TaylorMade is at the top of the list when it comes down to limited- or special-edition clubs and their new Shadowfall family continues to build on that notion. Let’s take a look at what makes the Shadowfall family unique and what pieces you may be able to snag for your own bag.

Drivers and Fairways

All three of TaylorMade’s Qi4D driver models are available in the new Shadowfall collection. Whether you’re an LS, CORE, or Max user, all the benefits of the fast, forgiving, and fittable lineup are now cloaked in a high-gloss, blacked-out look. If you were disappointed by the matte crown of the stock lineup, you’ll be thrilled by the high-gloss black finish of the new Shadowfall options. Tommy and Rory traded clubs for a match. Here's what we learned

It’s an idea I’ve loved for a long time. Two-time Masters champion Rory McIlroy and World No. 5 Tommy Fleetwood playing a three-hole match is always going to be great content, but swapping bags? Now we’re cooking. That’s what TaylorMade did in a video released just a couple of days ago.

I think it’s fair to say both players have had their bags covered often this year, but what I find most compelling about the video is watching world-class players adapt to other equipment and essentially making it work. I think back to my days at Callaway when I would see Jon Rahm grab some random club off a fitting cart between filming sessions. He’d hit one, get a feel for it and then bang ball after ball — making the club do what he needed like it was his gamer. It sounds simple in practice but was on a completely different level.

Here are three interesting nuggets from Rory vs. Tommy TaylorMade video:

1. Your clubs are indeed a reflection of YOU: Swing weights, lie angles, offset, etc. It’s all so personal and in a few spots in the video you hear both players call out what seems so foreign to them. For example, Fleetwood plays a softer shaft than Rory (PX 6.5 at 125 grams vs. PX 7.0 at 130 grams) and has very flat lie angles in his irons. So what does Rory do? He starts aiming left to combat the ball going too far to the right. It also happens with the opening tee shots. Rory plays a low lofted, open faced, back weighted Qi4D core model vs. Tommy’s lofted up, upright, front weighted Qi4D LS driver. These drivers not only fly differently but the look is quite a contrast as well. Even the faces look different with Rory’s light gray face vs. Tommy’s darker one. At their core the drivers they play (and the shafts) are MILES apart.

Right on cue, Rory hit Tommy’s driver left and Tommy hit Rory’s driver right. Clubs, like humans, have a DNA, and pretty strict bias. The best players in the world have clubs that are tuned in to their swing DNA. Wanna know the fun thing? You can do that too!

2. Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure: Watching Tommy coax Rory into hitting the 9-wood on every shot was a real treat. If there was ever a player who wouldn’t be caught dead with a 9-wood, it’s Rory McIlroy. For good reason though, it makes no sense for a player with his speed and delivery. But for Tommy, who is an “on top of it” golfer who tends to play with north-to-south launch at his whim, it’s a no brainer. (Almost cheating, if I’m being honest.) It goes back to my tools analogy — some players can use tools that others won’t yet they still achieve the same result. I’ve heard TaylorMade’s Adrain Rietveld call the 9-wood a 230-yard pitching wedge. I need that in my life.

3. Every player will react to the wrong club (some better than others): This is the best part of this video and it’s a testament to 1) How dialed in each player is with their own bag — thanks to Adrian Rietveld — and, 2) How unbelievably talented both players are to react and adapt to golf clubs that have no business being in their possession and still making it work. It’s even with the Spider putters they use. To a normal person they may seem basically the same, but they are polar opposites of each other in terms of how they feel, look and perform. Rory’s is longer, heavier and with less loft. Tommy’s is light, has unique alignment aids and has more loft. I don’t advise swapping sticks with your Saturday morning group, but there is something to be said for learning how to manufacture shots under any circumstance. This video is kind of that idea on steroids. I wish it was an 18-hole match, although I also think the PGA Tour team event in New Orleans could really shake it up with this idea.

I’d love to see more of this in the future, and it’s always interesting to learn from how players hit shots with a tool that wasn’t meant for them. It’s just another display of talent at its highest level. As an idea, at least from where I sit, there is so much fun to be had with this platform. For example, I’d love to see players like Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler switch clubs. From a fitting perspective they are on different planets but watching them “make it work” would be quite the case study.

Can you imagine if Jack and Arnie would’ve swapped sticks at some point? Or Snead and Hogan? Gear-junky heaven is what I call that.

In this installment, GOLF Associate Equipment Editor Jack Hirsh takes you inside Michael Thorbjornsen’s bag and equipment setup for 2026.

Michael Thorbjorsen is a classic example of a talented player evolving into a complete one once on the PGA Tour, and his equipment shows it.

