Golf can be seriously private, but GOLF’s list of Top 100 Courses You Can Play is not. This year, our expert group of course raters sat down with a simple goal: to build a list of the greatest courses you (yes, you) can tee it up at in a moment’s notice. The end result is list as varied as the courses it encompasses, from Bandon Dunes to Bethpage Black.

But why keep the memories to just one of our 100 greatest tracks? Whether it’s by way of a classic point-A-to-B-to-C road trip, a stay at an iconic resort (with or without side trips) or a stopover in the concrete jungle, knocking three or more Top 100 Courses You Can Play off your wish list is doable in one fell swing.
Courses included in our Top 100 You Can Play: Casa de Campo (Teeth of the Dog, #7; La Romana, D.R.), Cap Cana (Punta Espada, #18; Punta Cana, D.R.), Puntacana (Corales, #90; Punta Cana, D.R.)

Drive: Casa de Campo and the duo of Cap Cana/Puntacana are a little more than an hour’s drive apart. There’s no resort stay required at these properties to access the courses, but being on property does bring a discount on green fees.

Dine: Legendary local spot Tipicobonao is a family-owned restaurant near the La Romana airport, showcasing delicious Dominican cuisine rich in Taíno, European and African origins.

Diversion: If you’re on the island from October to December, it’s not just golf season but also Dominican Winter League baseball season. The Toros del Este play at Estadio Francisco Micheli Stadium, where the boisterous fans are almost as much fun to watch as the play on the diamond.

Detour: Casa de Campo’s oceanfront Teeth gets all the plaudits, but the 27-hole Dye Fore course, set on rolling terrain high above the Chavon River, offers sweeping, 360-degree views of the Caribbean and the countryside— and some thrilling shots to try to execute.

Diversion: The beaches, for goodness’ sake! And Cabo San Lucas for the nightlife (including Sammy Hagar’s iconic Cabo Wabo), and San José del Cabo to get out of the sun and enjoy cafés and art galleries.

Detour: The Nicklaus Signature course Quivira offers stunning ocean views; you’ll need to stay at a Pueblo Bonito Resort, likely PB Pacifica Golf & Spa.

GOLF recently unveiled its Top 100 Courses in the World, which included all the well-known iconic gems like Augusta National, Cypress Point, St. Andrews and, well, you get the picture. But there’s more than one way to make a list, so here’s ours! Over the next month, GOLF staffers will take their turn creating their own ranking, but not of the best courses in the world — the best courses they’ve played. Enjoy, and if you haven’t made the time to create your own list to dissect and look back on, now’s the time to get started.

My Top 10: Tim Reilly

10. Sumpwams Creek

This par-3 9-hole course holds a special place in my heart. Sumpwams opened when I was just 11-years-old in my hometown of Babylon Village on Long Island. It was the right place, at the right time, for me to learn the game. With holes ranging from 70 to 180 yards, it’s perfect to hone-in your irons and short game. At the cost of $9 for village residents and $12 for non-village residents, you can’t beat this deal.

To this day, Sumpwams remains one of my favorite courses to play.

<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="https://golf.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/course-love-reilly.jpg" class="" alt="<p>Sumpwams Creek is the perfect place to learn how to play</p>

9. Galloway National Golf Club

The best part of Atlantic City these days might be the golf course located just on the outskirts, with Galloway leading the way for me. The par-3s are what stand out most, requiring you to carry marshland while being distracted of gorgeous bay views and the Atlantic City skyline. Greens often sit dangerously atop plateaus and there’s trouble all around to really make you stop and think before every approach shot.

8. Pinehurst No. 4

Fresh off a redesign by Gil Hanse, Pinehurst No. 4 is making a move on its big brother No. 2. The course was put in the spotlight when it served as co-host of the 2019 U.S. Amateur, and I don’t expect that to be the last time championship golf is played here. There’s rolling topography throughout and the course feels like it was perfectly molded out of the land, using slopes and bunkers beautifully to offer a true test to any golfer.

7. Deepdale

Located directly off the Long Island Expressway, you wouldn’t know Deepdale is a stone’s throw from one of the busiest roads in the country once you step foot on the property. It’s a meticulous oasis away from the LIE noise. I don’t think I’ve ever played a course purer (a term tossed around far too much when it comes to describing courses) in that every inch is manicured to perfection. Deepdale is the type of picturesque green that a painter can only dream of depicting.

6. Dormie Club

Dormie keeps it simple in the best way possible. There is hardly any signage throughout the property, no paved paths to speak of, old-school bunkering and you get the kind of echo of emptiness after tee shots that make you feel all alone with the course. I’m not a course architecture expert, but I dig what Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore did here. Dormie is the type of place where you feel like you’re playing a course from a different time as you walk down the fairway and soak it all in.

5. The Creek

It’s no secret that Long Island is home to some of the best golf courses in the world. It does feel like The Creek is a secret, though, with how little recognition it gets as a top course in the area. Once known as “The Million Dollar Club” when it was conceived in the 1920s for the wealth of its members on Long Island’s gold coast, The Creek features million-dollar views of the Long Island Sound. One of my favorite features is that during high tide on the 11th hole, you can only access the green by using an old wooden footbridge that adds to the classic charm of The Creek.

