Clark’s endorsement deal with Titleist ended at the end of 2025, and all season he has embraced his newfound equipment freedom. No changes have been more prevalent than the ones made to his driver and putter.

The 2023 U.S. Open champion began the season by using four different drivers in his first five events, but eventually settled on the TaylorMade Qi4D. He actually made a change to the driver this week, tweaking the lie angle and switching to a new, unreleased Project X Titan Yellow shaft.

Clark initially settled on the Qi4D, then with the Titan Black shaft, thanks to increased spin consistency, specifically not over-spinning and causing a right miss. However, Clark wanted to dial in his driver to favor a touch more accuracy this week, even if it meant sacrificing a bit of distance.

TaylorMade found an answer with the new Titan Yellow and slightly more upright setting.

“It was probably spinning 100-200 RPM more than he would want but with the consistency of the Qi4D head at that lie angle creates more accuracy which is what he was looking for,” TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld said. “I was happy with him playing that because he’s long enough at his ball speed and if he can get more fairways he doesn’t need the distance.”

He gained more than four strokes off the tee at TPC Craig Ranch, good for 6th in the field. It’s the first non-contract win for the Qi4D driver.

Clark also plays a Qi4D Tour 3-wood, which he added to his bag at the Masters, that is built to match the original spec of his driver.

Once he settled on the top end of the bag, Clark cycled through a few different putters before landing on Ping’s Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset. Clark switched to the Ally Blue at the Houston Open after showing up at the Players Championship with a putter he bought in the pro shop of his home club.

But he loved the five degrees of toe hang on the Ally Blue Onset, which helped counteract his left miss with low torque putters. He switched to a counterbalanced version at the RBC Heritage and was positive in Stokes Gained: Putting in his first two events with it.

He led the field this week by picking up more than 12.5 strokes on the greens.

Designed and engineered in our R&D Lab in San Diego, CA, Titan Black is built to meet the demands of today’s faster, more aggressive swingers. A more elastic handle section progressively firms through the mid and tip, delivering a smooth feel with added stability where it matters most. Synex Technology utilizes multi-axial carbon fibers to reinforce the shaft’s outer structure, increasing hoop stiffness from the handle through the mid-section for efficient energy transfer and enhanced control. By blending feel and stability, Titan Black gives players the confidence to swing faster without sacrificing dispersion or consistency.

Advanced Multi-Material Construction combines the most effective engineering techniques with the finest materials to create one of our longest moveable weight fairways.
The Titanium Qi4D Tour fairway is designed for golfers who seek the ultimate weapon to conquer long par 5s and to thread the needle of the narrowest of tee shots.

ADJUSTABLE PERFORMANCE

Utilizing three Trajectory Adjustment System weights (15g x 1 / 4g x 2) provides the golfer the most mass efficient way to adjust shot shape and spin.
4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimized flight.

CG OPTIMIZATION

Engineers were able to improve launch without adding spin due to the use of an ultralightweight titanium body and advanced CAD model simulations. This result is a fairway that is easy to launch with incredible distance from any lie.
A large 60g tungsten mass pad moves the center of gravity extremely low and forward, creating a hot trajectory for more distance.

At the PGA Championship, we got a chance to hop on the TaylorMade truck and chat with tour rep Sam Day about building Tommy Fleetwood’s bag. Johnny Wunder and Day spent a significant amount of time talking about how Fleetwood sets up his mini driver, and I saw that as the perfect excuse to talk about why I think the mini-driver trend is here to stay, and the two buckets of players a mini driver works well for.

It’s not a secret Fleetwood is a mini driver fan. He’s had one in the bag for several years now dating back to the TaylorMade BRNR from 2023. He even tried to get Tiger Woods to convert during a TaylorMade shoot last year. TaylorMade also produced a piece last year at the RBC Heritage where rep Adrian Rietveld fit Tommy into his new R7 offering. In that video, which you can watch at the bottom of this article, you can really see the versatility of the mini driver, both in performance but also in it’s fitting capability. The R7 has four weight ports that unlock flight, launch and spin bias for players.

Fleetwood likes to use his mini driver off the deck as well as off the tee. For him it’s a true 3-wood replacement, and that’s bucket No. 1 players might fall into. I struggle to hit the mini off the deck, but there’s a large number of players who have tons of confidence in that delivery and see fantastic launch and ball speed out of the larger, more forgiving profile of the mini over a fairway wood.

What’s so important to Fleetwood though is the way that the mini sets up. He wants it to look square at address behind the ball, which is something that mini drivers can struggle with. Most mini drivers are inherently closed, and for lots of players it just screams left. Adrian ended up putting Tommy’s mini in the 1º lower loft upright setting as well as moving some of the weight toward the heel so Tommy could get the draw he prefers without changing the face angle.

“Tommy, he was literally the first guy to put this in,” Day told Wunder. “As soon as he starts playing great with it, he starts hitting it off the deck, and players are looking at it. It makes my truck in Europe super busy. I think we built like 50 of these in like five weeks. Everybody was testing them … It turns over just a bit more than his driver and goes about 10-15 yards shorter. I think it just gives him confidence when he doesn’t feel it completely in the driver.”

TaylorMade has a great mini driver Q&A on its website, and Fleetwood dives into it a little bit more there as well.

“Everyone associates me as a drawer of the golf ball, but I actually hit driver with a very straight ball flight,” Fleetwood said. “So, if I need to turn one right-to-left, the mini for me is a push up to the right side and let it turn over. Off the deck, the head is not as shallow as a 3-wood so I’m going to catch it a little bit more off the bottom, but the mini driver still holds its spin and still launches high enough. For me, it’s actually as good or even better than off the tee. Having a shot that I can hit 275 out of the fairway is huge for me.”

What I think is the more applicable bucket of players

My mini driver isn’t about replacing a 3-wood, because I would never have a 3-wood in the bag to begin with. For me, and lots of others who I know play a mini driver, it’s just about having a reliable second tee option. I don’t plan to hit my mini off the deck. I have, but it’s not a shot I should responsibly hit, and it’s rare I find myself on the golf course in need of a 270-yard off-the-deck carry. Again, at that point, I probably shouldn’t be hitting that shot, or I did something really bad to end up in that position in the first place.

Inspired by one of the most iconic models in TaylorMade history, the R7 Quad Mini Driver pays homage to what’s come before, while creating its own modern identity in the same breath. It’s that very modern design that incorporates proven TaylorMade technologies to give golfers versatility and playability.
R7 QUAD WEIGHTING SYSTEM
The new quad weighting system features four movable weights (13g x2, 4g x2) that provide the ultimate in spin management and shot shape control. Forward CG creates a penetrating flight best suited for maximizing distance whereas rear CG helps prioritize control and ease of use from the deck. Shot shape can also be fine-tuned helping create the most optimal flight. Additional weights can be purchased for a wider range of adjustability.
INFINITY CARBON CROWN
A new satin Infinity Carbon Crown has been added to the R7 Quad Mini Driver chassis creating a stunning look while saving weight for better mass optimization. The cosmetic package is clean, elegant, and confidence-inspiring.

What I love about the mini is it can be a very purposely built tool. Here in the Chicago area, we play short, tight golf courses. Lots of times a 265-yard tee shot is really all you need. So there’s lots of times where I keep the driver in the bag for the majority of the round, and the mini comes out to hit nice high draws that fall softly in the fairway. To me, this is a much better actual use for a mini driver. My bag goes driver, mini driver, 5-wood. The 5-wood is built as a bit of a bomber so I can reach long par-5s most of the time, and it also serves as a nice tee option if I need to really control flight or dial it back on a shorter par-4. For me, it’s a great bag strategy that gives me a lot of flexibility at the top.

Who does it not work for?

I’m a big believer that the mini should not replace your actual driver. I’ve written about it, I’ve made videos about it, and I still maintain my thoughts on that. If you don’t have a good driver, you should get a better driver. If you’re finding success with the mini and it gives you that much more confidence over the driver, then there’s something in that build you might want to try and replicate in a longer, bigger, faster, more forgiving driver. Too often I’ve seen players give up on the driver, hit a really good mini driver, and then a few rounds later they see how much they are actually losing in distance that they end up back on the search for a new driver and the mini ends up staying in the garage. While you absolutely can use a mini driver as a driver replacement — even guys on Tour have done so — I wouldn’t suggest it unless you’ve got a really good reason to do so.

TaylorMade’s Spider putter line keeps racking up majors, although this time it’s not from Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler or any contracted TaylorMade player.

The TaylorMade Spider Tour V Flow-neck putter Aaron Rai used to nail the 68-foot birdie putt on the 71st hole to slam the door shut at the PGA Championship is a putter he uses completely by choice.

Rai’s Spider Tour V was part of the 2024 edition of Spider putters and has found the bags of several players at times, including Collin Morikawa and Nelly Korda. Shane Lowry has had one in his bag since the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, which he won with McIlroy. The Tour V model has a more tapered body than the Spider Tour or Tour X models and features adjustable weights just behind the face, giving it a more forward CG.

In using a TaylorMade Spider Tour V, Aaron Rai is going to become the fifth major winner in the last six to use a Spider putter in the last six.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy won the other four with the Spider Tour X.

The Spider Tour V is TaylorMade's most forward CG… pic.twitter.com/t0xu8GtbDe
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 17, 2026

That more forward CG helps to emulate the CG location of blade putters, making the Tour V a great option for players seeking to move into the Spider platform from a blade.

Rai’s putter features a unique flow neck, similar to the one Morikawa has on his Spider Tour X, that gives the putter a bit more face rotation to the stroke.

The 31-year-old switched to this putter late last August from a face-balanced TaylorMade TP Hydro Blast DuPage mallet, which also featured a Pure Roll insert. This past week at Aronimink, Rai was fifth in SG: Putting, gaining 1.7 strokes per round on the field, including nearly four in the final round.

With the victory, a Spider Tour putter has not only won five of the last six majors, dating back to McIlroy’s 2025 Masters win, but it’s also won eight events already this season, including both major championships.

While the Spider Tour V Rai used is no longer available at retail, the Spider Tour and Spider Tour X head shapes are currently available and feature much of the same technology, most notably the Pure Roll insert. TaylorMade putter rep James Holley credited the insert with much of the Spider’s success on Tour.

Aaron Rai broke through for his second PGA Tour victory and first major title at the PGA Championship Sunday, and it brings to light perhaps the most eclectic gear setup to win a major in several years.

It starts at the top with Rai’s seven-year-old TaylorMade M6 driver. Rai, a gear free agent, has used other drivers over the last couple of years for stretches, but he always kept returning to the TaylorMade high-forgiveness model from 2019. There’s very clearly an emotional attachment with the club, and he showed why this week.

While Rai was 66th in the field in driving distance, he was 4th in accuracy, hitting 67 percent of his fairways, including seven of the last eight on Sunday.

We're potentially five holes away from a 2019 TaylorMade M6 driver winning a major in 2026.

