The Woods family broke a long drought Sunday at the PNC Championship, but the most famous family in golf is still searching for the winner’s circle.

On the par-3 hole at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, 15-year-old Charlie Woods smoothed a 7-iron from 176 yards that took one hop and rolled right into the cup for an ace.

The golf world went wild as the younger Woods accomplished something his 15-time major-winning father, Tiger Woods, hadn’t done in competition in 26 years. It was Charlie’s first-ever hole-in-one at the same event where four years ago he made his first-ever eagle.

Team Woods kept rolling after that. The first-round co-leaders after a 59 Saturday, kept making birdies. They finished with a 57 Sunday and a record-setting 36-hole score of 28 under.

But in the end it wasn’t enough.

Bernhard and Jason Langer also finished at 28 under, and on the first playoff hole, Bernhard, who was last to putt, curled in an eagle putt to beat the Woods’ and win their second straight PNC Championship.

“It was a special day,” Jason Langer said. “What a treat to play with Tiger and Charlie. Charlie is an awesome player. You know, amazing to witness that hole-in-one on 4. A real honor for me to play with Tiger.

“It was tight all day. We were within a shot either way from the very beginning, and he [Bernhard] really played well. I put a little bit of pressure on him in certain spots, and he made a bunch of putts and was so consistent. It was a special day. Won’t forget it.”

Charlie’s hole-in-one and the Langer’s win were part of a wild final round at the PGA Tour Champions-sanctioned event that was dubbed the “greatest day in PNC Championship history” by NBC’s Dan Hicks. Shortly after Charlie’s ace, Paddy Harington, son of three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, made his own ace at the 8th hole. The two aces were just the second and third in the 27 editions of the tournament.

“That was the thrill of a lifetime to be able to have that moment with Charlie, make his first hole-in-one, Sam on the bag, just our family and friends,” said Tiger, whose daughter Sam caddied for him. “That’s what this event is about. It’s about bonding and family.

“For us to have that experience together, I know we didn’t win, but it was the fact that we competed. No one really made a mistake out there. We had to earn it, and that’s what you want to have. Hats off to Langers. They played amazing.”

The Langers pulled into a share of the lead three times on Sunday, but could never take the outright lead away from Team Woods. The pairs kept matching each other shot for shot, making birdies on the same hole nine times, and answering Charlie’s hole-in-one on No. 4 with an eagle on the par-5 5th.

Both teams parred the 17th hole and birdied the 18th hole after the Langers missed an eagle putt from just off the green.

That sent them back to the 18th where Charlie Woods and Bernhard Langer hit it nearly in the same position as they had in regulation. Tiger Woods hit their approach just right of the green while Jason Langer — playing from 20 yards closer thanks to dad Bernhard playing nearly 50 yards farther up than Charlie — hit his approach 20 feet left of the hole in the center of the green.

Team Langer has now won a record six PNC Championships; Jason has won four times while brother Stefan — who caddied for Jason — has won twice.

It was Tiger Woods’ first tournament since missing the cut at the Open Championship at Royal Troon. He did not play two weeks ago at the Hero World Challenge, the charity exhibition event he hosts in the Bahamas, saying his game wasn’t sharp and revealing he underwent a sixth back surgery in September.

The week was a family affair for Team Woods as Tiger had 17-year-old daughter Sam caddying for him for the second consecutive year. Woods’ ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, also was onsite watching the action.

After participating in the Friday Pro-Am, Team Woods will set out in the first official round on Saturday morning at 8:22 a.m. ET. They’ll play alongside Justin Thomas and his father, Mike Thomas, on Saturday.

Here are the teams facing Tiger Woods and Charlie at the 2023 PNC Championship this week

The official tournament doesn’t get started until Saturday, but Friday’s Pro-Am will be carried on TV and streaming, so you can follow along as Tiger, Charlie and numerous legends of the game get tuned up for the tournament over the weekend.

Most tee times for Friday’s Pro-Am have one team assigned to them. The exception is the 9:00 a.m. ET starting time on the 1st tee. Both the teams of Annika Sorenstam and her son, Will McGee, and Team Woods are scheduled for that spot. It’s not clear whether they’ll play alongside each other, or whether Team Sorenstam will play the front nine and Team Woods will take over for the back.

