Miura’s brand and legacy are built on ultra-premium single-pieced forged irons. Those irons can be played by a much wider range of golfers than you might think, but now they have a multi-piece iron for the aspiring golfer that looks like and feels like a Miura, too.

Miura’s new PI-402 iron is Miura’s attempt to deliver a design worthy of the Miura name while also offering a level of speed and forgiveness they didn’t previously offer.

“For the first time in Miura’s history, we have a multi-piece iron that looks and feels like a Miura one-piece forged iron,” Miura President Anthony Newville told GOLF. “That was the huge focus for us with this model: to have something with technology and forgiveness that still sounds and feels like the irons people associate with Miura.”

The new iron introduces a host of new technologies to help the target golfer, including a hot-rolled nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel face, 35-gram tungsten weights, a TPU vibration-control plate and a new Kissaki sole design for better turf interaction.

Aesthetically, the iron also features new, cleaner cosmetics than its predecessor, making it look right at home in Miura’s lineup.

What’s actually new with Miura PI-402 irons — and why you should care

Achieving the Miura feel with speed

With traditional game-improvement irons, sound and feel usually suffer because of different construction methods from those used in forged irons.

But with the PI-402, feel was always the main design goal.

To achieve this in the multi-piece construction, Miura used a TPU vibration plate inside the head to dampen the unwanted sound and then 30-35 grams of tungsten were placed right behind the center of the club face. The placement helps create the solid, satisfying Miura feel and sound at impact.

“We then strategically use tungsten so center of gravity placement as well as the TPU, the thermoplastic urethane, really is what makes it feel like a Miura,” Newville said. “Strategically putting those two things in through the design of Shinei Miura is what gives the 402 that Miura type of feel.”

Optimizing for strike location

Miura’s most recent iron, the TC-202, featured the company’s Y-Grind sole, a pre-worn leading edge that allows the club to enter the turf more efficiently.

With the PI-202 targeted for a much different player, one who has a shallower swing, Miura created a new, Kissaki sole, which is their interpretation of the modern V-sole design.

“The Kissaki sole is inspired by the tip of a traditional Japanese sword,” Newville said. “It helps the club enter and exit the turf cleanly and works across a wide range of attack angles. We wanted something that wouldn’t dig but still gets into the ground quickly and releases.

“We played around with sole tech quite a bit and landed on this because it has enough bounce to not dig, but it also has the perfect blend to help those players. It’s that gentle blend of trying to get the sole into the ground as quickly as possible, but not get stuck.”

The placement of the tungsten also plays into the target players’ shallower swing, as those players tend to strike the ball lower on the face. A lower CG helps that player even more to get the launch up, even from balls that are hit low on the face.

A complete Miura lineup

The PI-402 establishes the most forgiving iron in the Miura lineup and sits at the other end of the spectrum from the MB-101.

“Those pole positions are wildly important for us,” Newville said. “Miura started as a brand played by some of the best ball strikers on the planet, but in the evolution of the company, we’ve moved to making models for every type of player.”

Newville described the iron’s forgiveness level as similar to the IC-602 hollow-body, but players who need more help with launch and speed will gravitate to the 402.

The iron still has fairly compact shaping compared to competitors in the category, but it will help to reinforce that Miura isn’t just for elite ball strikers anymore.

What is it: A more compact game-improvement style iron designed for fast ball speeds and without super strong lofts.

Who it’s for: Players looking for speed and forgiveness in a more traditional shape without sacrificing feel.

My take: The Miura iron for everyone

Miura irons are already more playable than you might first realize, but now there’s an iron in their catalog that looks and feels just like all the others while also allowing almost any golfer to enjoy it.

This iron is going to be slightly smaller and slightly weaker than others it’s competing with, but I think that will end up giving it an advantage simply in the looks department.

The new PI-402 looks much more like a Miura iron than its predecessor, and once people actually get to play it, they will have the revelation that Miura irons aren’t just for elite ball strikers.

