Each Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh will run you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

ST SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The final week of the PGA Tour season brings with it plenty of stress as players look to lock up their playing status for 2026, and it’s led to a very interesting week in gear.

But being on the ground at Sea Island Golf Club, home of the RSM Classic, this week also gave us a chance to get to know the newest PGA Tour winner, Adam Schenk, and what he calls his “complicated” relationship with gear. We call it life as a gear nerd.

Schenk won last week with a bag setup that didn’t include a fairway wood, and just three clubs (his wedges) released post-2018, including his original Odyssey Tri-Hot Rossie putter from the early 2000s. He had a split set of irons from two brands — Ping i210 2- through 5-iron and then Mizuno MP-18 SCs 6-PW with an MP-18 MMC 8-iron tucked away in there too.

That’s just what was in the bag in Bermuda. Schenk is known as one of the most notorious gear switchers on the PGA Tour with a solid rotation of sticks, but rarely anything new.

At his press conference at Sea Island on Tuesday, I asked Schenk about his relationship with gear and got one of the most insightful answers I’ve heard this season.

Asked last week's winner, Adam Schenk, about his relationship with gear after he won with only the only clubs in his bag from post-2018 being his wedges.

Got one of the coolest quotes on gear I've heard this year: pic.twitter.com/DNzqjbk93K
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) November 18, 2025

Schenk started off by saying he likes to tinker and likes to set his bag up to prioritize accuracy over length. To do that, he needs more spin, which the older equipment gives him.

“I generally set up my bag to go straight,” he said. “So like my driver, I launch it lower so I need spin. So I have a lot of speed, kind of created in a little inefficient way, but like I have to have enough spin. So like the older equipment, a lot of time goes shorter for me, and it spins more, so that’s why I generally set up my bag that way.”

Spin is also a reason why Schenk says he is one of the last remaining users of the 2017 Titleist Pro V1.

The trope isn’t unheard of. Two years ago, Billy Horschel claimed more pros hit fades these days because they don’t have to worry about them over-spinning with modern equipment. Tiger Woods has often complained that the modern golf ball doesn’t spin as much as it used to and because of that, he isn’t able to shape shots to the same degree as he could early in his career.

It’s something that almost everyone agrees on, and is why you see many pros weakening lofts to get spin back in the bag. If there’s one thing they can do, it’s take spin off, like Schenk did with his 150-yard 4-irons in the heavy breezes in Bermuda last week.

He also said he’ll switch his driver setup depending on not just what the course presents, but also the weather conditions on a given day.

Which driver will Schenk use this week? He's got the G400 from last week and another G430 Max. His caddie said he might use both! Which is common, according to @PingTour rep Kenton Oates. https://t.co/9lUAgnelKu pic.twitter.com/Cdf5qj5Q9s
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) November 18, 2025

“If it’s the John Deere Classic and it’s 95 degrees, I can swing 124 or 125 [mph] pretty easily. If you’re at Pebble Beach teeing off and it’s 52 degrees, good luck,” Schenk explained. “You’re not going to be able to swing that same driver that fast. You’re going to be able to swing 116, 17 maybe. So like that driver setup that you have when it’s 95 degrees is not going to perform the same.

“I’m not going to play the same driver if it’s 52 degrees or if it’s 95. I’m going to have to make some small change or I’m going to have to swing the driver that I would play at John Deere significantly different or I’m going to lose it really, really, far right once or twice.”

As for his plans this week, Schenk’s caddie, Rob Bradley, said he might even use both drivers he has this week — the Ping G400 he won last week with and a G430 Max. One for draws and one for fades. But for Round 1 on the Plantation course, Schenk just went with the G400. It’s possible that it could change throughout the week, according to Tour reps I spoke with. That’s not an unusual occurrence for him, maybe even more than 50 percent of the time.

Nor is playing a split set of irons from two different manufacturers in a model progression that might not even make sense — such as how there is an MP-18 MMC 8-iron tucked into his 6-PW set of MP 18-SCs. Why is the 8-iron a more forgiving model? Schenk’s answer was on-brand.

“I was having problems with my 8-iron not spinning enough so that was the first 8-iron that I found,” he said. “I was looking for the split cavity (SC) 8-iron, I couldn’t find a new one. The one new one I have has a big rock mark in the middle of it. I was like, I don’t know if that really matters but it’s big enough to where it could.”

Schenk probably exhausted all options looking for an MP-18 SC 8-iron replacement. A rep told me he has no problems trying to buy what he’s looking for on eBay or elsewhere if he can’t find it on a truck.

But this 8-iron also carries some sentimental value.

Also noticed a single Mizuno MP-18 MMC 8-iron within his 6-PW set of MP-18 SCs that he used last week (both from 2017 btw).

"I was having problems with my 8-iron not spinning enough so that was the first 8-iron that I found. I was looking for the split cavity (SC) 8-iron, I… pic.twitter.com/W0goclqYPb
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) November 18, 2025

“So I made my first cut ever on the PGA Tour, funny enough, with those Mizuno MP-18 MMCs, multi-material cavity. That’s the 8-iron that I played in Jackson, Mississippi, my first cut ever on Tour and that was my third or fourth event with it in the bag. My other 8-iron was just going way too far, not spinning enough.”

I’m pretty biased, but as a gear reporter, it’s really cool to hear a Tour pro be so passionate about his or her equipment. I think everyone has a relationship like that with their first nice putter or the driver that won them a club championship.

Adam Schenk might have that with every piece of gear he owns and that’s awesome. It’s very clear he thinks about gear way differently than most PGA Tour pros.

TaylorMade Qi4D, Ping G440 K make PGA Tour debuts

The last official PGA Tour event of 2025 featured the debuts of two new 2026 drivers on the U.S. circuit.

TaylorMade’s Qi4D driver made its way into the bags of two of the company’s young, rising star staffers in Karl Vilips and Luke Clanton.

Karl Vilips (First 2 photos) and Luke Clanton (second 2) are both carrying the new @TaylorMadeGolf Qi4D driver this week. Both their caddies Tim Butler (Vilips) and Jason Wiertel told me they were a go for competition this week.

Won't know for sure until tomorrow, but it seem's… pic.twitter.com/2sBjU0a0s3
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) November 19, 2025

Ben Polland, this year’s PGA Professional Championship winner, also had the new driver in the bag. Both Vilips and Polland had 9.0-degree heads while Clanton had an 8.0-degree head.

Conversion for the Qi4D family has been very strong with six players gaming it the first week it was on the conforming list two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, including Tommy Fleetwood (LS) and Rory McIlroy. This week was the first week the new heads were seeded on the U.S. Tour and to get both Clanton and Vilips into it right off the bat is significant.

Vilips gained .737 strokes off the tee in Round 1 on the Seaside course — the only course with ShotLink this week — and heads into the weekend at 10-under after consecutive 66s to start the week. Also on Seaside on Thursday, Clanton gained .972 shots off the tee in an opening-round 67.

Also seeing strong conversion is Ping’s new G440 K driver, which saw three players bag it this week.

Three converts this week for the new @PingTour G440 K:

Taylor Montgomery
Trey Mullinax (Below)
Kevin Streelman

Mullinax shot a 5-under 65 on Seaside yesterday while Streelman posted a 4-under 68 at Plantation and is -1 early today. https://t.co/ITdFWadSn1 pic.twitter.com/I6l0VAjj0i
— Jack Hirsh (@JR_HIRSHey) November 21, 2025

Taylor Montgomery, Trey Mullinax and Kevin Streelman each put the new driver in play, which is presumably the successor to the popular G430 Max 10K used by Ben Griffin to win three times this year.

Mullinax is in the top 30 on the leaderboard after two rounds and picked up .883 SG: Off-the-Tee in Round 1 at Seaside as he fights to retain his playing status for next year.