Brandt Snedeker won with a 2017 M2 last week. pic.twitter.com/dGVu1212V6
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 17, 2026

Rai’s victory marks the fifth driver win for TaylorMade in the last five major championships. Those wins came with either the newer Qi10 (2024) or Qi4D (2026) by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

But perhaps most notable about his bag are the covers on his TaylorMade P7TW irons. Rai has used iron covers for the entirety of his career and he explained in a 2021 interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour radio that he still uses them to remind himself of where he came from.

“I grew up in very much a working-class family, and golf has always been a very expensive game,” Rai said. “I started from the age of 4 years old, and my dad used to pay for the equipment, pay for my memberships, my entry fees. And it wasn’t money that we really had, to be honest, but he’d always buy me the best clubs.

“When I was about 7 or 8 years old, [my dad] bought me a set of Titleist 690 MBs, and they were like 800-1,000 pounds back then, just for a set of clubs for a kid. I cherished them. When we used to go out and practice, he used to clean every single groove afterward with a pin and with baby oil.”

Not long after, Rai’s father went out and purchased the iron covers to protect the investment.

“To protect the golf clubs, he thought it would be good to put iron covers on it,” Rai said. “I’ve pretty much had iron covers on all of my sets ever since just to appreciate the value of what I have, and it all started with that first set.

“Although on the PGA Tour, we get given equipment, and we get given everything that we need, it’s more out of principle. The value of not losing perspective of what I have and where I am.

“The covers are going to stay, I’m sorry.”

Rai also keeps up a tremendous run of TaylorMade Spider putters, with the family now taking five of the last six major winners. Rai uses a Spider Tour V, TaylorMade’s most forward CG mallet, which gives the putter a blade-like feeling, with a flow neck for added face rotation.

The putter is a fairly new addition to the bag, first appearing last fall at the BMW PGA Championship.

He also plays both a TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood and 5-wood, and the fairway wood model has been in the bag for each of the last six major champions.

Keep reading below for Rai’s full WITB breakdown.

PROVEN RECIPE

TaylorMade Fairways have dominated on Tour for over a decade because of their unique performance recipe, which enables maximum distance and versatility.
The Qi4D fairway is designed for golfers who want the most advanced technology while still prioritizing versatility and control with amazing distance.

ADJUSTABLE PERFORMANCE

Utilizing a single Trajectory Adjustment System weight (8g x1) provides the golfer a more mass efficient way to adjust flight, spin and swing weight.
4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimized flight and is available in all lofts.

REFINED ATTRIBUTES, BIG CHANGES

Engineers conducted an objective analysis of all the performance attributes and discovered new methods to enhance performance and confidence.
Sit points, lie angles, address views, and center of gravity locations were all updated based on Tour feedback and the expertise of leading fitters worldwide, ensuring the optimal fairway across skill levels.

TOUR-PROVEN TECHNOLOGIES

New and improved cut-through Speed Pocket™ protects ball speed and reduces spin on low-face strikes.
Advanced CAD modeling creates a design with a clean and powerful sound, a foundation for TaylorMade fairway performance.
Twist Face™ features corrective face curvature designed to provide straighter shots on mishits.
Multi-Material Construction allows engineers to maximize performance by increasing discretionary weight.

TaylorMade announced Friday its Qi4D driver and metalwood line will be extended for a two-year product cycle and the company will move to a two-year product release cadence for its metalwoods moving forward.

“We do think this world is changing,” Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s VP of product creation, told GOLF. “We want to change with it, and the experience of getting the right product in your hands and what that means to you as a golfer is really the core of this.”

With the move, TaylorMade becomes the fourth of the six-largest OEMs in the sport to move its metalwoods to a two-year product cycle, joining Ping, Srixon and Titleist. Callaway and Cobra plan on releasing drivers and fairway woods every year.

In an interview with GOLF ahead of Friday’s announcement, Bazzel pointed to four primary factors driving TaylorMade’s decision: the Qi4D’s hot start both in the marketplace and on professional tours, the increasing complexity and lead times of innovation cycles, fitter education and mastery of the product, and changing consumer behavior and trust.

Keeping the golfer’s trust

It wasn’t long ago when TaylorMade released drivers more than once a year. That cadence proved unpopular with consumers, who were wary of buying anything knowing a newer or “better” product could be coming to retail at any moment. Recently, TaylorMade has been much more predictable with its yearly January product launches, but the consumer’s buying patterns have changed.

“People have launch monitors. They’re getting fit. They’re falling in love with what they got fit for,” Bazzel says. “They want to hold on to it a little bit longer, and that’s what the data’s suggesting.”

By moving to a two-year cycle, Bazzel says the consumer can rest assured when they make a purchase during a product launch year, that product is going to be the latest and greatest for a long time.

That’s not right.”

Pros also aren’t seeking to upgrade as often anymore. Thanks to advances in fitting, Bazzel says TaylorMade is seeing more players want to hang onto their drivers longer because they build trust with the club (like World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, for example, who still plays a Qi10 driver from 2024). That also helps build trust with the brand, since pros won’t be asked to upgrade to the newest models every season.

“If we continue to push the narrative and continue to show just these little jumps, it starts to break down between the story we’re telling and the experience the golfer has,” Bazzel says. “For those who stay on an annual cadence, I think you’re ultimately going to lose trust with the golfer.”

‘Slow down to go faster’

As drivers continue to innovate by getting faster and more forgiving, finding that next innovation frontier is getting harder and taking longer. TaylorMade is already well down the road on what would have been its 2027 product, as well as 2028.

