After Nelly Korda won last week’s Seri Pak Championship, she celebrated in proper West Coast fashion.

“A nice In-N-Out burger and Animal Fries,” she said with a smile. It wasn’t a particularly glamorous celebration — the burger stop came as she and fellow pro Olivia Cowan were splitting the six-hour drive to Gilbert, Ariz., for this week’s Ford Championship — but it did the trick.

“Yeah, it was nice,” she said from Arizona, reflecting at a pre-tournament press conference.

Scottie Scheffler knows about celebrating with cheeseburgers. We don’t have confirmation on his Players Championship celebration two weeks ago, but in a 2022 interview with GOLF, Scheffler explained that when he wins, he celebrates at Burger House, a fast-food chain in Dallas — plus he served cheeseburger sliders, “Scottie-style,” at his Masters Champions dinner. (And when he misses the cut he gets Burger House, too, as a pick-me-up.)

But it’s not just beef that binds the two. Korda’s latest win got her back to No. 1. Scheffler’s latest win ensured he’ll stay at No. 1 for a while. And this week they’re chasing an intriguing bit of golf history.

For Korda, this week marks her return to World No. 1 and a 38th career week in that position. It was also her second victory in as many starts; she’d won the LPGA Drive On Championship in Bradenton in January. When she teed it up on Thursday she began the chase for the first three-tournament win streak of her career.

Scheffler’s victory at the Players Championship only cemented his status as World No. 1; his lead over World No. 2 Rory McIlroy (4.35 average OWGR points, if you care) is about the same as McIlroy’s lead over World No. 22 Tom Kim. But like Korda it was his second victory in as many starts after his Arnold Palmer Invitational victory a week before. So, like Korda, he teed it up Thursday in pursuit of a first career three-peat.

Three consecutive wins don’t happen often on either tour. The last LPGA pro to pull off the feat was Ariya Jutanugarn in 2016 when she won the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic, the Kingsmill Championship and the LPGA Volvik Championship. (Those were, improbably, the first three wins of her career.) On the PGA Tour the last man to pull it off was Dustin Johnson, who in 2017 won Genesis, WGC-Mexico and the WGC-Match Play in consecutive starts as part of his reign as World No. 1.

Three consecutive wins also isn’t a record. On the men’s side, Byron Nelson won a preposterous 11 times in a row in 1945. Tiger Woods won five times in a row (in 2007-8) and six times in a row (in 1999-2000) and seven times in a row (in 2006-7). On the women’s side Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-5) have each won five starts in a row. But from what I can tell it’s never happened like this, where World No. 1s on both the men’s and women’s tours would pick up three straight in the same week. That sort of parallel greatness is worth appreciating.

Especially because another thing the two have in common — along with world-class ball-striking — is that they’re relatively nonplussed by anything like this.

“I think my goal is to stay very present, take it — as boring as it sounds — one shot at a time and go from there,” Korda said. “I have a good, solid team around me, which I’m so grateful for. And just kind of stay in my own bubble.”

“Yeah, I don’t really think much about that kind of stuff,” Scheffler offered in his own pre-tournament press conference at the Houston Open. What does he want from this week? “I think just more of the same. I want to approach this week with a good attitude, hit good shots.”

You don’t have to look or listen hard to see the similarities. There’s what they wear (Nike) what they play (TaylorMade) how they work (hard) how they win (often) and how they talk about it (humbly).

You can find some common ground in their roads to the top, too.

Both played in U.S. Opens as amateurs; Korda made the cut at the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open as a 14-year-old, while Scheffler qualified in 2016 and 2017 as a college athlete; he was low am in 2017.

Korda skipped college and turned pro, leapfrogging her career past that of Scheffler, who’s two years older. She played the Symetra Tour for just a season before graduating to the LPGA for the 2017 campaign. After graduating from Texas, Scheffler played a season on the Korn Ferry Tour before graduating to the PGA Tour for the 2020 season. Each had early success, but similar breakout years sent them to the top: In 2021 Korda won four times on the LPGA Tour, including her first major at the KPMG Women’s PGA (plus Olympic gold). And in 2022 Scheffler won four times on the PGA Tour, including his first major at the Masters.