You can watch Friday’s PNC Championship Pro-Am on Golf Channel starting at 12 p.m. ET. Peacock will offer a simulcast of Golf Channel’s coverage.

Hello, friends, and welcome to this week’s final limited-edition PNC Championship Rogers Report! I write to you all from the floor of Orlando International Airport, snacking on an Auntie Anne’s pretzel. I didn’t get a ton of sleep and this continues a run of less-than nutritious meals, but my heart could not feel more full.

I got to meet so many people at the PNC: players, caddies, family friends, media and fans. I will get sappy only once in this column, and here it is: I think I might be the luckiest gal alive. Not only because I just had an incredible 2022 work-trip finale at the PNC, but because my BeReal went off at the perfect moment Sunday morning. I’d like to take a moment to thank whoever runs this App for being on my side.

The range

When I arrived to the course this morning, I dropped my backpack off at the media center and hustled over to the range. This may be a fun family event, but the vibes were definitely more serious Sunday. Major championship or exhibition, when it comes to winning time, these pros get dialed in.

Somehow I secured a position as the official rope-lifter for players and caddies as they made their way from the chipping area to the range. Tiger Woods thanked me twice, but really it was my pleasure. And my duty. There was no way I’d allow a Bryson-rope incident on my watch.

While the Thomases and Charlie Woods hit balls, Tiger was fixated on the new water bottle that caddie Joe LaCava had put in his bag.

“What the hell is this?”

Apparently it was some high-technology water bottle that uses LED light to clean itself.

On Saturday, JT joked with the media that everyone was there to watch his dad, who was next to Charlie, warm up. He came armed with another joke on Sunday. Someone inside the ropes was sporting a red shirt, and Thomas commented, “Looks like you guys are rooting for someone in particular today. Isn’t that funny?” He may not be Max Homa on Twitter, but JT is definitely witty.

The round

I (along with 3,500 others) made my way to the first tee to watch the final group tee off and ended up standing next to someone who does security at golf events. “Is it 10 times harder to control the crowds when Tiger’s playing?” I asked. He didn’t miss a beat.

“Probably 15,” he said.

I realized I hadn’t ever really considered all that goes into preparing for Tigermania. On television, it looks like a one-man show sometimes. (Two, counting LaCava.) But there were about a dozen people I met this week whose job it was to make sure things went smoothly with Tiger. Crowd control, lunch delivery, video, photography, carts, you name it.

I’d also never met anyone on Tiger’s team before this week. I always thought of his entourage as an exclusive clique that sported red on Sundays and kept their heads down. I met LaCava and Tiger’s right-hand man, Rob McNamara, and they were as nice as they come. Behind the “Tiger bubble” is a group of people just like anyone else (surprise!). The only difference? They’ve got a 15-time major champion in the center of their circle.

Tiger’s daughter, Sam, was there again Sunday. She and her friends were decked out in red and black Lululemon attire but hung back outside the ropes. Sam’s friends were standing closer to the action than she was the few times I saw her — and I’m not sure how many people in the crowd noticed she was there. She kept the lowest of profiles while her brother and dad captured the attention of every person on the premises.

I’ve always wondered why Tiger ignores autograph requests. Justin Thomas did the opposite, explaining that he doesn’t sign during rounds. He must’ve said it 15 times throughout the day, and it suddenly dawned on me that it’s probably a lot easier not to even engage with the requests. Tiger would be talking all day if he replied to every ask.

And now for some hard-hitting journalism: Tiger didn’t go with his signature peanut butter and banana sandwich Sunday. He had what looked like ham and cheddar cheese. And because I know you’re all wondering, I went with a chicken caesar salad wrap and Fritos for the third consecutive day.

Post round: Charlie’s jokes

On to my absolute favorite part of the day (and possibly entire week): the post-round hang. Between signing their scorecards and their post-round pressers, there were a few minutes of relaxation for Team Thomas and Team Woods. Tiger immediately made his way to JT’s dog, Frank, who had no idea he’s gained the affection of an 82-time PGA Tour champion. What a life!

Then came Team Woods’ presser. I made it a goal to ask the players some questions this week. I’ve chickened out a few times before, but there was no time for that at the PNC Championship. And I’m glad I spoke up, because Charlie and Tiger gave awesome answers when I asked what they learned about each other’s games this week.