The former Stanford standout earned his way onto the PGA Tour by finishing No. 1 in the PGA Tour U Ranking in 2024 and has shown steady improvement throughout his career, earning two runners-up finishes so far and a spot in the final pairing on Sunday at the Players Championship last month.

But the PGA Tour and NCAA are completely different animals for the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur champion.

Previously, he could rely on simply being the longest guy in any given event and just overpowering golf courses. That doesn’t cut it on the PGA Tour.

Together with TaylorMade Tour rep Adrian Rietveld and the rest of his team, they’ve worked to give Thorbjorsen new weapons and a more complete game.

“He turned up on the scene as an extremely powerful golfer who didn’t need to be more than one-dimensional because of how talented he is,” Rietveld said. “You have to evolve on the PGA Tour. You have to adapt. And then there’s certain things where the equipment can certainly play its part.”

Breaking down every club in Michael Thorbjornsen’s bag

Ball

Thorbjorsen is now playing his third different golf ball in just over a year. During his rookie season last year, he and Rietveld decided to make a similar change to Rory McIlroy and move from the TP5x to the softer TP5.

Like McIlroy, Thorbjorsen is one of the longest players on the PGA Tour, so the extra distance of the firmer TP5x isn’t necessarily what he needed. Raw distance can get you a lot of places in the amateur game, but now he needed to prioritize control, and that’s what the spinnier TP5 did for him.

“The main reason for that is to start to learn how to hit these off-speed shots,” Rietveld said. “I thought that’s actually a better golf ball for him through the bag. And he should be able to incorporate more of these off-speed shots and should be able to incorporate a wedge game that’s required for a top-10 player in the world.”

While Thorbjorsen is a high-speed player, with an average clubhead speed of nearly 120 mph, Rietveld said he’s not an overly high-spin player, making the switch much easier.

He changed again when the new 2026 TP5 came out on Tour late last season after a testing session revealed the ball had a much more consistent flight.

“The wind didn’t move it as much, and even 5 yards of difference there is huge,” Rietveld said.

Thorbjornsen’s best weapon is his driver. As a rookie, he ranked 7th in SG: Off the Tee, 6th in distance (318 yards) and 48th in accuracy.

He was previously in the Qi35 LS last season and has stayed in the model family with the Qi4D LS this year. One of the reasons he continues to use the most compact model in TaylorMade’s lineup, despite being a draw player, is the increased spin retention from the tighter roll radius on the Qi4D.

“He hits a draw, and I think that tautness of the spin tolerance that we’re getting out of the face now gives him the confidence to turn it over where the ball’s not going to drop,” Rietveld said. “When you get into that 2000 and less, that can cause what I think is a big miss.”

The TAS weights on his driver are fairly neutral, with just 3g forward and 8g back, but that gets his typical spin window in the 2350-2400 rpm range, which is where his best dispersion is.

The mini driver has become a core part of Thorbjorsen’s identity, and it’s a big reason his accuracy stats are so much better than those of many other high-ball-speed players.

The club gets a lot of use when there are holes that are too short for his regular driver and this week at Harbour Town is going to be one of those weeks.

“Being a 180-plus ball speed guy, the mini driver is kind of a safety for that,” Rietveld said. “When he doesn’t feel comfortable with driver, it becomes almost like a 300-yard club to get him in play and keep him in the tournament.”

For a lot of players, the mini driver is like a safety valve for when a shot can’t be hit as far, but the can still swing just as freely as they do with a driver. That’s the case for Thorbjornsen.

This season, Thorbjorsen added a 7-wood for most courses to better bridge the gap between his irons and mini driver. He still uses a P770 3-iron for drier courses or windier days, but the 7-wood is getting the bulk of the reps this year.

Like many players, his 7-wood is set lower on the FCT sleeve to not only bring down flight a little, but also open the face angle to guard against a left miss.

“Anytime you’re taking loft off in woods, you’re trying to help encourage better shot dispersion. For him, it just complements everything around it,” Rietveld said. “That 7-wood is quite versatile. It retains his spin beautifully for a high-ball hitter and allows him to be more aggressive in that regard.”

Irons are perhaps where Thorbjorsen has made some of the biggest changes since turning professional.

He’s stayed in the TaylorMade P7MC head despite many players on the PGA Tour moving on to the newer, slightly larger and more forgiving P7CBs, but he’s completely changed his loft spec since he started working with Rietveld about a year ago.

“I think he was two degrees strong, one and a half degrees strong when I got hold of the irons. And once I had finished with them, I really had put them all back to traditional blade lofts,” Rietveld said. “That was probably the most significant change, because you’re not just tweaking the irons. You’re moving them a lot. He’s going to see a new window, a new spin profile.”

It wasn’t that someone had made a mistake with Thorbjorsen’s irons before. Rietveld said it’s not all that uncommon for standout college players to make pretty significant spec changes once they arrive on the PGA Tour.

