Have a big match against a buddy who can also take a joke? Then boy do we have a trick for you.

On this week’s episode of Emergency 9, Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz shared an easy prank you can pull off on a buddy if you both happen to be walking the course during a match. Why? Because it will give you an advantage later in the round. And also because it’s pretty funny, and golf is about fun, right?

“The goal here is to make your opponent’s bag as heavy as possible,” Stoltz said, “thus decreasing their physical stamina as the round progresses, thus increasing the amount of their money in your pocket.”

Here’s what you do.

Either grab balls from your shag bag at home or pick up a dozen or two from the range when you get to the course (but make sure to return them!). Then, when you get time, slowly start unloading them into the top of your playing partner’s bag. (You do this because they won’t be able to see them; if you load them in their bag’s pockets they might eventually notice.)

Be warned, though: you can’t put all the balls in at once since the weight difference would be noticeable, but done gradually it can sneak under the radar.

“It’s as simple as that,” Stoltz said. “All it takes is a few compliments (to distract them and drop in the balls), a little slight of hand and all of a sudden your opponent will deteriorate down the stretch, thus resulting in more money in your pocket.

“And if your friends are anything like mine, the last thing they will do is admit to the bag being too heavy.”

There are two types of golfers: those who appreciate a lengthy warm-up session ahead of every round, and those who are still lacing up their golf shoes when they arrive at the first tee with cart tires squealing.

Sometimes, though, golfers from the former group may find themselves unexpectedly delayed, and forced to accelerate their usually leisurely pre-round routine. What do you do when you only have five minutes of prep before your tee time? On this week’s episode of Emergency 9, Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz shared his go-to method.

“First thing you do, pull up, grab two clubs, and two only,” Stoltz said. “We only got five minutes, we can’t be wasting time, OK? Grab your clubs, head towards the range.

“As you get close to the range, then take a hard left — straight towards the bar.”

That’s right. When time is tight, Stoltz recommends forgoing a traditional range warm-up in favor of a libation-hunting instead.

“Let’s face it, there’s nothing you’re gonna be able to do in five minutes hitting balls,” Stoltz explained. “You’re gonna grab a wedge, a driver, you’re gonna chunk some wedges, you’re gonna hit some bad drives, and then your confidence is gonna be shot by the time you get to the first tee.”

According to Stoltz, grabbing a drink is a much more rewarding idea.

“Do something that makes you happy, do something that you’re good at,” Stoltz advised. “That’s grabbing a drink.”

Once Stoltz has a Transfusion in hand, it’s time for step 2.

“Now we’ve got the most important thing down. We got a drink in hand,” he said. “You only have three, four minutes left. Some of these people are trying to have a little cram session. Not necessary. All you need is a little stretchy-poo.”

Remember those two clubs you grabbed? Use them to twist and stretch a bit, and take a few practice swings.

“This is much better than going to the range and hitting terrible shots, because you’re just gonna have low confidence as you head to the tee right now,” Stoltz said. “I feel limber. I feel good. I got a drink in hand. Time to head to the first tee and ask for a breakfast ball.”

On this week’s episode of Emergency 9, Stoltz went into detail on the clubs he’s gaming in 2025.

“I love everything I got in the bag,” he said. Check out his specs below.

WEDGES

Stoltz plays Cobra’s Snakebite wedges.

“I actually have graphite shafts in my wedges,” he said. “I have the Mitsubishi Chemical, 125 TX, Tour X. They’re heavy. It’s been a great shaft for me and as far as the wedges go, I’ve loved these.

“Shout-out to [Cobra’s] Ben Schomin, the greatest club technician in the game, for the grind on the top,” Stoltz continued. “I like to have as little bounce as possible, so he shaved that down for me, and this thing sits really flat no matter how firm the lie is.”

“I’ve loved these things ever since I got them,” he said. “They have the look from the top of a blade with maybe just a little more of a top line, but you get the forgiveness of a game-improvement iron.

“First thing I noticed with these, I missed one on the toe a little bit,” he continued. “I get a few more yards out of it than I was accustomed to.”

Their one of a kind design features the most forgiving blade shape on the market, delivering the forgiveness that aspirational players need, and the sleek looks and soft feel that better players desire.
3D PRINTED STEEL CONSTRUCTION
Each iron is fully 3D printed from 316 stainless steel. 3D printing provides significant advantages over traditional methods of casting and forging, unlocking more design freedom and significant performance improvements.
FORGIVING PLAYERS BLADE SHAPE
3D printing has unlocked new design possibilities, enabling COBRA engineers to create a compact blade shape with the mass properties (high MOI, low CG) of a game improvement iron without sacrificing looks and soft feel that better players demand.
INTERNAL LATTICE STRUCTURE
COBRA took a muscle-back blade shape (similar in size and shape to the KING TOUR iron), and transformed the inside of the blade into a complex internal lattice structure to reduce the weight of the club by 33%. That discretionary weight was repositioned to optimize feel, CG position, and MOI.

Stoltz uses the Cobra King TEC Utility for his 3-iron and 2-iron.

