Covid-19 may have put any purchasing ideas you had in March on hold. Now, it’s game on, and time to reassess your equipment needs. So, we’ve compiled the “Best in Show” from ClubTest 2020 to give you a refresher. These clubs are bold and beautiful, like the game itself. In this edition, we highlight TaylorMade’s SIM driver family.

Why We Love It

Science tells us that we humans perceive more symmetrical faces as more attractive…but that’s no longer the case with driver soles—the SIM sports an asymmetric sole design that helps to ramp up aerodynamics and rpm on the downswing, when it matters most for distance.

Who doesn’t love game-improvement features with a cool-sounding name straight out of Get Smart? In fact, the “Inertia Generator” is straight-up 21st-century tech: Not only does the IG position weight in the way back of the club, it’s also, ahem, smartly angled to lessen drag on the downswing for extra yards. And it’s Rory McIlroy’s driver of choice.

All SIM family woods feature the asymmetric sole, Inertia Generator and Speed Injected Twist Face to reduce sidespin and increase ball speed, and Loft Sleeve to adjust face angle and shot trajectory. Each version’s face height is a bit different, growing taller from SIM to Max to the deepest, Max D.

Why I Play It

“I’m always looking for something that launches out of my preferred window with the optimal spin rate. If I can get those two boxes checked, it allows me to swing freely and not feel like I have to manipulate the club. That’s how I’ve felt since I started using the SIM. It does what I need it to do on command.” – Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy
