Use a sharpie to hit pitch shots that will make you smile

August 21, 2019

Believe it or not, the only thing standing between you and perfect, high-lofted pitches is a dry erase marker.

That sounds a little crazy, but when you put the marker to use in the following drill, you’ll see that it’s true.

  1. Draw a smiley face on the clubface with the marker so that its eyes are parallel with the toe and its smile is nearer the heel.
  2. Get into your setup, start the club back and stop when you reach the end of your backswing. Rotate your head and look at the clubface. For a high-lofted pitch, it should be open with the toe pointing to the sky. You know you’ve got it right if the smiley face you’ve just drawn is smiling right back at you!
  3. Return to setup. Make a new swing, this time all the way to your pitch-shot finish. Your wrists will want to roll over through impact.

Make sure they don’t. Remember, you’re trying to hit a high-lofted shot, so you need to practice holding the clubface open. The good news? You’ll know you did when you see the smiley face beaming back at you in your finish position, too!
