Aronimink’s greens.

Earlier in the week, it seemed like there was going to be more rain in the forecast and softer conditions, but the weather didn’t materialize. The course recieved just about a quarter-inch or rain Wednesday night and none more is expected for the rest of the week.

Contrary to popular belief, Dill said the transition to bent grass could potentially lead to players opting for wider soles and more bounce with their wedges.

“Unlike Bermuda, which has more of a grain structure to it, the bent’s just … it’s kind of soft underneath, so it might not fold over like Bermuda will, but you can produce a nice divot with it,” Dill said.

But without the expected moisture (and conditions expecting to dry out more), Dill said the decision making for wedge changes was influenced more for conditions in the rough rather than the fairway.

The fescue rough at Aronimink isn’t overly long by major championship standards, but Dill said there was lots of variation in how the ball was sitting in the rough. Some balls would sit on top of the rough, while others have fallen toward the middle or all the way to the bottom.

There’s also the more than 170 bunkers dotting the Donald Ross layout. With so many sand traps, Dill said many players were making decisions about their wedges based on them.

What wedges players are using

With the conditions firming up, it was the rough and the bunkers that were driving most of the grind decisions.

Despite the dramatic shift in turf, Dill said players make subtle changes to their wedges, especially at major championships. While many players are sticking with what they have, Dill said the common grinds he’s seeing players switch into are the L, A+ and K*, while many players are still staying in the T-Grind, the most popular grind on Tour.

Those grinds all represent versatility, giving players tools they can use for mutltiple different lies. One common thing Dill said was the goal of finding a wedge that got through the rough faster.

“On tour over the years, we started seeing some loyal M Grind players who were finding that sole to be a little too bouncy for their liking,” said Dill. “Those players found the leading edge of the A+ sat a bit lower, and the wedge moved faster through the ground, unlocking a bit more versatility.”
The 2013 Masters champion is one such player, regularly gaming a 58A+ on the PGA TOUR.

“If you’re playing an M grind today and you feel like it’s not moving fast enough, you might switch to an A+ because it’s essentially an M with no ribbon. It moves to the rough faster,” Dill said. “If we go thinner, if we remove some bounce, we often will have players comment on it moving faster and freer through that style of condition.”

Meanwhile players in the T, Vokey’s narrowest sole, are considering slightly wider sole options like the L or K* to give them more forgiveness out of the bunkers.

Dill also said that the variability in the rough is changing strategy for some players as they may opt for sand wedges with less loft than their lob wedge to get a better strike.

One of the PGA Tour’s best players over the past eight months has apparently been playing with a ball that would be legal under the USGA and R&A’s proposed rollback.

As first reported by Golf Channel on Tuesday night, the Titleist prototype Pro V1x Double Dot ball Cameron Young began using last summer would conform under the USGA and R&A’s new ODS Test conditions.

Both Titleist and the USGA declined to comment for this story.

To curb the extreme driving distances at the game’s highest levels, the USGA and R&A announced in 2023 a change to the Overall Distance Standard used to test golf balls. The rollback, which is slated to be implemented in the professional game in 2028 and recreational play by 2030, would see the testing conditions for balls changed to a 125-mph clubhead speed (up from 120) and launch angle increased to 11 degrees (up from 10). Balls would still need to fly no farther than 317 yards with a 3-yard tolerance.

“Obviously, there is no conforming list,” Young said at the PGA Championship on Wednesday. “I suppose I read something that said it passed that test, but I wasn’t aware of that until very recently. So at no point was that a consideration. It was just really me trying to optimize my golf, and it’s the ball that seems to work the best for me.”

Young put the ball in play for the first time at the Wyndham Championship in August and won by six strokes. On Wednesday he said he found out just a few weeks ago that the ball would be conforming under the new rule.

Now a three-time PGA Tour winner, Young first tested the ball — which is one of Titleist’s Customized Performance Option (CPO) balls designed to fine-tune performance and flight characteristics — about two years ago. Titleist’s director of tour research and validation Fordie Pitts delivered the finished prototypes to Young at the Wyndham, and he has played the ball ever since.

Interestingly, Data Golf looked at Young’s 50-round driving distance average since he made the switch last August and noticed he’s lost about 3 yards off the tee. But his accuracy is up dramatically this season; he ranks 46th in the category, finding more than 61 percent of his fairways, a rise of 121 spots from last year. He ranks 6th in SG: Off the Tee, up from 31st.

