Motocaddy recently sent me one of their new Motocaddy PRO 5000 Laser Rangefinders to try out. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t thinking of much of the delivery. There’s a TON of rangefinders on the market right now, mostly made from the same factories with the same features and benefits, but Motocaddy did manage to sneak in a little hidden feature. If you’re a Motocaddy push cart or electric caddie user, it makes a ton of sense.

To clear the bases right away; the PRO 5000 has all the features that you expect out of a rangefinder in 2026. 6x magnification to see what you’re pointing at, a slope switch to turn slope math on and off for use in tournament play, the ability to switch between yards and meters with a +/-1 yard accuracy promise, a magnet on the side to stick to a golf cart (which helps to misplace the rangefinder quite often, ask me I would know), a 350-yard pin lock with a 1500-yard total distance capture and an adjustable diopter to make sure that you can actually see what you’re trying to range. It also has USB-C which is a fantastic benefit that every single rangefinder company, I’m looking at you Bushnell, should implement so we can charge our rangefinders in the car on the way to the course.

I also really like the look and feel of the rangefinder. It’s heavy enough to feel like it’s well built and not plastic feeling, but small enough to fit in the hands very ergonomically. The stormtrooper-esque look is cool, and the rangefinder comes off as premium, not cheap. I can’t tell you how many rangefinders there are on the market that feel like they were just made to be made. Those ones are cheap for a reason. It’s clear that Motocaddy made some good decisions with their factory when deciding what was important in their new offering, which brings us to the differentiator: the case.

The case would appear to be similar to other cases on the market. A nice hardshell with both a zipper and a bunjee. No matter what terrain you’re battling you aren’t going to lose your rangefinder because of the case. But it’s the backside of the case that makes this the perfect choice for Motocaddy users. There’s a little receiver slot on the back so you can attach the case to the Motocaddy accessory station. The accessory station is the hub of the cart up by the power control and where you hold onto the electric caddy. It’s got several attachment points for sand bottle holders, scorecard holders, phone holders and other accessories which now include your rangefinder case. A very simple way to keep the rangefinder at arm’s reach without having to dig it out of a bag pocket, or grab it off of a bag from a less than ideal position. It may sound silly but I spent a year getting my rangefinder out of it’s case from the position it hangs on the bag, and once the bag is actually on the Motocaddy electric caddy, it’s actually quite annoying to reach the rangefinder. The new positioning right up top is perfect, and it makes this whole thing make sense.

Now, you may be thinking what I’m thinking. The whole selling point of the rangefinder is actually the case. And I can’t blame you for thinking that, I thought it too. This may have been a better $50 accessory purchase for the case than the whole rangefinder itself. But after using the rangefinder for a couple of rounds, there’s no harm in it. It does the job well, and for $250 it’s worth the buy if you are looking to buy a new rangefinder you can trust that’s convenient to use with your Motocaddy electric caddie. Plus, they don’t just sell the case.

Of the gizmos and gear that revolutionized the game, there are sexier-looking things than the original golf rangefinder. But, for sure, it opened our eyes.

Let us tell you how things were back in the day.

How far to the pin? Try wandering the fairway looking for a damn yardage marker. Or do some math — the yardage book says it’s 173 from the back edge of that bunker … or maybe it’s that other bunker? Or just eyeball it. Wait, you don’t know what eyeballing is?

Now we just point and click and boom! — 108 yards to the pin, 97 to clear the pond, 115 to the back fringe. ’Twasn’t ever thus.

A Scot invented the first rangefinder back in the late 18th century. The shocker: It was used to survey canals, not golf courses. The first consumer laser rangefinder debuted in the mid-1960s, but it wasn’t until 1995 when Bushnell had the eureka moment that would change the game forever, introducing the Yardage Pro 400, the first golf-specific handheld laser rangefinder.

Of course, tech only grows more sophisticated, and current models do everything but grill your hot dog at the turn. They beep and vibrate to confirm you’re locked in on the proper target; factor in elevation, wind and even temperature to provide a “plays like” adjustment (disable this function in tournament play or get DQ’d!); provide hole maps; offer shot tracking; connect to your apps.

Only the eternal question remains: Can you hit your yardage?

As a form of “repayment,” he offered to take the rangefinder for a spin and offer an honest assessment. And with that, I’ll hand the equipment mic over to Kris.

Not all rangefinders are created equal. During my time in the industry, I’ve had the opportunity to test more units than I can remember. Some lasted a few months before things started to go haywire. Others were like the Energizer Bunny and kept hanging around.

You always want the latter, provided it’s easy to use and doesn’t break the bank. No one wants to pay full boat for a rangefinder that takes a PhD to figure out. After testing the Coolshot Pro II, I can assure you Nikon’s newest rangefinder earns high marks in both departments.

The amount of features included with the rangefinder is impressive — from the Dual Locked on Echo to the ID (incline/decline) technology. The easy-to-read display for the slope adjustment is an added bonus that I didn’t know I needed. It’s very clear to decide if it is being calculated uphill or downhill, and which number is the playable number versus the static number. It’s all about ease of use for me.

The optic also gives you an added level of confidence when you lock on the target and know that you are getting a number to what you intend to shoot, rather than something that could be behind or in front of the target. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to shoot a bunker or pin, only to get a different number on the screen. It’s frustrating and shouldn’t happen when you’re paying $300-plus for a unit.

Something else I appreciated was the overall size and weight. It’s big enough to fit in the palm of your hand but not get lost in the cart. The lightweight frame also makes toting it around a breeze.

Expect the unexpected. In major championships, you can count on seeing something you didn’t count on.

The early goings of the U.S. Women’s Open have delivered on that front. In Thursday’s opening round alone, for instance, world No. 1 Jin Young Ko shot an eyebrow-raising seven-over 79 that left her tied for 126th in a 156-player field. Another head-turner came from Michelle Wie West, who managed to make a triple-bogey 8 on the seaside par-5 18th hole without hitting a ball in the water; she left a shot nesting in a tree.

Another of Day One’s unexpected moments centered on a player of less prominent stature: LPGA rookie Natthakritta Vongtaveelap, who was disqualified after her caddie used a rangefinder on multiple occasions. 

A slip-up of that kind on such an elite stage? That was a surprise. But the thing about surprises is that they often double as teachable moments. If we’re lucky, we learn from them. 

You can see where this is headed.

Now, it would seem, is as good a time as ever for a quick refresher on the rules around rangefinders. You’re forgiven for not knowing them cold.

On January 1, 2019, after a long life as golf outlaws, the gizmos also known as as DMDs (distance measuring devices) were brought into the fold. They were declared legal—with qualifications. Under Rule 4.3a, rangefinders were allowed, but not all of their functions, and not in all events. As the written guidelines note, a “golf course or the Committee in charge of a competition does have the option to prohibit the use of distance-measuring devices by Local Rule.”

Not all tournament guidelines are the same. Consider, for instance, the USGA’s own competitions. In big amateur events (the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Junior Amateur, for example) competitors and their caddies can use rangefinders, but not the slope function. In all of the Open championships, on the other hand, rangefinders are forbidden. Vongtaveelap was DQ’d under that Local Rule.

Rule 4.3a allows players to carry devices with prohibited functions, provided they don’t use those functions. In this case, though, the caddie was seen employing the rangefinder more than once, and he acknowledged as such his misunderstanding.

It was, in other words, a simple ruling. And it reminds us of a few other words to live by. In any tournament, expect the unexpected. And always check the Local Rules.
