After 54 holes at the Memorial, it’s two of the hottest players battling in the final pairing at Muirfield Village. One of them, of course, is World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The other… Ben Griffin?

Make no mistake, nobody in pro golf is playing better than those two have over the past month. Griffin won the Zurich Classic at the end of April, top-10’d at the PGA Championship, and won last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler won back-to-back starts in May, taking the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the PGA.

Scheffler opened Sunday eight under and with a one-stroke lead over Griffin. When they reached the turn on Sunday, it was still those two out in front, with Scheffler at nine under and Griffin at seven. The next closest competitors at that point were Nick Taylor at six under and Patrick Cantlay and Sepp Straka, both at five under.

In the end, it was Scheffler defending his title and taking home a mega first-place check on Sunday night, as this Signature Event boasts a $20 million purse with $4 million going to the winner. Although second-place money isn’t exactly crumbs. Griffin, the runner-up, gets $2.2 million.

Scottie Scheffler holds the 54-hole lead at the Memorial at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, and he begins Sunday eight under and with a one-shot lead over Ben Griffin, who has won twice this year but would check off the biggest victory of his career if he were to take down Scheffler and win Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial.

Scheffler is the defending champion, although Griffin won the Charles Schwab Challenge a week ago. Scheffler also happened to win the PGA Championship the week before that, so you might struggle to find two golfers playing better than these two right now.

That duo will make up the final pairing on Sunday, teeing off at 2:05 p.m. ET.

“I’ve just got to stay aggressive, continue to execute,” Griffin said. “My game feels really good. Obviously, Scottie Scheffler’s the best player in the world, but No. 1 can be beat. … I want to stack up my game against his. I feel like right now, you know, I beat him last week. Obviously, he’s coming off a major win. But I feel like he obviously can be beaten, and I’ve just got to keep the pedal down and make a lot of birdies because I know he’s going to as well.”

Scheffler and Griffin actually go way back. They played lots of junior golf together.

“I’ve known him for a long time,” Scheffler said. “He always had a lot of talent. He had a very interesting swing growing up, and he’s made some pretty significant changes to his swing over the years and has been one of those guys that always have a lot of talent, and he’s done a really good job of continuing to improve, and the results are speaking for themselves at this point.”

There’s $20 million up for grabs at the Memorial, with $4 million going to the winner and $2.2 million to the runner-up. Below is the complete payout breakdown.

Thanks to a flurry of late birdies from World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the 2025 Memorial just got a lot more interesting. Here’s how to watch it all on Sunday.

How to watch the Memorial on Sunday

Scheffler had made nothing but pars through 13 holes at Muirfield Village on Saturday, but he birdied four of his last five to shoot 68 and steal the third-round lead from Ben Griffin.

Griffin, last week’s winner at the Charles Schwab Challenge, held the 18- and 36-hole leads at the Memorial and shot an even-par 72 on Saturday. He’ll start the final round one stroke behind Scheffler.

Griffin started well on Saturday and made three straight birdies on Nos. 6-8, but that stretch was followed by four straight bogeys. He added birdies on 14 and 15 before a final bogey on 18 dropped him out of the co-lead with Scheffler.

Scheffler and Griffin will make up the final pairing on Sunday, going off at 2:05 p.m. ET. That duo also represents the last two winners on Tour — Griffin at the Charles Schwab and Scheffler at the PGA Championship.

If you’re surprised to see Ben Griffin’s name atop the Memorial leaderboard at the halfway point of this big-money, loaded-field Signature Event at Jack Nicklaus’ place, you haven’t been paying attention.

Griffin has been one of the hottest players on the planet the last month.

At the end of April, he teamed with Andrew Novak to win the Zurich Classic and pick up his first career PGA Tour victory. He missed the cut and tied for 46th the next two weeks, but that was followed by a T8 at the PGA Championship — his first-ever major top 10 — and gave way to last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, where Griffin won again.

While the Zurich was a team event and didn’t offer World Ranking points, the same can’t be said for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial. It reiterated this run by Griffin is no fluke, and it vaulted him to 24th in the Official World Golf Ranking. His highest previous rank was 48th.

The win at the Zurich was the 29-year-old pro’s first in his 90th start on Tour, and it followed two seasons in which he had eight top 10s in 72 starts. While he wasn’t winning before the Zurich, he wasn’t exactly struggling, either.

