Just when blade putters were seemingly on the verge of extinction, Matt Fitzpatrick is single-handedly fighting the good fight to bring them back to relevance.

Fitzpatrick holed the winning 12-foot putt in his playoff against Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage with his longtime Bettinardi BB1 Flow putter, the same blade he’s used for all four of his PGA Tour wins.

But at the end of last season, Fitzpatrick decided to go with the major trend of professional golf and switch into a new Bettinardi BB48 prototype mid-mallet. He won with that wand at the DP World Tour Championship and used it for his first four starts of the PGA Tour season in 2026.

That prototype featured a double-bend shaft, but the same unique C-groove face milling as his gamer.

But Fitzpatrick lost strokes putting in all four of those events, so he switched back to the blade that won him the 2022 U.S. Open and immediately finished second at the Players Championship before winning the following week at the Valspar.

Since going back to the BB1, Fitzpatrick has gained strokes on the greens in all four events and now has two wins, a runner-up and a T18 at the Masters. The two victories are the only two this season on the PGA Tour with a blade putter and the first two since last year’s 3M Open, when Kurt Kitayama won with a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Tour Prototype.

Fitzpatrick’s putter features the unique C-Groove face and is essentially a replica of the Yes! Golf Tracy II, he used in college, that Bettinardi took 30 prototypes to meet the 2013 U.S. Amateur champ’s exacting eye. It’s crafted from Bettinardi’s unique Double Aged Stainless Steel (DASS), typically used in their Tour putters.

That wasn’t the only positive news for blade fans this week. Justin Thomas, who has become one of the poster boys for the mallet movement among users of Scotty Cameron’s Phantom series, switched from his Phantom 5.5 to his Newport 2 GSS putter midway through the tournament last week.

Thomas was losing more than 6.5 strokes on the greens through the first two rounds (76-75) of his title defense at Harbour Town. He then brought the blade out for the weekend and quietly picked up 1.676 strokes putting, a more than eight-shot improvement as he finished with 70-66.

Turns out, reports of the demise of blade putters on the PGA Tour were greatly exaggerated.

Matt Fitzpatrick had faced American fans cheering against him before: several times at the Ryder Cup (he’s played in four of them) and once in a 2023 playoff versus Jordan Spieth at the RBC Heritage.

This was again the setting on Sunday, at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, S.C., as the 31-year-old Englishman dueled with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

And, just like three years ago, Fitzpatrick had the last laugh against an American fan favorite.

Despite the home crowd cheering heavily for Scheffler — and “USA!” chants on the property — Fitzpatrick beat Scheffler with a birdie on the first playoff hole to win for the second time in the last month. When Fitzpatrick rolled in his birdie putt on the first playoff hole, the par-4 18th, the crowd went eerily quiet.

But Fitzpatrick had little issue with the home crowd cheering against him.

“It didn’t get out of line in terms of no one was shouting on backswings or anything like that, which was great. I’m all for it,” Fitzpatrick said. “They’re supporting Scottie; that’s great. You want golf to have an atmosphere in my opinion. I grew up watching football. I’m paid so much money to be out there in front of those crowds, having them chanting at you every week, it’s great feeling.

“However, there’s no better feeling than coming out on top against that — there isn’t a better feeling. To describe it in my terms, it’s kind of winning away against your biggest rival. Nothing to do with Scottie or the players; it’s the fans that have sort of spurred me on there. It was nice to obviously win, but it never crossed the line. It was just loud. Just loud.”

Fitzpatrick started the day with a three-shot lead over Scheffler, who was the next closest competitor. But after Fitzpatrick made birdies on 1 and 3 he made par on the next 14. Scheffler made a late charge with birdies on 15 and 16, and they stepped to the signature 18th hole with Fitzpatrick leading by one. Both players missed the green with their approach, but Scheffler got up and down while Fitzpatrick could not, forcing the playoff.

Back in the 18th fairway in the playoff, Fitzpatrick stuck a 4-iron to 13 feet away. Scheffler missed the green with his approach, and Fitzpatrick rolled in the birdie to win.

“I pulled it a little bit,” Fitzpatrick said. “We had the commentary booth in the background, that was like our target, so that was probably right half of the green, right edge maybe. But it was such a great number for 4-iron.”

After his second-place finish to Rory McIlroy at the Masters, Scheffler has now been runner-up in back-to-back weeks.

It was just the latest victory in what’s been a strong spring for Fitzpatrick, who has moved up to No. 3 in the world behind only Scheffler and McIlroy. Fitzpatrick was the runner-up at the Players Championship last month, and he followed that with a win at the Valspar. He tied for 18th at the Masters.

Fitzpatrick had the last laugh on the course — stealing the victory away from Scheffler and the American-dominated crowd — but also had the last jab in his winner’s press conference. He was asked if it was strange it became USA vs. Europe even in a non-Ryder Cup year.