I really like the addition of the new Kissaki sole, as we’ve seen turf interaction become much more of a focal point in iron design over the past few years.

That’s the kind of innovation that will help establish Miura as a brand for any golfer and not just the best iron players.

As a gear-free agent, Justin Rose can pick whatever clubs he wants to play, and the irons he chooses make gear nerds salivate.

After spending last year with a split set involving Titleist 620 CB long irons, Rose has now moved into a full set of Miura irons, split between the new TC-202 cavity backs and the MC-502 blades in the short irons.

That blended iron set was dialed last week at the Farmers Insurance Open, as Rose was second in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach, on his way to a seven-shot win.

The TC-202 is one of the newest additions to the Miura lineup, replacing the highly successful TC-201, which was the last Miura iron to win on the PGA Tour before Rose’s victory last summer at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

A new T-Weight Bar in the back cavity combines the heel-toe weighting that made the TC-201 so forgiving with the center mass distribution found in the CB 57. By placing the mass right behind the sweet spot, the T-Weight Bar helps optimize both trajectory control and the sound and feel of the TC-202.

The TC-202s also have a progressive CG that gets lower as you go down through the set, which is why Rose chooses them for his 4-, 5- and 6-iron to help launch the ball in the air.

Meanwhile, his MC-502 short irons are a set of blades that focus on playability, two things that usually don’t go hand-in-hand. But the notch along the back of the iron moves mass lower, where it’s more useful, while allowing the club to keep a compact profile.

Last year, Justin Rose’s win at the FedEx St. Jude Classic came with a new club that week. This week, his dominant win at the Farmers Insurance Open also came with a new club in the bag.

While Rose shocked many by winning the FedEx late last season with a new Callaway driver that he hadn’t used on course at all prior to Thursday. This week at Torrey Pines, he apparently got more reps in with his new TaylorMade Qi4D 7-wood.

The club replaced some of the oldest in Rose’s bag as the former World No. 1 has held onto three seven-year-old TaylorMade M6 fairway woods. Rose won with the 5-wood in the bag last season but has swapped it for the 7-wood this week. He still had the M6 3-wood in the bag this week, just like he did in 2019 when he last won the Farmers (albeit a different shaft).

That 3-wood is in place of the R7 Quad Mini driver he used for much of last season, but with Torrey Pines’ brawny length, that was probably more of a situational change than long-term.

Rose is quite the tinker, as the gear-free agent made multiple changes last season, including playing a driver with lead tape wrapped on the shaft under the grip. Since his win in Memphis five months ago, he’s also made changes to his irons, going now to a full set of Miuras, split between the TC-202 cavity backs in the long irons and the MC-502 blades in the short irons. He previously used Titleist 620 CB long irons.

Rose has at times used the full set of Miura 502s, but has settled into the split with the slightly more forgiving TC-202s in the long irons. This win is the first win for a full set of Miura irons since 2021.

The rest of Rose’s bag consists of Vokey wedges. He has yet to switch to the new SM11 and is instead sticking with his SM10s. He rounds out the bag with a Scotty Cameron Phantom T-5 putter.

One of Miura’s most legendary irons is available at retail once again.

The KM-Baby Blades irons, originally designed for the personal use of late Miura founder Katsuhiro Miura, are once again being released in limited quantities.

This is the third release of the Baby Blades, which are 15 percent smaller than Miura’s MB-101 blades to produce an unmatched feel.

“The KM-Baby Blade is leaner, more exacting, and engineered for the golfer who seeks ultimate control and workability,” said Mirua Golf COO Bill Holowaty in a release. “Our goal with the creation of these new KM-Baby Blade irons was to reward commitment and help players realize that they are better ball-strikers than they believed.”

What are the Miura KM-Baby Blades?

As told by his sons, Shinei and Yoshitake Miura, Kutsuhiro, who passed away this May at 82, began crafting the Baby Blades around 2000. He saw the trends in the golf equipment industry and wanted to create something that valued precision and feel over distance.

