Maria Verchenova Makes Ace, Fires Course-Record 62 at Olympics

August 20, 2016

Once the Olympics are over and everyone has left Rio, Maria Verchenova can lay claim to the premier round of the tournament, men’s or women’s.

The Russian golfer entered Saturday’s final round at five over par, having struggled mightily over the first three days. But it took just 18 holes to completely turn that around. Verchenova made nine birdies and dunked a hole in one at the par-3 4th hole on the final day of action at the Women’s Olympic golf event, finishing with a nine-under 62, a number no other player matched on the Gil Hanse-designed Rio Olympic course.

Despite the incredible round, Verchenova was at four under for the tournament, well out of contention for a medal.
