ORLANDO, Fla. — Hello, friends, and happy Sunday from the PNC Championship! We dealt with a little rain in the morning, but it ended up being a beautiful day here. I was very excited to see that Steve and Izzi Stricker were paired up with Tiger and Charlie Woods because I am all-in on the Stricker family. When asked about any pet peeves he had on Saturday, Stricker laughed and mentioned that his decisions get overridden by the gals in his house a lot. Just when he got ready to give an example, his wife, Nicki, and daughter Bobbi yelled out to him that it wasn’t true. They seem to have so much fun together, and I had a blast watching them all interact on the course on Sunday.

More on the Strickers later. I headed straight for the range when I arrived on site at the PNC Championship, and a lot of the family interactions got me reflecting on why I love this event so much. I think that after such a tumultuous year in golf — from lawsuits to LIV to a merger — this family event is the perfect palate cleanser to prep for Christmas. Watching the Strickers laugh on the range, Sam Woods beam as she handed her dad his putter and Will McGee tear up because he just had the best day of his life with his mom was exactly what I needed. It got me excited to return to Rhode Island for Christmas this week and make memories with my own family. Not on national television, of course. Although I do think my siblings and I could hold our own on a reality TV show.

OK, back to the fun stuff!

Justin Thomas’ step-in caddie

It may not have been the weekend Justin Thomas had hoped for at the PNC Championship, but he had the perfect finish to his round on Sunday when he holed out from the bunker.

If you look closely, you’ll notice that JT doesn’t have his caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, on his bag there! Justin Thomas’ father-in-law stepped in for a few of the final holes at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club on Sunday. How fun (and hopefully not too nerve-wracking) is that?

It’s fun to see people who kind of fell into the lives of professional golfers get to be a part of the action. I bet Jillian Thomas’ father never imagined he’d end up looping in a professional golf tournament, and I can’t imagine that JT’s grandmother ever pictured herself hanging out with Tiger Woods on a Saturday afternoon like she did this week.

Annika Sorenstam and Will McGee’s emotional interview

I named 12-year-old Will McGee the official MVP of the PNC Championship on Friday, and I would like to take a moment to double-down on that take. It’s particularly fun to watch McGee play in the event because you can tell that this doesn’t feel normal for him. He knows it’s super cool that he’s playing in this event, and he definitely doesn’t take it for granted.

Him tearing up while reflecting on the week is the cutest thing ever. My 11-year-old sister would kill me for telling you all this, but she’s not a loyal reader of this column so I’m going to anyway: She sobbed at the Taylor Swift concert because she was just so excited to be there. And what a cool moment for Sorenstam! I hope they play in this event together until the end of time.

The Woods family

Sam Woods was on the bag for her dad again Sunday. Her job was a little more difficult than it was a day earlier — they took carts due to the weather on Saturday but were on foot for the final round. Tiger and Sam were the only Woods family members in Sunday red. Charlie did his own thing and went with navy pants and a maroon pullover.

I have no idea why Charlie Woods went with that color scheme, but I have my suspicions.

The Woodses went with chicken tenders and fries for lunch again. I’m very curious to learn how one ends up with a job that includes delivering chicken tenders and fries to a 15-time major champion on the golf course. Do you apply for that position on LinkedIn? If so, I’m interested.

I particularly enjoyed hearing Tiger reflect on his favorite parts of the week.

The Stricker family

OK, friends, bear with me here. The below image is definitely not the best photograph I’ve ever taken, but it’s definitely one of my favorites.

Over on the left we’ve got Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods walking down the first fairway at the PNC Championship. And on the right we’ve got Sam Woods and Bobbi Stricker chatting as they caddie for their dads. How awesome is that? It’s like if the average “bring your kid to work day” was about 500 times cooler.

Izzi Stricker called it “nerve-wracking” to tee it up with Tiger on Sunday, but she hid it extremely well. No offense to Steve Stricker or the Woods boys, but Izzi Stricker was definitely the most fun golfer to watch in the group. She smoked her driver, stuck approach shots and drained a handful of putts.

Despite wearing horrible walking shoes, I found myself getting a little sad as I made my way to the 18th tee box with Team Woods and Team Stricker. I look forward to this event all year and it always goes by too fast. I had so much fun hanging out with other media members this week, catching up with caddies and watching my favorite players tee it up. It’s an event that always reminds me how lucky I am to be working in golf.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Hello, friends, and happy Saturday! I write to you all from a very rainy day here at the PNC Championship. Tee times were moved up to account for the weather this morning, and it varied from a light drizzle to a heavy pour throughout Team Woods’ and Team Thomas’ round. That didn’t keep the fans from coming out, and it definitely didn’t stop me from having an awesome day on the course. Shout out to my new rain jacket for keeping me dry out there.