Bazzel says TaylorMade internally introduces new products 2 1/2 years before they actually launch. Then they spend time preparing for the product and selling it at full price for nine months before it’s time to ramp up for the next product.

“That doesn’t seem right,” he says.

A few years ago, that wasn’t as big a deal, as technology was improving rapidly enough to create meaningful performance gains every year. Drivers still get better each year, but more work goes into a smaller incremental gain. Now there’s breathing room between releases.

“I’d be lying to say there isn’t a little bit of a pressure release there,” Bazzel says.

But this isn’t exactly TaylorMade taking its foot off the gas pedal, as Bazzel thinks the two-year cycle will allow the team to try more things.

“Getting on this longer cycle should allow us, and the intent is, to come up with bigger leaps in innovation,” he says. “We can slow down to go faster.”

More time for better fittings

Fittings have become more of a focus in TaylorMade’s strategy, so too has training fitters on the new product. Product education has never been more important than it is with a driver like the Qi4D, which has 128 setting combinations with the stock weights and loft sleeve.

Then there’s the time it takes fitters, especially fitters on the PGA Tour, to actually learn how each part performs and how to fit golfers in real-world situations.

“It’s one thing to explain your technology. It’s another thing for fitters today to get comfortable with the product they have to ensure they get the right one for golfers,” Bazzel says. “Even our best fitters in the world, like our tour reps, it takes them a couple months with players to really get a feel for it.”

Now those fitters will have more time to fit players after they’ve mastered the product, meaning more players are going to truly maximize the driver.

Qi4D accelerated the timeline

This isn’t a decision TaylorMade arrived at overnight. It’s something Bazzel says had been discussed for a long time and the company knew was coming at some point. Although if you had asked him when this was going to happen at the beginning of the year, he might have said 2027.

“The data is what the data is. If you’re really paying attention to what’s happening, you’ve got to consider doing it now,” he says. “The Qi4D getting off to a great start 100 percent accelerated our ability to feel comfortable to kind of make that decision now as opposed to waiting a year.”

Buoyed by strong adoption by TaylorMade pros Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa, Nelly Korda and many non-staffers, the Qi4D has been TaylorMade’s best-selling driver in years. And in the first four months of 2026, the Qi4D drivers are the No. 1-selling driver family on Fairway Jockey. Bazzel says their data shows the Qi4D as the top driver in the global marketplace.

My take: A long time coming

Golf gear has never been in a better spot, but that also means any performance gains are getting smaller as things get closer and closer to maxing out. TaylorMade realized, especially with the success of the Qi4D, there’s little reason to come out with a driver that’s marginally better when it can instead spend an extra year focusing on the next cycle.

It also makes switching to the latest gear much easier on TaylorMade staffers on tour. Pros prioritize the comfort they’ve developed with a club over a marginal performance gain. A two-year cycle gives TaylorMade an opportunity to not just build something that’s better — but to create something significantly better.

Lastly, with TaylorMade moving to the multi-year cadence, that leaves just Callaway and Cobra as the industry’s lone single-year release cycles. Will it stay this way for long? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report.
Out on the PGA Tour, when one player starts to have success with something, it doesn’t take long for others to take notice and try it for themselves.

Specifically, putters catch fire more often than other clubs.

In recent years, the Jailbird craze of 2023 is an obvious example, with Rickie Fowler, Wyndham Clark and Keegan Bradley all winniung with Jailbird Cruisers in the span of two months. This year, hordes of pros have flocked to TaylorMade’s Spider putters after the boatloads of wins by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy.

Now, Cam Young’s Phantom 9.5R has the potential to be the next hot putter.

This week, Justin Thomas made a switch to an essential copy of the putter after Young won the Players Championship and the Cadillac Championship over the past month and a half.

Justin Thomas has a new Phantom 9.5R putter that is basically a copy of Cam Young's putter.

“You want Cam’s putter? We were going to get Cam’s putter," Scotty Cameron rep Brad Cloke told me.

Thomas switched from his Phantom 5.5 gamer midway through the RBC Heritage last month… pic.twitter.com/bSLJteD7HQ
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 8, 2026

It’s Thomas’ second switch in a month after he benched his Phantom 5.5 gamer midway through the RBC Heritage last month and played well on the weekend using a backup Newport 2 GSS blade.

He continued using that putter last week, but at Quail Hollow, he wanted to find something that would stick long term. He had worked himself nearly back to 0 strokes gained: putting after a disastrous start to his season at Bay Hill, before a rough opening two rounds at Harbour Town. He lost strokes with the blade last week in Miami.

“Some of it is just calibration. … some of it is just, he, you know, the potential of making good putts but not seeing anything go in type of thing,” Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Brad Cloke told GOLF. “It just seemed like he kind of wanted to start a little bit from scratch this week.”

So he asked for a couple of new putters, including some 9.2Rs, a shape he used previously, and a copy of Cam Young’s 9.5R.

“I literally texted Cameron’s guys and said, ‘Just give me Cam’s putter,'” Thomas said Friday, who played with Young the first two days.

Not an uncommon request.

“Obviously, with the success that Cam is having … these guys are as they see success and they want to see what it’s all about potentially,” Cloke said.

In addition to having a low-bend shaft that mimics the look and toe hang of a jet neck, Thomas’s 5.5 also has smooth face milling that makes it a bit louder-sounding and firmer.

His new putter matches Young’s so it has mid-milled face, but he’s actually preferred the milling on the new 9.5R.

“It was more so of like, ‘Hey, this is different, but I’m kind of liking it,'” Cloke said. “The comment that I heard from him was about feel, but it was more so like, ‘I’m actually surprised I like the way this feels.’”