Scottsdale Tec putters draw lots of intrigue

Ping’s Scottsdale Tec putters made their debut on the PGA Tour this week.

The line features all white mallet models in several hosel configurations, including two in Ping’s Onset low torque setup. The low torque options are the Ally Blue Onset, which has been part of the PLD offerings on Tour, and the Ketsch Onset, which is a new shape to Ping’s Onset offerings.

While Ping unveiled their super soft Scottsdale line in March, it garnered much interest on the PGA Tour, though it did get some action in Europe. The new Scottsdale Tec putters appear to have a new, more responsive insert.

Perhaps no one was busier this week at Sea Island than Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill. Actually, that probably applies to all the Tour reps onsite this week at the RSM Classic, as all of the players in the field likely hadn’t seen any of the Tour trucks for three weeks, since the Bank of Utah Championship.

Trucks weren’t at the last two PGA Tour stops in Bermuda and Mexico as they were outside the U.S., and the logistics were too challenging.

With around 90 to 100 players in this week’s 156-player field who play one or more Vokey wedges in their bags, that’s a lot of work for Dill and the Vokey team to catch up on any service needs from the last couple of weeks.

But then add to it that many players are playing for their jobs this week with the cut off of the FedEx Cup Fall top-100 to retain full status for next year and that many players are looking for fresh gear to break in and practice with over the offseason, Dill and team were slammed.

“It’s pretty nice to have a lot to do and a lot of players to work with,” Dill told GOLF. “It’s just a sign that we’re doing good work.”

Dill said players were mostly focused on fine-tuning the clubs they already had, or getting fresh grooves for the week in their lob wedges, but one trend Dill noticed was some players looking for more bounce in their sand wedges at Sea Island Golf Club.

“Players that are in a .08M-grind or a .10S, those players have the ability to increase bounce,” Dill said. “But we want to make sure that they’re doing it in a specific and calculated way. We’re not just trying to throw more bounce at them for everything. It’s where do we need more bounce? While still maintaining some versatility or some sort of short game component. So you just got to ask questions and find that balance.”

There were also plenty of players looking to order new gear for next year.

Odyssey’s Cody Hale said many players fighting for their status aren’t looking to break in new gear, just have their specs checked and maybe fresh grips here and there. But there are also plenty of guys ordering new stuff for next year.

We’ve moved Zero Torque Forward.
Odyssey’s new line of S2S TRI-HOT putters is a revolution in the “Zero Torque” category. Using multi-material construction, we have been able to move the CG of these putters far enough forward to get the shaft entering the head on the topline eliminating the need for shaft lean and thus eliminating one of the biggest barriers to entry for this style of putter.
Forward CG and Hosel Position
By moving the CG forward we were able to position the hosel spud on the topline, much closer to the face than typical “Zero Torque” putters for a more natural, intuitive and comfortable set up position.
Multi-Material Construction
By strategically using Aluminum, Steel, and over 140 grams of tungsten we have been able to design a “Zero Torque” putter with more than 80% of its weight under the topline and allowing for our forward CG and hosel position.
New FRD Groove
This new Forward Roll Design Groove is deeper and more aggressive. With a 19° slope it works in conjunction with the dual layer design to improve forward roll up and down the face.

“When we were protected from the wind, I could use one hand and hit a lot of nice putts,” Schenk said Saturday after his third-round 67 propelled him into a tie for the 54-hole lead. “Had a couple lip-outs. I don’t think I made any today with one hand, but I would put the left hand just barely on top so it was basically like putting right-handed.”

On Sunday, in conditions better suited for kiteboarding, Schenk was unflappable — punching 130-yard 5-irons below the breeze and shooting an even-par 71 to finish at 12 under for the week, one better than Chandler Phillips.