Why this has garnered attention during one of the biggest weeks of the year is due to Young’s marginal driving losses. If he’s losing only a couple of yards per drive with a rolled-back ball, some might argue the rollback might not accomplish what it set out to do.

Cameron Young revealed this morning that he recently became aware his Titleist Pro V1x Double Dot prototype golf ball would be conforming under the new proposed ODS test conditions set to be implemented for golf's roll back in 2028.

Said he noticed no distance lost.

Young has… pic.twitter.com/Nv4M3Vz5cn
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 13, 2026

Titleist identified Young as having unique delivery characteristics, which could be optimized by the Double Dot prototype. From what Titleist has divulged about the prototype, the ball has a lower spin and flatter flight than the standard Pro V1x. Young has a naturally strong ball flight with his irons, and the ball helped optimize his launch conditions.

“For me, the biggest thing, like I said, is the irons,” Young said Wednesday. “This ball is easier to control with the irons. It doesn’t spin as much, and it just allows me to be better with my distance control just because it’s more consistent.”

Since he added the ball, he’s worked to optimize the top end of his bag for its lower-spinning flight, adding an 11-degree GT3 driver, high-launching GT1 3-wood and a new GTS3 7-wood, his first time using the club type.

“The driver is kind of the easiest thing to deal with, I feel like,” he said. “For me to get it where it needed to be, I had to just add a little bit of spin, and it kind of comes out at a perfectly playable range.”

In March, Young unleashed a 375-yard bomb with that new GT3 setup and Double Dot ball on the 72nd hole of the Players Championship that was the longest drive recorded on TPC Sawgrass’ 18th hole in the ShotLink era. But while the ball wasn’t developed with Young in mind, it has been a perfect fit for him and come during the height of his career thus far.

“I don’t think any of us are out here playing the ball that goes the farthest,” Young said. “I think you’d struggle to find a single person that’s doing that. We’re all sacrificing a certain amount of things that we feel are worth it, control with irons, control with wedges. For me, that’s the biggest thing is being able to control spin.”

Conforming or not in 2028 — or 2030, as the governing bodies are floating the idea of delaying implementation — Young is convinced that the Double Dot is the best ball for him.

“I was kind of surprised in a sense, but at the same time, it didn’t change that I had played well with it, and I was comfortable,” Young said of learning of the ball’s conformance under the proposed rule. “I feel like I’m playing a golf ball that’s best for how I’m playing the game at the moment. If that works out to mean that this goes into effect and I’m still playing the ball however many years from now makes it an easy change.”

After a buzzy, nearly two-month pre-seeding on global tours, Titleist is pulling back the cover on its latest metalwoods.

The company is announcing its new GTS2, 3 and 4 drivers along with GTS2 and 3 fairway woods, the most adjustable club line ever from Titleist, thanks to increased use of Titleist’s Proprietary Matrix Polymer construction.

“When we talk about driver design, it’s never about the one feature or benefit — it’s about all of them,” said Stephanie Luttrell, Titleist’s senior director of metalwood R&D, said in a release. “Ball speed, forgiveness, spin stability, adjustability, exceptional sound and feel … these are all attributes that golfers care about. It’s our job to design a lineup that elevates performance across the board without sacrificing in key areas, and we feel we’ve done that with GTS.”

Building on the “Generational Technology” from the previous generation of GT metalwoods, the “S” in GTS adds “Speed” and “Stability” to the mix.

The drivers launched on the PGA Tour at the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March and have been gamed by more than 50 players, including Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. The fairway woods launched at the RBC Heritage and Cameron Young quickly added a GTS3 7-wood to his bag. Previously, there was no “3” 7-wood.

What’s new with Titleist GTS metalwoods — and why you should care

Splitting it up

Titleist’s GT drivers introduced the company’s Proprietary Matrix Polymer for the crown of the driver. For GTS, Titleist leveraged the material to make up 60 percent of the driver’s surface, dramatically removing weight from the middle of the head.

Despite taking up 60 percent of the surface area, the PMP material takes up just 13 percent of the driver’s mass, allowing designers to re-allocate that mass to the front and back of the head.

              Titleist

“We’ve essentially been able to evaporate the midsection of the head,” Lutrell told GOLF.com. “What it’s allowed us to do is take 40 grams of titanium mass out, and now we’ve got almost 30 grams at our fingertips. In an engineering world, the more discretionary mass we have, the more we can leverage it to improve performance.”

