J.T. Poston survived a marathon Sunday at Muirfield Village, playing 32 holes, including a two-hole playoff, to collect his fourth and biggest PGA Tour win at the Memorial Tournament. Notably, the win saves him from having to play 36 on Monday as it qualifies him for the U.S. Open in two weeks.

Poston has overhauled his golf bag over the past few months, adding several new clubs and a new golf ball to his setup.

The 33-year-old is the first winner on the PGA Tour with a Titleist GTS driver, using a 9-degree GTS3 with a Mitsubishi Diamana BF shaft. (Mitsubishi’s 10th win of the year!)

He also got the first victory with the new 2026 TaylorMade Spider Torched line after switching to a Spider Tour X, L-Neck at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week. The putter swap paid off big time as Poston, who had played multiple putters this season already, gained nearly seven shots on the greens, ranking third in the field this week.

But he also switched golf balls, to the 2026 Pro V1x Left Dash, in Fort Worth, and it may have helped him shoot that absurd Friday 65 in windy conditions, which shot him into the lead.

“It’s supposed to help me a little bit in the wind,” Poston said Friday of the lowering spinning Pro V1x variant. “So we felt like today was going to be a good test of that and it obviously performed really well. We had a couple shots that I felt like didn’t quite hit ’em perfect and it hung in there pretty well.”

Poston first approached Titleist’s Tour team about the switch at the PGA Championship, specifically looking for better performance in the wind. He told the reps his Pro V1x was overspinning on his irons and wedges after he added speed recently.

After testing both Left Dash and the 2025 Pro V1 at home, Poston and Titleist’s J.J. Van Wezenbeeck decided to add Left Dash in Fort Worth, where he finished T35.

Heading into Charles Schwab, Poston was 85th in SG: Approach (+0.024). He picked up 1.4 strokes at Colonial before gaining more than +8 SG: Approach this week and ranking T4 in GIR.

Poston joins Jordan Spieth as recent converts to the new Left Dash.

TaylorMade Fairways have dominated on Tour for over a decade because of their unique performance recipe, which enables maximum distance and versatility.
The Qi4D fairway is designed for golfers who want the most advanced technology while still prioritizing versatility and control with amazing distance.

4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimized flight and is available in all lofts.

REFINED ATTRIBUTES, BIG CHANGES

Engineers conducted an objective analysis of all the performance attributes and discovered new methods to enhance performance and confidence.
Sit points, lie angles, address views, and center of gravity locations were all updated based on Tour feedback and the expertise of leading fitters worldwide, ensuring the optimal fairway across skill levels.

TOUR-PROVEN TECHNOLOGIES

New and improved cut-through Speed Pocket™ protects ball speed and reduces spin on low-face strikes.
Advanced CAD modeling creates a design with a clean and powerful sound, a foundation for TaylorMade fairway performance.
Twist Face™ features corrective face curvature designed to provide straighter shots on mishits.

Friday at the 2026 Memorial Tournament saw carnage up and down the leaderboard. Gusty, ever-changing winds, deep rough and increasingly crispy greens at Muirfield Village sent scores soaring.

The treacherous conditions inspired adjectives like “brutal” and “insane” from the likes of PGA Tour stars Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas (who needed a hug from Rory McIlroy after the round), while World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was left feeling like he was going to shoot “about 90.”

Even Ryan Gerard, who shot 69 and sits in second, said of Muirfield Village, “Mentally and physically this place is a monster.”

Justin Thomas on Memorial carnage: ‘Hardest round of golf I can remember’

While J.T. Poston, somehow, some way, managed to shoot an incredible 65 in Round 2 that gave him a one-shot lead, many stars were just happy to make the cut given the conditions on Friday. Jason Day (76), Jordan Spieth (79) and Rickie Fowler (82) all failed to earn Saturday tee times.

You can count Thomas among those thrilled to survive and play the weekend. After finishing his round, Thomas told reporters that it may have been the “hardest round of golf” he had ever played, even counting major championships.