But back to the one-handed putting. Schenk has long maintained that he’s less naturally gifted than most of his peers so he has to compete by (1) making as many starts as he can, and (2) using his wits. “There’s just a lot of people out here that are just physically better at golf than me, and I have to try and outsmart them, gain any little advantage I can and give up nothing to the field, and that’s the way I have to play golf,” Schenk said in 2023. ”And make putts. If I do that, great. If I make putts, I’m going to have a chance. If I don’t make putts, I just don’t have a chance.”

At Port Royal, where Schenk called the blustery conditions “laughable at times,” he made putts. The Tour did not have ShotLink in place last week, but it did track putts per green in regulation, a category in which Schenk ranked 22nd in the field for the week with a 1.73 average.

Schenk was inspired to try one-handed putting after a conversation he had in July with 67-year-old Mike Hulbert, who won three times on Tour, putting — for stretches, anyway — one-handed.

Hulbert debuted the technique at the 1995 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. “I just wasn’t one-putting enough,” he said at time in explaining the switch which had started in the form a David Leadbetter-taught practice-green drill. Hulbert enjoyed immediate success with the new stroke, saying, “I’m able to get a good sense of rhythm and the ball just flows toward the hole. When I putt with two hands, I have a tendency to get too mechanical.”

Schenk, who said he spoke with Hulbert at the 3M Open, said he was intrigued by Hulbert’s counsel if not fully convinced. “Can you do that in front of people? That’s a big question,” Schenk said of his thought process. “Like, can you do it on Tour? That’s another big question.”

But then came another stroke of inspiration from the most relatable of sources.

“I saw something on Instagram like a day or two later,” Schenk said, “and it’s like the left hand messes up a lot of things in the short game, especially in the putting stroke and as you’re chipping or pitching, the way the club releases, and your left hand’s kind of releasing way out here.”

The solution: remove his left hand from the process.

The result isn’t pretty, nor is one of Schenk’s other go-to putting hacks, holding the shaft down where the grip meets the metal. But all that matters is at least for now the unconventional approach works for him — looks be damned. As Arnold Palmer used to say, swing your swing. And same goes for putting: stroke your stroke.

“I can tell you 10 different ways, theories, techniques I’ve used in my hotel room this week just trying to kind of figure it out,” Schenk said Sunday in the glow of victory. “I think the answer I come up with is there is no answer, it’s just whatever works for you works for you.”

Adam Schenk survived wicked winds at Bermuda’s Port Royal Golf Course all week to win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship for his first PGA Tour victory.

Facing the shortest course on the PGA Tour and wind gusts of over 40 mph on Sunday, Schenk hung on thanks to a unique bag setup with no fairway woods.

Actually, his bag this week displays expert levels of gear nerdom.

Let’s start with his eight-year-old Ping G400 driver. The G400 is one that many Ping pros and non-staffers clung to for years. Schenk is one of the few pros still playing it, but Bernhard Langer is another notable user. He’s used a newer G430 Max at times this season, but the old faithful G400 got the call this week.

That’s another thing. While Schenk isn’t one to try new gear often, he is one of the most notorious gear switchers on the PGA Tour.

Case in point this week is his iron set. At times this year, he’s used a full set of Ping i210s. But this week, he used those in just the 2- to 5-iron and rounded out his set with 6-PW in the Mizuno MP-18 SC. Those irons were released in 2018 and 2017, respectively.

Schenk’s Odyssey Tri-Hot Rossie is also probably the oldest putter to win on the PGA Tour this season, having been released in 2001 and being the first model to use the “Tri-Hot” name. Just three weeks ago, Odyssey added a putter to the group with the S2S Tri-Hot.

When it comes to golf ball, you can probably guess that Schenk is one of the last remaining users of the 2017 Titleist Pro V1. Brian Harman is another notable user of that ball.

In fact, the only pieces of gear in Schenk’s bag that were released this decade are his set of Vokey SM10 wedges.

Keep reading below for more of Schenk’s specs.

