Brutal Bermuda winds took over the first round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course on Thursday, and the scores, as expected, took a hit. Here’s a quick rundown of what happened Thursday and what you need to know for Friday.

Previewing the Butterfield Bermuda Championship Round 2

Instead of explaining just how windy it was in Bermuda on Thursday, we’ll let amateur Damian Palanyandi provide an example.

“It was crazy,” he said. “On 13, one of the guys hit 3-wood and he was still 20 yards short. It was like 200 yards, 180 downwind, downhill, so just shows how much wind there was.”

Palanyandi shot five-over 76 in his first career PGA Tour start, but he wasn’t the only one who had trouble with the wind, which was steady at about 20 mph and gusted up to 35 mph. Several players shot 80. Nick Watney said he took his hat off close to 10 times so it wouldn’t blow away, although one time he was caught off guard and it, in fact, did blow away. He shot a one-under 70.

“Tough day and I’m happy to be done; I’ll say that,” Watney said.

All of this makes the six-under 65s by Brandon Hagy and Chad Ramey even more impressive. They share the lead. Semi-good news for golfers, though: Friday’s weather will be better, but barely. The forecast calls for winds of 10-15 mph with gusts up to 20 mph. Rain and wind are then both expected on the weekend. This week’s winner will earn that trophy.