They now have access to stay on top of their specs every week that they didn’t have while in college when they only saw their rep a few times a year, if that.

Adding loft back onto the irons also improved Thorbjorsen’s turf interaction because of the added bounce.

You’ll also notice Throbjorsen uses irons 1 1/4″ longer than standard length to account for his height. His irons are fairly standard lie angles, getting a bit more upright in the mid- and short irons.

The P770 3-iron he has and still uses for tighter tracks (like potentially this week) is not only built with a steel shaft, but it’s built with a Dynamic Gold X7 steel shaft that’s heavier and stiffer than the X100s in the rest of his set.

“The 3-iron has just been a club that he’s grown to love,” Rietveld said. “We have tried to put it in an X100 and it’s not been as good. It must be something to do with these bigger heads in the long irons.”

Thorbjorsen and Rietveld worked on a 2-iron to potentially use this week and it is once again shafted up with an X7.

With the golf ball change, Thorbjorsen moved the lofts on his wedges a degree to a degree and a half weaker to take advantage of the extra spin he could now generate.

What has changed is the grind of his MG5 lob wedge, moving from the TW-grind to the SC, and it’s coincided with a dramatic improvement in his play around the greens. In 2025, Thorbjorsen was 159th in SG: Around the green. This season, he’s all the way up to 34th, a difference of nearly half a stroke.

“We’ve been testing 60-degree wedges since Phoenix,” Rietveld said. “Just kind of making multiple options and him taking them on to the golf course, a real kind of like trial-and-error situation. Every week you’ve got different sand and different run-offs and just trying to figure out what variety of shots he’s comfortable hitting and which grind helps him the most.”

Uniquely, Thorbjorsen plays the softer and lighter KBS Tour V in his wedges simply because he prefers the feel. His clubs are longer than standard which also makes them heavier, so there isn’t much of a concern with them being too light.

One thing that Thorbjorsen hasn’t changed much in his setup is his Spider Tour putter. During his college days, he was in the more compact Spider Tour X but has been in the larger profile Spider Tour since 2024.

Meet the man behind Rory McIlroy's Masters-winning Spider putter

As Rory McIlroy put the finishing touches on his second straight Masters win, 144 miles away, James Holley watched with the TV blaring from a TaylorMade Tour truck.

He was already on-site for this week’s RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island, but he couldn’t miss this moment — especially since he played a part in it.

“It’s always fun to see a putter you have a little bit a part of win on Sunday,” says Holley, TaylorMade’s putter rep and the man responsible for maintaining McIlroy’s Spider putter, the same one he used to win a green jacket last year as well. “And especially in a major it’s awesome.”

Holley will be a busy man on the putting green at Harbour Town as well, but it won’t faze him. That’s basically been the case every week this season on the PGA Tour.

In a lot of ways, it’s fitting that a Spider putter won the Masters yet again. The putter family has won all but two Masters since 2020 and won three of the four majors last season. It was the winningest putter on the PGA Tour last year with 15 victories.

But the hype around the putter has hit a fever pitch to begin 2026 as pros seek to copy what is working for others. With McIlroy’s win at Augusta, that marks six wins by five different players already this season, including five of the first six events of the year.

McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, who finished second at the Masters, account for the majority of those victories last season, but the residual effects of their success are evident in other players.

New pros are adding the putter seemingly every week, including names like Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa, who won with a flow neck Spider Tour X after years of waffling between putters, mostly blade models.

“It’s definitely the hot putter and a lot of players you wouldn’t necessarily think want to try to tinker and switch into the putter have come up and we’ve built putters for them,” Holley said during an interview in March, just after Jacob Bridgeman won the Genesis Invitational with a Spider Tour. “It’s a good spot to be in.”

Holley sits firmly in the middle of all that success as TaylorMade’s putter rep, a job he’s had since the summer of 2024. In that time, Spider usage on the PGA Tour has exploded, in part led by Scheffler’s switch earlier that spring.

But just about everyone who has switched since, like Tommy Fleetwood, who got “Spidered” last spring, Holley has been the one helping them through the fitting and building process on the practice green.

Holley had aspirations of being the guy fitted for putters, not necessarily the one doing the fitting.

He was a standout junior golfer and played at San Diego State from 2013 to 2015, the same time Xander Schauffele was an Aztec. In the spring of his junior season, he captured his only collegiate victory at the WIU/Carlton Oaks Invitational.

While he was in school, he also did product testing for TaylorMade, whose headquarters are in nearby Carlsbad. That introduced him to TaylorMade Tour reps Ryan Ressa, who took care of Holley’s club needs in college, and Bucky Coe, TaylorMade’s putter rep at the time.

Holley played the mini tours and worked as an instructor on the side, but he found out that life wasn’t for him.

“I have a family, so it got kind of old,” Holley says. ”You know, making a lot of money one month and then no money the next month.”

It was around this time when Coe transitioned out of his role as TaylorMade’s Tour putter rep and posted the job on his Instagram. A lifelong putter nerd, Holley pounced on the opportunity.

“I’ve always kind of been a putter-tinker and would always jump on like the Quintic here and test a bunch of different stuff,” Holley says. “That’s probably what makes me a good tour rep but didn’t make me a good tour pro. The amount of putter knowledge I have is probably not super great for, you know, playing golf.”

He got the job on a Monday in August 2024 and flew to Memphis that evening for the first round of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. The first person he was introduced to was Tommy Fleetwood, who ended up being one of his first major success stories.

At the end of 2024, Fleetwood was beginning his search for a new putter to replace his longtime Odyssey White Hot Pro 3 blade. The first try was a TaylorMade Prototype Truss Soto blade. The Truss putter line was released in 2020 and featured a unique triangular hosel that was aimed at reducing the twisting forces of the putter on mishits while retaining a traditional look.

Fleetwood had two different versions of his Truss prototype before Holley approached him in early 2025 about switching into a Spider.

“That’s the kind of art of being the rep of trying to go up to a guy who’s maybe been struggling, and if it’s the right time to ask him if he wants to try a putter or not,” Holley says. “I had been watching him putt for the last six to nine months, an hour each day during the week.”

The key, Holley says, is never pushing a move on a player. While much of his job revolves around being ready for when a curious player walks up to his bag stationed at the putting green, the real work is biding his time to know when he’s going to approach a player.

The results for Fleetwood speak for themselves. He was 84th on the PGA Tour in SG: Putting entering the RBC Heritage and was 15th at the end of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The putter change sparked the best summer of Fleetwood’s career, culminating in his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship, another victory at the DP World India Championship and a career-high World Ranking (3rd).

At his breakthrough at East Lake, he led the field in putting, picking up more than eight shots over the week on the greens.

Fleetwood liked the milled True Path alignment aid on the Spider ZT, so Holley drew Sharpie lines on the top of the Spider Tour and Fleetwood liked it so much he stuck with that version until the Texas Open this season. (Holley redrew those lines by hand every few weeks, but it was worth it.)

The same success story holds true for TaylorMade’s two other top-ranked athletes. Scheffler was 143rd in SG: Putting during the 2024 season before making the switch to the Spider at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He improved to 69th by the end of 2024 and 18th by his final start of 2025.

McIlroy was 97th in 2018, the year before he started dabbling with the Spider. In the 2019 season, when he won three times, including the Players Championship and Tour Championship, he was 25th. Last year, his first full season using the custom torched Spider Tour X, he finished in the top 10 in putting for the first time in his career.

What makes the Spider so successful at taking long-time blade users and turning them into some of the top putters on the PGA Tour?

Take it from Holley himself, who was a blade guy most of his playing career until he started using a Spider.

He was — and still is, as his Handicap Index is +5.4 — an extremely high-level player, giving him a unique perspective to pitch the Spider to Tour pros.

But the thing that makes the Spider tick, Holley says, is TaylorMade’s Pure Roll insert.

The insert is made from a blend of Surlyn and aluminium and has grooves angled at 45˚ that are supposed to help you produce immediate forward roll on your putts instead of skidding. The most common insert on Spiders on Tour is the 80/20 variant with 80 percent Surlyn and 20 percent aluminum, but Holley can also do a fully Surlyn insert to soften the feel or add more aluminum to make it more responsive.

“Any of the guys that have switched like Scottie or Tommy, they see such a big improvement inside that 20 feet,” Holley says. “Especially out on Tour, that’s where those guys make their money. Statistically, the best putter and the worst putter from 30 feet, there isn’t that big of a difference from a strokes-gained perspective.”

After Scheffler’s putter switch, he went from 151st from inside 10 feet in 2023 to 33rd last season.

That kind of statistical success is crucial for Holley, whose job is much different than a Tour rep dedicated to full swing clubs.

Early in the week on a PGA Tour practice green, the perimeter is lined with staff bags, each with dozens of putters leaned up against them, just asking to be rolled. The putter reps stand nearby, waiting to spring into action. But because of the Spider’s success, players visit Holley often, curious about what so many pro are using and winning with.

Technically, Holley’s first putter switch was McIlroy’s move to the torched Spider Tour X at the 2024 Tour Championship.

“All I did on that was punch in the email,” he jokes. “So that was the extent of the switch that I had there.”