“No. Americans are incredibly patriotic, and I think that was amazing,” he said. He added with a wry smile, “I guess the only issue is they just have shorter memories because we won in October.”

This week, we discuss LIV Golf’s chaotic week and uncertain future, Matt Fitzpatrick’s win at RBC Heritage and Rory McIlroy’s career Masters prospects.

Early last week, several news outlets reported uncertainty regarding LIV Golf’s future, indicating the Saudi PIF was on the verge of pulling its funding. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil told his staff via email on Wednesday: “Our season continues exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle. While the media landscape is often filled with speculation, our reality is defined by the work we do on the grass.” But O’Neil was more specific about the situation on Thursday, when he said in a TV interview, “The reality is you’re funded through the season, and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business and a business plan to keep us going.” (The clip was deleted but still circulated online.) On Sunday, Jon Rahm won LIV’s sixth event of the season, in Mexico City. What’s your primary takeaway from what was a wild week for the five-year-old league?

James Colgan, news and features editor (@jamescolgan26): My primary takeaway is simple: The Saudis seem to be getting out of the business of running a golf league, which is a truly momentous takeaway for the entire sport. LIV now enters a period in which it will need to work hard to find a path to survival, and as its CEO, Scott O’Neil, himself said, it seems all options are on the table.

Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): One takeaway is as old as capitalism: that new businesses — even the disruptive variety — are hard to grow no matter how much money you put into them. That said, for Saudi Arabia, getting out of the business of funding a professional golf tour would not have to mean getting out of golf. A new course just opened in Jura. Others are in the works. The ambition is still to grow the country’s presence in the game, but likely now as a host for golf tourism and tour events. Which, in retrospect, seems like it would have been the better path all along.

Josh Schrock, associate news editor (@Schrock_And_Awe): My main takeaway is that if the PIF pulls out, LIV Golf, as we know it, would need to reinvent itself. O’Neil said he would pursue all avenues to get more funding, but it’s hard to see one or several sponsors willing to bankroll the league at a level that would allow for more nine-figure contracts. O’Neil himself said LIV wouldn’t be profitable for five or 10 years without significant changes.

To Schrock’s point, can LIV continue in its current form without PIF’s deep pockets? If so, what would need to change?

Colgan: Definitely not in its current form. The league has spent more than $5 billion of Saudi funding to date, and, as Josh noted, O’Neil has already said that the league is several years away from any hope of profitability. Depending upon who steps up to help LIV with funding, I’d say any change is on the table.

Sens: Nope, the league would not be viable in its current form, and I have a tough time imagining what other form it might take. A limited series of world championship events with big overseas dollar sponsorships? But is there really a market for more big-dollar professional golf than we already have? The LIV experiment has shown that certain markets — Australia and South Africa, for example — are hungry for golf star power, but, on a global level, building and drawing eyeballs to a new league is a steep hill to climb.

Schrock: LIV could try and merge with the DP World Tour or reconstruct how it did a lot of things when the PIF spigot was on. But the contracts and purses would have to go down, and, at that point, how many players are going to want to continue when the financial payoff isn’t what it was when they initially signed on? A lot of moving parts to consider, many of which we still have limited to no information on.

If LIV doesn’t survive past 2026, would you expect the PGA Tour to offer LIV’s top players — Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, etc. — a path back to the Tour by way of a similar agreement that Brooks Koepka accepted?

Sens: For the big LIV names, absolutely. If the Tour wants to be a showcase for the world’s best talent, and it does, it will work out a deal with Rahm and DeChambeau and maybe a small handful of others. The rest, I suspect, will have to play their way back in through other smaller tours.

Colgan: In that theoretical, I’d think the Tour can afford to offer a “Koepka Deal” to Bryson and Rahm … and probably leave the rest of the LIV contingent to serve out their suspensions on the DP World Tour.

Schrock: From a pure cost-benefit analysis, Tour CEO Brian Rolapp would probably love to add Bryson and Rahm back in the fold just as he did with Brooks. But things are not always that easy when you’re dealing with two players who already turned down an opportunity to come back, who might not be as well-liked by the current membership as Brooks, who kept his head down after he left and didn’t take any swipes or recruit other players. The feelings might not be the same toward Bryson, who was a named plaintiff in LIV’s antitrust suit against the PGA Tour and its members, or Rahm, whose departure post-framework agreement rubbed many players the wrong way. Would they immediately add value to the Tour? Yes. But for Rolapp to sell that vision, it’ll be a tricky high-wire act.

Matt Fitzpatrick won the RBC Heritage in a playoff over Scottie Scheffler, who started the day three shots off the lead but caught Fitzpatrick late. Is your Hilton Head takeaway more focused on Fitzpatrick’s second win in the last month, or Scheffler’s second straight runner-up finish?

Colgan: How quickly we forget that Scottie Scheffler remains a U.S. Open victory away from the career grand slam? Kudos to Fitz for another win, and for continuing to reestablish himself as one of the premier players in the sport … but my eyes are already peeking ahead to Shinnecock.

Sens: Like Woods before him, Scheffler has twisted our expectations so wildly out of proportion that a second-place finish somehow gets cast as a failure. Fitzpatrick is on a great run of golf. Scheffler is operating in a different dimension. Whatever “struggles” he went through earlier seem to be behind him. So yeah, as James said, eyes on Shinnecock. But also on Aronimink before that. And frankly, anywhere Scheffler tees it up.

Schrock: The Scheffler “struggles” were blown out of proportion as we tend to do when an elite athlete dips below the level at which we’ve become accustomed to seeing them operate. Scheffler almost erased a 12-shot weekend deficit at the Masters with an ice-cold putter. He’s the best in the world, and I expect him to contend every time he tees it up. To me, this was more about Fitzpatrick. A year ago, he was in a bad spot. His game was “rubbish,” and he was ranked 79th in the world. A year later, he has three worldwide wins and has beaten both Rory and Scottie in separate playoffs. His rise back is impressive, and I think he’s a much better player now than what we thought his ceiling was when he won the 2022 U.S. Open. Expect him to threaten at Aronimink and the Open.

Speaking ahead of the Senior PGA Championship, major champ Padraig Harrington made one bold claim regarding how many more Masters Rory McIlroy could win given his success at Augusta, comfortability there and the fact that the course allows some players to stay competitive into their 50s. “Rory could win 10 [Masters] at this stage, or five of them, anyway.” While 10 seems lofty, what say you? How many Masters titles will Rory end his career with?

Colgan: I think we do this a lot with star players: we see them win a little, and we immediately assume they can win a lot. It’s so, so hard to win a Masters. I believe Rory could get to three, like fellow late-Augusta-bloomer Phil Mickelson, but I’ll probably hold off before adding any more to the list.

Sens: When Tiger won the Masters by a staggering 12 shots, I remember the talk being that he would never lose that tournament again. He got to five. Impressive. But yeah, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Things happen. Life happens. Four green jackets for Rory doesn’t seem entirely outlandish. Maybe five if all the stars align? But 10 is preposterous. Ain’t gonna happen.

Schrock: We quickly forget that Rory went 10 years without winning a major of any kind. Golf is a fickle, weird game. I think he can win a third jacket and maybe, maybe you can talk me into a fourth at the end of his career. But the real question is how many majors does Rory win? I feel like I want to say nine, but again, we like to be prisoners of the moment with these things.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s second win at the RBC Heritage came much like his first, with a clutch approach at Harbour Town’s 18th hole during a playoff.

Fitzpatrick flighted a Ping i210 4-iron into the wind from 196 yards to 13 feet and sank the putt to defeat Scottie Scheffler after bogeying the 72nd in regulation to allow the playoff.

He revealed afterward that it was the only shot he hit all week with the club, and it wasn’t even in the bag on Friday or Saturday.

“But it was such a great number for 4-iron, and it’s the only round all week we’ve had 4-iron in the bag. Sorry, no, maybe the first round, but didn’t even hit a shot with it on the first round,” he said.

Going without a 4-iron was a strategy Fitzpatrick utilized a week ago at the Masters as well, one of several players to drop their longest iron in favor of a 7-wood. He actually carried a 3-wood, 5-wood and 7-wood at Augusta and did so again for the middle rounds at Harbour Town. He added the 4-iron back on Sunday for the expected high winds and it proved valuble.

Fitzpatrick, who has now won twice this season, struck the winning putt with his Bettinardi BB1 Flow prototype putter, the same blade he’s used for all four of his PGA Tour wins. But it’s not the putter he was using at the start of the year.

The 31-year-old’s return to world-class form over the last six months was initially sparked in the fall when he followed the professional golf trend and switched to a Bettinardi BB48 mid-mallet putter. He won with that wand at the DP World Tour Championship and used it for his first four starts of the PGA Tour season in 2026.

But Fitzpatrick lost strokes putting in all four of those events, so he switched back to the blade that won him the 2022 U.S. Open and immediately finished second at the Players Championship before winning the following week at the Valspar.

Another one for the blades

Since switching back to his Bettinardi BB1 Flow Prototype at the Players Championship, Matt Fitzpatrick has gained strokes in all four events he's played after losing strokes on the green in his first four starts of the year. pic.twitter.com/oF9L0z9eyP
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) April 19, 2026

Since going back to the BB1, he has gained strokes on the greens in all four events and now has two wins, a runner-up and a T18 at the Masters. The two victories are the only two this season on the PGA Tour with a blade putter and the first two since last year’s 3M Open.

Fitzpatrick’s putter features a unique C-Groove face and is essentially a replica of the Yes!

The most recent PGA Tour winner also has a 10-year-old set of Ping S55 irons with an old Ping CFS shaft that was a Ping-made stock offering several years ago. His irons are super flat to compensate for his out-to-in swing path and help him start the ball straighter with a pull-draw shot shape.