“I can’t put into words how hard that was. That was the hardest round of golf that I can remember, major, non-major, it was just insane,” an exhausted Thomas said Friday evening in Ohio. “The wind wasn’t really the direction it was supposed to be or kind of forecasted to be for kind of like half the day and that usually isn’t something that happens when it’s at 25, 20, 25 miles an hour. It was just hard. You don’t have a bail out on half your shots out here so you have a lot of shots over water and you’re like, well, I hope it’s helping or I hope it’s not hurting. But everybody’s dealing with the same thing, but, man, it was brutal.”

He added: “I’m sure it sucks for all of us.”

Thomas also shared that while he’s happy he made the cut, he’s also happy he doesn’t have to play next week, because the brutal conditions have zapped his confidence.

“I mean, if I was playing next week, no, this would be absolutely terrible. I would be exhausted, I would be, I probably wouldn’t have a lot of confidence in my game. I probably would not want to do anything the next week. So I’m very happy that I have a week off next week,” Thomas said.

Thomas finished with a three-over 75, leaving him five over and T47 heading into the weekend at the Memorial. McIlroy finds himself T19 after shooting a 74 on Friday.

The two stars played alongside each other on Friday, and the experience was so taxing, they skipped the post-round handshake and instead comforted each other with a hug after putting out on the final green.

“It was a mutual hug,” Thomas said. “We just looked at each other and I think we both, we were like, we need a hug. He probably realized I needed one maybe more. It was a grind. It was a different grind for him, but, yeah, we were just battling out there.”

Scottie Scheffler: ‘I felt like I was going to shoot about 90 today’

If there’s one quote that sums up Friday’s round at this week’s Memorial, it’s this one from Scheffler, the World No. 1 and two-time defending champion.

“I felt like I was going to shoot about 90 today,” Scheffler remarked Friday evening. To be fair, Scheffler was talking more about how poorly he was playing, rather than the difficult playing conditions.

“I don’t know if you were out there on the course, but I was going to be hard to find if you were out watching my group,” Scheffler joked. “I felt like I got my first birdie putt of the day on the 13th hole. I maybe had one on 11, but I couldn’t imagine I hit more than six or seven greens today.”

He did add that the tough test Muirfield Village presents exacerbates bad shots.

“So around this golf course, with heavy rough and deep bunkers, you got to be hitting the ball in the right spots and for a long time today that was definitely not the case for me.”

Of course, it’s all relative. Scheffler toughed out an even-par 72 on Friday that featured three birdies. Only 13 players put together better scores in Round 2.

Scheffler only beat Fleetwood by one shot on Friday, but Fleetwood sounded more like Thomas when describing the conditions.

“Yeah, it was pretty brutal, actually. It was tough,” Fleetwood said on Friday. “If you could sort of process that the wind could do anything, and on top of that, it was very, very firm, the greens were crispy now. It was just tough.”

Fleetwood explained that at times the wind was so tricky, he and playing partner Cameron Young found themselves playing vastly different yardages from the same spots.

“When you’re in a two ball so you can see what the other player does as well and like, the 10th hole today… Cameron’s hitting 8-iron from where he was in the fairway and it carried 160 yards. I hit a wedge and carried it 160 yards in the space of what, a minute? And then 12, Cam hit a great shot, and I heard him say he was playing it 158 and, I mean it didn’t sniff the green. I played it three yards less, and it looked like it was struggling at one stage. It was confusing, but that’s what the wind did, it swirled around a lot. And then you got to pick your poison on where you want to chip from.”

As for Poston’s 65 in the face of brutal winds, Fleetwood said, “That’s phenomenal… how many people broke par this afternoon?”

Just 13 for the entire day, Tommy.

Heading into Saturday’s third round at the Memorial, only 11 players are under par.

Memorial Saturday tee times: What to know

J.T. Poston cruised to the best round of the day on a windy, difficult Friday at Muirfield Village. Poston birdied six holes on the front nine (and made just one bogey) and closed with a nifty sand save for par on 18 to shoot a seven-under 65, the lowest round of the day by four strokes.

“I just knew it was going to play tough,” Poston said. “The goal was to try and be patient and keep hitting the shots like I was hitting yesterday, and it helps to get off to a great start, make a few nice long-ish putts the first couple holes and I feel like I was just kind of off and running.”

Poston is nine under overall, one ahead of Ryan Gerard, who shot 69 on Friday. Sam Burns (six under) is alone in third.

Poston is after his fourth career PGA Tour victory and the first since he won the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open. Gerard has won just once on the PGA Tour, which came at the 2025 Barracuda Championship, an event that uses a Modified Stableford format that was played opposite last year’s Open Championship. He was the runner-up in his first two starts of the season (the Sony Open and American Express) but didn’t finish in the top 10 again until last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge (T10).

Poston and Gerard will make up the final pairing on a Saturday (1:40 p.m. ET), as they both try to stay in the hunt for what would be the biggest win of their careers.

In 13 career appearances at Big Jack’s Memorial Tournament, Rory McIlroy has five top-10 finishes and another four top-20s. It’s a record, on one of the game’s splashiest stages, that most players would embrace, but McIlroy is, of course, not most players. He’s a 30-time PGA Tour winner with six major titles and the career Grand Slam. He has arrived at a place where he’s not looking to win just any tournaments but the right kind of tournaments. Majors. National opens. Events hosted by or affiliated with legends.

“I would say here and Tiger’s event at Riviera, they’re the two that I would love to win,” McIlroy said Wednesday.

Tiger’s event is the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles, where McIlroy has gone winless in 10 attempts. “Here” is this week’s event, the Memorial, at Muirfield Village in Ohio, where McIlroy is 0-for-13. “I always thought it would be cool to win here and take that little walk up the hill off the 18th green and shake Jack’s hand,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy and Nicklaus go back nearly two decades: mentee and mentor, fellow GOATs and South Floridians, occasional lunchmates at the Bear’s Club. During one of those bread-breakings a couple of years back, McIlroy gave Nicklaus a shot-by-shot description of how he planned to attack Augusta National at that year’s Masters. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Nicklaus told him. “I think it’s exactly the way you should play it.” Before this year’s Masters, Nicklaus spotted McIlroy during a range session and offered him more counsel. “I put my hands on his shoulders,” Nicklaus said, “and I said to him, ‘No effing double bogeys.’”

McIlroy did card a couple of doubles, but Nicklaus’s message still was received: Don’t be a dummy out there. Heeding that strategy led McIlroy to his second straight green jacket.

Which brings us back to Muirfield Village. What wisdom has Nicklaus imparted to McIlroy about how to manage Nicklaus’s masterwork?

“He hasn’t asked me,” Nicklaus said Tuesday.

Reporters did, though — specifically, whether Nicklaus had any theories about why McIlroy had not yet triumphed at Muirfield. Nicklaus provided a thoughtful answer.

“I think that this golf course is a golf course that really requires patience,” he said. “I didn’t design it for big hitters, didn’t design it for short hitters, didn’t design it for the middle. I tried to design it so we could take care of everybody and try to give a fair shake to every kind of player. And when you get that, you can’t just stand up and just whack away at it on every hole.”

That grip-it-and-rip-it approach is how a younger Nicklaus used to try and slay his own design (unsuccessfully), and it’s not hard to imagine a younger, bolder McIlroy coming into MVGC with the same mentality. In time, though, McIlroy, like Nicklaus, has learned that driver — at least with the distance he smashes his tee shots — is no good at Muirfield. That’s because the fairways pinch his landing zones.

“It’s frustrated me in a way that I feel like my biggest weapon is in some way neutralized here,” McIlroy said. “And then I have to play the golf course like most of the other guys in the field.”