“These things are sick,” Stoltz said. “I don’t play a hybrid. I just have never been great with hybrids. These give me the look of the iron along with the graphite shafts as well.

“I can hit the ball high in the air. They’re extremely forgiving. I no longer dread hitting my long irons anymore since I’ve had these. They’re spectacular, and then I just move out the 2, 3 or 4-iron, depending on the course.”

FAIRWAY WOOD

Stoltz plays Cobra’s DS-Adapt LS 3-wood.

“I got the the low spin, 14.5 degree head,” he said. “I do have it on the H4 setting, which takes about a degree of loft off. Also I have it on the flattest setting as well.

“Love this club. It’s been a game changer for me being able to make this thing flat,” he continued. “So easy to hit cuts, easy off the tee and off the ground. Shaft, Diamana White Board 73 Tour X. This thing’s been money. It knocked a little spin off for me. I’ve loved it ever since I got it.”

Making a putt when you need to is often the mark of a highly skilled player. The ability to come through in clutch moments is what separates the good from the great — and that goes for pros and recreational players alike.

Every golfer desires to be the kind of player who can make high-pressure putts when the need arises, but there’s one problem: they’re very difficult to practice. Simulating a high-pressure environment is nearly impossible to do, and that’s why Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz came up with an innovative solution. In this week’s episode of Emergency 9, Stoltz demonstrated his favorite way to simulate a pressure-packed situation — and then attempt to drain a putt. His secret?

“The problem is, we don’t have these putts very often, so when we get there, it feels different,” Stoltz said. “Putting under pressure when you’re nervous, the heart rate gets up and starts firing, your hands are shaking. How do you emulate that when you’re out there practicing with your boys or it’s on a Saturday and you’re just going through the motions?”

Stoltz’s answer: Get that heart rate fired up with a quick jolt of caffeine and some physical activity.

“It’s an easy two-step process,” Stoltz said. “First, you need an energy drink. This is vital. We gotta get this heart rate going. Chug the energy drink.”

CLASSIC FANG SHAPE
A fang shape is MIM’d from 304 stainless steel and features a triple sightline that frames up the golf ball for enhanced alignment at address.
SOFT PEBAX INSERT
Pebax is a high-performance thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) that offers an exceptional soft and responsive feel. Featuring LA GOLF’s proprietary Descending Loft Technology, utilizes 4 descending lofts (4°,3°,2°,1°) to mitigate delofting and the addition of loft through head delivery during the stroke and provides an optimal launch for unparalleleded end-overend roll performance.
ADJUSTABLE WEIGHTING SYSTEM
Adjustable weighting system gives the player the ability to interchange to a lighter or heavier weight to achieve a personal feel. All putters ship stock with nominal 15g weights and can move +- 5-10g in either direction. Additional weights sold separately. (5g, 10g, 15g, 20, 25g)

After quickly finishing an entire can of Red Bull, Stoltz was ready for step 2.

“Now we’re gonna need to bang out 10 quick push-ups to get the heart rate up even more,” he said.

After completing 10 push-ups, Stoltz felt that his heart rate had elevated to an appropriate level to try putting.

“It’s important to get right in,” he said. “Don’t let the heart rate settle. This is what you feel when you’re standing over that big putt.

One word: don’t!

All kidding aside, even if you actively avoid playing golf on inclement weather days, golf is played in the elements, and eventually, you’ll have to deal with wind of various strengths.

When the wind blows, how can you set yourself up for success? On the latest episode of Emergency 9, Stoltz explains his three keys.

Drew Stoltz’s 3 keys for playing well in the wind

Stoltz says he likes to counteract the wind’s effect by playing an opposite shot shape. So, for example, if the wind is blowing left to right, he’ll try to hit a shot that goes from right to left.

But for players who don’t yet have that level of control over their ballstriking, there are other ways to combat a stiff breeze, which Stoltz details below.

Use more club

“Especially when you’re into [the wind], club up,” Stoltz said. “Even if it’s a one-club wind, it’s OK to take 2 [clubs] more, sometimes even 3 more.

“Some of the best wind players I’ve ever played with, I’ve been blown away at how much club they use when they’re playing into the wind.”

Stand closer to the ball

“I like to crowd the golf ball just a little bit,” Stoltz said. “It allows me to stay on top of that ball, keep the flight down a little bit more.”

Keep your swing compact

“I just try to abbreviate my backswing and my follow through,” he said. “I don’t want a lot of speed coming into the golf ball. The more speed, the more spin when you get it up in the wind. That becomes really hard to control.”

Match play differs from stroke play in an important way: You have the opportunity to set the tone, or react to the play of your opponent. That means your strategy can evolve from shot to shot.

“I’m typically playing a little bit of a safer play in match play,” Stoltz said. “It can depend on what your opponent’s done. If he’s already hit and he’s hit one in there close, of course you need to probably attack the pin and not play conservatively.”

For Stoltz, having confidence in his equipment is key.

“When I am being aggressive, one thing that helps is knowing that I’ve got the best irons in the game,” he said. “The Cobra 3D print helps me get it to right pins, left pins, down low, up top, whatever I need.”

One benefit of hitting a good shot first is that it forces your opponent to try to match you.

“Let them make the mistakes,” Stoltz said. “They will, and you’ll be moving on to the next round.”

To combat these adversities, Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz has a cheeky solution: employ the hand wedge — discreetly, of course! In this week’s episode of Emergency 9, he explains how.

“This one comes with a couple of disclaimers,” he said. “One, this should not be used in tournament competition. Two, this should not be used when gambling for significant amounts of money with your friends. But if you’re out there just playing with your buddies who are idiots like my friends are, this is an easy way to get out of a bad situation.”

Stoltz demonstrated the strategy while standing in a bunker with a deep face, facing a downwind shot to a short-sided pin. But the depth of the bunker provided cover from the rest of his group.

“My friends, who are all over there, they can’t see me,” he said. “So here is an easy way to make it look like you just became a really good bunker player without actually being good.”

The key to faking a perfect bunker shot comes down to things: a realistic thump with a sand splash, and a well-timed throw.

“You gotta create a lot of sand so that your idiot friends over there not paying attention, all they see is the sand,” Stoltz said. “And the second one is the timing of the throw. It needs to come right after the thump so that it appears to be an actual golf shot.”

Check out Stoltz’s full demonstration in the video above.

Struggling off the tee is one of the most frustrating afflictions you can face during a round, and on this week’s episode of Emergency 9, Subpar co-host Drew Stoltz shared one of his go-to remedies to turn a bad driving day around.

“I know we all want to hit beautiful, high, far drives, but sometimes just eliminating one side of the golf course can at least make the rest of your round playable, and I’m gonna show you a tip that I use when I’m struggling to hit it left and right that just simplifies things,” Stoltz said. “It’s not the prettiest in the world, but it gets me in position, keeps me in the fairway, at least gives me a chance to play some good golf.”

Stoltz’s secret to success off the tee has nothing to do with his swing mechanics. Instead, he focuses on getting the ball into a playable position with his tee height.

“On a typical day, if I’m driving it great, my tee height would be somewhere around there,” he said, indicating his ball teed up about two inches off the ground. “It gives me some room. I can hit it up in the air, try to move it out there.

“When I’m driving it bad and I want to eliminate one side of the golf course, which to me is the left side, it’s really simple,” he continued. “All I do is, I just move this tee height down about half of what it was before. So now that ball, it’s still sitting up in the air, but it’s down pretty low, and when you hit a driver, it gets really hard to hit a draw or anything that turns right to left from this tee height.”

With the ball teed lower to the ground, Stoltz feels more free to aim down the left side of the fairway.

“I know it’s gonna be a little lower, maybe not quite as far, maybe not quite as pretty, but it’s gonna be in the fairway and give me a chance going forward,” he said. “So am I giving up a little distance? Yeah, but that ball’s a little lower. It’s not gonna go as far offline. It’s moving left to right every single time, so that gives me the entire fairway to work with.”

So the next time you’re in the midst of a round in which the driver simply isn’t performing, give Stoltz’s advice a try to get yourself back in the fairway — and your round back on track.

Check out a full video of Stoltz’s advice above.

But what does using the technology look like in real life? Stoltz headed to the range to find out.

“Basically, no matter what your ball flight is, when you step up and hit these drivers, there’s a setting on here that can neutralize it and get it as close to straight as possible, or whatever shot shape you like, left to right or right to left,” Stoltz said.

Stoltz stared his optimization process with the A1 setting.

“A1 is like the baseline degrees of loft,” he said. “It’s on a standard setting — that’s exactly where it is right now — and then we’ll be able to move it up a degree in loft, down a degree in loft. We can make it flatter, we can make it more upright, and hopefully find the ball flight that works for us.”

Stoltz’s first swing with the A1 setting resulted in a ball flight that was high and left — not his preferred shot shape. For tests at home, you’ll want to hit a handful of shots to determine which ball flight is the most consistent.

“I’m more of a guy that likes to see the ball go left to right,” Stoltz said. “I also like it down maybe a window or two.”

Once you know your ball flight from the A1 setting, and you have an idea of the ball flight you want to achieve, all you need to do is use the FutureFit33 QR code, which reveals a chart that shows you which letter configuration you need to use in the setting to achieve the ball flight you want.

“It gives you a big diagram,” Stoltz said. “For example, for me, I’m high and to the left. I want the ball to go low and to the right, so I’ll grab the letters that are down on the lower and the right side of the chart, set it up to that, and then give it a go.”

With the new recommended setting of H4, Stoltz’s next shot performed just as he desired.

“As you can see, that ball flight came down,” Stoltz said. “I got a little more of that left to right that I’m looking for as opposed to that high and left before, and it’s that easy.”

Stoltz loved the fact that he could make these changes to his ball flight without tweaking his swing.

“It’s just a couple of clicks of the wrench,” he said.
