For the fifth time in the last eight years, golf’s national championship will be played on a course you, your brother, your sister, your buddies, your boss — you get the picture — can play. And what’s not to love about that?

The 121st U.S. Open Championship began on Thursday at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., and will be played exclusively on Torrey Pines’ South Course. Torrey Pines is a municipal facility and has two courses, the North and the South. The North is also used in the PGA Tour’s annual Farmers Insurance Open, but for the U.S. Open players stick to just the South.

Both of Torrey Pines’ courses appeared in GOLF’s inaugural 30 best municipal golf courses in America ranking, which was in the June 2021 issue of GOLF Magazine and published on GOLF.com this month.

Torrey Pines South was ranked as the 5th-best muni in America, and Torrey Pines North was ranked 18th. But what’s great about municipal golf courses, remember, is their price. While a select few still call for a couple hundred bucks, almost all of them are steals for locals.

Torrey Pines South costs $202–$252 for nonresidents, but is $63–$78 for San Diego residents. The North is around the same price, but slightly cheaper. It’s $128-$160 for nonresidents and $44-$58 for locals.