When that win finally came, it was the assurance he needed.

“I always said, once I got my first win, it would free me up a ton,” Griffin said Friday at the Memorial. “My mindset’s never changed from before I won to now, but I would say I just feel so much more confident in myself and my ability that I’ve gotten it done. I can weigh back on some of those moments going back to the Schwab, going back to the Zurich with Andrew, where I hit some really quality shots down the stretch and was able to get it done.

“So once you kind of do that a couple times, it frees you up to kind of continue to do it, you know you can, and you keep the pedal down,” he continued. “Beforehand I was playing pretty solid golf, but I would say even for my physical game and body-wise, I just feel like I’m in a really good place to be an elite golfer.”

Griffin opened the Memorial with a 65 on Thursday, making birdie on the last three to grab the first 18-hole lead of his career. On Friday, in tougher conditions, he made one birdie and one bogey for an even-par 72. At seven under, he holds the 36-hole co-lead with Canadian Nick Taylor.

Already this season Griffin has six top 10s in 18 starts and has shot up the FedEx Cup standings, sitting in 5th place. He’s even 13th in the Ryder Cup standings.

On Friday he was asked if this is the most fun he’s had playing golf.

“I don’t think it can get any better,” he said. “Someone said I’m the hottest golfer on the PGA Tour. I mean, I feel like I’m playing right now with a ton of confidence. I’m hitting it kind of more or less where I’m looking with a lot of my clubs. Golf’s cyclical, but it’s fun to be on these highs, and I’m just going to try to stay on the high as long as possible.”

Griffin and Taylor, in the final pairing, get their third round started at 3:10 p.m. ET on Saturday. You can follow along from 2-5:30 p.m. on Golf Channel, with CBS taking over the coverage from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Jordan Spieth took off his golf shoes, removed his socks, rolled up his pants and walked carefully into a troublesome area off the par-5 11th hole during the second round of the Memorial on Friday.

Eventually, as he tried to balance in the muck, he conceded: “I don’t know how deep this water is. I think the water is too deep, Michael,” Spieth said.

Spieth’s decision to drop instead of trying to play the hero shot from the penalty area paid off — he still made par.

“I took the drop because I couldn’t get a stance,” said Spieth, after he signed for a three-under 69 on Friday. “The creek’s too deep so I couldn’t actually stand in the water. Also I could reach the green, which was a big reason why I took a drop. If I took a drop I could still reach the green, and if I were to chip out I was only going to get 20, 30 yards out of it.”

On Friday, the 11th at Muirfield Village was an eventful one for Spieth, who often finds himself in these eventful situations.

He drove it left near the water, but it got caught up on the bank. He thought about playing it but eventually elected to drop and hit 3 from the fairway. He had 268 yards to the hole but hit it right of the green into the spectators and near the cart path and out-of-bounds area.

Luckily his ball landed just short of a tree, so he hit a nifty pitch to 5 feet and drained the putt for par.

“I’m not sure how he did it,” an analyst said on the broadcast, “but he did. He made par.”

“I got really lucky on the lie I had after the third,” Spieth said. “It was sitting really nicely, and if it had gone another yard I couldn’t have hit it high because I would have been under the tree. The lie was good and the greens were a little softer. So all in all it was a really good save, just to not have to make a long putt or anything.”

The par on 11 allowed Spieth to stay even on the day, and he went on a run to close his round, making four birdies in his last six to shoot up the leaderboard. He’s three under through 36 holes and tied for fifth, four back of co-leaders Nick Taylor and Ben Griffin.

If golf fans thought the Tour Championship’s staggered-start format was unnecessary and confusing, they weren’t alone.

Just ask the players.

The PGA Tour announced changes to its Tour Championship and FedEx Cup Playoffs finale on Tuesday, and beginning this year they’ll scrap the “Starting Strokes” format and return to a 72-hole stroke-play event, which is the format the tournament used prior to 2019.

“I think when you’re looking at a golf tournament, I think the best way to identify the best player over the course of a tournament is 72-hole stroke play on a really good golf course,” Scottie Scheffler said Wednesday at the Memorial. “I think when you look at a good test of golf and you got to compete over four days, I think that’s the best way to crown the best winner for that week.”