“At the time, driver heads were becoming larger, and companies were developing and manufacturing heads that offered greater distance and directional stability,” Shinei and Yoshitake said. “Soon after,  irons also began to get larger, and unlike in the past, these new, larger irons evolved to offer greater distance and directional stability without requiring greater skill from the player.

“During this transition, Miura-san felt a strong desire to buck the trend and stay true to the basic performance and shape of a muscle back iron. As the pursuit for greater distance and directional stability evolved, so did the transition to larger heads which were designed to give players a sense of security at the expense of significantly reducing controllability. Miura-san’s vision was to minimize the head size in order to deliver maximum effectiveness with minimal effort.”

The resulting iron is 15 percent smaller than Miura’s MB-101 blades, and this is the third time they’ve been released to the public after limited runs in 2011 and 2019. While being smaller than the MB-101, the KM-Baby Blades maintain the same headweights and lofts, meaning they will actually have increased MOI and an increased thickness around the hitting area, giving them a more solid and soft feel.

With the third Baby Blade’s release, the company has also added the Y-Grind to the sole, honoring Yoshitake’s influence on his family’s company. The Y-Grind, which is found on many of Miura’s popular irons, like the TC-202, adds bounce to the leading edge of the club, allowing it to glide more cleanly through the turf.

Who are the Baby Blades for?

The Baby Blades are certainly not an iron for the masses, and Miura knows that.

That said, anyone who is unafraid of playing a traditional muscle-back iron will be rewarded with an incredible feeling iron. This iron is for the golfer who, like Miura-san, believes technology has cheapened the art of ball striking in golf.

My thoughts!

The Miura KM-Baby Blades irons are a showpiece that will turn heads in any bag (or wall if you so choose). The clean cosmetics are the best looking Baby Blades release and the signature Hanko Stamp, reversed for Miura’s most celebrated designs, is only going to make them more sought after.

Miura is releasing a fitting tribute to their late founder, with a subtle nod to their feature thanks to the addition of Yoshitake’s Y-Grind sole. Not only is there symbolism in that, but that will also enhance the playability of the iron for anyone who games them.

Just before Justin Rose won for the first time in more than two years at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he made a crazy choice.

He switched to a driver he had never used on a golf course.

Just this week, Rose put into play a new Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Max driver that he had only used for one range session on Tuesday.

Callaway’s Johnny Thompson told GOLF that Rose first hit the driver Tuesday afternoon, but didn’t feel well on Wednesday and didn’t play the pro-am. No matter! He gamed the new big stick anyway and it helped lead him to victory.

At the spry age of 45, the NBC announcing team marveled at Rose’s length off the tee this week as he averaged 312 yards a pop, good for 18th in the field. No drive was bigger than his tee shot right over the corner of the water on the first playoff hole. Rose’s ball barely stayed dry just 100 yards from the hole, 74 yards closer than J.J. Spaun.

Thompson said Rose picked up 4 mph of ball speed during testing, so it’s no wonder his tee shots had a booming youthfulness to them. The driver also had a slightly more left start line and removed a right miss from his driving game.

Perhaps every club in Rose’s bag has a unique story, from the TaylorMade R7 Quad Mini Driver he added earlier this spring to his six-year-old M6 5-wood (he also has a 3- and 7-wood of the same model).

He’s also made numerous changes throughout this season, including playing a driver with lead tape wrapped on the shaft under the grip. Still, one of Rose’s more unique setups is his split set of Titleist 620 CBs and Miura MC-502 blades.

Rose has at times used the full set of Miura 502s, but has settled into the split with the slightly more forgiving Titleist CBs for his long irons. He picks up the first official win for Miura irons on the PGA Tour since 2021.

