Brooks Koepka could have stayed the course and remained an equipment free agent. Four major-championship wins in a two-year span will keep anyone from making wholesale changes to their equipment setup. But even the best players in the world know when it’s time to shake things up, Koepka included.

Things changed for him in early 2021 after conducting offseason testing with Srixon’s ZX7 irons. The feel, dispersion pattern and consistency were noticeably better — to the point that Koepka needed to know if the performance was for real.

So he added a tournament to the schedule.

“That’s why he played the American Express,” said Cleveland/Srixon Tour rep Rob Waters. “He really liked the irons and wanted to put ’em to the test.”

Two weeks after breaking in the irons, Koepka found the winner’s circle in Phoenix. He was officially sold on the clubs.

The validation on the course wound up leading to a full-bag equipment deal with Cleveland/Srixon, in 2022, that includes even more gear he trusts, including a ZX5 LS MKII driver, Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore wedges and the Z-Star Diamond golf ball. It’s the same setup he used to win his fifth major title at the 2023 PGA.

To push the limits of your game, you need a ball with all the right ingredients. That’s why the entire Z-STAR Series was designed to deliver tour-level distance, control and feel, from tee to green. Starring a reformulated FastLayer DG Core and improved Spin Skin+ coating, you, too, can experience the formula trusted by Major Champions when wins are on the line.
FASTLAYER DG CORE
The trade-off is age-old: hard cores are fast, soft cores are slow. But the firmer a golf ball, the harsher it feels at impact, which can reduce your confidence when the pressure is on. That’s why our new FastLayer DG Cores are soft at the center and get firmer from the inside out. The contrasting compression helps them rebound quicker off the face for incredible distance while still providing exceptional feel.
NEW SPIN SKIN+ COATING
This micronic layer of specialized urethane increases the cover’s degree of friction for even more spin and control.
THIN, PREMIUM COVER
Every Z-STAR Series golf ball features an extra thin, thermoplastic urethane cover to provide tour-level stopping power around the greens.
SPEED DIMPLE PATTERN
With their deep dimensions, the 338 Speed Dimples on each Z-STAR Series golf ball punch through air for a penetrating launch. Once aloft, the dimples generate lift, driving the ball upward toward its peak and maximizing glide distance during descent. When conditions get tough and the winds reach high speeds, the 338 Speed Dimples’ low drag coefficient helps the ball stay on target through the moving air and maintain distance in headwinds.

Only a few weeks before his first major win at the Masters, Scottie Scheffler replaced his decade-old Nike VR Pro fairway wood with a Taylormade Stealth at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas. It marked the end of an era for a club that Scottie had in his bag since high school and also demonstrated just how far fairway wood technology has come.

After testing multiple models, Scottie went from 12.5° of loft on his Nike to 16.5° on the Stealth, showing just how much higher launch and lower spin modern fairway woods are, even compared to clubs from not that long ago.

The beginning of 2022 marked the first time in close to 20 years that Adam Scott was not an official Titleist staff player and that change brought some new clubs to the 42-year-old Australian’s bag.

The biggest switch was at the Memorial where he put in the custom set of AS signature irons from Miura.

It was fitting that these clubs went in at Jack Nicklaus’ tournament since the inspiration came after talking to the team at Miura about the special edition Nicklaus irons Miura created and how the shape and profile were appealing to his preference for more old-school 1980-90s style blades like his previous Titleist 680s.

Only a few weeks before Justin Thomas went to Southern Hills and took home his second Major Championship, he did what few golfers in his position do — he changed putters.

Justin went from a flow neck style Scotty Cameron to a “knuckle neck” on his X5. The neck style reduced toe hang and helped add a little extra stability to the putter head, along with giving it a different look at address.

The majors were big weeks for gear changes this year and at the U.S. Open, Brooks Koepka switched from his Srixon Z-Star Diamond back to his trusted Titleist ProV1X. This was big news since his switch to the Srixon coincided with the release of the Z-Star Diamond and it was unofficially referred to as the “Brooksie ball”.

According To Srixon, Brooks made them aware of the desire to change before the US Open and they discussed his continued excitement to work towards developing new products moving forward.

With the launch of the LIV Golf series, a number of big changes on the player relationship front occurred. The biggest news was that Bridgestone decided to end their relationship with Bryson DeChambeau after having him on staff since the beginning of his professional career. DeChambeau hasn’t been spotted testing any other golf balls yet, but following his changes will be an interesting one as he continues to play on the LIV Golf circuit.

Longtime PXG staffer Pat Perez also became an equipment-free agent after his signing with the league.

DeChambeau and Perez’ news followed the pausing of Callaway’s relationship with Phil Mickelson after his initial on-the-record statements about LIV Golf were made public by writer Alan Shipnuck.

Last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Tony Finau took home his second win in just as many weeks on the PGA Tour and we were on-site getting the inside scoop on gear news. Although Tony’s clubs stayed the same as the previous week, we did spy something new in one of the equipment vans that we are excited to share exclusively at GOLF.com.

Graphite Design debuted an all-new shaft called the Tour AD CQ which, from initial conversations, leads us to believe it’s a higher launching, lower spinning shaft intended to take advantage of an extremely stable butt section with a softer mid-profile.