That extra mass was split between the back of the head to increase stability and low and forward to boost speed and launch dynamics.

The split mass construction gives the GTS drivers the ability to hit both inertia targets and ideal CG positions for each head.

Syncing up speed

To add the “speed” component of GTS, Luttrell and the metalwoods team took aim at aerodynamics and the face of the driver.

All three driver heads have new aerodynamic shapes to help reduce drag and get the club to move faster through the air. On GTS2 and GTS3, the tail end of the club is raised to keep airflow closer to the crown.

When it comes to the face, Titleist has morphed the Speed Ring of the previous generation into the new Speed Sync Face construction.

A look behind the new Titleist Speed Sync Face.

              Jack Hirsh/GOLF

With Speed Sync, the top of the speed ring has been removed, allowing the top of the face to flex more. This is important because as driver faces have gotten taller, players have responded by hitting the ball higher up on the face.

Speed Sync gets more ball speed out of those high face strikes while also preserving spin retention. The technology is one of the things that allowed the GTS4 to become a much more playable product this generation because of the strike variability introduced by low-spin heads.

The Spin Sync Face is tuned to each head to maximize performance for the unique head shapes.

More adjustable (and fittable) than ever

With the ability to precisely control CG positions in each head, Titleist has created a CG spectrum in which none of the drivers overlap. Each driver now has the ability to move CG forward and aft for the first time.

The GTS2 has adjustable CG for the first time.

With the heavyweight in the rear, the GTS2 is the most stable and highest launching driver in the lineup, as in years past. While moving the heavyweight to the forward position moves up the CG position, increasing speed and lowering spin, it doesn’t meet the CG position of the GTS3 with its heavyweight in the rear position.

The same line of demarcation exists between the GTS3 in the forward position and the GTS4 in the rear position. This allows the lineup to fill in all the gray areas of where the CG needs to fall for a player to perform best.

“CG depth is a fitting tool, and it’s a tool that allows us to manipulate launch and spin characteristics as well as dynamic closure for players,” Luttrell said. “The more customization we can provide with CG, the more opportunity we have to unlock performance for players and better fit their unique needs.”

The heel-to-toe adjustable weight track from last year’s GT3 returns to the GTS3 and was added to the GTS4 to add more customization options. While the GTS2 has two adjustable front and back flat weights, fitters can also change the weight in the tracks on GTS3 and GTS4 to move CG forward and aft.

GTS4 has also become a much more useful fitting tool, having been increased in size to 460 cc. Now players can still get the low spin and forward CG performance from the “4” model, but they don’t have trade forgiveness. Luttrell said the new “4” is just as forgiving as the GT3.

All the drivers will come stock with the heavyweight forward, the fastest position, to help win ball-speed battles against other stock drivers, with the goal of a fitting dialing in the proper CG location.

Brighter face = better strike

The GTS fairway wood line also benefits from an increased use of composite material in the crown that wraps around the sides of the clubhead.

There are two distinct shapes, with the GTS2 being a choice for players who like shallower-faced fairway woods like the last generation’s GT1 fairway wood, which proved popular on the PGA Tour. The GTS3 is both more compact and has a deeper face.

But the most striking difference is the new high-polish silver faces on the fairway woods, which are designed to promote the player covering the ball more effectively. The silver face appears to show more loft to most players.

This was something derived from Titleist Senior Director of Player Promotions J.J. Van Wezenbeeck, who brought prototype GT fairway woods on Tour with silver faces to see how they’d perform. Cameron Young is using a prototype GT1 3Tour 3-wood with a silver face.

“J.J. brought out silver-faced prototypes on tour, and they had a real impact on how some players delivered the club,” Luttrell said. “When they saw more loft, they started hitting down on the ball more and just struck it better overall.”

The GTS Metalwood lineup

There are three driver models (2, 3 and 4) and two fairway wood models (2 and 3) in the GTS lineup.

What is it: The GTS3 is a distinctly deeper-faced and more compact profile than GTS2. The CG track from the previous generation has been replaced bt two adjustable flat weights on the sole. The stock configuration is an 11 g weight in the heel and a 5 g weight in the toe. For the first time, the “3” model is being offered in a 21-degree 7-wood loft.

Available lofts: 15.0, 16.5, 18.0, 21.0

Who it’s for: Players with steeper deliveries and who prioritize off-the-tee performance with their fairway woods.

My take: Titleist is pushing performance in every direction

Titleist was already the category leader in drivers on the PGA Tour when they discounted their lineup by $200 earlier this year, just after every other OEM’s driver launch.
Golfers enjoyed a steal picking up GT drivers for that price.

Still, with the gains made from the new GTS line, those bargain-hunters might feel left out.

Titleist took an outstanding platform and made it better in every meaningful way. GT was just as fast as anything else on the market, despite being available for more than a year. During my fitting, GTS was noticeably faster for me.

All GT drivers already had adjustable weighting to change swing weight with two models offering CG adjustment. Now all of the models have adjustable CG and two of the three can move it heel to toe.

I’ve historically struggled with drivers with a rearward CG, despite my goal to gain more stability with my driver. But during my fitting, I found great success with a GTS3 back-weighted but adding a touch of weight forward. By having mass concentrated in both the rear and forward, I was able to get the stability I needed while also feeling weight forward that I’m used to. In this setup, I was basically hitting balls into a bucket down range while not having to toe bias the club, as I typically have to do with my drivers.

With GTS, the fitting combinations are outstanding, and it truly makes it a platform that can be fit to almost anyone. When you see a club pick up as much conversion as it has on Tour, in the middle of major-championship season, there’s obviously something good happening there.

Titleist was so excited to bring this driver out that they moved the launch up months because they knew they had something. Now they get to benefit from launching the newest driver on the market just as we hit the summer season, when golfers want to buy clubs.

Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh runs you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

Out on the PGA Tour, when one player starts to have success with something, it doesn’t take long for others to take notice and try it for themselves.

Specifically, putters catch fire more often than other clubs.

In recent years, the Jailbird craze of 2023 is an obvious example, with Rickie Fowler, Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley all winniung with Jailbird Cruisers in the span of two months. This year, hordes of pros have flocked to TaylorMade’s Spider putters after the boatloads of wins by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Now, Cam Young’s Phantom 9.5R has the potential to be the next hot putter.

This week, Justin Thomas made a switch to an essential copy of the putter after Young won the Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship over the past month and a half.

Justin Thomas has a new Phantom 9.5R putter that is basically a copy of Cam Young's putter.

“You want Cam’s putter? We were going to get Cam’s putter," Scotty Cameron rep Brad Cloke told me.

Thomas switched from his Phantom 5.5 gamer midway through the RBC Heritage last month… pic.twitter.com/bSLJteD7HQ
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 8, 2026

It’s Thomas’ second switch in a month after he benched his Phantom 5.5 gamer midway through the RBC Heritage last month and played well on the weekend using a backup Newport 2 GSS blade.

He continued using that putter last week, but at Quail Hollow, he wanted to find something that would stick long term. He had worked himself nearly back to 0 strokes gained: putting after a disastrous start to his season at Bay Hill, before a rough opening two rounds at Harbour Town. He lost strokes with the blade last week in Miami.

“Some of it is just calibration. … some of it is just, he, you know, the potential of making good putts but not seeing anything go in type of thing,” Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Brad Cloke told GOLF. “It just seemed like he kind of wanted to start a little bit from scratch this week.”

So he asked for a couple of new putters, including some 9.2Rs, a shape he used previously, and a copy of Cam Young’s 9.5R.

“I literally texted Cameron’s guys and said, ‘Just give me Cam’s putter,'” Thomas said Friday, who played with Young the first two days.

Not an uncommon request.

“Obviously, with the success that Cam is having … these guys are as they see success and they want to see what it’s all about potentially,” Cloke said.

In addition to having a low-bend shaft that mimics the look and toe hang of a jet neck, Thomas’s 5.5 also has smooth face milling that makes it a bit louder-sounding and firmer.

His new putter matches Young’s so it has mid-milled face, but he’s actually preferred the milling on the new 9.5R.

While the putter is Thomas’ spec length and has his grip, it has the same graphite shaft Young uses and a full-length sight line. Thomas found that made it super easy to line up.

“It’s just so hard to putt well if you don’t have confidence, and so hard to have confidence unless you’re seeing it go in more often,” Thomas said. “So I really, really worked hard Monday through Wednesday on my speed and start line and everything to where I just felt like I was in a better place and more freed up when I was putting.”

Through two rounds, it’s been highly successful as Thomas sits at seven under going into the weekend and is gaining nearly three strokes on the field, good for top 10 in the stat.

Sahith Theegala’s newest putter wasn’t random, finally

While the biggest story in Ping putters was Tony Finau’s bizarre technique with a prototype Oslo Onset long putter early in the week, he ended up going back to the Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue Onset he switched to in February.