While the putter is Thomas’ spec length and has his grip, it has the same graphite shaft Young uses and a full-length sight line. Thomas found that made it super easy to line up.

“It’s just so hard to putt well if you don’t have confidence, and so hard to have confidence unless you’re seeing it go in more often,” Thomas said. “So I really, really worked hard Monday through Wednesday on my speed and start line and everything to where I just felt like I was in a better place and more freed up when I was putting.”

Through two rounds, it’s been highly successful as Thomas sits at seven under going into the weekend and is gaining nearly three strokes on the field, good for top 10 in the stat.

Sahith Theegala’s newest putter wasn’t random, finally

While the biggest story in Ping putters was Tony Finau’s bizarre technique with a prototype Oslo Onset long putter early in the week, he ended up going back to the Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue Onset he switched to in February.

In fact, Ping’s Ally Blue headshape had a solid week, earning two high-profile conversions, one so surprising Ping Tour Rep Kenton Oates didn’t even take it seriously.

Sahith Theegala, who, as we profiled in Bag Spy this week, loves to practice with random putters every week on the PGA Tour before returning to his longtime Anser gamer, was losing a putting contest on the practice green using an Ally Blue H when Oates hollered over for him to try his gamer.

“He goes, ‘This is what I used Sunday of Cadillac,'” Oates said. “And I go, ‘What?
He goes, ‘Yeah, I think I’m going to use it on Thursday.'”

Well of course he switches to a mallet this week.

Looks like it might be a counterbalanced Ally Blue 4.

He's slightly ahead of the middle of the field in SG: Putting at +.119. https://t.co/67aUtf5MBn pic.twitter.com/rzrmno0mVw
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) May 8, 2026

Theegala followed through on Thursday in the first round of the Truist Championship and kept it in the bag for Friday as well.

Turns out, this wasn’t another random practice putter for Theegala; this is something he worked on with Ping Principal Design Engineer Tony Serrano. He’s actually had the putter for over a year.

Theegala started working on a mallet putter with Serrano, feeling like he could gain forgiveness over his Anser blade.

“The key thing for him is, he has a certain stroke, a certain rotation in his stroke that requires something with some toe down,” Serrano said. “He’s always played an Anser 2 that hang at that 40 or 42 degrees that work perfectly for his stroke.”

The Ally Blue H has the same plumber’s neck hosel Theegala is used to and similar CG and toe hang properties, making it a more natural transition.

At the RSM Classic last November, Serrano and Theegala spent lots of time with a Scottsdale Tec Ally Blue H, but it was the PLD Milled version that ended up going in the bag. Theegala ended up putting a counterbalance grip on it as well, but Serrano didn’t know when or why he added that himself.

A new Ally Blue H is also in the bag of Kristoffer Reitan as the PGA Tour rookie finds himself three off the lead heading into the weekend.

Reitan’s PLD Milled Ally Blue H is virtually identical to the Scottsdale Tec version, complete with the aluminum head, steel sole plate and PEBAX insert. But it was made from scratch to have an uninterrupted sight line.

After visiting Ping’s PLD Putting Lab in February, the Ping team discovered that Reitan needed a putter with more toe hang than the face-balanced model he was using. He loved the Scottsdale TEC feel and visual with the white head, but just wanted a full sight line.

Serrano said it was simply easier to make him a new PLD head than repurpose an existing Scottsdale TEC.

Rory McIlroy returns to Qi4D 3-wood

In his first event back since winning his second green jacket, Rory McIlroy changed the one club he switched out for his his big Masters win.

After using a Qi4D fairway wood since November, McIlroy went back to his Qi10 3-wood for the Masters, and promptly won his fifth straight major for the club.

But that turns out to be a short-term reversion for McIlroy as he’s back in a Qi4D 3-wood at Quail Hollow, where he’s won four times.

McIlroy said on Wednesday the switch was made because his Qi4D had a bit of a left miss.

“I had been using the 4D 3-wood at the start of the season. I noticed that it just had a little bit of a left bias in it,” McIlroy said. “So I went back to an old Qi10 for a while. But that wasn’t, it really wasn’t spinning enough. It’s more like a mini driver than a 3-wood.”

McIlroy actually said that kind of club could be useful at the Memorial, seemingly teasing he’ll use it at Muirfield Village next month, but for this week at Quail Hollow and next week at the PGA Championship, he wanted something with a bit more spin.

He started working on a new 3-wood with the TaylorMade team.

“Post-Augusta we went back and looked at the data and he was actually getting center strikes that were drawing too much,” TaylorMade Tour rep Keith Sbarbaro said. “So the club was acting like he was toeing it. It was kind of gear-affecting left.

“So what we did is we moved the CG a little more toward the toe to try and square that up. The other thing he was getting some under-spinning shots that were knuckling a little bit.”

I arrived in Carlsbad ready for a week full of fittings, tearing apart my entire golf bag and offering me a new lease on equipment. Little did I know my favorite part of the entire week would come in the first few minutes.

Before I did any full-swing testing, my first hour was spent in TaylorMade’s putting studio, spending a full 60 minutes analyzing my stroke, my former gamer putter and working me through TaylorMade’s suite of flatsticks. I learned quickly just how much can be overlooked in the typical putter decision. People meander to Dick’s Sporting Goods and roll a couple of putts with different putters and make a choice on the spot. It’s all feel. TaylorMade — like all manufacturers — doesn’t want you doing that. But not everyone gets the full putter fitting treatment.