Korda’s latest win was the 10th of her LPGA career; Scheffler now has eight. They still own one major each. In an era where each tour is always looking for its next dominant star, they’re each happy to throw their hat in the ring. Just don’t ask ’em to praise their own accomplishments; they’re similarly unimpressed with their efforts up to this point.

“I don’t think I ever think of that actually,” Korda said this week when asked if she’s considered her chances at the Hall of Fame. “I just think of everything in my present time and just take it one week at a time. If I get there, then great, but that’s not something that I think that I put on my goal sheet. I think small goals then eventually lead to your bigger goals.”

“We’re playing at Riv this year, and I hit my tee ball and this guy yells out, like, ‘Congrats on being No. 1, Scottie … 11 more years to go,'” Scheffler said at the Players, laughing. The fan’s reference was the the OWGR No. 1 record set by Tiger Woods. “Eleven more years to go,” Scheffler repeated for emphasis.

Winning any golf tournament is an unlikely feat for an individual, so it’s not likely both No. 1s will hoist their respective trophies on Sunday. But it feels likely they’ll be in the conversation.

Korda took it easy early in the week, she said, hoping to keep her energy levels up for the tournament. She entered as the tournament favorite with 9-to-1 odds to win and opened with a round of six-under 66 that left her just three shots off the lead.

Scheffler arrived in Houston with preposterously low odds of +275 and that number cut in half after he opened with five-under 65, just one shot off the lead.

After his round, a reporter asked Scheffler if he now expects to win. He dismissed the question.

“No,” he said. “I start every tournament the same way, I try and stay patient, I try not to look too far ahead, I try to do my best. Simple as that, really just one shot at a time. I like to control things I can control and that’s being committed to the shot and trying to execute.

“On Thursday I’m definitely not thinking about Sunday.”

I guess that means no cheeseburger plans yet, either.

No, Ewing is not the first female commit to LIV Golf, but she did make five birdies in a row on the back nine Sunday, like Smith did at this summer’s Open Championship.

And, like Smith, those five birdies were enough to catapult Ewing past the field as she won the Queen City Championship by one over Xiyu Lin at 22 under.

Ewing slept on the 54-hole lead for just the second time in her career and looked to be treading water early in the day, playing the first 11 holes in just one-under and allowing Lin to tie her. But the birdie barrage on 12 though 16 was enough to pull out ahead and hang on for her third career LPGA win.

“It was just kind of early on just kind of hang in. I was dealing with some nerves.,” Ewing said. “[I’m] just really excited. Really happy and pleased with how I played. To get the win means a lot.”

Ewing parred the first eight holes of the day as she struggled to turn greens in regulation into birdie opportunities. But after getting a birdie on the card at the 9th, she settled in for a five-under 31 coming home.

“I was seeing lines really well all day, but my speed just wasn’t quite there the first few holes,” she said. “I finally saw putts go in, and then I hit it really well for those holes that I made five in a row.”

The 29-year-old can credit her putting over the last several holes to a change she made with her putting just a few weeks ago at the CP Women’s Open: shortening her back stroke.

“In Canada I was really close to putting some stuff together, but it was still kind of a little finicky,” Ewing said. “But this week, like you said, I saw putts go in and once I saw them go in, I had that confidence.”

It’s been more than a year since golf fans have seen Paula Creamer in action on the LPGA Tour, but the 36-year-old made her return to competition at this week’s Dana Open in Toledo, Ohio.

Creamer, one of the LPGA’s biggest stars since making her pro debut in 2005, made only one cut in seven tournaments last year before taking time off for maternity leave in July. She welcomed her daughter, Hilton, in January, joining a number of other new moms on the LPGA Tour.

For Creamer, returning to Ohio and the site of her 2008 victory to start her comeback just felt right.

“I love coming to Toledo, so this is a great spot and return for me to start my comeback after maternity,” she said. “I’ve had such great memories here. I’m kind of all over the place with my scores and how I finished, but I love coming to Toledo. I also knew that was going to be a comfortable place to start. I know the golf course so well. So that kind of played into the fact, too. Mentally and physically, my body, I knew I was ready now.”

With a new baby comes a renewed sense of motivation for Creamer. She said that her practice sessions have become shorter and more efficient by necessity, and having someone to play for other than herself has provided a new sense of focus.