Holley also plays a role in the week-to-week maintenance of the putters. He takes care of loft and lie checks and regrippings, like the one he did for McIlroy at Bay Hill last month, the same putter that’s now responsible for two consecutive Masters wins and potentially many more victories.

While McIlroy probably won’t change any time soon, these things have a domino effect. Not only will more players be curious to try a Spider after yet another win, but TaylorMade is launching a whole new line of Spiders on the PGA Tour this week, presumably the first step of a new retail release later this year. (From what Holley and TaylorMade are willing to divulge at this point, it doesn’t look like there’s been much of a change to the shape of the uber-successful Spider Tour or Tour X shapes, nor the Pure Roll Insert. But a new Spider Tour V and Spider Tour X are joining the fray.)

But for Holley, there’s little time to celebrate. Back on Hilton Head Island, his week just got a whole lot busier.

Rory McIlroy will be keeping the Green Jacket for another year after a rollercoaster weekend that ended with his second straight Masters title.

Once again, McIlroy used a full bag of TaylorMade gear to get the job done at Augusta National.

One major change was his driver as McIlroy switched to TaylorMade’s latest model, the Qi4D, late last fall. McIlroy called it the easiest driver switch of his career, and that sentiment was echoed by his fitter, TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld, earlier this week.

“I’ll never forget the testing day with this,” Rietveld told GOLF. “People always ask who is the best you’ve worked with or what’s the best session. That was without a doubt the best driver session I’ve seen in 15 years of doing this stuff.”

Rory McIlroy wins Masters, becomes fourth to win back-to-back at Augusta

McIlroy regularly touches 190 mph ball speed with the driver, which is shafted with a Fujikura Ventus Black 6-X, marking the fifth straight major victory for a Fujikura driver shaft and the Ventus Black profile.

McIlroy plays a low lofted height with the heavy weights in the rear position to improve forgiveness while still being able to launch the ball high. But his driver also features a tour-only bright grey face to help Rory see the loft better. He uses a 9-degree head turned down to 8 degrees to open the face angle, a common preference among players who prefer a draw.

The now-six-time major winner struggled with his driver swing for much of the week, but found something in the final round with clutch bombs on Nos. 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 17. His 350-yard tee shot on No. 13 left him just 183 yards into the par-5, setting up his final birdie of the week that ultimately proved the difference in the one-stroke victory.

While he has used a matching Qi4D 3-wood since November, McIlroy switched back to his longtime Qi10 gamer this week. With the victory, it now means the winners of the last five majors have used a Qi10 3-wood and the last three Masters.

McIlroy did dabble with changing irons earlier this year, but he ultimately went back to his RORS PROTO blades by his PGA Tour season debut at Pebble Beach, which he has used since signing with TaylorMade in 2017.

“We messed around with the CBs a little bit at the beginning of the year,” Rietveld said. “But he’s played these forever. They have a nice short blade length so he can turn them over when he needs to. They hold the spin beautifully.”

At the end of last season, he switched to TaylorMade’s latest wedge platform, the MG5, but kept essentially the same setup as he had before with his previous MG4s. That means continuing to play the LB lob wedge, bent 1 degree weak to 61 degrees.

“This guy had the most underrated short game in the world,” Rietveld said of McIlroy. “And going through finding him a 60 that works for him was a great experience. We’re at 61 loft on this because he creates so much speed at the bottom that that little bit of loft helps that ball come out a little bit more softly and he can be a little more natural with the shot.”

Rory McIlroy makes surprising gear switch before PGA Tour season debut

McIlroy is now the sixth player in the 14 events this season to win using a TaylorMade Spider putter. This comes one year after the putter model won three majors and was the winningest on the PGA Tour.

He has used multiple putters over his nearly 19-year professional career, but finally settled on his on the Spider Tour X in late 2022 and has used a custom torched finish version since late 2024. He had used similar models in years before, but his current model has had the most staying power.

“He’s always loved True Path. He’s always loved the long [sightline],” Rietveld said before pointing out the putter’s 80/20 Surlyn/Aluminum Pure Roll insert. “This is the unsung hero of this Spider momentum.

“When you talk about the roll of the Pure Roll and what this does for players out here, on fast greens, just making sure those misses give you a little bit more roll out, a little bit more distance control.”

Lastly, McIlroy did make his second ball change in as many years, moving from the previous-generation TaylorMade TP5 to the updated 2026 model at the start of the year.

“With the microcoating, he’s seeing much more consistent spin rates,” Rietveld said. “For a player of his standard, that’s a big deal.”

Rory McIlroy got off to a sensational start in his title defense at the 2026 Masters.

McIlroy leads at the halfway mark of this year’s Masters by six strokes as he seeks to become just the third player to go back-to-back at Augusta National.