Before 2019, the PGA Tour would sometimes crown two different winners at the conclusion of the tournament, the Tour Championship winner as well as the FedEx Cup champ (although most years the same player won both). But the double-trophy presentation seemed anticlimactic and confusing — Justin Rose won the 2018 FedEx Cup, although that year is remembered for Tiger Woods winning the Tour Championship — which is what led to the Tour’s Starting Strokes format.

That, however, brought its own problems. With the field starting at different scores, the format was still confusing for casual fans and seemed like more of a Band-Aid than a solution.

Collin Morikawa would have won the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup title without using Starting Strokes last year. Instead he finished second. He’s not annoyed about that, but he does thing the change is good.

“I think when I’ve started at roughly even par or one under you’re like, man, I just got to ball out,” Morikawa said Wednesday at the Memorial. “Like, I got to go crazy. Hopefully I have four insane days and we’ll see. But now, like every other sport, you have a chance to win essentially your championship. And that’s what you get here.”

Previously, pros were sold the idea that their regular-season success, as well as finishes in the first two or three FedEx Cup Playoff events, helped properly seed them via Starting Strokes in the Tour Championship. Now that angle is changing. The shift seems to be more like a regular season and a playoffs more separate from one another. It’s essentially what you see in other team sports. Both Scheffler and Max Homa, in separate press conferences on Wednesday, brought up the New York Giants beating a then-undefeated New England Patriots team in Super Bowl XLII during the 2007-08 season.

“[The Patriots] had a great year, and they didn’t win the Super Bowl,” Scheffler said. “At the end of the day you have to perform when it matters the most. I think now with the format we have, we have a great format of a 72-hole golf tournament. If I want to win the FedEx Cup, I have to play well at the last week of the season, and it’s just simple as that.”

Homa said the previous format never made a lot of sense to him and approves of the change.

“I really like everyone starting at even,” he said. “It’s still incredibly hard to make it to that final 30. It is the sign of an amazing year. So if you’re there you know you should have a chance at the title, in my opinion. So I like what they have done.

“Again, there’s a million different things you could do, but just starting at zero is easier to digest. It just felt like before if you got to the Tour Championship at even or one under — one year I played great all year and I think I started like six back of Scottie — and it didn’t feel hyper competitive, and it just feels like every year you would end up with two or three people on the weekend that had a chance, and that’s not exciting. So I’m just glad we’re back to golf as we kind of know it, and I think that it will produce a lot more excitement at what should be our most exciting event.”

In addition to the format change, the Tour also announced it will make adjustments to the course setup to encourage more risk/reward moments to increase drama and have winning scores closer to even par.

“I think it being sort of our hardest tournament to qualify for, just being 30 guys and 30 guys after a year-long race, I think it kind of fits to make it not 30-under winning,” Xander Schauffle said. “I think it makes sense to make it difficult. So with that being said, I mean, pin locations, grow the rough, make the fairways smaller. I mean, to start you just make fairways small and grow rough, make greens firm and fast. It’s going to be pretty difficult.”

Rory McIlroy’s ball? It fell left of the water and a red penalty line on Muirfield Village’s 11th hole, then rolled in.

But his penalty drop? 

It came right of the water — and onto the fairway during the Memorial’s first round.

How? Thanks to an “on-this-hole-only” provision, one that previously had been in place universally. 

“It’s a great break for him,” PGA Tour rules official Mark Dusbabek said on Golf Channel’s broadcast. 

The sequence started on McIlroy’s tee shot, which flew left on the 589-yard par-5, hit trees and dropped to the left of a creek and the penalty red line, before trickling in. With wind off the left, the shot was difficult Thursday. In most cases now, as spelled out by Rule 17.1d (3), the drop would be found starting where the ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area.

But McIlroy was able to drop to the right of the water — because Model Local Rule 8B-2 was in play. It’s known as opposite-side relief. 

There are maybe some questions here, with one being: Why was the Model Local Rule in effect? Notably, had it not been, McIlroy would’ve had to drop onto the slope leading to the water, and Dusbabek said on Golf Channel’s broadcast that he would’ve had trouble hitting.

“Usually for the red-penalty areas, there is not opposite-side relief available,” Dusbabek said on the broadcast. “However, we instituted it this week on this hole only because the player is seriously disadvantaged by having to drop over there. You see that steep slope there. Rory would be dropping the ball and would be playing down on a steep angle there and be hard to advance the ball. 

“So we introduced that. It’s a great break for him. He’s still going to take one penalty shot for going in the creek, but it’s still a better option here.”

On the USGA’s website, the Model Local Rule is explained this way:

Putting

“Rule 17.1 gives a player the option to take lateral relief or back-on-the-line relief based on where his or her ball last crossed the edge of a red penalty area. But in some cases (for example, due to the location of the red penalty area right next to a course boundary), those options may leave the player with no reasonable option other than to take stroke-and-distance relief.”

But hadn’t opposite-side relief once been in play across the board? It had. On the broadcast, analyst Frank Nobilo noted that, too. 

So why the change?

On its website, the USGA explained it this way:

“Opposite side relief was a complicated option that many players were not familiar with and that was seldom used.

“The primary purpose behind this relief previously was to give an extra relief option for the unusual cases where neither back-on-the-line relief (Rule 26-1b) nor lateral relief on the side where the ball entered the water hazard (Rule 26-1c(i)) seemed viable and the player’s only realistic option was to take relief under penalty of stroke and distance (Rule 26-1a).

“In practice, opposite side relief was often taken when a player actually had adequate relief under one or both of the other relief options and thus served only to give an unnecessary extra option that at times could seem too advantageous.

“This change also helps avoid any concern that, with the expanded use of red penalty areas, a player might be able to use the opposite side option to drop on the green side of the penalty area, thereby avoiding the challenge of having to play over the penalty area.”

One more question: 

Did McIlroy take advantage? 

Not quite. After his drop, from about 290 yards out, he tried to hook a 3-wood toward the green, but it dropped into the trees on the right. From there, he pitched on and two-putted for a bogey, and he finished with a two-under 70, which was four back of leader Adam Hadwin.

When Rory McIlroy sees his West Palm Beach pal Jack Nicklaus in the wake of a tough week on Tour, McIlroy has learned to brace himself, because he knows what’s likely coming: a double serving of tough love. Rory, what happened on that tee shot at 6? That three-putt at 17 really hurt you. You should have laid up on 4.

That’s just how Jack is. If there’s something on his mind, you’re probably going to hear about it, especially if he cares about you.     

“He’s not afraid to voice his opinion,” McIlroy said Wednesday from Jack’s Ohio tournament, the Memorial, “and obviously having the opinion of someone that has been so successful in our game is a great thing for the people that spend a little bit of time around him.”

Even if those opinions are sometimes hard to hear.

Much of the time McIlroy spends around Nicklaus is at the South Florida hangout to which they both belong, the Bear’s Club, which Jack and his wife Barbara founded in 1999. Rory was 10 years old then, all curls and confidence. He’s done some growing — and winning — in the years since: 23 PGA Tour titles; four major victories; de facto don of the Tour loyalists; investor in several businesses; husband of six years to Erica; father of a two-year-old daughter, Poppy.  

Sometimes the wins have come easily to McIlroy, other times not so much — especially at the tournaments that mean the most. Hard as it to believe, when McIlroy last won a major, Obama still had two years left in the Oval Office.  

Is McIlroy a lesser player than he was in 2014? That’s impossible to say with certainty, although it is safe to say he’s gone through stretches over those nine years when he has at least believed that he’s been as good as his ’14 self.

One of those heaters came in 2019, when McIlroy won twice early in the year and looked primed for a big week at the Open Championship at Portrush, in his native Northern Ireland; McIlroy was amid what he described as the “most consistent period of golf” he’d ever played. But then he quadruple-bogeyed the first hole, opened with a shocking 79 and missed the cut. Earlier this year, McIlroy was enjoying another hot spell. He came into the WM Phoenix Open on a three-wins-in-eight-starts tear and said, “I don’t feel like I’ve ever been as complete of a player as I am right now.” But two months later at the Masters? Another MC.   

And so it has gone with McIlroy. High hopes and expectations on the eve of majors followed by deflating, head-scratching performances.  

Which brings us back to Nicklaus, who on Tuesday was asked about McIlroy’s major struggles. “I don’t know really know what to make of it,” Nicklaus said. “Because he’s very confident. He works very hard at it. He’s a good student of the game. He practices a lot. I don’t know whether his is a constant lack of being able to keep that concentration for the whole thing or not, because sometimes he is the par-par-par-double-8. He does that sometimes. And I said, ‘Why, Rory? Why does that happen?’ And he doesn’t know. Nobody, when you’re doing it, you don’t know. You try to think about why you do it, but you don’t. I mean, he is, as far as talent, he’s as talented a player as there is in the game of golf. Why he hasn’t won in nine years? Kind of a mystery to a lot of people, because he is so good.”