4. Winged Foot (West Course)

Hit one putt at Winged Foot and you’ll earn newfound respect for what the world’s best golfers will be challenged with at the 2020 U.S. Open. They’re without a doubt the most challenging greens I’ve ever played. When your caddie tells you to “just touch it,” you better just touch it or there’s a good chance you’re hitting your ball right off the putting surface.

Winged Foot has an aura of being part of a different era and trying to stay in that era. The look and feel of the locker room and clubhouse bar are something that can only come with nearly 100 years of comradery amongst its members. Winged Foot isn’t just a golf course, it’s an experience.

3. Bethpage Black

Growing up a mere 20 minutes from Bethpage State Park made the five courses at Bethpage my home courses. “The People’s Country Club” perfectly embodies Long Island golf and Long Islanders to me. We work hard, aren’t afraid of a challenge and we’re not going to take shit from anybody. Bethpage Black makes you work hard, to say the least, and certainly doesn’t take shit from any golfer who steps foot on one of golf’s most challenging courses in the world.

The infamous “Warning” sign behind the first tee box is no gimmick. If you miss the fairways on the Black, you might be better off with a weed-whacker than a golf club. The combination of thick rough and fescue put a strong emphasis on keeping the ball straight. You can’t sacrifice distance for accuracy though or you’ll find yourself forced to lay up on par-4s. The greens might seem relatively flat, but it’s those putts that move just a few inches that I find the most difficult to read, and Bethpage features plenty of that.

Grind out a round and keep coming back for the challenge, the Long Island way.

            <parone-video-block content-key="6037105892001" feed="63-all-system-videos" stylesheet="https://golf.com/wp-content/themes/golf/assets/styles/inline-player.css" vast-override-id="two" class="video-player" keep-ads-playing-offscreen="true" docked-logo="https://golf.com/wp-content/themes/golf/assets/images/logo.png" default-res="720" hide-title="true" hide-description="true" dockable="true" autoplay="true"></parone-video-block>

2. Teeth of the Dog

What could possibly make paradise better? A golf course in paradise. The highlight of my stay at Casa de Campo was a round at Teeth of the Dog. Pete Dye’s signature design surpasses expectations with seven holes that run along the Caribbean. You’d be hard-pressed to find better views on a golf course. The course is the perfect blend of challenging yet fair, which is what I personally look for in a course. I can play there with a low handicapper or high handicapper and both would thoroughly enjoy the experience.

If there was one hole I could play for the rest of my life it would be the par-3 fifth hole. The setting is surreal as ocean waves crash against the tee box and green with nothing more than a sandy beach left in the middle to carry. It’s a tiny green to hit, especially if the ocean breeze is whipping, but you simply cannot beat this setting when the sun is starting to set.

On cold, dreary winter days in New York City, I find myself daydreaming about Teeth of the Dog.

1. The Cradle

That’s right, a par-3 course tops my list. Simply put, there’s no course I’ve ever played that I’ve wanted to go around and around with my friends more than The Cradle. To me, that’s the true sign of a great course. With undulated greens as challenging as those I played on Pinehurst No. 4, this 9-hole course is the most fun 789 yards I’ve ever played.

Groups of all ages and sizes (I played one round as a nine-some) flood to The Cradle. The course is pristine, speakers are built into the terrain to hear music on every hole and it features the coolest bar I’ve come across on a golf course yet. It’s $50 to play and for that price, you can go around as many times as you’d like. Kids under 17 even get to play for free. How’s that for an effort to grow the game?

My favorite ending to a day of golf in 2019 was hanging at the mobile bar with my dad by the Adirondack chairs smack in the middle of The Cradle with a cotton candy sunset serving as the backdrop. It’s truly a special place. Grab some buddies, a handful of clubs, a drink and play The Cradle as many times as you can.

Winter is officially upon us, and if you live in an area of the country where temperatures are dropping rapidly right about now, a few days of warm sunshine and swaying palm trees probably sound pretty appealing. And if you’re still looking for the perfect gift to give this holiday season, golf travel is one-size-fits-all, so it’s probably high time to consider booking a long weekend in the Caribbean to cure the winter blues.

Here’s how you can do it at Casa de Campo (a Top 100 Resort!) in the Dominican Republic for under $2,300.

I tried booking several itineraries for the same long weekend (three total nights) at the end of February, and here are the prices I found to Punta Cana (PUJ), which is about a 50-minute drive to the Casa de Campo resort:

From JFK (direct flights on JetBlue): $2,288.74
From ATL (direct flights on Delta): $2,840.74
From ORD (direct flights on United): $2,810.74

Remember, the prices above are for both airfare and lodging for two people, so you’ll only be spending about $1,300 per person, depending on where you’re coming from.

And if you still prefer to book your own flights separately, there’s always Kayak.