GT3 offers Titleist’s boldest combination of power and personalization. With a speed-tuned design that allows you to precisely match performance to your most frequent contact location, you can make your biggest drives even bigger while taking total control over flight and shaping.
For players with a relatively consistent impact location, GT3 offers a precisely adjustable CG Track to max out distance and directional control.
Seamless Thermoform Crown
A reimagined ultra-lightweight design, born from a new Proprietary Matrix Polymer. The tunable acoustic properties of this unique composite allow Titleist engineers to realize new material gains while maintaining our signature sound and feel. All wrapped in a clean look that inspires total confidence.
Split Mass Construction
A breakthrough in internal weighting unlocks longer drives and enhanced directional control in GT3. The Adjustable CG Track now sits closer to the face for more dynamic CG control, while additional discretionary mass is pushed to the back of the club to maintain optimal stability through impact.
Advanced Aerodynamics
GT3 features a new raised tail contour that represents a dramatic shift in driver aerodynamics. Previously impossible to execute due to design constraints, this advanced shaping results in a driver that swings faster while still providing optimal CG control.

Matt Fitzpatrick, when asked Saturday afternoon if he believed in momentum, thought about his answer out loud.

“It’s funny, I remember having a conversation with [coach] Phil Kenyon that effectively momentum doesn’t actually exist,” he said. “It’s probably psychological, isn’t it.

“I guess that is momentum, when you’re feeling good with the putter, when you’re feeling good with the driver, with your irons, you make a birdie, you hit it close, the next hole, you’ve got the same number you hit that to, you’re feeling comfortable — that’s the momentum.”

This is too.

A six-under 65 from Fitzpatrick on Thursday at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina. Then a 63 on Friday. Then a 68 on Saturday. All of which followed a runner-up finish five weeks ago at the Players Championship, and a victory a week later at the Valspar Championship.

And all of that preceded another win, behind one of the shots of the year.

Sunday, during the final round of the RBC Heritage, Fitzpatrick kept things going. He rode mighty mo’. He needed every drip of it, though. After eight holes, he led by four. But after 17, he led by one, after Scottie Scheffler birdied the par-5 15th and the par-4 16th. Then they were tied. On the closing hole, Fitzpatrick bogeyed after a poor greenside chip from right of the green, while Scheffler parred after a chip from just about the same location, and a playoff was required.

It lasted one hole. One shot is your highlight.

From the right side of the 18th fairway and 209 yards out, Fitzpatrick hit a 4-iron that just covered the bunker guarding the front of the green and took a few bounces before finishing 13 feet past the hole. After Scheffler couldn’t answer — he hit a woeful 6-iron that dropped a whopping 35 yards short of the green, then pitched to 8 feet — Fitzpatrick dropped the birdie putt, and celebrations started.

“To hit the 4-iron that I hit there,” Fitzpatrick said on CBS, “was out of this world.”

Fitzpatrick, after a final-round 70, and Scheffler, after a 67, finished 18-under for the tournament, which was two shots better than Si Woo Kim. The win for Fitzpatrick is his second at Harbour Town, which he said stands as one of his favorite courses on tour — and had been a family vacation stop when he was younger. It also gives the Englishman something anyone wants heading into the heart of golf’s major season.

More momentum.

The takeaway

Fitzpatrick beat the world No. 1 in a playoff. Enough said.

The leaderboard breakdown

– Sunday’s final round starts with Matt Fitzpatrick holding a three-shot lead. Fitzpatrick is at 17-under, Scottie Scheffler is at 14-under, and Brian Harman, Si Woo Kim and Sepp Straka are at 13-under.

– Fitzpatrick birdies the 419-yard, par-4 1st after hitting his approach shot to 10 feet, and he now leads by four. Fitzpatrick is at 18-under, Scheffler and Kurt Kitayama are at 14-under, and Harman, Kim, Straka, Harman, Rickie Fowler, Harris English, Bud Cauley and Patrick Cantlay are at 13-under.

– Scheffler birdies the 549-yard, par-5 2nd after pitching to 2 feet, and he’s three back of the lead. Fitzpatrick is at 18-under, Scheffler is at 15-under, and Kitayama, Harman and Kim are at 14-under.

– Fitzpatrick birdies the 459-yard, par-4 3rd after rolling in a 17-footer, and he now leads by four. Fitzpatrick is at 19-under, Kim and Scheffler are at 15-under, and Kitayama and Harman are at 14-under.

– Scheffler birdies the 331-yard, par-4 9th after chipping to 5 feet, and he’s three back of the lead. Fitzpatrick is at 19-under, Scheffler is at 16-under, and Kim is at 15-under.

– On the 442-yard, par-4 11th, Fitzpatrick faces trouble after hitting into the left greenside bunker, but he is able to get up and down, and his lead stays at three. Fitzpatrick is at 19-under, and Scheffler and Kim are at 16-under.