That is, strategically — identifying the best leaves for the most optimal angles into the greens and then controlling the flight and spin of those approaches.

The greens are no pushover, either, Nicklaus said, particularly for players who like to zip back their irons (see: most modern Tour pros). “Take 3, 6, 9, 10, 14, 15, 17, and 18,” Nicklaus said. “If you spin the ball off of those greens, what happens? Not a good result.”

The alternative? Vary your trajectories, Nicklaus said. That’s what he learned to do, both at Muirfield and another ballpark with which he became synonymous, Augusta National. ”I think Augusta’s a trajectory golf course also,” Nicklaus said.

McIlroy is a traj maestro. Really, he can do just about anything he wants with a golf ball. At Muirfield, it’s just a matter of committing to the shots that the course demands. If McIlroy can follow that formula, a warm handshake from his Bear’s Club pal might be in his very near future.

“I would love to see Rory play well here,” Nicklaus said.

Make no mistake, nobody in pro golf is playing better than those two have over the past month. Griffin won the Zurich Classic at the end of April, top-10’d at the PGA Championship, and won last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler won back-to-back starts in May, taking the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the PGA.

Scheffler opened Sunday eight under and with a one-stroke lead over Griffin. When they reached the turn on Sunday, it was still those two out in front, with Scheffler at nine under and Griffin at seven. The next closest competitors at that point were Nick Taylor at six under and Patrick Cantlay and Sepp Straka, both at five under.

Scottie Scheffler holds the 54-hole lead at the Memorial at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, and he begins Sunday eight under and with a one-shot lead over Ben Griffin, who has won twice this year but would check off the biggest victory of his career if he were to take down Scheffler and win Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial.

Scheffler is the defending champion, although Griffin won the Charles Schwab Challenge a week ago. Scheffler also happened to win the PGA Championship the week before that, so you might struggle to find two golfers playing better than these two right now.

That duo will make up the final pairing on Sunday, teeing off at 2:05 p.m. ET.

“I’ve just got to stay aggressive, continue to execute,” Griffin said. “My game feels really good. Obviously, Scottie Scheffler’s the best player in the world, but No. 1 can be beat. … I want to stack up my game against his. I feel like right now, you know, I beat him last week. Obviously, he’s coming off a major win. But I feel like he obviously can be beaten, and I’ve just got to keep the pedal down and make a lot of birdies because I know he’s going to as well.”

Scheffler and Griffin actually go way back. They played lots of junior golf together.

“I’ve known him for a long time,” Scheffler said. “He always had a lot of talent. He had a very interesting swing growing up, and he’s made some pretty significant changes to his swing over the years and has been one of those guys that always have a lot of talent, and he’s done a really good job of continuing to improve, and the results are speaking for themselves at this point.”

There’s $20 million up for grabs at the Memorial, with $4 million going to the winner and $2.2 million to the runner-up. Below is the complete payout breakdown.

Here’s how to watch it all on Sunday.

How to watch the Memorial on Sunday

Scheffler had made nothing but pars through 13 holes at Muirfield Village on Saturday, but he birdied four of his last five to shoot 68 and steal the third-round lead from Ben Griffin.

Griffin, last week’s winner at the Charles Schwab Challenge, held the 18- and 36-hole leads at the Memorial and shot an even-par 72 on Saturday. He’ll start the final round one stroke behind Scheffler.

Griffin started well on Saturday and made three straight birdies on Nos. 6-8, but that stretch was followed by four straight bogeys. He added birdies on 14 and 15 before a final bogey on 18 dropped him out of the co-lead with Scheffler.

Scheffler and Griffin will make up the final pairing on Sunday, going off at 2:05 p.m. ET. That duo also represents the last two winners on Tour — Griffin at the Charles Schwab and Scheffler at the PGA Championship.