Sam Woods the caddie!

I got to the course nice and early this morning to watch Tiger Woods warm up before his tee time. Side note: It’s a whole lot easier to wake up at 5 a.m. when you’re going to watch a 15-time major champion in person.

I was very pleasantly surprised when I walked over to the putting green, and Rob McNamara joked that he had been fired. “New caddie today!” he said. That’s right, folks — Sam Woods, Tiger’s daughter, made her debut on the bag today and it was so, so much fun to watch. With son Charlie Woods as Tiger’s partner, I can’t imagine how much fun it was for him to be out there with both of his kids today.

The last time we saw Sam was when she gave an incredible introduction for her dad when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2022.

Sam caught up with Justin Thomas on the range, who was asking her all about school and exams. Thomas reminisced on how waiting to get his high-school grades was “the worst.” Relatable!

Due to the rain, everyone in the field took carts. You might think that this would make Sam’s job easier, but I firmly disagree.

Sure, she may not have had to lug Tiger’s bag around for 18 holes, but she had to do something far more intimidating: drive a cart through a packed golf course on a wet, slippery day. As someone who gets nervous pulling into a parking spot when people are watching, I can’t imagine the pressure she felt weaving in and out of the ropes and on narrow pathways. Sam did a great job navigating the cart and pulling clubs for Tiger. I watched her crack a smile after Charlie reacted to a poor shot in the way only a big sister could. She looked down grinning when fans screamed, “We love you, Sam!” next to a tee box.

After their round, I asked Tiger how Sam was on the bag, and he gave a glowing review.

“Sam was fantastic,” he said. “This is the first time she’s ever done this, so it couldn’t have been any more special for all of us. For me to have both my kids inside the ropes like this and participating and playing and being part of the game of golf like this, it couldn’t have been more special for me, and I know that we do this a lot at home, needle each other and have a great time. But it was more special to do it in a tournament like this.”

We’ve also seen some videos of Tiger looping for Charlie over the past few months, so I was curious how the 82-time PGA Tour winner is as a looper. Charlie’s review was positive, but not as positive as the one Tiger gave Sam.

“For Dad as a caddie, his reads are hook-bias,” he said, “and I don’t hook as much as he does. So all of my putts, I miss right. So I have to account for that.”

I think my favorite Sam Woods moment of the day came when she couldn’t help but chuckle when Tiger missed a putt. She and Charlie might be the only people on earth who can get away with that. Overall, I hope she had an awesome day hanging with her dad at work. Being out on the course definitely beats the times I played with the copy machine at my dad’s office.

Tiger’s golf game might be anything but normal, but it was extremely refreshing to watch him be normal with his kids. They ate chicken fingers and fries, made jokes and made the most of their day together despite the weather. It turns out that watching a really famous guy do really normal stuff with his kids is pretty entertaining.

The Thomas family stars

The trash talk was kept to a minimum on the course today, which I was definitely surprised by. I think the horrible weather made the energy in the Woods/Thomas group a little low today, but two members of the Thomas family were able to change that.

First up we have JT’s dog, Franklin. He came out to hang on the 16th green, and everyone in the group flocked toward him.

Next up we have JT’s grandma, who carted along for the whole round — and even got to meet Tiger!

Look how happy she was to meet him! I imagine that’s exactly how I looked when I met Tiger on Friday morning.

Lee Trevino’s advice for Charlie

It’s not every day an 84-year-old and a high school freshman get to yuck it up on the golf course, but Lee Trevino and Charlie Woods did just that on Friday morning at the PNC Championship. And he had some advice for Charlie.

“You got to leave the cell phone at home. … And you know what, don’t go out on the driving range and just start hitting balls just to be hitting balls. Work on something. … You gotta hit a shot. It doesn’t have to be a good shot.”

So basically, practice with intention. Great advice! After seeing Charlie’s recoil today, that’s what I plan to work on next time I hit the range.

Hello, friends, and welcome to my favorite week of the year: the PNC Championship.

This event is the perfect way to end the golfing year. It’s a feel-good family tournament that gives me (okay, and the rest of the golfing world) something to get excited for before Christmas, and it’s definitely one of the more laid-back tournaments from a coverage perspective. And it helps that the pros have their guards down, which makes for a lot of fun moments — including a few that we’ll get to shortly. I’ll be recapping each day here at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, so allow me to take you back to my arrival on Wednesday.