– Kim birdies the 577-yard, par-5 15th after dropping a 10-footer, and he’s two back of Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is at 19-under, Kim is at 17-under, and Scheffler is at 16-under.

– Scheffler birdies the 15th after rolling in a 4-footer, and he’s also two back of Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is at 19-under, and Scheffler and Kim are at 17-under.

– Scheffler birdies the 418-yard, par-4 16th, and he’s one back of Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is at 19-under, Scheffler is at 18-under, and Kim is at 17-under.

– On the 458-yard, par-4 18th, Fitzpatrick’s drive finds the edge of the waste area on the left side of the hole, while Scheffler hits the fairway. On the second shots, Fitzpatrick hits just over the green and to the right of it, then Scheffler hits just a touch short of that. From there, Scheffler chips to a foot and makes his par putt, while Fitzpatrick is well short on his chip and he misses a 22-footer for par, sending the two to a playoff. Fitzpatrick finishes the final round with a one-under 70 and Scheffler shoots a 67, and both finish at 18-under, while Kim finishes at 16-under.

– On the first hole of the playoff, back on the 18th, Fitzpatrick’s tee shot finds the left side of the fairway, while Scheffler’s drops in the middle. On the second shots, Fitzpatrick hits one of the better shots you’ll see, dropping a 4-iron to 13 feet, while Scheffler’s 6-iron gets caught in the wind and drops about 35 yards short of the green. From there, Scheffler pitches to 8 feet, then Fitzpatrick rolls in his birdie putt to win.

The final word

“Just a lot of grit, a lot of grit.” — Fitzpatrick on CBS after his victory

Scottie Scheffler is used to being chased at tournaments. Normally, it’s Scheffler out in front while his fellow PGA Tour stars gush about his relentlessness, bounce-back ability, demeanor, club-head control and course management. More often than not, Scottie Scheffler is the hunted, with those behind him admiring how the World No. 1 raced past them.

This week at the RBC Heritage, the script is inverted.

Scheffler started Saturday at Harbour Town seven shots behind 36-hole leader Matt Fitzpatrick but quickly closed the gap when he went out in 5-under 31 to vault into contention. When Fitzpatrick stumbled early in his round, Scheffler suddenly had a share of the lead as he reached the closing stretch of his third round. But then Fitzpatrick, who won the Valspar last month and finished runner-up at the Players, regripped the steering wheel with birdies at No. 9 and 12 to regain the lead. Scheffler closed with birdies at 16 and 18 to shoot a 7-under 64 and get into the house at 14 under.

When Scheffler signed his card, he was on Fitzpatrick’s heels, then the 2022 U.S. Open champion birdied 14 and chipped in for eagle at 15 to extend his lead to three.

As Scheffler waltzed to a win last summer at the Open, Fitzpatrick stood in front of the media and remarked how Scheffler was “in a different class” than everyone else. On Saturday, as Fitzpatrick was polishing off a grindy 3-under 68, Scheffler assumed an unusual role — that of a hunter explaining what makes the leader exceptional.

“Fitzy is a guy that I think — I admire him because he works really hard,” Scheffler said after a sun-splashed day at Hilton Head. “He’s a guy that I see always doing stuff in order to play well. He’s a guy that gets really into his stats. He’s a guy that’s going to check every single box that he can in order to get out here and play well.

“He’s a guy that when you look has always improved over the course of his career and made some changes in order to improve. You look at him when he first came out, he was a lot slower off the tee than he is now. He’s got a lot of speed. He doesn’t use it on every single shot, but he uses it when necessary. Not only is he a hard worker, but I think he’s a really smart player.”

Fitzpatrick increased his club head speed by more than five miles per hour from 2019 to 2022. He now swings it in the 118-122 range, where before he was in the 112 mph area. In 2019, Fitzpatrick ranked 59th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. He rose to 10th during the 2022 season when he won the U.S. Open. His game dipped in 2024, but Fitzpatrick is now back in the top 20 in SG: Off the Tee and ranked No. 7 in the world. Those gains and his current resurgence are the product of an analytical approach that is Fitzpatrick’s foundation.

Viktor Hovland has seen how Fitzpatrick goes about his business and how a unique process has helped him reclaim his spot as one of the world’s best golfers. It might not work for everyone, but Fitzpatrick doesn’t let those outside his bubble impact his approach.

“He works so hard,” Hovland said on Friday. “He’s extremely methodical. I think it’s pretty cool to see other guys, they have their thing. They have their way of trying to get better, and he goes all in on that. He doesn’t really care what other people say; he believes in what he’s doing.

“You look at his career, he just keeps winning tournaments and keeps getting better. If there’s a deficiency in his game, he tackles it and gets better, and I find that very admirable.”

Fitzpatrick will take a three-shot lead over Scheffler into Sunday at his favorite tournament on the PGA Tour schedule, one he won in a playoff over Jordan Spieth in 2023. There was a pro-Spieth crowd that day, and Fitzpatrick expects a similar vibe on Sunday as Scheffler tries to track him down. “As long as they don’t shout in my backswing, then they can do whatever they want,” Fitzpatrick said on Saturday.