TaylorMade’s Tour Team and McIlroy have made a few changes to McIlroy’s bag from last season, including a new driver, 5-wood and wedges. He even tried out new irons earlier this season before returning to his RORS PROTO blades.

Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh runs you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

Augusta National presents a unique challenge to the best in the world every year, but with near-perfect conditions, the test is even more demanding.

With a fairly dry lead-up to the Masters and the rare occurrence of no rain in the forecast for this weekend, Augusta National will be as firm and fast this weekend as the club wants it, meaning pros are searching for more height to stop the ball.

That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 11 players chose to drop 4-irons this week in favor of high-lofted fairway woods or hybrids. A few of those players are guys who don’t typically play a 4-iron, like Tommy Fleetwood, Zach Johnson and PGA Tour Champions players Vijay Singh, Mike Weir and Freddie Couples, who has his normal three-hybrid setup this week.

Heard a lot about firm greens this week at Augusta National. Lots of guys seeking more peak height because of the conditions.

But other players, including Akshay Bhatia, Brian Campbell, Jason Day and Matt Fitzpatrick, have all dropped the 4-iron for clubs they’ve had built specifically for Augusta National.

Bhatia added a new Callaway Apex UW ’26 21-degree this week in place of his normal 22-degree X Forged UT 4-iron.

“Basically, he was looking at incoming second shots to Nos. 13 and 15 and needing something hitting a higher apex to land softer on those greens,” Callaway Tour Content Manager Johnny Thompson told GOLF.

Bhatia’s gamer OG prototype UW, which is closer to 17 degrees in loft, remains in the bag as his 5-wood alternative. Despite the roughly three-degree gap between the two clubs, the new UW is more than two inches shorter, which provides an optimal carry yardage gap.

Campbell, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour last season, like Bhatia, also does not play a traditional 4-iron week-to-week, opting instead for Ping’s iDi long iron replacement. But this week, he’s got a G440 Max 9-wood to help him get even more stopping power on the firm greens.

“When he hits it on No. 4 or into 5, that 9-wood is just going to allow it to stop so much faster than even that [iDi]4-iron,” Ping Tour Rep Kenton Oates told GOLF. “The 4-iron gets in there fine, but it still spins like a 4-iron — it’s just not going to react the same.”

Oates said the spin is the real difference maker when it comes to switching from an iron to a fairway wood or hybrid. He could build a 4-iron that nearly reaches the same height a high-lofted metal wood, but it’s the extra spin that really gives a player control on the greens.

“It’s probably not a huge difference on a TrackMan peak height number — maybe only about 15 feet — but that extra height is coming from spin. When the height is coming from spin, that’s when you really start to see the ball actually react on the green and stop. That’s the difference,” Oates said. “That extra 15 feet can end up being 15 feet closer to the hole when it lands.”

Ping had three 9-woods in play this week, 10+ 7-woods and Carlos Ortiz gamed a 26-degree G440 5-hybrid.

Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Jason Day all used TaylorMade 7-woods, but the interesting note there was that Fitzpatrick and Day both kept the 5-woods they already had in the bag, bucking the trend of either having a 5- or a 7-wood. Lowry dropped his Srixon ZXiU 3-iron for the Qi4D 7-wood.

“Sometimes I feel like you need it, especially with the added length,” Day said on Wednesday of the extra fairway wood. “You kind of need a better gap at the top end for some of these holes around Augusta National. So nothing too dramatic, but just the top end.”

Other cool TM fairway note is that Jason Day (Qi4D 7-wood) and Matt Fitzpatrick (Qi35 7-wood) are both using 3w-5w-7w gappings in their bags without 4-irons.

TaylorMade’s Adrian Rietveld told GOLF that both Day and Fitzpatrick have shorter builds on their 7-woods, but otherwise, there’s nothing different about the spec for it to cover both a 3-iron and 4-iron distance. Rietveld said both players are using shot-shaping to hit higher, more floaty shots when they need to cover 4-iron yardage.

Basically, the 7-wood acts as two clubs in one.

Mini driver usage has been growing steadily on the PGA Tour over the past two years, but it seems like it might be peaking at the Masters.

A total of 23 players played a mini driver at Augusta National and it seems the consensus is that the clubs are built for the modern game at the historic course. Callaway lead the way with 10 while TaylorMade had eight.

While several of those mini drivers were from players like Fleetwood, Max Greyserman and Min Woo Lee who game one every week on the PGA Tour, other players like Justin Rose, Harris English and Tom McKibbin had them built in the weeks prior specifically for this course.

“I think it’s all about predictability when it comes to a mini driver,” Callaway Tour Representative Kellen Watson told GOLF. “You have a driver where you know it’s going to carry this bunker, but you don’t know how much it’s going to roll out. With this, you want to know the carry number and have the total be very tight — like nine yards or so — which is perfect.”