“I just feel very in control of my golf game, very motivated,” she said. “It’s a different mindset than I think what I’ve had in the past, and I truly believe that is also because of Hilton. Just you feel stronger I think as a mom. I definitely want to play well for her, not only for myself.”

With 10 wins on her resume — including a major championship, the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open — Creamer has already had what many would consider a highly-successful and fulfilling career. But she says she isn’t satisfied yet.

“I’m back to try and get some better golf in, and the day that I want to step away is my decision, not because of golf or any of that,” she said. “It would be because of my insides, what I feel out here.

“It would be very easy to step away from the game right now and be content with my career, but I definitely want to do a lot more.”

Welcome back to the Monday Finish, where there are some things money can’t buy — like these milkshake takes. Let’s get to it!

FIRST OFF THE TEE

Something you might have missed: Speaking truth to milkshake power.

Every year the mythical milkshakes at Muirfield Village seem to grow in stature. Best milkshakes in golf. Best milkshakes in the world. What could they possibly put in them?!

To hear some pros talk about it, the main reason they tee it up at the Memorial each year is to pick up a buckeye shake post-round every day. Maybe two. Now, Memorial is among my favorite events I’ve ever covered and I’ve also been lucky enough to caddie in it, too. So I can confirm that the milkshake obsession isn’t overstated; pros and caddies and families absolutely house ’em all week long.

But this year, for the first time, there seemed to be a few pros set on pushing back against the best-shakes-in-the-world narrative.

“I guess I don’t want to get in trouble here, but like — the milkshakes are good. I’ve had milkshakes that are just as good elsewhere,” said Rory McIlroy.

Folks, I have been to the inner sanctum. I have visited the Captain’s Grill and I have cracked the code. And I am happy to share with you that the secret to Muirfield Village’s milkshakes is…the fact that, like any self-respecting milkshake, these are made with ice cream and candy.

Seriously, let’s get past the mythmaking here. Yes, they use delicious ice cream. Yes, they seem to have the ratios on point. But the truth of the matter is that the Memorial milkshakes are delicious because all milkshakes are delicious. Big Milkshake has established this as the week where it’s socially acceptable to consume them in large quantities in the name of tradition. We all fall in line, one 1200-calorie beverage at a time.

I’m certainly not milkshake-shaming here. I believe that between Memorial Day and Labor Day people should consume ice cream at least once a day; that’s the natural order of things. But I’d like us to be honest about this particular tradition and just admit that it isn’t Muirfield Village that holds the secret — it’s us. The secret is within.

Human beings just really love milkshakes.

WINNER’S CIRCLE

Who won the week?

Minjee Lee, superstar.

This was the week that Minjee Lee officially arrived. Sure, she had established herself as one of the best golfers in the world. She’d gotten as high as No. 2 in the world in 2019. She’d notched significant victories as recently as her second-to-last start, when she won the Founders Cup. She’d even won her first major championship at last year’s Evian. But there’s no matching the U.S. Women’s Open. The massive purse. The massive stage. The massive scrutiny. All seen in ridiculous HD (shoutout USGA and shoutout Peacock, who each seem to have mastered streaming).

On Saturday night, Lee — who held a three-shot lead — was asked about her plan for Sunday.

“I’m just going to try and make as many birdies as I can,” she said.

Good plan. Good execution. Lee made four birdies against four bogeys on Sunday in the spotlight. She looked distinctly cool while doing so, taking the wording on her Win At All Costs apparel very literally. Her terrific swing got its due; she’s arguably the best irons player on the LPGA and got the chance to prove it (though her red-hot putter really made the difference). While the post-game analysis seemed to focus on the fact that Lee’s final round was far from perfect, that ignored the fact that just two golfers in the entire field posted better final-round scores than her even-par 70. That’s good cookin’.

Billy Horschel, sneaky winner

Your new world No. 11! Like Minjee Lee, Billy Horschel shot 13 under to win by four strokes. Like Lee, he closed it out on Sunday with a commanding even-par final round. Unlike Lee, his included a 50-foot bomb for eagle to slam the door at No. 15 on Sunday. Now? Horschel’s resume includes a WGC, a Playoffs win, a FedEx Cup win and, after Sunday, an Invitational win too. He’s one Players Championship short of holding all the PGA Tour cards. He’s No. 8 in the U.S. team’s Presidents Cup standings.