For every shot, every lie, every course, there’s a grind fit for your swing. Finding the right grind to match your swing and playing conditions will give you the best turf interaction, contact and shot performance. Master Craftsman Bob Vokey has spent decades crafting, developing and improving his tour proven grinds to fit players of all levels.Anyone can manufacture a wedge, but it takes a master to turn a piece of high-performance technology into an instrument of creative control. Bob’s six tour-proven grinds are designed to offer maximum creativity, versatility and consistency, all meticulously developed through years of working with the best players in the world.
PROGRESSIVE CENTER OF GRAVITY
SM9 features a progressive center of gravity (CG) throughout the lofts, which optimizes ball flight, accuracy and forgiveness. Using tapered top lines and varied hosel lengths, the Vokey R&D team has raised the height of the CG in the higher lofts, which promotes a lower, more controlled flight. The CG is also forward of the face, resulting in increased MOI, exceptional feel and a club face that simply wants to square up at impact.
SPIN MILLED GROOVES
SM9’s patented Spin Milled grooves are meticulously engineered through a new cutting process to maximize spin and durability. The process starts by cutting the face perfectly flat with a high-speed saw. Then every groove is individually cut based on loft and finish; low lofts (46°-54°) are designed with narrower, deeper grooves, while higher lofts (56°-62°) have wider, shallower grooves.Micro-grooves are individually cut in between grooves, which maximize spin on partial shots. A proprietary heat treatment is applied to the impact area which doubles the durability of the groove without impacting feel, making it the most durable groove in golf. The process is only complete when every Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance.

Pro V1 golf balls are the optimal premium performance choice for most players and the most played model in golf.
Why Play Pro V1?
Pro V1 is recommended to players who are looking for mid-trajectory flight, very low long game spin and maximum short game spin, with softer feel.
Comparison to Pro V1x
Due to its unique dimple pattern, Pro V1 has a lower flight than Pro V1x. A softer gradient core produces a softer feel and slightly less spin than Pro V1x.

Not only the stakes, but his wife, eight months pregnant with the couple’s first child, got up at 2 a.m. to fly to Tampa from their home in Indiana to be there for what could be her husband’s first win.

He had to figure out how to get his ball back in play.

Schenk and caddie David Cooke started moving the gallery around to give himself space to work. Then he flipped a club upside down and started taking practice swings.

“I don’t know if he’s got any lefty game,” Analyst Paul Azinger said. “A lot of players are good left-handed swingers of the golf club.”

Added Wood: “If he’s got lefty game and he thinks he can make good contact, he only has to hit it, 60, 70 yards to get it to the fairway.

Then he paused.

“That being said,” Wood finished as he and Azinger chuckled at how easy they were making it sound, this incredibly difficult thing Schenk was contemplating.

Schenk and Cooke started crunching the numbers.

“I’m thinking we take two club-lengths unplayable,” Cooke said.

“Yea, but if I dribble it here,” Schenk said, motioning to the spot just right of his ball where Cooke suggested he drop before pointing back toward the fairway, “what’s the difference between here and here?”

“I just don’t want to leave it behind that tree up there—”

“It’s a risk,” Schenk said so matter-of-factly, cutting his bagman off.

“If you think you can get it into the fairway—” Cooke said before Schenk cut him off again.

“I don’t know.”

“Then we’re going into the wind with a wedge to a back pin on the shelf.”

Cooke was thinking about the possibility that even if Schenk got his ball back in play, leaving it too close to the green could make it too easy to spin his approach off the back tier, where the flag was tucked. Tommy Fleetwood had just done it in the group ahead. Schenk’s playing partner Jordan Spieth would do it in a few moments.

Schenk then walked forward, asking Cooke to point out where he thought they should try to play to before they got out of range of the NBC microphones.

Wood reported the plan appeared to be just trying to advance the ball 15 to 20 yards in front of him. Schenk admitted he probably couldn’t reach the fairway.

“This gives me a chance,” Schenk said as he returned to his ball and tried out a few left-handed practice swings.

Cooke suggested one more time about taking an unplayable, pointing out there may be a shot at the green.