Even as the Masters tees have been lengthened over 500 yards in the last 20 years, the bends in the fairways — and the firmness of those fairways — make several holes ideal for players to use a mini driver.

The most obvious case is the long downhill dogleg left par-4 10th, where a drive down the left benefits from the steeper slope. But because a mini driver is easier to work right-to-left, it’s also favored on Nos. 5, 7, which have awkward run-outs and slants in the fairways.

For many longer players, there’s also only one hole where a 3-wood off the deck comes into play: The uphill par-5 8th. But No. 8 allows players to hit a low approach and chase it up, a shot well-suited to a mini driver.

“If you’re a longer player, there are basically no 3-woods off the ground here,” said Oates. “So now the mini driver fills that gap, especially when you combine that with the number of tee shots where you have to work it right-to-left. That combination makes it really valuable.”

Oates said English, who primarily plays a fade with his driver, was hitting his mini driver on 6-7 different holes during practice rounds.

Max Homa also tested out a Cobra King Tec mini that Ben Schomin said was to give him an option off the tee to move the ball right to left.

“The idea was to be able to make a stock swing and have the ball turn over without having to do anything differently with setup or alignment,” Schomin said. “But also have the ability to really swing it around when you need to, like on 10. He felt very comfortable doing both.”

Schomin and Homa had the club dialed for an 8˚-10˚ launch and 2800-3100 spin, but Homa ultimately decided on a 3-wood instead.

Quiet week on the trucks

One common theme with all of these new clubs players have in their bags this week is that the vast majority weren’t built this week.

In fact, Masters week, like most major weeks, is a fairly quiet one on the Tour Trucks.

“There’s really not much going on. I mean, there’s really not much we can do,” Watson said. “At this point, if you haven’t done your job already, then you probably shouldn’t be here.”

Much of the work is validating or re-validating clubs that were built for this week, or minor maintenance jobs like re-grippings and loft and lie checks.

Justin Rose is a perfect example as he had clubs, like his Callaway Quantum Mini Driver and prototype Cleveland RTZ wedge, built for him weeks ago specifically to get ready for the Masters.

The Ping Tour Truck built 109 clubs this week, but the majority of those were players like Vijay Singh, who doesn’t get serviced regularly, or guys like Sandy Lyle, who aren’t even playing this week.

“A lot of the stuff you’re seeing built this week is for past champions or guys we don’t see as much,” Oates said. “The Conners and the Hovlands, they’re already dialed. There’s really not much for us to do.”

Harry Hall goes nuclear on the bag after Round 1

Harry Hall started his Masters with a brand new driver, a Ping G440 LST, one that helped Ping tie Titleist for the lead in driver count for the week, a first in roughly two seasons for Ping.

He also had Ping’s prototype mini in the bag as he continues his torrid pace of gear switches throughout this season.

Already this year, Hall has switched between no fewer than four different drivers, two sets of irons, three sets of wedges, two putters and a golf ball change just for this week.

After Round 1 at Augusta, where he shot 77, he seemed ready to do all of that between then and his Friday morning tee time.

“I’m going to change my driver. I’m going to put two drivers in play tomorrow, different ones. I’m putting a new putter in play and going to figure out on the range,” Hall said Thursday. “I don’t think I spin my irons enough either. I went into a spinnier ball this week, but I still, you know, can’t stop it on a dime like I need to. So I probably need to add off to my irons or do something to compete in these majors.”

Hall appeared to only use the TaylorMade Qi4D driver he was playing most recently before this week and he did switch from his longtime Odyssey O-Works putter to a TaylorMade Spider that he started using at Bay Hill.

After all of that, Hall had a wild Round 2 of five birdies, five bogeys and eight pars for an even-par 72 that puts him at five over for the week and likely to miss the cut.

Golf Pride continues major dominance

No surprise here as Golf Pride continues to dominate grip counts at majors.

Of the top 10 betting favorites heading into the week, eight of them used Golf Pride grips with multiple models represented, including the Tour Velvet, MCC and Align Max families.

Overall, 80 of the 91 players in the field are using a Golf Pride grip.

Justin Thomas (GTS2), was among three players to add a new Titleist GTS driver this week. Tommy Fleetwood said this unique club is 'perfect' for Augusta National

While the Masters is a tradition unlike any other, Augusta National might also be a test unlike any other. But Tommy Fleetwood thinks his bag is uniquely suited to take on that test.

Not only will Fleetwood and other golfers be challenged by Augusta’s wildly fast and massively sloping and undulating greens, but getting to those greens is harder than the average PGA Tour golf course.