Horschel’s approach sounded different than Lee’s.

“I knew starting off with a five-shot lead, I know if I lose it — I wasn’t going to say I’m going to choke. I’m very aware of what people say, whether it’s on social media or whether it’s in media, they’re going to question what I did.”

In other words, Horschel was trying not to screw it up. He succeeded.

“I didn’t have to do anything to do anything special out there,” he said. “I’ve got a five-shot lead. I played great the last two days. I’ve just got to go out there and continue to execute golf shots and try not to do anything special, try not to do anything stupid that would allow guys to sort of come back into the fold.”

ALMOST-WINNER’S CIRCLE

Moral victories all around.

Mina Harigae’s seven-figure check

That’s a million bucks for second place — a first in women’s golf history. Hell of a consolation prize.

Mito Pereira’s albatross

Pereira, your near-winner at the PGA Championship, made a deuce on the par-5 seventh hole on Sunday. More importantly he finished T13, cementing the fact that Southern Hills doesn’t seem to haunt him and that he’s quietly one of the most consistent golfers on the planet, with 12 top-30 finishes in his last 15 starts.

U.S. Open trenders

Some pros who might have been on your Brookline radar showed they’re in fine form on a challenging golf course, including sniper Patrick Cantlay (T3), major specialist Will Zalatoris (T5) and Hard Golf Expert Max Homa, whose T5 has him to a career best of 23rd in the world. Jon Rahm (T10) also seems to be doing just fine, thank you very much.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING

LIV is actually happening, huh? Here’s what we know.

The players

Dustin Johnson has officially arrived on property, signaling the beginning of the first LIV event outside of London. In other words: Yeah, we’re actually doing this.

DJ’s first practice swing Monday @CenturionClub #LIVGolf pic.twitter.com/U1voduyeZ3
— Mike McAllister (@thegolfeditor) June 6, 2022

If you read Johnson’s statement (released through his agent) plus Kevin Na‘s resignation from the PGA Tour you really get the sense that these guys are prepared to all-out leave the Tour. They’re speaking about their time there in the past tense. Based off the cash values being thrown around, maybe this shouldn’t come as any sort of surprise. Speaking of which…

The money

LIV CEO Greg Norman talks a big-time game, but he also has big-time financial backing, which makes some of the reported numbers — like $125 million for Johnson — believable. That’s particularly true in the context of the $2 billion investment Norman says he has secured for the coming LIV years. We’ll find out more about these numbers as time goes on, but one interesting nugget buried in this excellent Washington Post story on Norman has to do with their pursuit of Tiger Woods:

“Norman says Woods turned down a deal that was ‘mind-blowingly enormous; we’re talking about high nine digits.'”

What exactly does “high nine digits” mean? I’ll let you parse that one out, but it sounds like a lot of money and it’s interesting and telling that Team Tiger turned it down.

The announcers

It would be dishonest to suggest that LIV lacks any star power; despite McIlroy’s fair critiques of its field strength, the fact that a new league has scored a number of big-name pros and a handful of established executives is pretty seismic. On Monday we learned more about the broadcast team, which includes longtime Golf Channel voice Jerry Foltz, former Asian Tour pro Dom Boulet, long-drive champ and influencer Troy Mullins and headlined by Premier League (and Ted Lasso!) voice Arlo White.

The tickets

…seem to still be available. Offering free tickets straightaway would have been a compelling strategy. Trying to give them away just days before the event suggests an over-supply.

Ticket sales going well for next week’s LIV event, it would appear. pic.twitter.com/fwXkxjwnps
— Sam Harrop (@sam_golf) June 4, 2022

The Phil

Last week, we at the Monday Finish confirmed that Phil Mickelson had been practicing with coach and caddie (that’s his brother Tim) in the sort of way that one would only when preparing for an event. And until he had committed officially to the LIV field, we were reluctant to speculate as to his intentions. But in real time, just after I initially pressed “publish” on this story, Lefty went live with a news drop of his own: He’s headed to Centurion for the first event of the LIV Series.

pic.twitter.com/riT2ot0yvk
— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) June 6, 2022

Mickelson’s path to the first LIV event has been fraught, to say the least. There was his diatribe against the PGA Tour. His behind-the-scenes recruiting and deal-making. His interview with Alan Shipnuck. His disappearance from the public eye. His absence from the Masters and his PGA Championship title defense. Now that he’s in the field it feels like it was always a foregone conclusion. I’ll have more to say about this as I digest it, but I’ll offer this: I hope the first paragraph of his statement is true, for the sake of Mickelson and those around him. As to the rest of it: Money talks!