“Honestly, I’d rather take a risk and just try and do it.”

There’s one more piece of context we should discuss before going further here: Schenk was finishing up his 10th event in as many weeks on Tour. He hasn’t taken a week off since the second week of January.

He plans to take time off once his wife gives birth in less than two months. But until then, he’s trying to earn as many points as possible to secure his place in the Playoffs. A win would make it almost a certainty.

“You’re going to just try and get it up there in that rough?” Cooke asked.

“I’m going to try to.”

He went back to the bag for a different club.

This is where having a good caddie pays on the PGA Tour. Cooke could have kept trying to talk Schenk into taking the unplayable, but he realized he wasn’t changing his man’s mind. Now it was time to support the choice, even if he disagreed.

Two more semi-awkward practice swings and he was ready to go. Nobody saw what happened next coming.

Although the hosel was flipped on top of the club head, Schenk was set up on the same line as the gallery just a few feet left of him. A shot any bit left — like one with a name sounding a lot like his own — could be disastrous not only for his chances but for the crowd.

Now probably isn’t the best time to deliver good news to Adam Schenk. But when he’s ready, there’s plenty of it to be had.

“It stinks,” Schenk told reporters as he came off the 18th at Innisbrook’s Copperhead course. He’d been in the lead for most of the week before making bogey at the 72nd hole, a wild adventure that included a hooked tee shot next to a tree, a left-handed second shot and a desperation putt that clanged off the flagstick. The bogey meant he lost by one.

“I hit a really bad drive on the last hole. I toed it,” he said. “Wish [my drive] could have lightly hit somebody and stayed where I had a chance to get to the green, but it did not, and I didn’t deserve it.”

Schenk was making his 10th consecutive start this week; he explained that he’s been trying to pack in as much play as he can before he becomes a father.

“[My wife is] having a little baby boy here in about a month and a half,” he said on Friday. “So trying to make as many points as I can to take as much time off as I can and spend time with him and my wife, which will be very special.”

There’s no better way to earn points and time off than with a win, and Schenk entered Sunday with a one-shot lead and plans to claim his first-ever PGA Tour event. His wife Kourtney — nearly eight months pregnant — got up at 2 a.m. in Indiana and arrived in Tampa before he’d left for the course. Schenk’s round got off to a good start, too, when he made birdie at the par-5 first. He alternated birdies and bogeys to finish the front nine and was one under par for the day as he arrived at the 12th green, where he poured in a 71-footer for birdie. Somebody tossed a beer onto the putting surface. Life was good.

Adam Schenk's wife is a trooper 💪

Despite being 8 months pregnant, Kourtney Schenk is out following her husband during the final round @ValsparChamp pic.twitter.com/e4Uo0MFozR
— Golf on CBS ⛳ (@GolfonCBS) March 19, 2023

Schenk was resilient down the stretch, too. Seven-footer for par at 13. Six-footer for par at 16. And then, after a difficult bunker shot, he canned a 17-footer for par at 17. He was tied for the lead as he reached the 18th — Taylor Moore had caught him at 10 under par — but looked to be feeling good. Then came the tee shot, the punch out, the disappointing approach, the near-miracle putt.

“I want to close one out some day, but how many chances am I going to have, so I’m not leaving this putt short,” Schenk said. “I’m getting it to the hole.”

He did get it to the hole on a near-perfect line, but it ricocheted off the flagstick and continued on some five feet past the hole. Disappointment set in.

“I wanted [my caddie] David and I just to do the best that we could do from what we had. I think we did that today,” he said. “I just unfortunately hit a bad drive on the last hole and that’s just the way it worked out.”

But I promised good news! So let’s get to it.

For one thing, Schenk’s previous best performance was a T3 at the 2021 Shriners. This was guaranteed to eclipse that. But as he putted out on 18 it looked like Schenk wasn’t just losing his chance at a win — he was going to slip to T2, too.

