Phil Mickelson, Stephen Curry, Charles Barkley and Peyton Manning face off on Friday at The Stone Canyon Club for Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Change.
But if you haven’t heard of The Stone Canyon Club, we’re here to fill you in. The club is in Oro Valley, Ariz., about 20 miles north of downtown Tucson and a two-hour drive from Phoenix. The Jay Morrish design opened in 2000 as a part of a private residential golf community.
“The same features that make the site so dramatic — the boulders, the saguaros, the elevation shifts — are also a massive impediment to good golf,” said Brian Curley, a GOLF Magazine Top 100 course rater who toured the site before the course was built. “When you take that all into account, as an architectural achievement, it’s pretty resounding.”