NEWS FROM SEATTLE

Monday Finish HQ

It’s peak summer in Seattle right now, at least according to the sunset. There’s a nine-holer down the street, Interbay Golf Center, which now offers 8 p.m. tee times, and there’s no doubt you’ll get in your complete round. Dream season, gang.

June in Seattle means 8 p.m. tee times are real and they are spectacular pic.twitter.com/7Nknc6usnr
— Dylan Dethier (@dylan_dethier) June 3, 2022

WHAT’S NEXT

Three things to watch this week.

1. The Curtis Cup!

Tired of all this money talk? The Curtis Cup is headed to Merion, where you can take in the glory of a top-tier golf course as the backdrop for terrific team competition.

2. The PGA Tour’s Canadian return

After cancelations two years in a row, the RBC Canadian Open returns to Ontario with a strong field in tow. Can McIlroy defend his 2019 title three years later? Who else is getting hot before Brookline?

She arrived at Pinehurst No. 2’s iconic 18th green with a two-shot lead and one hand on the U.S. Women’s Open trophy. When her final putt dropped, she raised her hands in the air with tears welling in her eyes.

At long last, she was a major champion.

“It’s a dream come true,” Wie West said. “I just couldn’t ask for more.”

On Friday, she once again walked along the baked-out fairways in the Carolina Sandhills. The venue was different this time — Pine Needles Resort is just five miles down Highway 2 from the better-known Pinehurst Resort — but the walk was equally emotional.

Tears welled in her eyes once again, and the galleries showered her with praise. They love their own around here, and ever since her 2014 victory, she’s been an adopted daughter.

But this will be the last time they see Wie West compete in the most iconic region in American golf.

The 32-year-old, still with just one major championship to her name, announced last week her intentions to step away from professional golf. She still plans on playing the U.S. Women’s Open next year at Pebble Beach — the final year of her 10-year exemption into the championship — but her focus will shift away from pro golf.

Wie West will always live on in the lore of the area, but she will not add to her story on the golf course.

“It was bittersweet to announce that,” Wie West said. “[But] it’s been an amazing journey, and I’m very excited for what happens next.”

While the U.S. Women’s Open trophy is slated to be awarded Sunday evening, Wie West’s week ended on Friday afternoon. With a two-round total of 147, she will miss the cut. Friday was her final walk around Pine Needles storied grounds.

“Missing the cut sucks, but overall, I had a very positive experience,” she said. “[I] had a lot of fun.”

The day started off on a high note for Wie West. She woke for her early-morning tee time and, as is her routine, played the popular game Wordle on her phone. She got the answer correctly with just two guesses.

The fortuitous beginning would not be a sign of things to come.

Although Wie West birdied her opening hole — the gettable dogleg right par 5 — she bogeyed three of her next four holes.

“Just was above the hole one too many times,” she said. “I just got off to the wrong start with my reads and just didn’t trust my eyes.”

Putting woes were a theme throughout her round. She hit 13 of 14 fairways, and 13 of 18 greens, but never quite got comfortable on the grainy Bermuda putting surfaces. She finished her round with 32 putts.

Still, when she walked to the 18th tee, there was an outside shot Wie West could make the cut. She’d need a birdie — and a little bit of help from others in the field — but the opportunity was there.

She teed her ball low on the 18th tee and pulled fairway wood from her bag. A few deep breathes later, and her ball was safely in the fairway. She retreated to the back and refilled her water bottle as fans whispered pleasantries.

We love you, Michelle!

Tee ball on 18 for @MichelleWieWest⛳️

We’re all gonna miss seeing this swing out here. pic.twitter.com/KPQqnJUnJf
— Zephyr Melton (@zephyrmelton) June 3, 2022

When all tee balls were away, she started her final stroll down the baked-out fairway.

