The Match: Champions for Charity was a roaring success just about any way you measure it, and just about anyone you ask will agree. Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning provided some much-needed relief for sports fans desperate for some live action.
Having the two greatest and most recognizable NFL quarterbacks of the past 20 years compete with and against the two greatest golfers from the same era turned out to be must-watch programming. And while Tiger and Phil flashed the best game on the course at Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., it was the other two participants who really ratcheted up interest in the event and the chatter on the internet about it.
From the get-go, the trash talk between the four participants, as well as TV analyst Charles Barkley and Tour-pro-turned-on-course-reporter Justin Thomas, was firing on all cylinders, helped in large part by the ability for the players to hear and interact with the broadcasters via ear pieces throughout the match.
And the golf fans watching at home responded, even some who also play on the PGA Tour. Several Tour pros reacted to the match on Twitter, and they were joined by stars from other major sports leagues. And, of course, Tiger and Brady shared their own thoughts after the action was complete.
