The first two rounds of the 2020 Wyndham Championship featured a barrage of birdies, but the PGA Tour’s best dialed in the pins even more in Saturday’s third round.
Here’s everything you missed from Saturday’s action at Sedgefield Country Club.
Si Woo Kim stands alone on top
Si Woo Kim started the third round in a four-way tie for the lead, and for much of the day it seemed like there was sure to be another crowded leaderboard by round’s end. The leaderboard is still very much crowded (more on that below), but Kim ran off three birdies over his final four holes to take a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final round.
Kim played well across the entire course on Saturday, surrendering only one bogey, but it was on the par-3s where he really shined. Kim aced the par-3 3rd hole, and then nearly jarred another one at the par-3 12th.
Crowded leaderboard sets up epic Sunday
If anyone tells you they know who will take home the Wyndham trophy at the end of Sunday’s final round, don’t believe them. While Kim seems unstoppable at the moment, there are six players within four shots of his lead, and 17 players within seven.
Those may seem like large deficits to overcome, but that’s not the case this week. Saturday’s round featured two 61s (by Zach Johnson and Jim Herman), two 62s (by Kim and Rob Oppenheim) and three 63s. With that many birdies flying, anything can happen over the final 18 holes.
Jordan Spieth’s charge comes to a halt
Jordan Spieth showed some positive signs that his game was turning the corner in the second round on Friday. He shot a three-under 67 to claw up the leaderboard and make the cut right on the number. After 36 holes, he was only seven shots back, with the possibility of going low on the weekend and capturing a come-from-behind win,
But all of that momentum came to a quick stop on Saturday. Spieth made three bogeys and finished with an even-par 70. He’s now 15 shots off the lead.