He knows that a three-shot lead can evaporate quickly on Sunday against Scheffler, who is omnipresent atop leaderboards. While Fitzpatrick hasn’t lived in contention week in and week out like Scheffler, he has been working on hardening his game in the cauldron.

Last year, he arrived at Harbor Town with his game in disarray. A month later, he was in contention at the PGA. He faded. He contended at the Open, which Scheffler ran away with. Then, he won the DP World Tour Championship, was a putt away from a playoff at the Players and won the Valspar.

“It’s probably different for Scottie and Rory, who are in these positions a lot of the weeks of the year and in contention and in the mix,” Fitzpatrick said of the nerves on a Sunday. “But the more you do it, I wouldn’t say it ever gets any easier, but it might feel a little bit better, more comfortable.”

Matt Fitzpatrick is 18 holes away from his second win of the season and third worldwide win since November. He knows it won’t be easy to hold off Scheffler. But Matt Fitzpatrick is ready for the hard work ahead on Sunday; it’s what got him back to this point.

The 31-year-old Englishman had a disappointing bogey on 18 to finish runner-up at last week’s Players Championship, and he trailed the Valspar Championship’s third-round leader, Sungjae Im, by three shots heading into the final round.

But when Im faded with a final-round 74, Fitzpatrick kept the pedal to the metal, carding a bogey-free round of three-under 68 to claim victory by a single shot over David Lipsky.

Fitzpatrick sealed his win with a birdie on the 18th hole. With the pressure on, Fitzpatrick laced a 303-yard drive down the middle of the fairway, setting up a 116-yard approach, which he hit to 14 feet — then drained the putt.

“By optimizing his move and leaning into the high speed tech of the Titleist GT3, he has climbed the distance charts, currently averaging over 300 yards off the tee,” wrote GOLF’s director of gear Johnny Wunder. “The counter-balanced Mitsubishi Orange shaft is the secret sauce here — it allows him to swing with aggressive intent while maintaining the face-angle control required to thread the needle through the Snake Pit.”

Titleist’s GT3 driver features five possible weight locations (H2, H1, N, T1, T2) that get the CG closer in line to the golfer’s strike location tendencies. The club is designed for players looking to have additional control over their ball and shot shape.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s transformation from a grit-and-grind specialist to a bona fide ball-speed monster reached its logical conclusion this week at the Copperhead Course. Watching the Englishman navigate Innisbrook isn’t just watching a golf tournament; it’s a masterclass in data-driven precision. He doesn’t just play the course; he solves it.

At the Valspar, the “Sheffield Steel” in his bag was on full display. Fitzpatrick dominated the metrics that define the modern power game, finishing the week ranking 5th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and gaining a consistent +3.32 strokes on the field. But the real story was the surgical nature of his approach play. Ranking 2nd in SG: Approach (+5.939), hitting a staggering 72% of his greens in regulation on one of the most penal layouts on the PGA Tour.

Here is the highly specific, slightly eccentric setup that fueled Fitzpatrick’s victory.

Specs: 9 degrees (A1 setting) with Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei AV Raw Orange 65 TX shaft.

There was a time when Fitzpatrick was considered a “short” hitter who relied solely on a world-class short game. That version of Matt is gone. By optimizing his move and leaning into the high speed tech of the Titleist GT3, he has climbed the distance charts, currently averaging over 300 yards off the tee. The counter-balanced Mitsubishi Orange shaft is the secret sauce here—it allows him to swing with aggressive intent while maintaining the face-angle control required to thread the needle through the Snake Pit.

TaylorMade Fairways have dominated on Tour for over a decade because of their unique performance recipe, which enables maximum distance and versatility.
The Qi4D fairway is designed for golfers who want the most advanced technology while still prioritizing versatility and control with amazing distance.

ADJUSTABLE PERFORMANCE

Utilizing a single Trajectory Adjustment System weight (8g x1) provides the golfer a more mass efficient way to adjust flight, spin and swing weight.
4° loft sleeve can be used to adjust loft, lie and face angle for optimized flight and is available in all lofts.

REFINED ATTRIBUTES, BIG CHANGES

Engineers conducted an objective analysis of all the performance attributes and discovered new methods to enhance performance and confidence.
Sit points, lie angles, address views, and center of gravity locations were all updated based on Tour feedback and the expertise of leading fitters worldwide, ensuring the optimal fairway across skill levels.

TOUR-PROVEN TECHNOLOGIES

New and improved cut-through Speed Pocket™ protects ball speed and reduces spin on low-face strikes.
Advanced CAD modeling creates a design with a clean and powerful sound, a foundation for TaylorMade fairway performance.
Twist Face™ features corrective face curvature designed to provide straighter shots on mishits.
Multi-Material Construction allows engineers to maximize performance by increasing discretionary weight.