He also keeps an interesting run of four PGA Tour winners using a variant of the Vokey K-Grind. After the past two winners used the unqiue K*-Grind on their lob wedges, Rose was playing a WedgeWorks .06K-Grind 60-degree wedge, which is the the grind from which the K* originated from. At the Open Championship last month, Scottie Scheffler used the same 60.06K low bounce K-Grind as Rose.

The win was also the fourth in a row for a Scotty Cameron putter on the PGA Tour after Ryan Gerard won the opposite field at the Barracuda Championship.

Two weeks ago, I was on the range at the Memorial late Monday afternoon as Adam Scott was going through a practice session.

There were maybe half a dozen others around the range at Muirfield Village that afternoon as the first day was wrapping up, but those who stayed got to witness one of the best swings in golf over the last quarter-century.

And as Scott got toward the top end of his bag, he started showing his inner gear nerd. He was seemingly gawking as he pulled headcovers off his woods and plastic wrap off new clubs, and he was giddy to show them off to his caddie and other members of his entourage. It was like a little boy showing you his latest race car or toy truck.

He pulled the plastic off a brand-new Titleist T250U driving iron and took a swing.

“Wow!” he exclaimed. He remarked how he expected a low driving shot and instead hit a powerful moonball over 100 feet in the air.

Scott’s endless pursuit of gear perfection

For us equipment junkies, Scott represents the pinnacle of gear nerdom. Ever since Scott became an equipment free agent in 2022, his bag has been a rotating treasure trove of goodies from not one, but two custom, built-for-him sets of irons, to helping lead the barrage of mini drivers, 9-woods and broomstick putters on the PGA Tour, it’s been fun to watch.

So it should come as no surprise that as Scott enters the final round of this week’s U.S. Open within one of the lead and in search of his second major title, 12 years after his first, a pretty major gear tweak preceded his fine play.

Scott drew some eyebrow raises last month when, after three years out of the bag, he re-inserted his custom Titleist 681.AS Prototype irons into the bag in Philadelphia. Those clubs were built to be copies of the 680 blades Scott used when he first came out on Tour in the early 2000s, with some subtle tweaks to Scott’s preferences.

The hidden change this week

However, this week, Scott is back to his other custom set, the Miura AS-1 blades he helped design with the legendary Japanese forging house in 2023, which he had been using intermittently for the better part of the last two years.

Irons

But Scott made a key change to the irons. Since switching to the AS-1s for a period last spring and summer, Scott’s shaft of choice has been the Project X LZ 6.5, switching from the Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100. It was a shaft he used before, winning the 2016 Honda Classic with a Tour-only prototype version.

“[The Project X LZ is] a different profile and slightly different weight,” Scott told GOLF last summer after the change. “What they encourage or promote in the swing is a little different. If my tendency is to go to the right, and if the shaft is promoting more right, then you’re in a bit of a fight. You’re going right. After a while you start fighting that, and it can throw your swing off a little bit. So it’s kind of balancing it all out.”

But this week, in reinserting the AS-1s (with a Miura TC-202 4-iron), Scott hard-stepped the shafts, which means he uses the 5-iron shaft in his 4-iron, the 6-iron shaft in the 5-iron, and so on. This makes the clubs play slightly firmer.

There are probably a couple of reasons why Scott could have decided to hard-step the shafts, but three main ones. He either wanted to stabilize the face of the iron with the stouter profile, lower ball flight and spin, or he was simply looking for a stiffer feel.

More gear changes

In addition to adding the TC-202 for his 4-iron, Scott also replaced his 9-wood with the new Titleist T250U he first tried at the Memorial. He’s one of the few players using a driving iron this week in place of a high-lofted fairway wood.

Gear

In his prime, Scott was one of the premier ball strikers on the PGA Tour, leading the category of strokes gained: approach in 2010 and 2016. But this season, after a resurgent end to 2024 which saw him finish 4th at the Tour Championship, he’s losing strokes on approach and hasn’t had a top-10 all season.