While the Zurich was a team event and didn’t offer World Ranking points, the same can’t be said for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial. It reiterated this run by Griffin is no fluke, and it vaulted him to 24th in the Official World Golf Ranking. His highest previous rank was 48th.

The win at the Zurich was the 29-year-old pro’s first in his 90th start on Tour, and it followed two seasons in which he had eight top 10s in 72 starts. While he wasn’t winning before the Zurich, he wasn’t exactly struggling, either.

When that win finally came, it was the assurance he needed.

“I always said, once I got my first win, it would free me up a ton,” Griffin said Friday at the Memorial. “My mindset’s never changed from before I won to now, but I would say I just feel so much more confident in myself and my ability that I’ve gotten it done. I can weigh back on some of those moments going back to the Schwab, going back to the Zurich with Andrew, where I hit some really quality shots down the stretch and was able to get it done.

“So once you kind of do that a couple times, it frees you up to kind of continue to do it, you know you can, and you keep the pedal down,” he continued. “Beforehand I was playing pretty solid golf, but I would say even for my physical game and body-wise, I just feel like I’m in a really good place to be an elite golfer.”

Griffin opened the Memorial with a 65 on Thursday, making birdie on the last three to grab the first 18-hole lead of his career. On Friday, in tougher conditions, he made one birdie and one bogey for an even-par 72. At seven under, he holds the 36-hole co-lead with Canadian Nick Taylor.

Already this season Griffin has six top 10s in 18 starts and has shot up the FedEx Cup standings, sitting in 5th place. He’s even 13th in the Ryder Cup standings.

On Friday he was asked if this is the most fun he’s had playing golf.

“I don’t think it can get any better,” he said. “Someone said I’m the hottest golfer on the PGA Tour. I mean, I feel like I’m playing right now with a ton of confidence. I’m hitting it kind of more or less where I’m looking with a lot of my clubs. Golf’s cyclical, but it’s fun to be on these highs, and I’m just going to try to stay on the high as long as possible.”

Griffin and Taylor, in the final pairing, get their third round started at 3:10 p.m. ET on Saturday. You can follow along from 2-5:30 p.m. on Golf Channel, with CBS taking over the coverage from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Jordan Spieth took off his golf shoes, removed his socks, rolled up his pants and walked carefully into a troublesome area off the par-5 11th hole during the second round of the Memorial on Friday.

Eventually, as he tried to balance in the muck, he conceded: “I don’t know how deep this water is. I think the water is too deep, Michael,” Spieth said.

Spieth’s decision to drop instead of trying to play the hero shot from the penalty area paid off — he still made par.

“I took the drop because I couldn’t get a stance,” said Spieth, after he signed for a three-under 69 on Friday. “The creek’s too deep so I couldn’t actually stand in the water. Also I could reach the green, which was a big reason why I took a drop. If I took a drop I could still reach the green, and if I were to chip out I was only going to get 20, 30 yards out of it.”

On Friday, the 11th at Muirfield Village was an eventful one for Spieth, who often finds himself in these eventful situations.

He drove it left near the water, but it got caught up on the bank. He thought about playing it but eventually elected to drop and hit 3 from the fairway. He had 268 yards to the hole but hit it right of the green into the spectators and near the cart path and out-of-bounds area.

Luckily his ball landed just short of a tree, so he hit a nifty pitch to 5 feet and drained the putt for par.

“I’m not sure how he did it,” an analyst said on the broadcast, “but he did. He made par.”

“I got really lucky on the lie I had after the third,” Spieth said. “It was sitting really nicely, and if it had gone another yard I couldn’t have hit it high because I would have been under the tree. The lie was good and the greens were a little softer. So all in all it was a really good save, just to not have to make a long putt or anything.”

The par on 11 allowed Spieth to stay even on the day, and he went on a run to close his round, making four birdies in his last six to shoot up the leaderboard. He’s three under through 36 holes and tied for fifth, four back of co-leaders Nick Taylor and Ben Griffin.