Specs: PING CFS X shafts.

In an industry obsessed with the “new,” Fitzpatrick is a refreshing anomaly. His choice to stick with the Ping S55 irons—a model that debuted over a decade ago—is the ultimate testament to performance over marketing. Fitz has ventured into other sets over the years but he’s told me that these offer the best combo of forgiveness and responsiveness that hes found, all while maintaining the spin he requires as a lower hitter.

These irons are workaholic blades that offer the specific turf interaction he demands. His steady striking this week and last proves that when you find a set that speaks your language, you don’t trade them in just because the calendar flipped. The Ping CFS shafts (Control, Feel, Stability) are a lighter 105-115G shaft that are proprietary to Ping. IMO it’s an interesting case study on OEM specific shafts, Ping has a tremendous amount of success in this regard, Lee Westwood has also been a “Ping shaft guy” for years using their JZ Stiff for almost three decades.

The bag is rounded out by a specific blend of Vokey SM10 wedges, featuring the “M” grind on his higher lofts for the versatility he’s famous for around the greens. These specialized grinds allow him to manipulate the face on the tight, grainy lies common in Florida.

Putter: Bettinardi BB48 Prototype

Despite a season of statistical fluctuations, his Bettinardi BB48 Prototype caught fire at Innisbrook, where he ranked 1st in the field in scrambling. When a player with Fitzpatrick’s ball-striking starts rolling and short-gaming it, the rest of the field is in for a fight.

Ball: Titleist Pro V1x (2019)

Fitzpatrick continues to trust the 2019 iteration of the Pro V1x. For a player who tracks every data point, this specific model provides the exact spin window and flight height he has built his entire yardage book around.

On Sunday at the 2026 Players Championship, Matt Fitzpatrick suffered the most devastating defeat of his pro golf career. But you wouldn’t know it if you watched Fitzpatrick closely in the immediate aftermath of his stinging loss at TPC Sawgrass.

The 2022 U.S. Open champion made bogey on the 18th hole, the Stadium Course’s watery finisher, to surrender the Players title to Cameron Young, all while being heckled by American fans in a decidedly “partisan” crowd on Sunday.

But instead of curtly shaking Young’s hand and bee-lining for his courtesy car to head home, Fitzpatrick displayed an admirable level of genuine professionalism and respect that should serve him well as he mounts his comeback to the elite echelons of golf.

Fitzpatrick congratulates Young’s family after gutting loss: ‘I love Cam’

Let’s be clear: this loss was huge for Fitzpatrick. Admittedly, it would have stung more if he had not won the 2022 U.S. Open at the Country Club, where he also won the 2013 U.S. Amateur.

But a Players win on Sunday would have unquestionably been the second-biggest victory of his pro career. After years of on-course struggles, it would have also represented his first PGA Tour victory since 2023.

But as soon as Young tapped in his winning putt Sunday night, Fitzpatrick put his own self-pity aside and turned his focus to genuinely congratulating Young and his family.

The first person to greet Young right after his winning putt? It wasn’t his caddie. It was Fitzpatrick. Young had bit of a deer-in-the-headlights look to him in his post-winning moment, until his opponent broke the ice.

Fitzpatrick got Young’s attention and then, with a wide smile splashed across his face, gave Young a big hug and offered his immediate congratulations.

“I love Cam,” Fitzpatrick said in his post-round press conference Sunday at the Players. “He’s such a nice guy. He’s so laid back; it’s so nice. Always knew we were going to have a good day today, just obviously both comfortable around each other, and it was.”

The second win of Cameron Young's career comes at TPC Sawgrass! 🏆🏆 pic.twitter.com/tq6GeBwRcW
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 15, 2026

Now, Fitzpatrick and Young are TGL teammates, both members of the New York Golf Club. But more importantly, they are Ryder Cup opponents, fresh off an especially testy European win last year at Bethpage Black, in Young’s home state of New York.

In light of that, any hostility between the two would be understandable. But Fitzpatrick displayed the opposite Sunday night at the Players Championship.

If hugging Young after his win wasn’t enough evidence of that, what Fitzpatrick did next should be.

While heading off the 18th green to the scorer’s tent to officially sign off on his loss, Fitzpatrick went out of his way to find Young’s family.

He walked over and congratulated Young’s wife, Kelsey, and kids. Then he shook the hand of Young dad’s, PGA professional David Young, before hugging Young’s mom, Barbara Young.

Matt Fitzpatrick congratulates the Young family despite coming up one shot short ❤️ pic.twitter.com/7EPnNRNju0
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 15, 2026

Having experienced an even bigger win himself at Brookline in 2022, Fitzpatrick knew well how much this win meant to Young’s family. If the Youngs weren’t already Matt Fitzpatrick fans, they are now.