According to golf-stat analyst Ron Klos, Augusta National sees golfers hit 72 percent of their approach shots from outside 150 yards versus just 64 percent on the PGA Tour. The biggest differences are that players hit 31.6 percent fewer shots from 100 to 150 yards than on the PGA Tour and a staggering 71 percent more shots from 225 to 250.

That increase in shots hit from 225 to 250 yards essentially means one more of those per round. That’s often a yardage where pros are looking to simply minimize how many strokes they lose as opposed to attacking pins.

Those shots come on Augusta National’s four par-5s, which are all reachable in two for the game’s top players and the long par-3 4th, which is listed at 240 yards. A relatively shorter driver of the golf ball, like Fleetwood, might also have a 220+ yard approach on the 520-yard par-4 11th, especially if it’s into the wind.

But Fleetwood thinks his bag is set up uniquely to handle those extra-long range approaches, thanks to being one of just a few PGA Tour pros to use a 9-wood.

“It’s a great 9-wood golf course,” Fleetwoos said Tuesday. “I think it’s always been — I can’t remember when I first put like a 9-wood in or a high lofted club, but it’s a perfect like 9-wood golf course.

“No, the bag setup stayed the same, really. So the way that I do set it up actually works very well for Augusta, so that’s great.”

Fleetwood first tried a 9-wood in early 2023, and it’s been a staple in his bag ever since.

The club covers roughly a 230-yard carry for him and that comes in handy when trying to bring the ball in high and soft on Augusta’s greens.

“The biggest thing is the 9-wood for me,” Fleetwood said. “If I can put myself in position on the par-5s or the 4th long par-3, like it — for me, I can’t really hit that high 4-iron, so 9-wood helps me a lot.”

The 9-wood has been growing in popularity since players like Fleetwood, Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson started putting them in bags a few years ago to try and get more height out and consistency of the 4-iron spot in their bags. But they’re still pretty much a niche club with most players still opting for either traditional 4-irons or utility iron replacement.

But if Fleetwood or another 9-wood user wears the Green Jacket come Sunday, it probably won’t stay a niche for long.

Tommy Fleetwood's hat isn't his only new addition this week | Tour Report

Tommy Fleetwood’s days of rotating his lids from iconic courses like Pebble Beach, Riviera and TPC Sawgrass have come to an end with the announcement of his new hat sponsor, Blackstone, this week.

But so too have the days of TaylorMade Tour Rep James Holley having to sharpie 11 individual lines on the top of his Spider Tour Black every other week.

Fleetwood showed up at the Valero Texas Open, with a new TaylorMade Spider Tour Black putter, but without the unique Sharpie lines on the top. Instead, Fleetwood’s new wand has a “Pilot’s Eye” alignment aid consisting of a sight dot surrounded by two perpendicular lines that frame the golf ball.

The model and specs are the exact same. The only difference is the alignment aid.

The reigning FedEx Cup champion first went to the one-off Spider Tour putter last spring, and it was part of his hot summer run that culminated with his first PGA Tour victory at the Tour Championship, the DP World India Championship title and the world’s No. 3 ranking.

He finished 2025 ranked 20th on the PGA Tour in SG: Putting, but has fallen off in his first four events this season, despite three top-10 finishes. He’s losing more than three-tenths of a stroke on the greens this season and is 122nd in the category.

“Look, I actually haven’t putted very well this year. It’s been one of the sort of more disappointing ways that I’ve started the year,” Fleetwood said Tuesday when asked about the new alignment aid. “I haven’t played how I wanted to and sometimes it’s nothing more into it than you just need something different to look at, like a slightly different visual or something, just to change up your mindset a little bit. So that’s why I changed the sightlines.”

The new alignment aid clicked on Thursday as Fleetwood opened with a five-under 67, gaining nearly two strokes on the greens, 10th in the field at TPC San Antonio. He was two strokes off the lead after the opening round.

His sharpie lines on the old gamer were initially born out of Holley’s idea to mimic the milled lines on TaylorMade’s Spider ZT (then a prototype), to better frame the golf ball. TaylorMade produced a milled version, but Fleetwood actually liked the sharpie lines better so he kept on using it.

The tough thing was that Holley had to redraw the lines every few weeks.

But that’s a thing of the past, at least for now, with the milled “Pilot’s Eye” mark on Fleetwood’s new putter. The perpendicular lines actually accomplish a similar effect of framing the golf ball, as they are the same width as a ball. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that Holley said Fleetwood has been drawn to the alignment aid before.

“Tommy has always liked the ‘Pilot’s Eye’ and always picked up putters on the green with that alignment,” Holley said. “He started off the year a little slower than he would have liked. So he reached out to test a couple of options to change up the visual when looking down. Much like sharpie lines, the Pilot’s Eye brings attention to the front of the putter and helps him with his alignment.
