Joel Dahmen, in his wonderful Joel Dahmen manner, summed up golf improvement in one sentence. Dahmen’s humor, you may remember, is as dry as his swing is smooth.
“Yeah, it’s amazing what happens,” he said Friday, “when you work with your golf coach at home and you hit a couple balls.”
Indeed. A week ago, Dahmen did. And wouldn’t you know it: Through 36 holes at the Sanderson Farms Championship, he’s contending.
On Friday, Dahmen bogeyed the 10th hole at the Country Club of Jackson, his first hole after starting on the back nine. Then he birdied 14. And 15. And 17. And 1. And 2. And 6. In the end, Dahmen finished with a five-under 67, and after a first-round 69, he’s at eight-under overall, six shots behind leader Ben Griffin.
But the past few months had been a grind for one of the stars of Netflix’s Full Swing. Since the Memorial in June, he had played nine events, and he missed the cut in seven of them. Dahmen was searching. He reached out to his swing coach, Rob Rashell.
“I had a great lesson with him last week and played really well at home with some buddies on a Thursday, and I was like, I think this is kind of clicking, coming together,” Dahmen said after his second round. “You never know until you bring it out here, but it’s working. Maybe there is something to hitting golf balls and practicing a little bit.
“We’ll just keep going down that route.”
