Golf handicaps are an essential aspect of the game. But there’s a lot to learn about them, and at times they can get complicated.

Whether you are a beginner golfer who is trying to get their first handicap, or an experienced player hoping to freshen up on some of the lingo and details, we can help.

Here’s everything you need to know about golf handicaps.

What is a handicap in golf?

Let’s start with the basics. Handicaps exist to measure a golfer’s ability. While golfers usually use the simplified “handicap” term, the official term is “Handicap Index.”

Generally speaking, a Handicap Index measures your ability in relation to a scratch golfer. For example, a golfer with a Handicap Index of 15.0 will generally shoot 15 strokes higher than a scratch golfer on a course of standard difficulty.

While important for tracking your progress and ability, handicaps are also essential for fair play. Handicaps allow players of different abilities to play competitively against each other. However, when it comes time to play against others, you’ll use your Playing Handicap instead of your Handicap Index.

Handicaps in match play

While a Handicap Index travels with you from course to course, a Playing Handicap takes into account the course and tees you are playing, as well as the format. In match play, golfers use their Playing Handicaps to determine how many shots each player will receive compared to their opponents.

For example, if a player with a Playing Handicap of 15 faces a player with a Playing Handicap of 5, the first player will receive 10 strokes over the course of the round. More accurately, that 15-handicap will receive a one-stroke advantage over his opponent on the 10 most difficult holes on the course. On those 10 holes, the 15-handicap gets to deduct one stroke from his score to determine

How do you figure out your Handicap Index?

A golfer can get a Handicap Index with as few as 54 holes played, made up of 9- and/or 18-hole scores. Once 20 scores are posted, only your eight best Score Differentials among those 20 are used to determine your Handicap Index. It’s also important to note that your Handicap Index is not meant to predict what you will shoot in a given round, or even your average score.

It’s also important to note that your Handicap Index is not meant to predict what you will shoot in a given round, or even your average score.

Instead, the USGA states that a player should shoot their Handicap Index 20-25% of the time.

Additionally, given the nature of how a Handicap Index is calculated, a golfer should not expect one round to dramatically change their Handicap Index. While it often won’t change much from one score, keep in mind there are safeguards built into the calculation to account for exceptional scores or extreme upward movement in a Handicap Index

Where to get a Handicap Index

While Playing Handicaps are determined before a round, players don’t calculate their Handicap Index. Instead, they enter their scores into a score posting product, such as the GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network) app. The best place to get your handicap is directly from the USGA. All you need to do is enter your state, zip code and contact information and pay the annual fee set by your local Allied Golf Association.

Once you set up your handicap, you’ll receive a Handicap ID (e.g., GHIN identification number) that you can use to post your scores at golf courses, country clubs and elsewhere. To make life easier, you can use the GHIN mobile app to post scores.

What is a plus handicap?

When talking handicaps, you might hear people refer to “plus” handicaps. Not many golfers are in this category (according to the USGA, 0.75% of female golfers and just shy of 2% of male players have a plus Handicap Index).

But players who consistently break par, such as PGA Tour pros, usually have a plus handicap. The golfer with a plus Handicap Index performs better than the scratch golfer and is typically giving several shots when playing in a match using handicap strokes.

If you’re one of the more than 3.2 million golfers in this country who keep a handicap, you know how simple the process is: You tally up your shots, post your score, and the World Handicap System (WHS) tracks everything for you. (Don’t have a handicap? You can get one here).

You can do this for almost any round you play almost anywhere in the world, whether it’s 9 or 18 holes, or some number of holes in between.

You can even do it on par-3 and executive layouts, which are increasingly popular these days.

All of this has been made possible by updates to the WHS that went into effect at the start of this year. Under the revisions, the system not only has a better way of handling shorter rounds (when you don’t get in all 18). It also has a new way of handling shorter courses; the length requirement for inclusion in the WHS has been significantly reduced, with courses as short as 750 yards and 1,500 yards for 18 holes brought into the fold. The upshot of these changes is that the WHS is more accurate than ever, and more reflective of how the game is played today.

This is good news for golfers. You should be happy. Scott Hovde is, even though it means more work for him. Hovde is the director of course rating and handicap research for the USGA, which means he is in charge of — you guessed it — rating courses, a term that often sparks confusion.

“When we say ‘rating,’ a lot of people assume that we’re talking about quality,” Hovde says. “We’re not. We’re talking about difficulty.”

Quality is subjective (course rankings are a matter of opinion). Difficulty isn’t. Difficulty can be measured. The tool for doing so is the Course Rating System, which assigns two numbers, a Course Rating and a Slope Rating, both of which get listed on the scorecard.