He’s been worlds better at Oakmont this week, gaining more than 5.5 strokes on the field on approach and ranking sixth in the category. That goes well with his driving, where he’s also picking up more than 5.5 shots and ranks second.

But with some diabolical pins set on Oakmont’s sloping greens for the final round Sunday, it could be those iron changes that lead Scott to the U.S. Open title.

The golf industry has lost a club-making legend.

Katsuhiro Miura, the Japanese founder of Miura Golf and fabled craftsman of hand-forged irons and wedges, died Wednesday. He was 82.

Miura began making clubs when he was 16 and, in 1977, founded an iron company that would garner a mythical status among gear heads: Miura Manufacturing Co.

Miura eventually brought into the business his sons, Shinei and Yoshitaka; more recently Miura’s grandson, Kokuse, joined the family trade. Shinei, Yoshitaka and Kokuse have preserved the attention to quality and detail that Katsuhiro imbued in his company.

“Katsuhiro Miura’s hands shaped some of the highest quality irons the world has known,” 8AM Golf chairman Howard Milstein, who partnered with Miura in 2017, said in a statement. “A humble yet driven artist devoted to his craft, he treated his work and all around him with honor, warmth and integrity. Those qualities show through in each hand-forged iron he created. He will be greatly missed, and we are humbled and honored to work closely with the Miura family in fostering his legacy.”

Since partnering with 8AM Golf, which also owns GOLF.com, Miura has released the popular TC-201 irons; Forged Series wedges; the modern IC-602 irons; and the recently announced TC-202 line.

“I bought my first set of Miura irons in high school, and I’m proud to say they remain the finest forged irons in the world,” said Hoyt McGarity, the 8AM Golf and Miura Golf CEO. “Katsuhiro Miura was an artist, a craftsman and a perfectionist. He will be missed and his leadership and vision will remain embedded in our company, in our culture, and in every club we make.”

The last iron Katsuhiro himself designed was the KM-700, released in 2022, which was dubbed his “crowning achievement.” The irons feature a red “Hanko” emblem on the back of the head, which was known as Katsihiro’s personal stamp of approval.

“The pathway to creating a legacy is loving what you do,” Miura Golf COO Bill Holowaty said. “Miura-san never sought the spotlight — his passion was the quiet, relentless pursuit of perfection. For over 30 years, he was a guiding presence in my life, both personally and professionally. What mattered most to him was not recognition but knowing that the legacy he built was in the trusted hands of his sons, Yoshitaka and Shinei, and now his grandson, Kokuse. We remain deeply honored to be the guardians of his brand and his life’s work.”

Just taking a quick look at Julian Williams’ Instagram, it’s not hard to tell what he does for a living.

Williams’ Pajamas Golf is gradually becoming one of the most well-known names for custom-stamped wedges and irons, with intricate designs ranging from flowers, to dragons, even recreating landscapes on the back of a wedge.

But Williams only began stamping golf clubs about six or seven years ago when a friend was telling him how he just got custom fit for clubs, but wanted to stylize his wedges further.

“I was forging knives at the time and working with hammers and things, and he just kind of approached me and was like, ‘Could you do this stamp work?'” he recalled to GOLF’s Fully Equipped co-host Kris McCormack on this week’s episode. “And I was like, ‘I don’t know.’”

Williams went to a hardware store and purchased some $10 stamps and a cheap hammer and got to work. Pretty soon, he found out he was pretty good at it, just doing work for his friends.

So eventually, he started promoting his work on social media as simply a way to fund his golf. But quickly, he found out his newfound business could get much bigger than that.

“In like a six-month window, I went from thinking, you know, a little bit of something to like fund my golf game,” Williams said. “And now all of a sudden, bringing in money, and now I don’t have time to play golf.

“And that’s a fine line that you walk and you know, played that for a while, not really understanding where I wanted it to go other than I was really enjoying the golf community and like, you know, finally starting to like meet others that do this kind of thing. Like being in this world is, I don’t know, more fun than anything.”