I flew from Boston to Orlando early on Wednesday morning, picked up my rental car and then (after Wawa lured me in for a quick lunch) headed straight for the course, where I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that our media center had been relocated to the J.W. Marriott. We were in a tent last year, which is a pretty typical tournament setup, but now I’m writing to you all from the finest media setup (non-Augusta National division) on the east coast. We’ve got fancy food, fancy coffee, and if you’re Jon Rahm, you’ll be happy to know we’ve got fancy bathrooms too.

Wednesday and Thursday at the PNC Championship kind of feel like the first few days of school. Only a handful of the pros have arrived for practice rounds, so there’s a good amount of downtime before the real work begins. Everyone’s in a great mood and happy to be on site, so there’s a lot of catching up that happens. The Woods boys didn’t arrive on site until this morning (Friday), and their absence was definitely felt.

My favorite Tiger friendship

You know who was out on the course early in the week, though? Annika Sorenstam’s son, Will McGee. He headed to the course right after school on Tuesday to get some practice in and ended up making a hole-in-one!

McGee’s week started off perfectly and it’s still going pretty well. He and Tiger warmed up together on the chipping green while the 15-time major champion queried McGee about his junior golf schedule. When Sorenstam came over to check on her son, she asked Tiger if McGee was listening to him. Tiger smiled and said, “Other way around. I’m listening to him!”

Woods and McGee continued their chat on the way to the practice bunker, like old pals. The Rogers Report is officially giving McGee the inside track for MVP of this event. Not only is he pals with the 82-time PGA Tour winner, he’s probably the most stylish guy on site, decked out in Greyson gear and sporting some very cool Air Jordan 11 CMFT Lows. During a backup on the 10th tee, McGee told Tiger he was nervous on the first tee today. Tiger told him that he should be nervous because it means he cares. As someone who isn’t particularly cool, who isn’t a good player and whose parent isn’t a professional golfer, I have just about nothing in common with Sorenstam’s son. But it’s still a whole lot of fun to watch him hang out with the Woods guys.

I saw Tiger greet a lot of people today — players and their families, caddies, media members and more — and I don’t think he lights up with any of them as much as he does when he sees Sorenstam. He exclaimed “Ani!” as he went in for a hug and asked her how she’s been.

Tiger imitates Steve Stricker

During his warm-ups, Tiger kind of holds office hours at the PNC Championship. He does his thing, and every few minutes someone will go up to him to say hi. He gave Steve Stricker a big hug while asking about his family. Two seconds later, Woods was mimicking Stricker’s swing in front of him and (I think?) purposely duffed a chip.

Also, I’d be remiss not to mention just how cool the Strickers are. Their whole family is involved this week. Steve and his daughter, Izzi, are teeing it up together while his other daughter, Bobbi, and his wife, Nikki are on caddie duty. Unfortunately, my siblings and I are not talented enough to have this sort of family outing together; what we do best as a group is stare at our individual phone screens.

The Woods guys did most of their warm-ups separately today. Charlie’s got his high school teammate and pal, Luke Wise, on his bag this week, and Rob McNamara is looping for Tiger again. Tiger put the staff bag away for the week, which is great news for McNamara. Luckily the rain held off during the Pro-Am, because McNamara said he made the game-time decision to leave the rain gear in the car today.

I wonder what percent normal this feels for Wise this week. He probably spends a good amount of time with the Woods boys, but doing so on national television has to feel kind of crazy. For me, the weirdest thing about walking around with Tiger’s team is how normal it all feels. Rob McNamara is super kind, Charlie is extremely polite and everybody else is as welcoming as they come.

My absolute favorite thing about the PNC Championship is how we get to see Tiger’s personality a little bit more than usual. He had chicken tenders and fries for lunch all week at the 2022 PNC, and today was no different.

The 10th tee offers some of the best people-watching at the PNC thanks to the fact that there’s always a group or two waiting on the tee box. As a player that might be annoying, but as an onlooker, it’s perfect. Tiger chucked a piece of a chicken tender at Charlie while they waited, and they caught up with Sorenstam and Mcgee during that time as well.

I know they say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, so it shouldn’t be too surprising for you all to learn that Charlie was making the same type of jokes his dad makes on the course today.

Unlike last year, Tiger walked the whole round today, which allowed for us all to get a lot closer to him as he moved throughout the course. Close enough that I overheard him tell Charlie that he was going to give the people on television something to talk about before pulling out his driver to hit one off the deck.

Upon hearing that, Charlie said, “you’ve gotta be kidding me.” That’s a classic teenage response to a parent doing something embarrassing. I used to say the same thing when my parents forced me to take one more photo on Easter Sunday, cheered a little too loud at my high school basketball games or made one too many jokes in front of my friends. Charlie, I promise that people loved watching your dad hit it off the deck. I guess no parent is immune to getting that response from their high schooler.