Enter Schenk’s playing partner, Jordan Spieth. For 15 holes it had looked every bit like Spieth might just steal this one from under Schenk’s nose. But that would be far too simple; where Spieth goes, chaos follows. He hit a massive block-slice into the water off 16 and wound up getting up and down from 160 yards just to save bogey. He hit a terrific 4-iron to seven feet at No. 17 and, facing a putt that tie him for the lead, missed it just right. And then came the 18th hole.

Spieth needed birdie to force a playoff with Moore, but his approach shot came up just short and spun back to 48 feet. He made sure to get that putt to the hole and raced it three and a half feet past.

“Having to rip the one on 18 to make sure I got it there put me in a tough spot on the next one,” he said.

That next one? That ticklish three-and-a-half footer? Spieth jammed it past the left edge. He finished out for bogey and T3 alongside Tommy Fleetwood. That left Schenk alone in second place. That means more money. It means more points. And it means the best finish of his PGA Tour career.

Just how big a difference did Spieth’s final miss make?

Solo second paid Schenk $882,900, the biggest check of his career. Had he tied for second with Spieth he would have earned $162,000 less. (If you’re looking for the flip side, Spieth’s slip to T3 actually cost him $243,000, although he still earned $477,900. I supposed it’s worth acknowledging that both these men shouldn’t have trouble affording diapers.)

Perhaps more important than the money Schenk earned are the FedEx Cup points. Solo second earned him 300 points while T2 would have meant just 245. As a result he jumped from No. 72 to No. 31 in the standings. That gets him a long way towards qualifying for the playoffs, which is just 70 players deep this year. It also gets him closer to the all-important top 50, which will be the cutoff for next year’s designated events.

So, yeah. Bogey at No. 18 to lose by one was hardly the finish Schenk wanted. No winner’s exemption. No Masters invite. But a lot closer to securing his future on the PGA Tour.

All with a little help from Jordan Spieth.

When Adam Schenk woke up Monday morning, he packed his clothes, said goodbye to his dog and walked out the door with his wife as he began his journey to the Bermuda Championship. This travel routine is a near-weekly affair for pro golfers, and Schenk is no rookie. At age 30, he has been traversing the globe since he left college in 2015, and a long day of travel is nothing new.

However, on this day, things were a little different. As Schenk made his final walkthrough of the home, he skipped over one crucial part of the packing process — loading up his clubs in the car.

“We packed our car at 5 a.m. or so and we went inside to say goodbye to our dog, Bunker,” Schenk said. “[I] walked right past the clubs that were packed in the garage. Showed up at the airport and opened the trunk and they weren’t there. My wife and I looked at each other and like, well, I guess we’ve got to go back.”

Pro golfers might be travel pros, but even they have the occasional snafu. This one just happened to involve forgetting the most important tool for a golfer: the clubs.

To make matters worse, Schenk’s destination isn’t exactly the most easily accessible location on the PGA Tour schedule. Each day only sees a few flights come and go from the tiny island, and Schenk (obviously) missed his.

“We were looking for flights, which was a nightmare,” Schenk said. “Obviously it’s tough to get here, not many flights in and out, but found a Jet Blue flight that got me here Wednesday and then one opened up, a direct flight from Boston on Tuesday, so we ended up booking that one.”

Fortunately for Schenk, his string of bad luck ended there. After a delayed arrival, he opened the tournament in bogey-free fashion, posting 63 on Thursday. He followed it with a 66 in Round 2 that has him near the top of the leaderboard.

Nice round for a guy that missed his flight on Monday morning because he forgot his golf clubs at home when we left for the airport.
— Kourtney Schenk (@Kourtney_Schenk) October 27, 2022

“Nobody’s ever done that before,” Schenk said of the forgotten-clubs affair. “I mean, it was bad. I guess maybe it happens to everybody, I don’t think so, but it happened to me.”

We can’t say for certain that nobody’s ever forgotten their clubs at home on the way to a golf tournament, but we imagine they didn’t follow it up with rounds of 63 and 66.