Matt Fitzpatrick to Players hecklers: ‘That was literally child’s play’

About that Ryder Cup rivalry. Given that Fitzpatrick played on the victorious 2025 European Ryder Cup team and Young starred on the American team, Sunday’s final holes had a decidedly Ryder Cup feel to them.

As it became clear that playing partners Fitzpatrick and Young would be battling one-on-one for the title over the final few holes, fans started showering Young with “USA” chants that could be heard on the TV broadcast.

Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, was regularly showered with boos from American hecklers outside the ropes.

In a Golf Channel interview following his win, Young revealed that on the final hole, Fitzpatrick even joked with him about the hostile atmosphere.

“It was to the point that Matt looked to me on 18 and said, ‘Cam, do you hate me, too?‘”

But Fitzpatrick wasn’t bothered by it, acknowledging his own press conference that he’d experienced something similar when playing with former American Ryder Cupper Jordan Spieth at the 2023 Players Championship.

He then referred to the heckles he received at TPC Sawgrass as “child’s play” compared to what he and his teammates experienced last September at Bethpage.

“Cam do you hate me too?”

Matt Fitzpatrick had some jokes about the crowd walking down the 18th with Cam Young. pic.twitter.com/tcwswJ7MJq
— GOLF.com (@GOLF_com) March 15, 2026

“Listen, the crowd, that was literally child’s play compared to Bethpage. If they think that that was anything, then they need to reassess. Get yourself up to New York,” Fitzpatrick said. “Listen, that’s how it is. That’s how it is. I would hope it’s the exact same if — well, it probably wouldn’t be because we’re a little bit more polite in Europe, I would say, but I would hope it would be of similar intensity in Europe.”

But there’s another explanation for Fitzpatrick’s positivity following his loss at the Players. Beyond earning him $2.725 million, Fitzpatrick’s runner-up finish is his best on the PGA Tour since 2023.

After years in the swing wilderness, Fitzpatrick, who also won the DP World Tour Championship in November, is rounding into form. He had a top-10 at the WM Phoenix Open last month and hasn’t missed a cut yet this year.

That means both Fitzpatrick and Young, who is on quite a tear himself, are playing their best with the biggest tournament of the year just weeks away: the 2026 Masters at Augusta National.

There was noise.

As they walked toward the 17th green, you could hear it. U-S-A. U-S-A. U-S-A. “It does have a little feeling of a Ryder Cup,” announcer Dan Hicks said on NBC’s broadcast. On the 18th tee, you heard things again, though this time it was a few boos in the direction of Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick, who was all squared with American Cameron Young on the 72nd hole of the Players Championship played at TPC Sawgrass in, yes, U-S-A.

But there, Fitzpatrick laughed.

After all, he said afterward, all of it was just noise. He said he’s used to it — though he did say that you probably wouldn’t hear it back in his home.

But did it influence play?

<figure class="youtube-facade" data-content='
<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">

</div></figure>

Notably, on 17, Fitzpatrick had led by a stroke over Young, then Young made a birdie to Fitzpatrick’s par on the famed island-green par-3. Then, following the boos on 18, Fitzpatrick pushed his tee shot to the right and into pinestraw, and he bogeyed the hole while Young parred, giving the Players crown to Young.

But when asked for his thoughts on the crowd and whether it affected him at the end, Fitzpatrick said he has heard things before — and heard worse things. He named the unruly crowds at last year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York, along with what sounded like his 2023 RBC Heritage victory, which was won in a playoff over American Jordan Spieth.

Below is Fitzpatrick’s complete answer:

“Listen, the crowd, that was literally child’s play compared to Bethpage. If they think that was anything, then they need to reassess. Get yourself up to New York.

“Listen, that’s how it is. That’s how it is. I would hope it’s the exact same if — well, it probably wouldn’t be because we’re a little bit more polite in Europe, I would say, but I would hope it would be of similar intensity in Europe.

“I knew it was coming. I had it with Jordan Spieth in 2023. Yeah, it’s funny to me. I find it hilarious.”

As for the tee shot on 18, Fitzpatrick said he believed he pushed it slightly, but thought it would be good. He’d seen Young just hit a draw with some wind coming from the right and thought his ball would do the same — but “just gone dead straight” and into the rough.

“Once you’re out of position,” Fitzpatrick said, “it’s difficult to make your par.”

Still, the bogey was one of two he made on the day, against six birdies. His circle on 13 gave him the lead, then another one on 15 helped him recover from a bogey on 14. Added all together, Fitzpatrick said he’s encouraged. There has been progress with coach Mark Blackburn.

Soon, he said, he thinks he’ll make his own noise.

“I was saying last night to my psychologist,” Fitzpatrick said, “I feel like I’m very good at getting myself into position between 15 and five. I don’t feel like — I don’t feel like I get in enough positions between five and first. I feel like if I can do that, obviously it’s easier said than done, then I believe I will win more.

“It’s obviously easier said than done, but I back myself down the stretch, and I feel like if I can do that, then it’ll be good things.”
