Cameron Davis’ putt needed a wing and a prayer.
It got a wing.
Davis hit the 29-foot birdie putt on the par-4 16th hole at TPC Twin Cities. As the ball chased the hole during Friday’s second round of the 3M Open, a yellow butterfly chased the ball.
For one second and the first 14.5 feet, the ball went alone. For three seconds, the butterfly went along.
“How about that?” analyst Nick Faldo said during the Golf Channel broadcast.
Davis’ putt flew 2.5 feet past the hole. No birdie. The butterfly then flew away. No more bug. Davis laughed as he walked toward his ball.
“That butterfly must have had so much fun with that,” Faldo said. “He was thinking, ‘Wheeee!’ What noise do butterflies make? Look at him, here he comes. He says, ‘What on earth – can I eat it? Oh, it’s a great big marshmallow.
“Oh, I’m mesmerized. Oh.”