After rolling a few 10-footers with my former putter under super slo-motion cameras, it was clear that I often make a very smooth, neutral path at the ball, but have a tendency to leave the putter face open ever-so-slightly. On occasion, as much as 3° open, which, with a 7-iron, might not be a big deal. From eight feet and with the match on the line, 3° open might offer you a 10-percent make rate.

How I ended up in a TaylorMade Spider Tour X

I was gaming a wider version of a blade putter, mostly because I enjoy the look and feel of what that offers. But when it came down to performance with my stroke, the blade was finicky. On long putts, I had the tendency to hook putts at times — again, every so slightly — which would result in starting my strokes way left of target. For really long putts, that just means the ball is moving further and further from the target the longer the putt is.

But that’s where a fitter comes in. TaylorMade’s genius putting staff put a bunch of mallets in my hands that day, and the squareness and size of the putterhead closed down the face a sizeable amount in my stroke. Suddenly, my most “open” strokes were 1.5° open. The make rate on those misses is bound to increase. But the important point was that the majority of putts were now less than 1° open.

An added benefit of the larger head has, in recent weeks, shown itself more than it ever could in an indoor studio. Those 30- and 40-footers, where I would occasionally force the face closed (and putt some tiny draw spin on putts) — I was subconsciously lining up on the toe end of the putter head. That causes all sorts of lag-putt issues, leaving so many six-footers for par. No one wants that grind.

Thankfully, the larger head and weight of the mallet has made setting up to the ball very easy and allows me the feeling of my putter being a pendulum — the little white ball at the base of the stroke just gets in the way, and the putter does all the work. That kind of simplicity is something my short game has been looking for — and one my scores have no doubt appreciated early this season.

Listen, if you’ve spent any time around a Tour truck, you know that the distance between a “good” driver fitting and a “legendary” one is measured in fractions of a millimeter… and a whole lot of sweat. I recently sat down with TaylorMade’s Senior Tour Manager, Adrian Rietveld, for an episode of Tour Validated, and what he broke down regarding Rory McIlroy’s transition into the Qi4D is the kind of gear-head gold that keeps me up at night.

Rietveld, a.k.a. AD, has been a close buddy since my days back at WRX, and watching his evolution from a new U.S. hire coming over from the DP World Tour to the Alpha fitter on the TaylorMade truck has been one of my proudest things to witness in this industry. There’s nothing better than getting those texts early in the season when he’s had a breakthrough with a player or a new piece of tech. The passion and dedication is inspiring; honestly, much of what I know about this game comes from this guy and Callaway’s Kellen Watson. Podcasts like this make me really grateful all over again.

Precision at 190 MPH: The ‘Rory Robot’

Adrian started peeling back the curtain on the R&D process at The Kingdom. Imagine a robot calibrated specifically to Rory’s delivery: 5 degrees up, high 180s to 190 mph ball speed. That isn’t just a machine; it’s a simulation of a freak of nature.

The stress in the room was palpable. Adrian noted that at those speeds, a face angle discrepancy of just 0.2 degrees, a literal hair’s breadth, would send the ball off the range. It gives you a chilling appreciation for how precise Rory has to be with his own hands. When the robot finally started spitting out that signature Rory flight, Adrian knew they were close. But “close” doesn’t win green jackets.

The 2400 RPM Sweet Spot

For years, the “Rory Number” has been 2200 to 2400 RPM of spin. That’s where he owns the air. The challenge with the new Qi4D architecture was tightening the standard deviation without losing the integrity of the flight.

Adrian described a session at The Bears Club where the data was almost unbelievable. We’re talking about 190 mph ball speeds with a spin deviation of maybe 150 RPM over dozens of shots. That is pure, unadulterated consistency. It’s the kind of performance that makes a guy like Rory put down his old gamer and never look back. In fact, Adrian mentioned that once Rory hit the final Qi4D build, he didn’t even pick up his previous driver again.

The ‘Harry Diamond’ Effect

One of the coolest nuggets Adrian dropped was about the visual evolution of the club. When they were looking at finished parts at Wentworth, Rory’s caddy, Harry Diamond, made a crucial observation. Harry pointed out that while the earlier prototype was clean, the retail-leaning Qi10 had a distinct top line on the crown.

Rory was looking at both, and Harry, who knows Rory’s eye better than anyone, helped bridge that gap. Adrian realized it was easy to just bring both versions to The Bears Club for the final showdown. Having Harry involved isn’t just about carrying the bag; it’s about that second set of eyes that ensures the player isn’t just seeing good numbers, but seeing a look that inspires total confidence.

This isn’t an off-the-rack build. Every gram and every quarter-inch was debated. Here is the full breakdown of the big stick Rory used to conquer Augusta:

Beyond the nuts and bolts of one driver, you have to look at the run Rietveld has been on with TaylorMade. It’s unprecedented. We’re talking about a guy who has managed the bags of the top three players in the world simultaneously, a “Fitter’s Triple Crown” that most in the industry can only dream of.

His track record isn’t just about longevity; it’s about stability. Adrian has overseen a period where TaylorMade athletes have captured seven of the last nine Masters titles. Whether it’s Scottie Scheffler’s unmatched ball-striking, Tommy Fleetwood’s unique iron requirements, or Rory’s pursuit of the career Grand Slam, Adrian is the common denominator. He has transitioned from a “driver specialist” into a master of the entire bag, proving that the secret sauce at TaylorMade isn’t just the carbon, it’s also the people who know how to tune it.

The Emotional Connection

What I love about Adrian is that he isn’t just a “numbers guy.” He takes this personally. He talked about the stress of the “Masters pursuit” and the 10 years of work leading up to Rory’s recent success.

