Rory McIlroy Gets 3-Iron Back From Donald Trump

March 8, 2015

Remember when Rory McIlroy decided he didn’t need his 3-iron?

Well, thanks to Donald Trump, now it’s found its way back to him. McIlroy’s approach on the eighth hole during the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championships splashed into the water Friday, and a disgusted McIlroy tossed his iron into the same lake afterward.

“I mean, look, I just let frustration get the better of me,” Rory said after his round. “It was heat of the moment, and I mean, if it had of been any other club I probably wouldn’t have. But I didn’t need a 3‑iron for the rest of the round so I thought, why not?”

A scuba diver fetched the club Saturday. While McIlroy was on the range before Sunday’s final round, Trump, Doral’s owner, returned it to him. You can hear McIlroy saying he’d return the club to Trump after the round. Trump later said he would donate it to charity or put it in the clubhouse.

“He’s a great kid, a great player,” Trump said. “Anything he does is news. It showed a human touch. He’s a fantastic person.”