What do they mean?

Plainly put, the course rating tells you how difficult a course is for a scratch player, while the slope rating measures the relative difficulty of that same course (compared to a scratch golfer) for a non-scratch player.

Arriving at these numbers involves a fair amount of math (not Einstein-level math, but more than a lot of us have done since high school) and long hours of careful observation. Hence the extra work that Hovde’s up against these days.

Because a course must be rated before it can be part of the WHS, one of Hovde’s pressing tasks is to have every short course in the country rated (to date, roughly 300, or about half, of them have them have been rated; the rest should be completed by the end of next year). He isn’t doing this alone. He’s been joined in the effort by some 1,200 course raters at local golf associations around the country. For months now, these experts have been following rigorous procedure, inspecting every nook and cranny of the courses they visit, measuring distances to hazards, the size and shape of greens, the width of landing areas, and on.

Hundreds of variables are taken into account on every hole, from the firmness of the turf to the fierceness of the prevailing wind, with obstacles divided into categories (bunkers, trees, water, rough, etc.) and assigned a degree of difficulty on a scale of zero to 10. Raters don’t just look at the severity of an obstacle (like, say, the depth or steepness of a bunker) but also at where it sits in relation to the intended target for both scratch and bogey golfers.

It is, in short, the same way that championship courses get rated, on a smaller scale. And the more you learn about it, the clearer it becomes.

Don’t take our word for it, though. Listen to Hovde.

Last month, we followed him and a team of experts as they rated the 3s, a par-3 course in Greenville, S.C, and we lobbed a lot of questions along way. The result is the video (above) that explains the course rating process.

Raise your hand if this has happened to you. A narrow window opens in your schedule, so you sneak out to play 9 holes.

You quite like it. You’re not alone.

As golf has boomed in recent years, with participation swelling in this country and beyond, 9-hole rounds have grown in popularity, too.

They’re fun. They’re fast. They’re great for beginners.

There’s just one drawback: In many countries, the United States included, a single 9-hole score can’t be counted toward your handicap index. (Don’t have a handicap yet? You can register for one here.) Under the current system, you have to wait until you play another nine, and then combine those two scores into an 18-hole total. In the interlude between those 9-hole outings — maybe it’s a few days, maybe it’s a month, or more — you may feel that your index is not as up-to-date a snapshot of your play as it could be. You would not be wrong.

Something similar applies if you play a par-3 course or an executive course, which are all the rage these days as well. There are thousands of these shorter layouts around the world, providing golfers with a Goldilocks experience, a sweet spot, in particular, for beginners, families and anyone pressed for time. Good, clean fun, on a smaller footprint.

Again, though, there’s a catch. Because many of these shorter courses have not been assigned a Course Rating or Slope Rating, the scores you post on them can’t be counted toward your handicap, either.

Double bummer.

And yet … all of that is about to change.

On Wednesday, the USGA and the R&A announced the first quadrennial update to the World Handicap System (WHS), which was established in January 2020 as a way to unify millions of golfers around the globe through a standard measure of playing ability.

Under the changes, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2024, the length requirements for Course Rating in the WHS will be significantly reduced, with courses as short as 750 yards for 9 holes and 1,500 yards for 18 holes brought into the fold. If you play one of those newly rated courses, you’ll be able to post the score toward your handicap.

At the same time, the updated system will have an improved method for handling holes not played. If you play only 9 holes (or 10 to 17 holes, for that matter), the system will generate an 18-hole score on the spot. No waiting. That score will be applied toward your handicap index the next day.

“When we look at trends and pore over data, and we see things like the popularity of short courses and the number of 9-hole rounds that are being played, you can bet we’re going to do our best to be responsive,” says Steve Edmondson, the USGA’s managing director of handicapping and course rating. “The goal is to be as accurate as possible, and to meet golfers where they are.”

Where golfers are today is not where they were a generation back. Or even where they were just before the pandemic. Since the birth of the WHS, in 2020, more than 100 million rounds have been posted each year, and the governing bodies have been taking stock of them. Among the revelations: While 9-hole rounds have grown increasingly common for golfers of all stripes, they’re especially popular for newbies to the game. Over the past year, 9-hole rounds accounted for more than 45 percent of scores posted by female beginner golfers, and 21 percent of scores posted by male beginner golfers.

The updated WHS will make it easier for them — and many others — to obtain and maintain a handicap. Let’s say you play 9 holes. Rather than make you wait until you play another 9 on another day, and maybe even on another course (factors that can introduce all kinds of variables), the system will produce an 18-hole tally that combines your score for the holes you completed with your “expected score” on the rest — your expected score being what a player of your ability would be expected to shoot on a course of standard difficulty. In this calculation, more weight will be placed on the holes you played than on the holes you didn’t complete.