So good in 2014. Still so good today. So, what’s changed? For one, the relentless tug of all McIlroy’s non-golf interests and responsibilities. In that way, Rory might not be all that different from you. Perhaps you’ve agonized over finishing up a quarterly report for your boss, or going to your kid’s Little League game? Or maybe you’ve turned down a promotion, because you knew it would mean less time with your loved ones? Players at McIlroy’s stage of life constantly face these same questions, only instead of reports and spreadsheets, their work duties are gym visits and range sessions.

”It’s something that I’ve really had to juggle for quite a few years,” McIlroy said. “It’s making sure that I spend enough time on my golf and on my career that I feel like I’m ready to play tournaments like this. But then at the same time that I spend enough time with my wife and my daughter so they actually know who I am. I’m not saying that I don’t, but there’s that balance of, you know, it’s time management, it’s just getting your priorities in order.”

Which again brings us back to Nicklaus. During the height of his powers, Nicklaus never experienced a major drought like McIlroy has. But he did hit a fallow period. After winning his seventh major at the 1967 U.S. Open, Nicklaus didn’t win another major until the 1970 Open Championship.

“I was playing all right,” Nicklaus said. “But I would say I was having too much fun. We had three kids by then and fun with my kids. And I practiced a little bit, but I didn’t practice like I probably should have practiced. Golf is the number two thing to me. My family was by far number one. And that was the first thing I wanted to do and be part of. For me to play golf was — golf’s a game. A game that I actually, I got decent at, but it was, you know, it was something though that didn’t dominate my life.”

Decent at, LOL. McIlroy’s feelings about the game are eerily similar. When you hear him and Nicklaus speak on work-life balance, their words are virtually interchangeable.

“Look, I would love to sit here and say that I’m just a golfer and that’s all I focus on, but that’s not reality,” McIlroy said Wednesday. “So it’s just about managing your time the right way so that you can, you can continue to hone your craft and make sure that when you turn up to events — I think that’s when you see players get to the latter stages of their career why they play less. Because I think it just takes a little bit more time to get ready for the events that you play. So, yeah, but that’s life, right. I think that the interests and everything that I’ve got going on in my life right now at 34 are because of the things that I did when I was 23, 25, 27.”

It’s a thorny dilemma to solve: how to simultaneously be player of the year and father/husband of the year? How to at once feed your golfing soul while finding time to absorb life’s other wonders? How to be a world beater while helping to better the world (not to mention the future of your own Tour in the face of a deep-pocketed upstart competitor)?   

Nicklaus fought many of these emotions. Until he didn’t. Of rediscovering his major-winning ways in 1970, he said, “I sort of focused myself to go back to work and try to work a little harder at it.”

McIlroy, Nicklaus says, will do the same.

“Rory is going to wake up one morning and say, ‘Hey, I better get on the stick here and start winning some more majors,’ because he’s certainly going to win some more,” Nicklaus said. “I can’t believe that he’s not. And sometimes we all have to focus, focus on what we have to do and so forth to get there.”

One of McIlroy’s lowest moments in the majors came at the 2011 Masters, when he took a four-shot lead into the fourth round — and shot 80. The golf world seemed to mourn for McIlroy more than he did for himself. A couple of months later, Nicklaus bumped into McIlroy on the range at the Memorial. As Nicklaus recalls it, their conversation went something like this:  

“Rory, what in the world? Did you learn anything from what you did?”

(Ed note: There’s that tough love thing again.)

“I think so, but I’m not sure.”

“Well, I hope you did, because you’re going to need to apply it here in a couple weeks at the U.S. Open.”

At that U.S. Open — at Congressional — McIlroy played like a golfer possessed, steamrolling the field by eight.

“I dropped him a note after,” Nicklaus continued, “because I didn’t see him, and I said, You obviously learned something from Augusta, but more important, did you learn anything from why you won? It’s one thing to learn [from] why you lose, but it’s also important to learn why you won. You put those two things together and if you understand them both firmly, then you’re going to win a lot of golf tournaments. Rory was really good about that, that time in his life.”

And this time in his life?

Questions will linger until McIlroy raises major trophy No. 5. His next chance comes in two weeks at Los Angeles Country Club, site of the 2023 U.S. Open.