You can have all the robots and Trackman data in the world, but at the end of the day, it’s about a player looking down at a piece of carbon and feeling like he was “born with a driver in his hand.” Rory’s specific Qi4D setup, with that grey face and the top line Harry helped dial in, was a collaborative build that started as a shell at East Lake and ended with a green jacket.

Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report.
Jordan Spieth doesn’t change equipment often and when he does, it’s rarely during the season, which makes his moves before this week’s Cadillac Championship all the more intriguing.

After a first-round 65 Thursday — his best score of the season that left him one off Cameron Young’s first-round lead — Spieth was asked why he hit nearly 200 balls on the range on Tuesday. Turns out he has good reason.

Not only did Spieth switch to a new Titleist GTS2 driver and 3-wood, but he’s also playing a new golf ball, a Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash. Throughout his career, Spieth has played a version of the Titleist Pro V1x, which is usually the spinnier of the two golf balls, especially with irons and around the greens. But this season Spieth said he’s noticed times where his spin seems a little too high.

“I’ve been spinning a lot the last year and a half on the range,” he said Thursday. “I just thought it was a driving range thing. And I’ve been taking my [launch] monitor on to the golf course and trying to see. Then I had, I don’t know, maybe a dozen shots I could tell you in the last year or so that came off just odd for an iron, spinny, ended up short.”

Spieth wanted to test this at the Masters, but since Augusta National does not allow launch monitors on the golf course, it had to wait until the following week at the RBC Heritage for him to test the lower-spinning Pro V1x Left Dash. That’s when he approached the Titleist Tour team about making a switch.

“I just saw it happen, and I had a couple shots cost me what I thought were perfect shots kind of, you know, occasionally the first few you’re going to think, oh, it’s coincidental, there’s a wind or something like that,” he said. “But it was enough of a sample size to say let me explore other options.”

He stuck with his standard Pro V1x at Harbour Town and kept testing at home in the off week. By the time he got to Doral this week, he was prepared to move into Left Dash.

Spieth worked with Titleist Tour Rep JJ Van Wezenbeeck and Director of Tour Validation and Research Fordie Pitts on the range to confirm the move to Left Dash was the right one. They found the Left Dash was spinning roughly 300-500 RPMs less than his Pro V1x, depending on the club.

Spieth called a ball change “extremely rare” for him mid-season. He’ll usually wait until the offseason to test new gear, like he did this past winter with Titleist’s new 2025 T100 irons and the Vokey SM11 wedges.

He said he did switch from the 2021 to the 2025 model of the Pro V1x last spring in-season, but that was a much simpler move.

“And those balls weren’t super different. This is a little bit bigger jump. But I hit enough shots to feel confident that it was better for me than what I was playing,” Spieth said. “I’ve always played the highest-spinning ball because I thought I needed it in the long irons. Now with this, whatever my makeup is, and then just kind of added speed; my spin rates have been fine if not too high. So it’s actually kind of nice to be able to drop it down a little bit.”

Not only did Jordo game the new GTS2 driver today, but he also has a new GTS2 3-wood.

He was also in a TSR fairway wood so big changes at the top of the bag for Spieth.

Went out in 31 at Doral so they same to be holding up well through nine holes. https://t.co/xBddd8hyFD pic.twitter.com/ujXj50rkyq
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) April 30, 2026

After the ball was dialed in, Spieth was already liking what he saw with the GTS2 driver and said he needed a new 3-wood after his TSR3 gamer caved in on him. He and Van Wezenbeeck worked on the range to dial in the new driver and 3-wood to match his lower-spinning golf ball.

He also changed to the Fujikura Ventus Black OG shaft in the 3-wood to match his driver, but after the round he wasn’t sure if the GTS2 was the perfect one for him yet.

“It’s kind of a trial run,” Spieth said. “I didn’t hit it great today so I’m going to go hit a few on the range and continue to fall in love with it.”

He gained nearly a half stroke off the tee in Round 1 and had been losing strokes all season.

Below is a Q and A with McLaren Head of Design-Irons and Wedges, JP Herrington, on Rose’s testing process with the club. Herrington personally built the irons Rose is using. (Eds. note: This Q and A has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.)

Good look, courtesy of @MadeForTheRange, at the McLaren Golf irons Justin Rose is putting in play this week.

Still was testing both the blade and the cavity-back 4- and 5-irons, we'll see which ones he goes with come Thursday's opening round in Miami. pic.twitter.com/pQMvOZgJId
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) April 29, 2026

Jack Hirsh: What does the fitting process look like for someone who had a hand in designing these irons?

JP Herrington: One of the first things we want to do is really establish that address profile — what it looks like looking down at the golf club, the face profile, toe height, par height, that transition in between that leading edge and all those offset and those things. Justin said early on that the first thing you do is set it down at address, right? So if you feel that confidence or just that the look that fits your eye, that starts those positive vibrations.

What comes after you lock in the look?

Once you establish that face profile, then you can start on the next phase, which would be ultimately the sole and CG. We created a lot of prototypes and just kind of had a competition of the soles based on his performance and feel. If there were adjustments, you go back, you make adjustments, you retest, you just keep repeating that process until you get it right.

How do you test and refine CG?

You want to hold one variable constant — let’s say the CGX — and do a variable on CGY, and then vice versa. So now you’re identifying those variables. Then you want to hold all those things that we prototyped and tested into what that design is going to ultimately end up being.

What was he looking for in this set that he wasn’t getting with what he was playing previously?

