A missed putt by his playing partner cost the president of the United States some cash.
Or $3, to be exact.
According to a story by Paul Kane in The Washington Post, President Obama and his playing partner, Rep. Joe Courtney (D-Conn.), lost a $3 bet to Reps. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) and John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) at The Courses at Andrews in Maryland two weeks ago.
The Post described it as “18 holes of fun, intense competition and trash-talking, and the Democratic lawmakers came away completely thrilled.”
Obama, an avid golfer who The Post said played his 240th round of his presidency on Saturday, and Courtney took an early lead and won the match on the 15th hole, but Yarmuth and Perlmutter pressed and won on 16 and 17. On 18, it was all up to Courtney.
“On the last hole, I left it on the lip of the cup for par,” Courtney told The Post, “so the president and I had to cough up three bucks.”
The president later realized he didn’t pay his debt, but that week Yarmuth received an envelope on his desk. Inside was $3 and a note from Obama, reading: “I pay my bets.”