              Ryan Barath

The only club we saw this in for testing was a fairway wood, so it’s likely that the Tour AD CQ was initially designed with fairway woods in mind — CQ-8 denotes an 80-gram shaft — but based on conversations, the new CQ will be offered in a variety of weights and flexes like all the other shafts in the full Graphite Design portfolio.

We don’t have an official release date, or specs available at this time but will update as more information becomes available.

Long-neck putters are blade- or mallet-style putters with an extra long offset plumbers neck style hosel that is attached to the head. Unlike putters that have shafts that bend directly out of the putter head in a smooth flowing fashion, true long-neck putters come out straight 90 degrees from the head and offset in one location.

There are various ways to achieve this style of putter neck, but they all offer the same benefit — the ability to use a straight (no bend) shaft directly into the hosel while still offering less toe hang. Thanks to players like Justin Thomas recently winning the PGA Championship, the long-neck style is seeing a resurgence in popularity with players on the PGA Tour after almost disappearing completely for close to a decade.

At the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, we spotted Gary Woodland using a custom long-neck Scotty Cameron, along with Matt Kuchar testing a new version of his current long-neck putter on the practice green with the team from Bettinardi golf. When talking to David Kubiak, the director of tour for Bettinardi, he mentioned that he’s been getting more requests for this style recently, especially after players saw JT’s major win in Oklahoma.

This type of putter style is not new, though. Tiger Woods used a long-neck Scotty Cameron putter at the start of his pro career to earn his first two wins, but switched soon after.

Unfortunately for regular golfers, there aren’t many ways to get your hands on a long-neck putter unless you are looking to get one custom-made from a boutique putter maker or you go through something like the PING PLD putter program or order one through Taylormade’s MYTP putter portal. Check out the latter below.

While we were on the grounds at Detroit Golf Club, in Detroit, Mich. earlier this week to take in the sights and sounds of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, we also got our fill of some local fare. Here’s our pre-tournament gear wrap-up from the event, as well as some extra equipment news taking place in Bedminster, NJ at the LIV Golf event.

LIV Golf’s new trailer

Kevin Na’s caddie Kenny Harms shared some breaking news on Instagram that LIV Golf has bought and outfitted its own tour equipment trailer to help players with any gear issues that might come up. Considering no OEM has made any commitment to service players outside of PGA Tour events using a trailer, this could be the perfect solution for a field limited to 48 players.

Former world No. 1 Luke Donald was among those that were without clubs thanks to a baggage issue overseas.

Noted gear junkie Ryan Moore was seen on the range with a plethora of clubs against his staff bag on Tuesday piecing together his clubs for this week.
It’s been a big week for irons and Henrik Norlander got in on the action by debuting a new set of PXG 0317ST blades. When speaking with the tour team at PXG, the biggest thing for this new set was getting the looks and bounce right for Henrik, and so far they have been a hit with the Swede.

Another player back from the Open Championship and looking to get reacquainted with softer conditions this week is Adam Hadwin, who was requesting a new grind with more bounce for his wedges to prevent excess digging.

It was only a couple of months ago at the Memorial when Adam Scott put a custom set of Miura irons into play in preparation for the Open Championship.

On the range this week in much softer conditions, Adam was spotted talking with Mizuno techs about the sole grind of the Mizuno Pro 221 blades compared to his Miura’s and his preference for slightly wider soled irons. During the conversation, Adam referenced a number of historic Mizuno models that he liked in the past including the MP 29s based on sole shapes, and let me just say, this guy knows what he likes and has a great memory for clubs.

Whether a new set will make it into play or not is still to be seen, but we will keep an eye out for a potential switch.

U.S. Presidents Cup Captain Davis Love III was working with the Titleist crew to get set up with new TSR metal woods, including the driver and fairway woods. Although he plays a limited schedule on tour, DLIII can still move it off the tee, and with President’s Cup hopeful Max Homa in the field, Davis is likely keeping an eye on more things than just his launch conditions this week.

If you are headed to Detroit make sure to try and schedule a Tigers game at Comerica Park. As a fan of baseball and a good stadium, my entry-level $25 ticket was worth admission to walk around and soak up the vibe.
Detroit style lives up to the hype.

As someone that has almost never met a pizza he didn’t like, I’m happy to report that Detroit-style pizza fully lived up to expectations — the light, buttery, fluffy crust with a crunch absolutely delivered. Now with just a couple of FedEx Cup regular season events left, we just need to stay tuned to the Rocket Mortgage Classic to find out who will deliver a win on Sunday!

The interesting thing about Adams newest irons, which are the first non-Titleist irons he has played in over two decades is the sole profile was something Adam had in mind specifically for his playing style and the Open Championship.

Unlike the standard Miura MB101 blade irons which have a more rounded sole, Adam’s irons have more offset and a flatter sole profile that puts the leading edge closer to the ground to keep contact more vertically aligned with the sweet spot. This small adjustment makes a big difference since shots hit lower on the face – which can happen when a club has too much bounce, makes controlling trajectory more difficult.

For the full story of how these irons came together you can check out this article here where Kevin O’Connell, Miura Golf’s vice president of sales, and Golf.com’s Jonathan Wall discuss in detail the process of building these irons exactly to Adam’s needs: How Adam Scott’s Jack Nicklaus-esque Miura irons came to life
