The World’s First ‘Edible’ Course Opens in the Caribbean

Feast your eyes on this cool new layout in the Caribbean, and while you’re looking, feel free to nibble on it, too.

Hailed as the world’s first “edible” golf course, Irie Fields on St. Kitts Island is a par-71, 18-hole track whose fairways blend into organic farmland, its grounds a mosaic of native grasses and pesticide-free seasonal crops.

Miss a drive here and you might find the roughage or wind up in the fruit trees, giving new meaning to the term “banana ball.”

Designed by former Masters champion Ian Woosnam, Irie Fields is located at Kittitian Hill, a luxury development that proclaims its commitment to sustainability.

Certified by the Golf Environment Organization, which recognizes sustainable golf projects around the world, the course is maintained with the help of a herd of goats and relies on recycled water for irrigation.

The 200-some acres where the course sits were once devoted to sugarcane but has since given way to a rainbow of local crops: guavas, mangos, pineapple, passion fruit. Golfers are encouraged to graze as they go about their rounds, guided by caddies who will check for ripeness as readily as they check for wind.

So no matter how you play, you can tell your buddies that you really ate that course up, rather than the other way around.
