The golf has not always been good at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, but the money? Now that’s great.
After three blustery days of play in Tulsa, golfers are preparing for the grand conclusion of golf’s second major championship of the year … and for the record payday that will come along with it.
On Sunday at the 2022 PGA Championship, the PGA of America will hand out the largest purse in tournament history, a massive lump sum of $15 million that represents a $3 million jump over last year’s overall payday.
The significant bump will help to bring the tournament more in line with the rest of golf’s highest-paying events, which have begun reaching into the $20 million range in recent years. At $15 million, the PGA Championship purse mirrors the prize money given to players at the Masters, which also saw a jump in 2022, and brings the PGA above the payouts offered at most PGA Tour events.
As for the players with a chance of taking home the $2.7 million winner’s sum from Tulsa tomorrow? Mito Pereira, Will Zalatoris, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young are the frontline contenders, while names like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson lurk further back. (Either way, that’s a hell of a lot of $18 Michelob Ultras.)
Below, find everything you need to know about the PGA Championship’s $15 million purse; you can catch the action from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. ET on ESPN and from 1 p.m. ET until the completion of play on CBS.
