Tiger Woods has announced he will tee it up in the Northern Trust at TPC Boston next week for the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Woods made the announcement via his Twitter account earlier this morning.
This will be the third year in a row Woods tees it up in the event, although last season his time was cut short as he withdrew after the opening round. Woods has played in the Northern Trust 10 previous times in his career, and his best finish is T2 on two separate occasions.
The start will be just Woods’ sixth on the season, and only his third since the PGA Tour’s restart. His results have been mixed since the return to golf as he finished T40 at the Memorial in July and T37 at the PGA Championship last week. He also owns a win earlier this season from last October at the Zozo Championship.
At 47th in the FedEx Cup standings, Woods is in good shape to qualify for the following week’s BMW Championship, which is limited to the top 70 players on the points list. However, if he hopes to qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship, he has his work cut out for him to crack the top 30.
If Woods does qualify for the Tour Championship, it would mean he has the potential to play in four events in five weeks — a rarity for the strictly regimented schedule that he keeps.
“Well, that’s potentially what could happen, and we’ve been training for that,” he said after the PGA Championship. “Trying to get my strength and endurance up to make sure that I can handle that type of workload. We knew once I started playing again when I committed to Memorial that this was going to be a heavy workload, and my training sessions, we’ve been pushing it pretty hard, making sure that I kept my strength and endurance up.”