While playing 10 to 17 holes is less common than playing 9 (it mostly tends to happen on account of bad weather, darkness or a match ending early), the updated WHS will have a better way of handling that, too. For starters, you won’t have to play 13 holes; under the current system, if you don’t make it through 13, your scores on holes 10, 11 and 12 don’t count. What’s more, instead of using net par to calculate an 18-hole score, as the system currently does, the updated WHS will add the player’s Score Differential from holes played to the player’s expected Score Differential for holes not played.

In other words, where the current system is “course dependent,” relying on a player’s Course Handicap and where strokes are received to calculate a score for holes not played, the new system removes the course from consideration. The thinking behind this makes good sense: Because you didn’t play those holes, the course difficulty should have no impact.

We’re starting to get into the weeds here, but the upshot across the board is this: greater accuracy, equity and consistency.

Though the updates take effect on Jan. 1, any handicap adjustments triggered by them will not show up until the middle of the month. The governing bodies have the holidays in mind, and they want to make sure that they’re fully staffed and ready with tech support to respond to any potential glitches. Come mid-January, any 9-hole rounds waiting for their mate will be paired; any short-course score recorded since the start of the new year will show up in the system around that time as well, provided that that short course has been rated

On that note: As of now, roughly a quarter of the short courses in this country have been rated. Plans call for half of them to be rated by the spring of 2024, and the rest completed by the end of the year — all with help from allied golf associations.

We’re not quite finished. The WHS updates include two other changes. One is a refinement of the methods used to make handicap adjustments based on abnormal playing conditions (long story short, the new system will be more sensitive, and thus more likely to make such adjustments). The other change will bring additional guidance to handicap committees conducting handicap reviews, with new tools to help sort through the potential headache of outlier scores and other inconsistencies.

You can read more about that and all the other WHS updates here.

Meantime, got time for a quick 9?

Don’t have a handicap yet, what are you waiting for? Register for your own Handicap Index here.

On the one hand, they abide by the same rules and use the same equipment as the rest of us (for now, at least, while a potential golf-ball rollback is still being discussed).

On the other, they are superior in every performance category. They hit the ball farther and straighter. They chip and putt with greater precision.

How much better are they than us ordinary duffers?

Unlike many sports, golf allows us to quantify the difference between pros and Joes.

The World Handicap System, as devised by the governing bodies, works just as well for the likes of Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler as it does for the chops in your weekend foursome.

Surf around on GHIN, the USGA’s handicapping management site, and you’ll find that pros make use of the system. Quite a few of them keep handicaps. The catch is that they don’t always keep them updated. Take Max Homa, for instance. He is listed on GHIN as a plus-9 index, playing out of the Plantation, a private club in the Palm Springs, Calif., area. But January was the last time he posted a score, and we know he has played a lot of golf since then.

What would Homa’s handicap index be if he kept it current? What about Rahm and Scheffler? And Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa and Cameron Smith, among other members of the game’s elite?

We wanted to know.

So, we gathered scoring data from 10 of the biggest stars in the men’s pro game (the top 9 in the Official World Golf Ranking, plus Brooks Koepka, who has been on a tear in recent majors) and asked our friends at the USGA to help us crunch the numbers. To arrive at handicaps for Rahm, Scheffler, Koepka, et al., the USGA used the same method that applies to all of us: They took the best 8 of each player’s most recent 20 rounds based on scoring differential (scoring differential being the score in relation to the difficulty of the course, as measured by the slope and course rating), and calculated the average differential.

Methodology

It should be noted that all 20 rounds were played in tournaments; the calculations did not take into account scores from any other rounds the 10 golfers might have played over the same time period, as those scores were not publicly available. Also, because Augusta National does not have a course or slope rating, scores from the 2023 Masters were not included.

Another note: The calculations were based on the course and slope rating from the championship distance of each venue, but they did not take into course setup, as specific ratings for those setups were not available either. In the case of the Mexico Open, where the tournament setup played longer than the longest-rated yardage for the course, the USGA used a procedure, known as Appendix G, that accounts for that differential.

In an ideal world, the more data the better. “We always want people to post all their scores,” says Lee Rainwater, the USGA’s director of handicapping, education and outreach. “And as a handicapping guy, I’d be especially interested to know all the scores these Tour pros are shooting, including the rounds they play with friends at their home club.”

Even so, Rainwater said, it’s unlikely that those additional scores would alter Tour pro handicaps significantly, as the scores they are shooting are already so low, “it’s hard to imagine them going much lower.”