You can watch the third round of the Memorial from 2-5:30 p.m. ET on Golf Channel, with CBS taking over the coverage from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Spieth is paired with Tom Hoge and tees off at 2:37 p.m. ET on Saturday.

If golf fans thought the Tour Championship’s staggered-start format was unnecessary and confusing, they weren’t alone.

Just ask the players.

The PGA Tour announced changes to its Tour Championship and FedEx Cup Playoffs finale on Tuesday, and beginning this year they’ll scrap the “Starting Strokes” format and return to a 72-hole stroke-play event, which is the format the tournament used prior to 2019.

“I think when you’re looking at a golf tournament, I think the best way to identify the best player over the course of a tournament is 72-hole stroke play on a really good golf course,” Scottie Scheffler said Wednesday at the Memorial. “I think when you look at a good test of golf and you got to compete over four days, I think that’s the best way to crown the best winner for that week.”

Before 2019, the PGA Tour would sometimes crown two different winners at the conclusion of the tournament, the Tour Championship winner as well as the FedEx Cup champ (although most years the same player won both). But the double-trophy presentation seemed anticlimactic and confusing — Justin Rose won the 2018 FedEx Cup, although that year is remembered for Tiger Woods winning the Tour Championship — which is what led to the Tour’s Starting Strokes format.

That, however, brought its own problems. With the field starting at different scores, the format was still confusing for casual fans and seemed like more of a Band-Aid than a solution.

Collin Morikawa would have won the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title without using Starting Strokes last year. Instead he finished second. He’s not annoyed about that, but he does thing the change is good.

“I think when I’ve started at roughly even par or one under you’re like, man, I just got to ball out,” Morikawa said Wednesday at the Memorial. “Like, I got to go crazy. Hopefully I have four insane days and we’ll see. But now, like every other sport, you have a chance to win essentially your championship. And that’s what you get here.”

Previously, pros were sold the idea that their regular-season success, as well as finishes in the first two or three FedEx Cup Playoff events, helped properly seed them via Starting Strokes in the Tour Championship. Now that angle is changing. The shift seems to be more like a regular season and a playoffs more separate from one another. It’s essentially what you see in other team sports. Both Scheffler and Max Homa, in separate press conferences on Wednesday, brought up the New York Giants beating a then-undefeated New England Patriots team in Super Bowl XLII during the 2007-08 season.

“[The Patriots] had a great year, and they didn’t win the Super Bowl,” Scheffler said. “At the end of the day you have to perform when it matters the most. I think now with the format we have, we have a great format of a 72-hole golf tournament. If I want to win the FedEx Cup, I have to play well at the last week of the season, and it’s just simple as that.”

Homa said the previous format never made a lot of sense to him and approves of the change.

“I really like everyone starting at even,” he said. “It’s still incredibly hard to make it to that final 30. It is the sign of an amazing year. So if you’re there you know you should have a chance at the title, in my opinion. So I like what they have done.

“Again, there’s a million different things you could do, but just starting at zero is easier to digest. It just felt like before if you got to the Tour Championship at even or one under — one year I played great all year and I think I started like six back of Scottie — and it didn’t feel hyper competitive, and it just feels like every year you would end up with two or three people on the weekend that had a chance, and that’s not exciting. So I’m just glad we’re back to golf as we kind of know it, and I think that it will produce a lot more excitement at what should be our most exciting event.”

In addition to the format change, the Tour also announced it will make adjustments to the course setup to encourage more risk/reward moments to increase drama and have winning scores closer to even par.

“I think it being sort of our hardest tournament to qualify for, just being 30 guys and 30 guys after a year-long race, I think it kind of fits to make it not 30-under winning,” Xander Schauffle said. “I think it makes sense to make it difficult. So with that being said, I mean, pin locations, grow the rough, make the fairways smaller. I mean, to start you just make fairways small and grow rough, make greens firm and fast. It’s going to be pretty difficult.”