The sole that he was using felt a bit clunky through the turf, right? And that also created some knuckleballs type of thing, flyers and things like that, not generating that consistent spin. Consistency in those spin rates and launch angles is very high priority for Justin. He’s like a human launch monitor at the end of the day.

What kind of sole is on his irons right now?

So currently right now we’ve got him into a lower bounce than that. One big bounce step down from the stock set with a real crisp leading edge. He has both sets and and will be going back and forth depending on turf conditions and softness and things like that. So if he needs a little bit more resistance to digging through impact, based on turf conditions, then he has that option.

How does his delivery influence those decisions on what you do to avoid that with these irons?

He has that kind of moderate attack into the golf ball. He’s not picking it every time and he’s not digging trenches out there. It’s just a real smooth delivery. He hits that ball first and then that thing is going to cut into the turf, and then get out of the divot and maintain that speed through the divot, which is important to finish the swing.

Where do the Series 3 irons fit in? He mentioned he wasn’t sure whether he was putting in a Series 3 4- or 5-iron to his set.

He played the 4- and the 5-iron Thursday in the Series 3. One of the main things was that it was really holding its line very nicely, that face stability. That club has a higher MOI than the Series 1. It got a little bit more peak height and a little bit more ball speed, and that trajectory that he’s looking for as well.

What kind of ball speed is he seeing with, let’s say a 6-iron

He was in the realm of about 135 mph 6-iron, and he’s been approaching 140 mph very comfortably. But it’s not just about that ball speed. It’s coupled with the spin, and that spin combination at that number was really performing.

Any other key fitting elements?

That progressive offset that we’re carrying forward into the retail Series 1. With more offset in those long irons, he can square the face easier, and then into the mid irons it reduces and then reduces further into the short iron. And there was never a question about the shaft. He loves his KBS C-Tapers. It’s super stable, and we didn’t want to change too many variables.

Fleetwood dropped his 56˚ wedge this week (going 52-60 instead) and added a TaylorMade P770 4-iron in between his 9-wood and 5-iron.

According to TaylorMade Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld, Fleetwood’s P7TW 5-iron carries 220 while his 9-wood carries 240, so the goal was to find something to fit that 230 carry window.

The pair tested both this weak 4-iron (24˚) and a stronger P770 5-iron to try and fill the gap. Rietveld said both clubs have their advantages for roll out and different distances, but ultimately they went with the weak 4-iron, which he said might also get use on layups for the par-5s. All of the par-5s measure 570 or longer and two are over 600.

Fleetwood and Rietveld were sold when the former flushed the 4-iron on the par-3 9th during practice rounds and produced 151 mph ball speed, 108-foot apex height, 4683 RPMs of spin and a carry of 229 yards. A perfect gap filler.

This is an awesome example of building golf clubs specifically for the course, and many amateurs would be wise to do the same for their home course.

Most weeks, Fleetwood can live with the 20-yard gap between his 9-wood and 5-iron, but when he is presented with so many shots between 220 and 240 yards, why not add another option there to avoid having to hit half shots with a fairway wood or long iron?

Our hope: that you might see shades of your own game in one of our panelists’ and take some learnings and inspiration from their fitting experiences.
Going into Fully Fit, I thought I knew what kind of equipment was right for my game. Safe to say, I was very wrong, especially when it came to my irons.

A little backstory: Two years ago, I started on a journey to become a true scratch golfer. I got lessons and completely retooled my swing. Before that, I played a cut and hit down on the ball, which created a lot of early extension and left my hand-eye coordination to dictate ball striking — “sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe s—.” At the time, I was a 5-handicap. I needed help.

Then came the pivot.

The lesson plan shifted my swing to be much less prone to early extension and more geared toward hitting up on the ball rather than down. It sounded simple enough in theory, but the real-world impact was anything but.

This new approach created a massive issue from 8-iron down. I started noticing a gnarly split in north-south dispersion. The ball wasn’t going where I wanted, and I had lost all the trust I previously had in my irons and wedges. For what it’s worth, I’m a high-launch, high-spin player by nature, and that combination was no bueno.

Enter the moment of truth: a fitting session at The Kingdom with Matt Simone.

Matt is the kind of fitter who makes you believe in the process again, not just the end result. We started tinkering with lofts, chasing a theoretical fix that would help me cover the ball more consistently and keep it from running up the face. The idea was simple on paper: stronger lofts should tame launch and spin just enough to bring my numbers closer to target.

What happened next felt like a revelation.

The adjustments started to take hold in a way that surprised me. I had a feeling I hadn’t experienced in a while: I trusted my irons to do their job. The result was a real, tangible improvement in how I could control distance and direction, and, crucially, trust the club to do what I asked without fighting my swing. It wasn’t magic, but it changed my relationship with the game in a meaningful way.

Fast forward to now: I ended up in TaylorMade P770 irons, and the arc of my journey has felt like a straight line toward a better game.

In just three months, I’ve moved from a 2-handicap to a 1. The swing feels less like a constant battle and more like a collaboration with the gear I’m using. The confidence I’ve gained isn’t about chasing a perfect number; it’s about knowing I can pull any iron, hit my number, get it close, and walk away from a round without giving away three or four shots to avoidable mistakes.

Scratch is still on the horizon, but I’m closer than I’ve ever been. And I credit a lot of that progress to being deliberate about my equipment and trusting the process.

When I pull an iron now, I’m not wondering if I’ve got the right model or loft. I’m looking at the shot in front of me, feeling the club respond the way I expect and letting that confidence take over.

If you’re chasing consistency, I’d offer the same advice: start with gear that matches your swing, not the other way around, and give yourself the space to grow into it.
