HEAD-TO-HEAD TEST: Ping’s new G425 drivers vs. previous models

Ping has officially launched its G425 drivers and family to the public today after months of stacking up wins on multiple professional tours. The G425 drivers found immediate success as Tyrrell Hatton and Viktor Hovland each captured wins using G425 LST drivers in late 2020.

With so much hype around the new G425 products coming into 2021, we had to put them to the test. Recently, True Spec Golf’s DJ Lantz and GOLF.com’s senior equipment editor Andrew Tursky (that’s me) hit the range at Phoenix Country Club in Arizona with a True Spec Golf mobile fitting unit and a launch monitor to conduct head-to-head testing.

Lantz, a scratch golfer, hit the new G425 Max driver against Ping’s previous G400 Max driver. The new G425 Max driver combines technologies of Ping’s previously released G400 Max and G410 Plus drivers. Thanks to a heavier moveable weight and overall bigger size, Ping reports that its G425 Max driver now has the highest MOI (moment of inertia) of any driver in the company’s history.

For me, as a 2-handicapper who struggles with a hook at times, I hit Ping’s new G425 LST (Low Spin Technology) against the previously released G410 LST driver. As compared to the G425 Max offering, the G425 LST is built for higher speed golfers with its compact 445cc shape and low-spin weight structure. Click here to read more about both of Ping’s new G425 driver options and the new technologies.

For the test, we each hit 3 balls with our respective drivers, and the only variable we changed was the head models. How did the new heads stack up against the old versions? You’ll have to watch the video at the top of the story to find out.