Thinking of dipping into the Caribbean? In the Dominican Republic, the golf has real bite—and so does the chow.

Golf
Casa de Campo, in La Romana, is sublime. The resort features three Pete Dye courses: The Links, Dye Fore and Teeth of the Dog (No. 48 on our list of the Top 100 Courses in the World). Punta Espada G.C. at Cap Cana is a Nicklaus stunner that some judge to be the best in the Caribbean. Obviously, it’s a must-play.

Culture
In winter, you can get a true sense of Dominican life by taking in a Caribbean League baseball game. The atmosphere is unlike anything stateside from America’s favorite pastime. If a ballgame isn’t your thing, take a walk on the pearly-white sand beaches or chase marlin in the crystal-clear Atlantic.

Eats
Fresh is the word when it comes to DR cuisine. Some of the world’s finest fruit is literally hanging at your fingertips, and you still won’t get enough of it. If you’re a fan of coconut and fish, you can’t go wrong with the popular Dominican dish Pescado con Coco. And Quipes, a Middle East–influenced fried snack, is a must-try Caribbean staple.

Tip: Best time to visit? March–May

Slow play is every golfer’s worst nightmare. No one enjoys that one member of a group who takes his or her sweet time while the others are ready to move the round along at a good pace.

But this weekend at the Latin American Amateur Championship at Casa de Campo Resort’s Teeth of the Dog in the Dominican Republic, both slow play AND fast play occurred within the same grouping.

Mexico’s Alvaro Ortiz won the Latin American Amateur Championship at 14-under to become the first Mexican-born player to play at the Masters since Victor Regalado did in 1979. But before he claimed his invite to Augusta National this April, he was caught playing too far ahead of his third round group on Saturday.

According to Golf Digest, Ortiz’s group, which was the final threesome to go out on Saturday, had been put on the clock early on during the back nine. Seeing that his two partners were falling behind, Ortiz starting playing half a hole ahead of them in order to speed up the pace of the round.

After finishing up at the 12th hole, Ortiz went ahead to the 13th tee and left behind his two partners to putt out at 12. After hitting his tee shot at 13, Ortiz started walking down the fairway before the other two had even gotten to the 13th tee. Following his approach shot, Ortiz was already waiting near the green as his two partners hit their second shots. As a result, a rules official approached Ortiz and informed him that he needed to slow down and wait for the others to catch up.

“He kind of had to come on to the green and told me to slow down a little bit,” said Ortiz, who was worried that a slow-play penalty would take him out of the lead. “I was just playing too fast.”

“It’s a difficult situation,” R&A director of rules Grant Moir said. “You know he just wants to help the group get back into position.”

Ortiz shot a final round of six-under 66 to close out the tournament and earn the victory on Sunday. Ortiz finished the back nine with an eagle and three birdies.

Along with earning an invite to Augusta National, Ortiz also receives invitations to the U.S. Amateur and the Amateur Championship. He also took home exemptions into U.S. Open sectional qualifying and Open Championship final qualifying.

All we can do now is hope we get to see Ortiz try to speed up his group at the Masters this spring.

Of all the courses Pete Dye has ever designed, he’s always listed Teeth of the Dog as his favorite. There are seven great reasons why — the seven holes that practically melt into the Caribbean Sea. The color contrasts of clear, pale blue seawater, tawny bunkers and vibrant green paspalum grass combine to soothe the soul like few places on earth.

In March 2018, the Tom Fazio – designed Corales at Puntacana Resort served as host to the first-ever PGA Tour event contested in the DR. The cliff-top creation offers spectacular sea views and scrub-dotted sand expanses and concludes in fine fashion with a trio of closing holes called the Devil’s Elbow. The par-4 18th, with its dramatic sweep around the Bay of Corales, will linger long in memory.

There are countless activities to sample at Casa De Campo Resort & Villas while enjoying life in the lap of luxury: polo classes, sport fishing and planting yourself at the beach, to name a few. The swank resort tucked along the Dominican Republic’s Southeast coast is home to the Teeth of the Dog, the renowned Pete Dye design that checks in at No. 48 in GOLF’s latest list of Top 100 Courses in the World. As you might expect, the resort typically attracts a links-minded crowd.

And so they’ve added golf lessons to their lavish lineup.

A new learning center has opened at the resort and it’s headed by Charlie Epps, the longtime coach of two-time major champ Angel Cabrera. The facility features 21 acres of green grass, two hitting bays, Trackman technology and club-fitting and repair. The ocean roaring nearby isn’t so bad, either.

The resort is offering a “Train in Paradise Package” starting at $823 per person, per night, which includes rooms, a lesson per day, a club-fitting, green fees and carts. One other unique aspect of the facility: any golfer visiting with his or her personal instructor can use the facility for lessons. And yes, traveling with your own golf coach is definitely a pro move.

So as long as you’re teeing up at one of the coolest spots on the planet, why not improve your game along the way? Not a bad option if you’ve just had your “teeth” kicked in by the big course.