In fact, Ping’s Ally Blue headshape had a solid week, earning two high-profile conversions, one so surprising Ping Tour Rep Kenton Oates didn’t even take it seriously.

Sahith Theegala, who, as we profiled in Bag Spy this week, loves to practice with random putters every week on the PGA Tour before returning to his longtime Anser gamer, was losing a putting contest on the practice green using an Ally Blue H when Oates hollered over for him to try his gamer.

“He goes, ‘This is what I used Sunday of Cadillac,'” Oates said. “And I go, ‘What?
He goes, ‘Yeah, I think I’m going to use it on Thursday.'”

Theegala followed through on Thursday in the first round of the Truist Championship and kept it in the bag for Friday as well.

Turns out, this wasn’t another random practice putter for Theegala; this is something he worked on with Ping Principal Design Engineer Tony Serrano. He’s actually had the putter for over a year.

Theegala started working on a mallet putter with Serrano, feeling like he could gain forgiveness over his Anser blade.

“The key thing for him is, he has a certain stroke, a certain rotation in his stroke that requires something with some toe down,” Serrano said. “He’s always played an Anser 2 that hang at that 40 or 42 degrees that work perfectly for his stroke.”

The Ally Blue H has the same plumber’s neck hosel Theegala is used to and similar CG and toe hang properties, making it a more natural transition.

At the RSM Classic last November, Serrano and Theegala spent lots of time with a Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue H, but it was the PLD Milled version that ended up going in the bag. Theegala ended up putting a counterbalance grip on it as well, but Serrano didn’t know when or why he added that himself.

A new Ally Blue H is also in the bag of Kristoffer Reitan as the PGA Tour rookie finds himself three off the lead heading into the weekend.

Reitan’s PLD Milled Ally Blue H is virtually identical to the Scottsdale Tec version, complete with the aluminum head, steel sole plate and PEBAX insert. But it was made from scratch to have an uninterrupted sight line.

After visiting Ping’s PLD Putting Lab in February, the Ping team discovered that Reitan needed a putter with more toe hang than the face-balanced model he was using. He loved the Scottsdale TEC feel and visual with the white head, but just wanted a full sight line.

Serrano said it was simply easier to make him a new PLD head than repurpose an existing Scottsdale TEC.

Rory McIlroy returns to Qi4D 3-wood

In his first event back since winning his second green jacket, Rory McIlroy changed the one club he switched out for his his big Masters win.

After using a Qi4D fairway wood since November, McIlroy went back to his Qi10 3-wood for the Masters, and promptly won his fifth straight major for the club.

But that turns out to be a short-term reversion for McIlroy as he’s back in a Qi4D 3-wood at Quail Hollow, where he’s won four times.

McIlroy said on Wednesday the switch was made because his Qi4D had a bit of a left miss.

“I had been using the 4D 3-wood at the start of the season. I noticed that it just had a little bit of a left bias in it,” McIlroy said. “So I went back to an old Qi10 for a while. But that wasn’t, it really wasn’t spinning enough. It’s more like a mini driver than a 3-wood.”

McIlroy actually said that kind of club could be useful at the Memorial, seemingly teasing he’ll use it at Muirfield Village next month, but for this week at Quail Hollow and next week at the PGA Championship, he wanted something with a bit more spin.

He started working on a new 3-wood with the TaylorMade team.

4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimized flight and is available in all lofts.

REFINED ATTRIBUTES, BIG CHANGES

Engineers conducted an objective analysis of all the performance attributes and discovered new methods to enhance performance and confidence.
Sit points, lie angles, address views, and center of gravity locations were all updated based on Tour feedback and the expertise of leading fitters worldwide, ensuring the optimal fairway across skill levels.

TOUR-PROVEN TECHNOLOGIES

New and improved cut-through Speed Pocket™ protects ball speed and reduces spin on low-face strikes.
Advanced CAD modeling creates a design with a clean and powerful sound, a foundation for TaylorMade fairway performance.

“Post-Augusta we went back and looked at the data and he was actually getting center strikes that were drawing too much,” TaylorMade Tour rep Keith Sbarbaro said. “So the club was acting like he was toeing it. It was kind of gear-affecting left.

“So what we did is we moved the CG a little more toward the toe to try and square that up. The other thing he was getting some under-spinning shots that were knuckling a little bit.”