“Yesterday, that’s the best he’s ever played in a while,” Charlie said. “And that kind of shocked me a little bit.”

Tiger’s reply was perfect. “Yeah, I used to be good.”

There are exactly two people on the planet who are allowed to take shots at Tiger like that, and those are his children. Kudos to Charlie for taking full advantage of that right on a national stage. But Charlie wasn’t done joking around. Justin Thomas snuck over to a microphone and asked Charlie for a background story of the Snoopy hat he rocked all week.

Charlie gave the most Tiger Woods answer I’ve ever heard. “Well, it’s the hat that was in my closet and fits the best, and that’s all I can say about it.” I got flashbacks to Tiger’s presser at the Hero World Challenge when he was asked when exactly he had surgery. Tiger smiled and said “this year.” The man reacts quickly, especially when he doesn’t want to give too much information away. It’s safe to say Charlie takes after him not only on the golf course, but in that sense as well. Tiger looked at him approvingly and said “great answer.”

Looking at the Woods boys’ reaction to the question, I can’t help but think there’s a lot more to this story that the public will never know.

I will leave you all with this photo of the broadcast that I received from a handful of friends. Charlie was going to work on a putt while I was going to work on a package of DunkAroos from Wawa. Safe to say we both had a good day.

The ankle, the foot and the knee. Those are the three injuries we’re hearing about the most this week at the PNC Championship, and strangely, only one of them belongs to Tiger Woods.

In addition to Team Woods’ noted injury struggles, the PNC’s defending champions, Team Daly, is also less than 100 percent this week.

“I’m getting my knee replacement done Wednesday, full knee replacement,” John Daly said Friday. “So I’ll be out for a while.”

Dad and two-time major winner John put off having his left knee replaced so he could play with son, University of Arkansas sophomore John II, this week. Because of the injured knee, Daly said John II will be the one putting the team on his back in Orlando.

Charlie Woods is also hurting. Here’s what happened, according to family friend

“I’m a little banged up, but I’ll be the saddle. He’ll be the horse,” Daly told Golf Channel’s Steve Sands during the pro-am broadcast.

This event is one of the highlights of the year for Daly, he said, so there was very little chance he would miss it, especially with him not being able to see his son that often now that he’s attending college.

“I think just being able to play with my son like this and in a tournament like this, yeah, you want to win,” Daly said. “But it’s not heartbreaking if you don’t because it’s just being able to be out here with him and play golf with him in a tournament that is a lot of fun.

“Two-man scrambles, we don’t get to do this much on Tour. It’s just a blast to be able to play in it.”

Daly has been open about his use of a cart under the American with Disabilities Act at the 2019 PGA Championship due to osteoarthritis, among other conditions, and has even suggested Woods use a cart as well.

“I’m not embarrassed to take a cart,” Daly said. “It’s not helping my golf game by any means. I would rather walk and play golf because then you have time to settle down on a good hole or a bad hole and you’re walking instead of just getting in the cart and going up and hitting the shot. It’s actually a big disadvantage. But if I could walk, I’d definitely do it.”

Woods is using a cart this week but said he would not do so for a regular PGA Tour event. The PNC Championship is sanctioned by the PGA Tour Champions, where carts are allowed. Woods didn’t hit many full shots during the pro-am on Friday and Daly was limited as well.

“I can’t imagine how much pain [Woods is] in, but I know mine is — I had [my right knee replaced] three years ago, and it’s no fun when you can’t walk and can’t turn and be able to get out and practice enough and complete, which I can’t do right now really,” Daly said. “I pray for Tiger. I hope his leg holds up and gets fixed because we need him on the Tour. For me, I’ve had probably more surgeries probably than Tiger. They just keep adding up over the last five years. But I get this metal put in this knee, hell, I got more metal than the Bionic Man does.”

Daly was light hearted about the condition of his body, later telling Sands on the broadcast, “If I knew that I was going to live this long I would have taken worse care of myself.”

However, the downtime after surgery will allow him to spend more time with John II, he said, as he’ll be recovering while his son is also home for the holidays.

In the meantime, in addition to taking it easy during the pro-am, Daly appears to be doing the same on the range. GOLF’s James Colgan, who is on site at the PNC this week, reported Daly showed up at the range just 20 minutes before his first-round tee time.

Daly’s warm-up lasted eight minutes.