Hello friends, and happy Tiger Woods Comeback Week to all who observe. The Hero World Challenge holds a special place in my heart because it gives us a fun photo of Tiger and Dr. Pawan Munjal every year.

I’m excited to share the 2023 version of the photo with you all here:

These photos are so awkward that they’re incredible. The annual holiday season gift that keeps on giving.

I spent Thanksgiving in Rhode Island, where my family teed it up in a Turkey Shootout (okay, the boys in my family played the full round, my sisters and I went home due to the cold after four holes) on Friday. The unexpected MVP of the day was my 11-year-old sister Madeleine, who hit a handful of stellar shots with my clubs before taking her talents back to our heated living room.

Her swing may be unconventional, but it definitely gets the job done. I won’t be commenting on the state of my game at this time.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Thanksgiving week

It wouldn’t be a proper Rogers Report without a brief update on how our favorite pros spent the holiday week. Let’s take a look, shall we?

We’ll start out with Jessica Korda, who has a lot to celebrate these days. Alison Lee, Megan Khang, Lydia Ko and of course her sister, Nelly, joined Korda for a baby shower. Allison Stokke Fowler, Maya Schauffele, Jillian Thomas and Nikki Guidish were also in attendance.

I have a feeling that baby has already overheard a lot of golf talk and will be ready to hold a club in no time.

Next up we have Dustin Johnson, who remains as unbothered as ever.

May we all spend our days off as relaxed at DJ is on that boat. And finally we have the Koepkas, who hosted on Thanksgiving.

As someone who ate their meal at the makeshift kids table, I’m very jealous of that set up.

Max Homa chirps Tiger

It has been very fun to live vicariously through Max Homa as his friendship with Tiger Woods has come to life. Not too long ago he was just a tweeter (like me!) and an incredible golfer (not like me…) with a dream. From posting about Woods to winning his tournament to teeing it up alongside him at the Old Course in 2022, I thought Homa had just about done it all in terms of their friendship. I was mistaken.

Homa had not yet had the opportunity to dunk (in a friendly manner, of course) on the 82-time PGA Tour winner. When asked to name as many of Tiger’s wins as he could, Homa led off with “not Riviera.”

Talk about being quick on your feet! A friendship doesn’t truly begin until you can poke a little fun. Congrats to Homa for reaching that crucial step with his friend Tiger tWoods.

Min Woo Lee’s clapback

Just for a moment, let’s put aside the fact that Club Pro Guy is a parody account. I say this only because I don’t think Min Woo Lee was aware of that when he tweeted the following after wining the Australian PGA Championship on Sunday.

Side note: if you’re not following Lee on Instagram, you’re missing out. Of all the pros on social media, he’s the one who utilizes it the most. He even has a broadcast channel on Instagram where he chats to his followers.

Anyway, back to the clapback at hand. After Lee’s win, there was some discourse surrounding his swing online, and Club Pro Guy made a joke about Lee’s move. Lee either a) doesn’t realize Club Pro Guy’s entire account consist of sarcasm or b) realized it and didn’t care, and came up with the perfect response to the critic.

Mic Drop. The perfect reply! I’ve been advised not to interact with my critics on the internet, but if I had a massive trophy in my hands, you can bet I’d be all up in those replies.

Los Angeles Angels’ slugger Mike Trout can absolutely rake when he’s between the lines on a baseball field. But during a recent Topgolf visit, he reminded us once again that he’s also not afraid to flex his muscle with a golf club is in hands.

The three-time MLB MVP posted a video of himself swinging a driver with the same force he typically exhibits when blasting a 450-foot dinger. The end result: a bomb that carried 284 yards with a 161-foot apex and appeared to exit the far end of the range. “That was a laser beam,” one of his playing mates says from off camera.

Mike Trout’s ball speed surpassed Tiger Woods’

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Trout mashing a golf ball, as he’s made a habit of posting long drives on social media over the years.

But here’s a new wrinkle: Trout’s latest viral blast clocked in at a ball speed that was faster than Tiger Woods’ during the most recent The Match. Topgolf’s tech recorded Trout’s ball speed at 184 miles per hour, while Tiger’s tee shots last month were in the 175-mph range.

Don’t get us wrong: Tiger’s speed is more than impressive — especially for a guy who’s coming off major surgeries — but it’s hard not to be wowed by a MLB player besting the 15-time major champ.

Trout is a beast, whether he’s knocking baseballs into another zip code, or golf balls.