Her approach came up well short of the back-left hole location and trickled off the false front guarding the green. Her hopes of making the cut rested on the single club that had betrayed her all day — the putter.

As she walked those final hundred yards to the green, those in the grandstands showered her with applause. Familiar faces dotted the crowd — these were the same fans that had been just down the road eight years before as Wie West became a Sandhills legend.

“I definitely teared up a little bit knowing that it would be one of my last times doing that,” Wie West said. “It was really cool. Definitely had flashbacks of Pinehurst.”

Alas, the storybook ending was not to be. Wie West’s birdie try raced past the hole, and her seven-foot par effort missed on the way back. She tapped in for her bogey, and walked off the green one final time.

“I gave it my all today,” Wie West said. “[I] gave [it] a good run.”

The 2022 U.S. Women’s Open, the biggest women’s tournament of the year, kicks off this week at Pine Needles in North Carolina. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament.

How to watch the U.S. Women’s Open

This year the best players in golf will compete for the U.S. Women’s Open crown at another classic American golf course. Designed by legendary architect Donald Ross, Pine Needles has previously hosted three Women’s Opens in 1996, 2001 and 2007.

One of the primary stories heading into the second major of the year is the return of American star Nelly Korda. Korda has been sidelined since March while recovering from a blood clot which forced her to miss the first major of the year, the Chevron Championship. Korda has never won the U.S. Women’s Open, though she captured her first major victory at last year’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

She’ll face a stout field featuring the player who took over the No. 1 ranking from Korda, Jin Young Ko, world No. 3 Lydia Ko and rising star Jennifer Kupcho, who won her first major at the Chevron in March. Michelle Wie West will also be in the field in what she has said will be her last LPGA start for the foreseeable future.

And there’s the money. Earlier this year, the USGA announced the U.S. Women’s Open purse would nearly double to $10 million in 2022, by far the largest purse in LPGA history, thanks to new presenting sponsor ProMedica. The winner will take a home a whopping $1.8 million.

Fortunately for golf fans, the biggest event of the year has the most extensive live coverage as well. NBC and USA will provide the TV coverage, and Peacock will be the streaming home for the U.S. Women’s Open, with some exclusive coverage during the first two rounds.

One of the final questions I asked Nelly and Jessica Korda during our warm-up interview was the one I’d been most curious to hear the answer to. What’s your favorite part of professional golf — your day-to-day job?

The two sisters were warming up while I lobbed questions from the side, eventually accompanied by their coach Jamie Mulligan. (The full video is below.) Jessica answered the question first.

“For me, other than obviously winning and the normal stuff that everybody would say, is meeting all the kids that come out that are inspired to come back or pick up the game of golf. I think just seeing the twinkle in their eye every time they come out and the interaction between us and them, I think that’s one of my favorite things,” she said.

It was a terrific answer and fitting, too, given Jessica’s personality.

As for Nelly? Her answer was different in a particularly interesting way.

“I mean, [Jessica’s answer] is one of the reasons,” she said. “But for me it’s the moments you’re coming down the stretch and you’re in contention and you feel the rush through your entire body. It’s those moments that I love and the intensity, too. Afterwards you feel really sick because you’re like, oh my God, I just went through a million emotions in the past four hours, but it’s what I love. I strive to be in that position as many times as possible and it’s what I work for.”

If you’ve watched her in contention down the stretch, it’s clear Nelly is locked in — but it’s almost impossible to tell what she’s thinking. So I found it fascinating that those inscrutable moments are her very favorite. But Nelly thought for a moment and then interjected with an important sidenote.

“I have to add, I’m caught between the lows and highs,” she said. “Because I appreciate the lows so much because I enjoy grinding on something. So it may feel really bad to lose in a playoff but it’s also extra motivation that I don’t enjoy — but I maybe feed off it.”

Coaches talk all the time about wanting their players to fall in love with the process of getting better, rather than focusing merely on results. They also work with their players on staying present down the stretch and enjoying the feeling of being in the mix. Nelly Korda? She already loves both. That, coupled with a tremendous golf swing, seems like it could have something to do with her ascent to No. 1 in the world.