I have a couple of friends with whom I’ve played golf regularly over the years. Unfortunately, we don’t get to peg it together often — I live in Boston and they live back in my hometown of Fort Wayne, Ind. — but whenever I’m back home, the three of us try to play as much as we can.

Like many groups of golf friends, there’s a wide range among us in terms of skill: My handicap index typically hovers in the low- to mid-single digits; my friend, Eli, has impressively dropped from a 15 to 7 in the past couple of years; and our other friend, Joe, is a 20. Naturally, because of this disparity, we always use net scoring (factoring in our handicaps) in whatever game we’re playing so the rounds are competitive.

But what would happen if we didn’t?

The seed for an idea

Not long ago my friends and I were discussing what kind of betting odds Joe would have to get to play me straight up, without any strokes, if there were any sort of stakes on the line. Underlying that question is a simpler one: What are the chances Joe would beat me?

Prompted by this thought experiment, we started thinking about the odds of each of us beating one another if handicaps weren’t factored in. How could we figure this out?

We do have a sample of outcomes from the many 18-hole rounds we’ve played together that may provide some insight: Eli’s beaten me once, and we tied one other time; Joe’s never beaten either of us. From this sample, we could say Joe has a 0% chance of beating either of us, and Eli’s chances of beating me are 1 divided by however many rounds we’ve played together. This gives us some idea of the win probabilities for each matchup, but while we’ve played a fair number of rounds together, it’s not nearly enough to really understand the chances of us beating one other.

Given my background in research and data analysis, along with my ridiculously obsessive personality, I needed to unriddle this puzzle.

Compiling the data

To assess the chances of one golfer shooting a lower score than another golfer on a given day, I would need information on each golfer’s scoring history. If I knew what kind of scores each golfer had shot in the past, I could use that data to simulate competitive rounds and determine a win probability for each golfer. If I had the scoring history of my friends and I, and ran some simulations, I could determine win probabilities for each matchup. Now, I just needed to figure out how to get the data.

Luckily, each of us has an official USGA GHIN handicap, which means we’re required to upload our scores into a database. Anybody with a GHIN profile also is able to search other golfers in the database by their names and states, as well as view their scoring data. Now we’re getting somewhere! I just needed to search the profiles of my friends and I, grab the scores and I’d have a nice dataset containing everything I’d needed to run matchup simulations.

That’s when it hit me: If I could get scoring data from my group of friends, why not get data on a much larger sample of golfers? Instead of asking “what’s the probability that my friend, Joe, could beat me in a match?,” the question became more general: “What’s the probability that a 20-handicap could beat a 5-handicap?” And not only that — with enough data, any conceivable matchup could be simulated: A scratch golfer vs. a 5-handicap; 15 vs. 10; +3 vs. 30, etc.

And so, the goal had elevated from collecting data on my friends and I to collecting a sample of scoring data large enough to run simulations for any matchup between two handicap levels. To do this, I wrote a computer program to grab data from random golfers in the GHIN system. In the end, I was able to create a sample of roughly 2 million rounds from nearly 100,000 golfers, with handicaps ranging from +7 to over 50.

Armed with that large sample of scoring data, I was able to run simulations to determine win probabilities for any handicap matchup.

So, what do the data say about matchups between my friends and me?

The findings

First up: Me (5 handicap) vs. Eli (7 handicap). Based on 10,000 simulations, I would win 67% of matches, Eli would win 32% of matches, and we would tie 1% of matches. While these predictions don’t align with our history of matches, Eli has improved drastically over the past year or so, and based on our recent scoring patterns, this prediction, in fact, is pretty accurate.

Next up: Me (5 handicap) vs. Joe (20 handicap). In our history of playing together, Joe has never beaten me, but what are Joe’s chances based on scoring data from similarly skilled players? According to simulations, this trend continues: a 5 handicap wins nearly 100% of matches against a 20 handicap.

And Joe vs. Eli? While Joe has never beaten Eli in the past, the model predicts that Joe will win 1% of matches. So you’re telling me there’s a chance!

So, there you have it: Based on scoring data from thousands of golfers across the country, I was able to determine reasonable estimates of the chances of my friends and I beating one other in gross play. And now, you can do the same — for either gross or net contests — for you and your golf buddies.

Try my simulator for yourself!

I took the data I collected and built a tool that enables users to run simulations between two golfers at various handicap levels and determine the win probabilities for each — for either gross or net matches. In addition to showing win probabilities for different scenarios, the results also display a sample of 100 simulated rounds with accompanying win margins to get a sense of possible outcomes.
